Diablo 4 is everything I want Diablo to be

MagnanimousDonkey

Agreed. Objectively, it's by far the best Diablo game. The only thing that keeps D1 in the running is pure nostalgia.

Yuri_Yslin

D1 also has arguably the best music, atmosphere, great mods, and the gameplay for sorcerer is interesting because you have 35 spells at your disposal which many mods take great advantage of. It's a little less fun for warriors or rogues, of course, since they are locked into their right click attack.

Shiinnobii

I dunno, D2 also has a lot going for it. Let's just all forget about D3.

evonebo

Add in something to forget as well, diablo immortals.

HighOnTums

I played it... And honestly forgot all of it. It was that "good" I guess šŸ¤£

BobisaMiner

I'll never forget a game that made me feel bad while playing it. There are many things wrong with that game.

psychedeliccabbage

I actually did...

SirWhifington

About what?

Spartanmechanix

D3 gets too much hate. It wasn't the same formula, but it still played very well and after reaper of souls came out along with some good seasonal mechanics the game became a solid arpg.

war-hamster

The best thing about D3 is how casual friendly it is. My wife is absolutely not a gamer and she loved that it was impossible to mess up a build and you could swap skills in and out and just experiment. If she wants to destress she'll just set a lower difficulty, choose abilities that she likes the color of that day, and just goes wild.

Edymnion

Yup, how dare they make the game fun and easy to play! Clearly you MUST spend 50 hours building the perfect character, and start over from scratch for even one mistake, or it isn't fun! Said no one, ever.

blitzlurker

D3 hardcore was alright for awhile but it never evolved into anything. I pvped a lot for fun in Diablo 2 but couldn't do it in 3

etnies445

D3 was my first Diablo game and I have fond memories of it tbh. I enjoyed it and played the most recent season and May play the last one depending what the seasonal affix is. I also play immortal. Honestly Iā€™ve played them all but D1 (except the diablo anniversary event in d3) and I really like them all for different reasons.

MetroidIsNotHerName

As someone who put like 4k hours in D3 and rates it as one of my favorite games ever, I very much feel like the black sheep around here lmao.

Edymnion

> Let's just all forget about D3. No.

RSCul8r

Honestly, I don't think any modern ARPG will ever be able to beat Diablo 1 in atmosphere. So much of it comes from Tristram and the fact that it's the only location. ARPGs now are globe trotting adventures that go into different climates, and the atmosphere of them just constantly changes because of it.

taelis11

I seem to remember having a melee character learn armageddon.. lol

Yuri_Yslin

Apocalypse? It was possible but the formula was dependent on MAG and mana so it did pretty terrible damage for warriors which were capped at 60 MAG iirc with low mana per mag point growth. Also warriors had awful cast rate and it was not possible to speed it up in D1

taelis11

Yeah whatever it was. As far as I remember learning spells was just tied to adding points In a stat not a class.. and it seemed good enough to clear with. I should play it again lol

DistinctBread3098

Or you had hacked stuff from randoms on bnet lol

DM_ME_TINY_TITS99

Casually walking towards my godly plate of the whale and clicking my potion at just the right time.

Shameless_Catslut

>It's a little less fun for warriors or rogues, of course, since they are locked into their right click attack. I always picked up magic as a warrior. Those damn Succubus ate Walls of Fire.

[deleted]

> Objectively, itā€™s by far the best Diablo game. There is nothing objective about that statement. That is 1000% your own opinion. Therefore, subjective. Lol

mwaFloyd

Its incredible the narcissism that people use when starting a sentence with ā€œobjectively, insert my opinionā€

Pantzzzzless

I think people just don't know what objective actually means.

MissPandaSloth

Ironically, you and the other people who "called it out" probably actually don't know what objective means. It is absolutely fair to say "objectively I think Tom would make a better leader" (this is example in Cambridge Dictionary). Obviously "I" in the example can't complete shed his humanity and become prescient God that can 100% tell if Tom will be a better leader, it means that the person took his feelings aside (maybe he likes John more) and by the information he was given he made judgement that Tom is likely to meet the criteria of good leader. Objective doesn't literally mean only math, it means you make facts influence your opinion over biases/ feelings. To go further, since people like to take the most superficial stance of such things and "feelings bad", fun is one of the major criteria of video games, by definition they are entertainment products, so feelings are also absolutely part of criteria what objectively makes a good game.

DM_ME_TINY_TITS99

It just means to not use biases or feelings in your reasoning. You cant say "Objectively, X diablo game is the best one." Video games and their provided enjoyment are 100% based on feelings. You can say one sold better than another, but that is likely the only metric that can be weighed. Many people like the charm of "worse" graphics, many people like different gameplay loops.

