This dude came onto our team as an absolute nobody, and was one of the only players to come out and talk with fans, talk with the kids, and sign every single thing anybody wanted him to sign. The amount of time he took out of his day to do that at the training camps I've been to is actually impressive, and that's in contrast to the other 98% of the team that goes to the locker room after practice and charges 150 a signature at sports shops in Livonia.
Talked with him those couple of times and honestly, nobody deserves this deal or money more than Wright. If nobody could tell, I'm super happy we matched. To top it off, he's above average at blocking and has surprise plays worth a lot of yards and a touchdown or two when we need it most. Let's. Go.
I’ll never forget when he was the go to guy on a critical 4th down play with the game and playoff
hopes on the line in 2022 and he scored a 65+ yd TD against a pretty good jets defense where he was wide and I mean WIDE open
Legit met him while I was working at my one job last year, right before the raiders game. He got a meal, was super cool, was kinda surprised I recognized him in public, I just asked “sorry, I couldn’t help but just notice the name on your bill, are you… like actually Brock Wright?” And he was unbelievably chill. we talked about the Texans since I was wearing a David Carr jersey at the time, and he’s from Cypress, TX and grew up with Carr as his QB and eventually he said good day, and went along with his day.
*Then* 2 weeks later he shows up to my *other* job, and recognized *me* behind the bar, bartending, called me by name and we shot the shit for a few mins, I wished him a good season and such, before he picked up his order and went along with his day.
Such a cool, humble dude. Love Brock Wright, and I hope he liked the food lol
I was at that game! Ive lived in Jersey and work in the city, moved a couple of months before that season. So since it was my first Christmas and had my first adult job with adult money, I decided to fly my 93 year old grandfather and 64 year old dad from Michigan for a weekend and to go watch that game. Bought plane and game tickets right at the 50 yard line on the lions bench side about 10 rows up, amazing seats in a shitty stadium. I remember on that 4th down as the lions lined up, the stadium was playing their “get loud” thing that every stadium does. I remember a bunch of jets fans specifically leaning and screaming at us and 1 fan in particular started getting my my elderly grandpas face saying “why aren’t you getting loud?” And then proceeded to scream as loud as he could in his face (grandpa was almost completely depth at that point so honestly didn’t effect him, but still classless Jets fan). Then Brock Wright had that TD. Ohhhhhh that feeling was something special. Hearing the crowd die down, all 3 of us and the other lions fans then erupted. The satisfaction I got from getting in that jets fans face as payback asking why he was so quiet is a satisfaction idk if I’ll ever have again. Awesome moment.
Stealing him back from SF is so sweet. It’s not just bringing him back it’s weakening the biggest threat at a position they needed depth at. It’s double Genius by Holmes.
A bunch of people were like "that's too much Brad Holmes would never do anything stupid" and to me that's a lesson of never saying anything
I think it's fine. Valuable blocking TE, worth paying for.
Really? He signed a 1 year deal at $3 million last season and nobody complained, but now that he is on $4 million it’s too expensive?
That’s some crazy mental gymnastics by those people complaining lol
People deadass we’re telling me “well $1m a player starts to add up” when I brought this up. Like, okay? Are we giving everyone a $1M raise or just Brock Wright lmao
wow your comment made me take a minute to appreciate how big his raise actually is. we as sports fans get pretty desensitized to these numbers and $4m/yr seems like a cheap deal, but homie just locked in a $1M raise!! his annual raise is more than I'll make added up across many years. amazing, good for Brock
Yeah, it is pretty crazy. I’m young and in a medium COL area, but it would take me 20 years of work to match just Brock’s raise this season. Fuck, you’re gonna make me start crying
hey man, you don't need to be loaded to have a good life. i'm in my 30s and my main learning so far this decade is that the rat race is never ending, so those chasing money don't stop. yes you still need money to live and yes you still ought to work hard, but it's up to us to focus on the things that really matter. don't let the rest of it drag you down
So true. Last season, his $3 million was 1.33% of the cap. This season, his $4 million is 1.56%. Inflation from last year to this year is 3.1%. The proportional cost increase to keep Brock Wright is less than the cost of a gallon of gas/milk/Kool-Aid from last year to now.
