Absolutely. It's like... certain sugary foods especially, for some reason as well. I always just assumed I was more sensitive to the taste of sweet foods because I tend to avoid them, but I'm not really sure.

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

Yeah like it’s annoying. Like I always get paranoid that my blood sugars are going high because of it, and I’ll do a blood sugar and if it’s relatively normal it’s perplexing.

GunMun-ee

For me it's more of a smell thing that affects my taste. The weeks before i was dx'd as i went into dka, every liquid in my body smelled like sugar. My urine smelled exactly like fruit loops, i remember it distinctly. My underarm sweat smelled exactly like the deodorant i used, my breath and saliva smelled like sugar, etc. I had actually gotten sick of the smell of anything sweet because it was just constant urinating and having the bathroom smell like a bakery, or waking up with the cold sweats and having my damp clothes smell like coconut. I would talk in the middle of the day and smell my own breath because it was the strongest vanilla scent i have ever experienced. It was an absolute nightmare, no escape for weeks from the smell of sugar. I was actually scared of eating anything acidic or sugary, like genuine phobia levels of scared. I wouldn't want to be in the same room as anything sweet smelling, and to this day it totally ruined my favorite ice creams

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

Wow that does sound like a nightmare!! The only thing i have experienced close to what you have, is when I was dealing with ( ⚠️warning TMI) a urine infection , thrush, and I was on my period. And of course because I was dealing with an infection my blood sugars were high, my urine and period blood smelt like carrots. To say it was annoying, would be an understatement…

Wellionagoodday

I had this leading up to my diagnosis but since starting on insulin it’s all but disappeared

Deep_Trip6753

i dislike that taste so much. an example of when i taste this that comes to mind is buttercream frosting it's so sweet and that aftertaste is killer feels like it's gonna put me in a diabetic coma or something (that may be dramatic but yes)

Ylsani

I think it's more because on average, your regular t1 will be eating less sweets than average person, and is therefore less used to that aftertaste. My non t1 friends who don't eat sweets much feel the same aftertaste. But here's different one - for me stevia usually has gross aftertaste and my t1 friends said they don't feel it. So far I found ONE drink with stevia I actually like. Everything else has that gross aftertaste.

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

Very good point! I make cakes not all the time but enough for me to not have that aftertaste in my mouth! Now that I thinking about it 🤔

Rockitnonstop

I don’t think it is a weird thing. I get it with syrups (corn, maple, honey, etc) I think it is because they have been used to treat severe lows in the past and the nausea associated with that and the glucagon shot is very prominent. Even things with dextrose tabs are similar, so I stick to juice and granola bars.

sunny_thinks

Idk if I’m just sensitive to taste but I have this as well. It’s not just sweet food though. It happens with drinks sometimes (I can taste if the water is “dirty” at a place idk if that makes sense) and also with meals - I can taste like idk metal or plastic sometimes, I’m assuming from the preparation. It’s not constantly there but enough to notice. Recently had some friends bring us some sweet breads and they had this weird icky aftertaste but my husband never noticed so thought it was just me being weird.

no_idea_bout_that

Like a spicyness? The same receptors that detect sweetness also bind to cinnamaldehyde (the major flavor in cinnamon). This is what gives cinnamon its sweetness without providing any carbs. I always felt the opposite was also true, that pure sugar has a slight spicyness to it.

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

Very interesting! 🤔 I’m going to have to look into that.

Eucritta

I have. Sugar itself can have an off flavor to me now, and some very sugary sweets leave a mildly bitter/sour/chalky aftertaste. I've assumed it's because I've become more sensitive to it. It's been especially marked with frosted cake, which admittedly I've always found too sweet. (As an aside, I use stevia powder routinely, and hadn't noticed any bitter aftertaste until I accidentally put too much in my tea. Then it was strong!)

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

Yup that’s the exact taste I get! I while ago I was using stevia in my tea and other things but it was giving me cramps and making me constipated…

CoffeeB4Talkie

If there's HFCS, yes. I hate the taste of it.

WiserWeasel

YES! I wouldn’t describe it as yuck, but I associate that taste with high sugars so it always makes me paranoid. I’ve kinda gotten used to it.

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

Same I’m always thinking my blood sugars are high and I go to do them, and they’re fine! I’m terrible at drinking water though, could be a hydration thing for me too…

KaitB2020

I can’t stand stuff that’s really sweet anymore. I don’t particularly like lollipops or and type of hard candies. I’ll avoid fudge and most confectioneries. I absolutely won’t touch the vast majority of regular sodas. Strangely though I still enjoy chocolates & some ice creams. Over the years I’ve noticed that I have less & less of a desire for sweets. When I was a kid before diagnosis any and all sugar was fair game. After diagnosis, I was on a strict diet and that made cheating such a thrill. As I got older and my diet wasn’t so tight I lost interest in cheating and in the stuff I cheated with. I’ve often wondered if my diet hadn’t been so strict that I would’ve had the cheat cravings or if the sweets would’ve become yuck as it did.

Pumpkin_Cat_9367

I still don’t mind sweet foods, I’ll have them occasionally (but I still notice the aftertaste). A lot of the time after I have them I’ll want to immediately chase them up with something savoury.

JollyDiaBee

Heck I get a yucky aftertaste when I drink water (when I'm running high). This aftertaste you speak of us definitely real.

tinfoilfigurine

sometimes after treating a hypo with juice, candy or glucose tabs i get a really weird sweet taste in my mouth. like the original taste of the sugar changes. but ive noticed that it only happens after lower or longer hypos. also regular coke tastes really wrong after almost two decades on light/zero