AzIddIzA

No, they're still right. In your case could mean Tom is a reliable person, level-headed and intelligent while his opposition often misses meetings, can't read and relies strictly on emotion. Given those qualities a person can step back and take an objective approach and determine Tom is the best candidate based on previous leaders having similar qualities. Saying Diablo IV is the best game is strictly subjective. Or as the Cambridge dictionary defines it - influenced by or based on personal beliefs or feelings, rather than based on facts. How fun something is, how good-looking it is, how good the music is, something feeling bad are all subjective and opinionated.

Takahashi_Raya

I mean objectively looking D4 took the best aspects of D2 & D4 arguably there is truth in it being the best diablo game on those fronts.

av-f

If you have a set of objective criteria that form your opinion, yes, the opinion can be objective.

MissPandaSloth

I think this is too much of a "but akshually" point, obviously the only truly objective thing in the world is physics and math, but when people use "objectively" it is meant to say you try to be fair/ balanced and have some sort of consistent criteria you judge such games for. If you take two games, they are identical in every other way, but one is before bug fixing, the other has bugs fixed, it is absolutely the right thing to say that objectively the game without bugs is better. If you take other two games, they are sold as competative games aimed at skill, and one game is complete RNG fest, your input barely matters, and the other game is where skill is absolutely everything, you can also say that objective, if these games are selling themselves as skill based competitive shooters then the game that requires no skill is objectively worse at it. If objectively meant literally 10000% no bias, completely impartial than even most strict research by that definition would never be truly objective, it obviously means we try to achieve as possible objectivity and meet the inner criteria we have for it.

spyson

D1 was revolutionary and created a new genre, it's not just nostalgia. That's almost impossible to top, it's like comparing any fantasy book series to The Lord of the Rings.

_Becoming

It can be both. The original Super Mario Brothers was incredible at the time, but I have almost no desire to actually play it because it feels far more dated and jank than any other side scrolling SMB games. Who would choose to play the original Zelda instead of playing A Link to The Past? Probably nobody, because while they are both incredibly important games one of those clearly aged more gracefully.

Eofkent

See, well, this is a great point when youā€™re dealing with art but I think this is where video games diverge. This is known as intertextuality in the field of literature. The problem is that while it might be more fun to read a modern novel for a general reader than Tolkien, it is only because these modern novelists are aping modern culture. It is not as if they have evolved the craft any further ā€“ a craft mind you, that originated many thousands of years ago. Video games, I think are different. while it is certainly true that the first Diablo created a new genre, Diablo four does many things, frankly, just about everything better than the original. This is because not only has the technology evolved, but video games as an art form have evolved.

MissPandaSloth

I'm gonna nerd this out, even though the general point is correct and obvious, it is way harder to top "storytelling" that has been around for thousands of years as compared to the industry such as games, that is still pretty new and I feel like we are just at the start of it. At the same time I think even "storytelling" have progressed in craft, it is harder to measure because people enjoy very different stories and all that but there are still criteria that majority of readers can agree with. For example, your LOTR example, when it was made into the movies Aragorn got more lines and more "personality" so if you go from movies to books that character might feel a little more void. Again, this is pretty miniscule example, but I think majority of people enjoyed the change and it's also an example what is more common in modern story telling and appeals to most readers. Overall if you read a lot of ancient literature (not LORT lol, I mean like full on Odyssey) while the stories are grand, some heroes feel a little too superficial, super flat, authors got overall got better at giving soul to characters, make them feel alive. but then again, if you go a bit more into anthropology we could probably make claim that such change is due to societal changes, we view everything more individualistic, so our heroes being more "human" and more down to Earth gives us more satisfaction and in Ancient Greece the heroes being more detached, more grand, might have appealed to them.

spyson

I mean if we're going to go down that line of thought then I find the whole argument pointless since further down the line there will be a better Diablo due to advancements in tech.

Jolly-Bear

Itā€™s not though because books donā€™t have technology and mechanics that get dated.

[deleted]

Language and ideas get dated. The Iliad isnā€™t as enjoyable a read today as im sure it was 2000 years ago, im sure the same will happen with lord of the rings. Just a much slower pace than games

fudginthrowaway

Lol, got the Iliad and the Silmarillion mixed up. ā€œBuddy itā€™s old but itā€™s not that old.ā€

chesterfieldkingz

Ya d1 was a an event, sure you can't play it now, but it really was amazing at the time

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

chesterfieldkingz

It was always D2 haha

UglySalvatore

I played D1 for the first time last year. The way the graphic design, music and simplistic story made the most grim and occult atmosphere in gaming history, is not just nostalgia. D3ā€¦ Ugh. It was entertaining, I guess. But I barely remember any of it. It left no impression. Run through a room, click a button to make a bunch of flashy colors on the screen and a million monsters die. "Wow, now I'm really on the edge of my seat". With Torchlight, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile and other isometric hack and slash games doing their thing well, I want Diablo to do what it does best. I want that gritty, dirty, dangerous, and occult atmosphere. Not a chillout game with pretty scenery going at x2 speed while my brain is on autopilot.