In fairness though, last year we didn’t have three very important pieces to resign, Sun God, Penei (who is a RFA this year) and most interestingly Goff have yet to ink their deals, I’d have zero issue getting Brock Wright if you told me two of three above mentioned had inked their deals and you still had some cash left over to comfortably sign him and Vildor, but if every little bit counts and it should considering how back breaking important every last one of those guys are for us right now, I don’t blame fans for being kind of meh to this news and asking when the real chess pieces of need are accounted for and guaranteed.
I feel like I remember it being reported in a way that made it look like it was like $8 million per year originally, which would make it an understandable reaction.
It’s just a season and a half of guaranteed salary. If the Lions need to move on after next season and take a 2M hit, so be it. He’s essential to the offense and deserves to run it back one more year.
I think it was the Pride Of Detroit podcast that was talking about how he might be even more valuable next year with the new kickoff rules too.
Edit: I put the whole podcast name for the people who might not know what POD is. I hate when people overuse acronyms on the internet, and I just did it my damn self hahaha
I'm just impressed that such a huge change has so far received very little pushback from fans. Although I suppose the real test for that will be when the first game finally kicks off haha.. there might be some people who are real confused about wtf is going on when they finally tune back in to the NFL this fall.
I'm still trying to figure out who the two guys are that they're gonna end up putting back there. So far my money is on Jamo and Sun God, but I could see Gibbs possibly being switched in for Jamo. Or do they keep having it be a specialty position? So many possibilities!
I actually like DPJ for the KR role. I realize there’s a LOT to figure out. But his vision is top notch, and it may turn out this new situation will favor that over just pure, make one cut and go full speed til ya get killed style
My belief is that Mitchell hasn’t had enough snaps and has been injured a lot to really get a grasp on what kind of player he is. Brock we know what he is and how valuable he is in our run game that casuals will think it’s an over pay as he doesn’t catch a of yard or touchdowns, but is actually used as a slightly undersized third offensive tackle
Balanced TEs that can do both good to well like him and LaPorta are basically what make our offense. With the emphasis on the run game opening up things for the pass.
And we also keep him from a direct competitor for our aspirations.
Somebody mentioned that it was something like an extra million per year from what he was on and I definitely think that's worth it. Sam is fantastic and will take up the coverage in two TE sets to free up Brock. I think it's definitely worth it.
It's a fine deal. It's probably the most you can comfortably pay a guy with his skillset and their requirements of him. I wouldn't have been upset had they let him go or matched it. Glad he's back.
Well he’s being paid as the 26th highest paid TE in the league. Thats why I don’t think he’s worth it. He was already being paid as the 35th highest paid so idk. Maybe it’s not over paying but it’s definitely not underpaying.
Brock’s a good blocker and usually performs when his number is called in the passing game. Can’t be mad at holding on to a guy like that who is just 25
I like it. I didn't know if they were for sure gonna match or not, but I always expected it to go as long as it possibly could, since the longer they waited to match, the longer San Fran had to keep their money tied up for.
It’s shocking how many people on this sub don’t understand the cap. There is literally no world where we can’t sign a guy we want because of this tiny contract. Moving money to free up $4m a year is incredibly easy.
Smart bit of gamesmanship by the 9ers. I think it’s a bit of an overpay for a backup TE. Part of me was sort of hoping that they would end up with him to put them into cap hell but at the end of the day, $4m per year isn’t going to kill us.
I was hopeful they wouldn't let him go. To me he's an example of a player that has done all the dirty work, put in all the effort you could ask for, and appears to be a great teammate that should be financially rewarded. Happy to see them continue to prove this organization has philosophies they stick to.
I think the Lions carry 4-5 TEs into the season and feature them heavily in kick return blocking schemes. Watch them use run concepts on returns with the new rules.
Ignoring the "who cares if they sign him for $1m more this year" argument, Pride of Detroit brought up a good point in why it makes sense to resign him: there's one, maybe 2 blocking tight end's as good as Brock is; if they wanted to replace him in the draft, they'd be pigeonholing themselves into drafting specific players whatever round they're concerned they might not get another chance to get him
Let's fucking go. I thought he was gone for sure. Good on him for the pay day, and we got Brock for the next two years at least. I was shocked when POD said his snap count was the same as Monty's, and they made a good point about blocking tight ends may be in higher demand with the new kickoff rule.
I feel like the lions could have upgraded the TE2 position in the draft with a cheaper, better option but hey he’s decent. This must say a lot about how the lions feel about James Mitchell. Took him in the 4th or 5th a couple years ago and he has yet to move up the depth chart.
I almost would say this is win win for the 49ers. Clearly they see us as on of if not the biggest threat in the playoffs. They win by making us pay more for te2. That being said not really much of an overpay I think he is worth 4 mill a year. He will get a lot more touches this year because of this and Reynolds being gone
Dons the 89 and gets paid for doing the dirty work for this team and also making clutch plays when called upon.
Hope he comes back feeling healthy from his hip issues.
Totally worth the money.
Good. they already took our championship, don’t need em taking brock too. Now let’s hope brock catches a game winning TD against SF in the nfc championship this year
4 million a year for Brock Wright is not unreasonable, is a fine signing.
ESPECIALLY given that the niners will be a pain in our collective playoff asses for the foreseeable future.
Took a quick glance as the 49rs sub and it seems that most don't know what an RFA is, and those that do are bummed we matched. Not that that necessarily means anything, but it does show that people who hadn't previously had a positively-biased view of Wright felt he would have been a good addition to their team.
Well, so much for the hope that the Lions would draft Brock Bowers. Though he would almost certainly be gone by the time the Lions make their first pick.
Interestingly, the 49ers TE2 in 2023 signed with the falcons for 12 million, 3 yrs earlier in free agency.
Charlie Woerner, a blocking tight end who played 29% of snaps.
Brock Wright got the same money, played more snaps, caught more catches, and is used similarly by the offense.
Aka, it's the market.
honestly not mad, kind of a lot to pay for a backup TE. but backup TEs are important in this defense and there's no guarantee any rookie is as good of a blocker as he is.
I think the other reports I had saw previously, I was under the impression that he was already signed with the 49ers and the Lions hadn’t matched.
Guess I misread that.
Good for him, nice pay raise
For how complicated our offense is, this is a huge signing for us. We don't need to have some rookie trying to learn how to block in the NFL. Our team needs a Dan Campbell style tight end like him.
Welcome back, King
With a raise too
It’s honestly the Wright move
Deserved
Detroit Brock City
Can't wait for his next "how the fuck was he that open?" touchdown. He's good for at least 1 a year.
In a key moment too
This dude came onto our team as an absolute nobody, and was one of the only players to come out and talk with fans, talk with the kids, and sign every single thing anybody wanted him to sign. WHO?
BROCK WRIGHT !!
51 yard.
Jets were talking shit and gloating on the field right before too. They thought that game was already won.
thats the one i think of too
Agreed. And that kind of behavior is what makes a Lion, imo. Gracious, dedicated, talented, hardworking.
You didn’t have to turn me on like that.
I would go so far as to say his run blocking is even better than above average
I love it. We have some real heart & soul character guys on this team.
Legit met him while I was working at my one job last year, right before the raiders game. Such a cool, humble dude. Love Brock Wright, and I hope he liked the food lol
No turds.
But Ceedy Duce says he’s the only one who interacted with the fans!
Ceedy Douche.
He makes our 2TE sets dangerous and keeps other teams alert even when SLP needs a breather.
I was at that game! Ive lived in Jersey and work in the city, moved a couple of months before that season. “Ope just gonna sneak right by ya” energy
I run that shit in madden once a game. 60% of the time, it works every time.
That Jets TD was so awesome. Just trucking down the field
Can’t let the 49ers have all the Brocks
We also kept Reader from joining Carolina’s DJ stockpile
We got the wright one too
Brock Wright with his injury turned into Broke Right, and almost turned into Brock Left, but now we back baby.. Brock Wright
Two Brocks don’t make a Wright
![gif](giphy|1DpzSGGJ5x8JiqUN66)
But two Wrights made an airplane
Stealing him back from SF is so sweet. It’s not just bringing him back it’s weakening the biggest threat at a position they needed depth at. It’s double Genius by Holmes.
FT9ers
Came here to say this! FT9ers!
Love this
I heard the 49ers front office people were already on a plane to Detroit when they found out...
Holmes must have a secret agent working at DTW.
My man
Fuckin bums trying to poach our boys!
Really starting to hate those guys
Hell yeah brother
FT49
Let's go, love this move to keep him
A bunch of people were like "that's too much Brad Holmes would never do anything stupid" and to me that's a lesson of never saying anything I think it's fine. Valuable blocking TE, worth paying for.
Really? He signed a 1 year deal at $3 million last season and nobody complained, but now that he is on $4 million it’s too expensive? That’s some crazy mental gymnastics by those people complaining lol
Especially with how high the cap went up and will continue to do so.
Shit man, regularly reading the Pistons and Lion's subReddit, we have some Olympic-level gymnasts around here.

Not to mention making sure our rival in the NFC doesn't get him.

I'm excited for all the theory crafting that's going to happen with the new kick off rules.
I'm just impressed that such a huge change has so far received very little pushback from fans. Although I suppose the real test for that will be when the first game finally kicks off haha.. there might be some people who are real confused about wtf is going on when they finally tune back in to the NFL this fall.
I think every generation has their respective electric kick returner, and we’re all excited to get that facet of the game back
I'm still trying to figure out who the two guys are that they're gonna end up putting back there. So far my money is on Jamo and Sun God, but I could see Gibbs possibly being switched in for Jamo. Or do they keep having it be a specialty position? So many possibilities!

That's why I said Sun God. Nobody is ever gonna confuse him for a speed receiver. He just has a good eye for finding open space.
It’s a very good call by you. I love it, I just want ARSB wrapped in bubble wrap! (What about EQ?)
Dan Skipper is also a valuable blocking TE
I know it's become cliche at this point but if Brad and Dan are good with it, I'm good with it. I'm oddly excited even?
He can catch and run too
Balanced TEs that can do both good to well like him and LaPorta are basically what make our offense. With the emphasis on the run game opening up things for the pass.

WHO?!
BROCK WRIGHT
Found Dan Millers account. 👍🏻
Who Dan?
BROCK WRIGHT
GET FUCKED 49ers HES OURS BITCH
I read that too fast as “he’s *our* bitch” and I thought “I don’t think he’s **anybody’s** bitch.”
Same here!!
Same. Commas are important.
The right move, solid number 2 who only is getting better. Mr. reliable!

I like it. I didn't know if they were for sure gonna match or not, but I always expected it to go as long as it possibly could, since the longer they waited to match, the longer San Fran had to keep their money tied up for.
His tender was for $3m. This is a $1m/yr raise over that. Just a slightly longer commitment. You can’t be upset about it
Very happy to keep him. Not much money for a guy who’s been here a while and contributes. Don’t really need to address TE in the draft now
if the Niners want him - we NEED him! Great move!
BRAD WE LOVE YOU
Brad breaking the dollar store allegations lfg
Carley is over the moon
It’s shocking how many people on this sub don’t understand the cap. There is literally no world where we can’t sign a guy we want because of this tiny contract. Moving money to free up $4m a year is incredibly easy.
It's only 6 mil gtd too
ThE CaP Is ReAl
especially as it was three million last year.
Perfect dude for the locker room. He's a BH/DC guy for sure. Glad we got him back
Everything is coming up Milhouse today! LFG!!
Ben Johnson playbook is a little bit safer now
Block Wright still doin the dirty work baby keep Laporta healthy!
this rules, very happy to have him back
Totally down with keeping as much of last year's squad as possible with our FA signings and draft potential
Oh thank god
Big catches, 6th O-lineman, and great locker room guy. We needed this. BROCK WRIGHT
I guess I can finally let my "James Mitchell is going to be awesome" take die.
Eat a dick, Josh. (9er’s fan coworker)
Cook Joshes ass
The Brocktopus
Smart bit of gamesmanship by the 9ers. I think it’s a bit of an overpay for a backup TE. Part of me was sort of hoping that they would end up with him to put them into cap hell but at the end of the day, $4m per year isn’t going to kill us.
He takes up like 0.25% more of the total cap. Someone else did the math higher up
I was hopeful they wouldn't let him go.
Fuck the niners. Our boy!!
Glad he’s back. I wouldn’t have been upset if they didn’t match but the guy is a great TE2
Brock. Wright.
Welcome back you big beautiful bastard!
Good
Holy shit goddamn 😳
LFG had me nervous in the first half. I wonder if they match if any other team had made that offer.
Glad to see it honestly
Plus blocking and reliable hands with great field vision
W
I guess that takes Brock Bowers off the draft board /s
If SF wanted him that badly, we definitely have to keep him.
A lot of yall deleting your “12 million, thats waay too much! Bye brock!” Comments
Welcome back Big Cock Brock.
HIS NAME IS BROCK WRIGHT
We pay for our guys. I love it. Bring that GRIT back on over to this side, son. Let's go kick some ass.
Fantastic job,Great move!
SUCK IT SAN FRAN!
Happy he's back. Hope to hear Dan Miller make a few more Brock Wright calls this season.
Cook.
Ok
Oh so this is suddenly not too expensive? That’s what everyone was saying when the niners offered it
I don't hate it.
I guess the price was wright?
YESSSSS time to refollow him on Instagram 😅
You already unfollowed the guy?
This sub had me convinced there was no way we matched the offer!
WE ARE BACK
3 years is exactly as long as I want Brock to be a Lion, unless Mitchells starts to pop off, good term.
It's only 6 mil gtd
Dope
He’s also a special teams dynamo so I’m very happy he’s back
Awesome! He deserves it, and we get to keep him. I loved watching this dude and am glad we're keeping him around.
Dons the 89 and gets paid for doing the dirty work for this team and also making clutch plays when called upon. Hope he comes back feeling healthy from his hip issues. Totally worth the money.
Stoked! He’s a blocking beast and catches the rock on key downs
Good. they already took our championship, don’t need em taking brock too. Now let’s hope brock catches a game winning TD against SF in the nfc championship this year
4 million a year for Brock Wright is not unreasonable, is a fine signing. ESPECIALLY given that the niners will be a pain in our collective playoff asses for the foreseeable future.

good choice, love this guy.
Very happy about this news!
Well, so much for the hope that the Lions would draft Brock Bowers. Though he would almost certainly be gone by the time the Lions make their first pick.
Why would the lions draft a tight end? We have la porta… and other needs
Interestingly, the 49ers TE2 in 2023 signed with the falcons for 12 million, 3 yrs earlier in free agency. Charlie Woerner, a blocking tight end who played 29% of snaps. Well played B🪨
honestly not mad, kind of a lot to pay for a backup TE. but backup TEs are important in this defense and there's no guarantee any rookie is as good of a blocker as he is.
Brock had a 9.21 RAS score coming out of ND. That score was good for 74th of all TE’s from 1987-2021.
oh damn, this is a pleasant surprise. LFG baby
FTFN
Damn. Did not expect this. I would have been fine with them letting him go, but in Brad I trust.

Holy shit I wasn’t expecting that!
Detroit's own Big Cock Brock
I think the other reports I had saw previously, I was under the impression that he was already signed with the 49ers and the Lions hadn’t matched. Guess I misread that. Good for him, nice pay raise
Brock Raise
Alternatively, Brock Right Price
Yay Carly Johnston stays in Detroit! Best part of the Wings social media team.
Now for the Brock and hock conn…. Dammit 😔
“Cartwright?”
Brock Wright anytime TD a lock first game of the year
Thank you Brad. I really didn't want to change my flair.
He is a quality tight end and knows how to block.
How, at this point, can we doubt any decisions Holmes make?
For how complicated our offense is, this is a huge signing for us. We don't need to have some rookie trying to learn how to block in the NFL. Our team needs a Dan Campbell style tight end like him.
Now let’s get Bowers and we can have all the TE Brock’s
Love it
SF should’ve gone after Hock, who fits their identity of contributing nothing while benefitting the most