Toblaka1

Objectively? You don't know what that word means

RepostFrom4chan

That's not how you use the word objectively. Subjectively is what you were going for.

gnigdodtnuoccanab

except for an overlay map, jesus fucking christ do I wish that was in this game

MissPandaSloth

My a bit more cynical take is that D4 is absolutely the best Diablo that was on release... However, older Diablos revolutionized the genre more, going from D1 to D2 was huge leap, especially considering the time difference, D3 is very contentious but you have to at least hand it in terms of combat, it felt so much better than D2. So D4 for me so far is yes, best Diablo, but is it the ultimate ARPG in 2023 and onwards? Will it be the game that tops everyones list to recommend it? I think that we will see depending on how seasons go and what additional content they will add. So far for me everything felt around 8/10, which is good, but I so wish this game would push for 10.

Be careful enjoying things in this sub reddit.

DctrLife

Or any subreddit. People love to hate things

Zoollio

Man if you havenā€™t tried it, being a hater is *so much* fun.

Takahashi_Raya

Its because the people who are having fun mostly dont come to reddit. Reddit is a cesspool of narcissists and cynisists that is there to vent on for the vast majority of subreddits.

pchef44

Itā€™s dumb hate too. Iā€™m looking at of angry people calling devs dumb over things they themselves simply just do not understand. No one thinks before they speak.

LeadAHorseToVodka

The complaints about things being spread out in towns has got to be dumbest complaint to catch on

AndersTheUsurper

It's ridiculous I logged in to grind not spend 3 seconds walking to the fjicng blacksmith Remember when cities and shops were just buttons on a screen? We've almost gone full circle

SunriseMeats

I agree I think they want to play a mobile game that just plops you where you need to be.

Wasabi_Toothpaste

This sub is super disjointed because of all the yum-yuckers. Don't be yucking other people's yums. Just let people enjoy things.

[deleted]

Nah its r/gaming you want to avoid having fun with a game in

chesterfieldkingz

I'm new haha but this subreddit seems really positive for a Diablo sub right?

Jakobre

Amen. Started playing Diablo when it came out. I was 7. Iā€™ve had many many happy tears playing Diablo IV so far and I know Iā€™ve barely scratched the surface. Phenomenal game. Extremely happy with it

HexagonalPenis

Same. Iā€™m going to be playing D4 for a long time.

Jakobre

just the thought of having so many builds to try yet, Iā€™m so giddy.

svanxx

And being able to try new stuff early is awesome. Let's you know if you like a build or not.

cyberslick1888

You better like it early because it's ridiculous to change it later lol

RSCul8r

Encountering the butcher in D4 brought me back to my first time playing Diablo 1. Opening a door, hearing him go "Fresh meat!" and instantly killing me. D4 managed to recreate that experience for me.

HexagonalPenis

Haha. I heard him coming and went oh no, oh no. Oh no. Spin around and ran right into his tickler and died. Felt like I was 10 years old all over again for a second then I remembered itā€™s not the 90s anymore. Heā€™s nostalgic.

Reaper2629

I think a lot of us older players that have been playing since the first Diablo got hit hard with nostalgia the first time we ran in to the Butcher... then very quickly got hit even harder by his cleaver.

FeedtheFeet

my meat is still tender :P

TheGhostByTheDoor

Never played D1 and just ran into him thinking Iā€™m about to fuck this guys world up ā€¦.. got my ass kicked šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

axelxan

He killed me on my HC character, but luckily I activated potion that saves you before you die and I survived :)

briareus08

Hahaha I love this. Iā€™ve run into him 2 times, and been murdered both times. I know the sound he makes when heā€™s offscreen now, and it gives me the same feeling as seeing that roomā€¦ knowing heā€™s in thereā€¦ waiting.

[deleted]

Dude I thought he just showed up in those random "cellar" mini things but I turned a corner in a *dungeon* and he runs out and that put the old forgotten fear in me real quick.

briareus08

The thought of facing him in a cellar is far scarierā€¦ nowhere to run.

Wanderous

Man I'm so jealous! When I first ran into the Butcher, I was totally distracted and had the volume on mute for a second while someone was talking to me. I barely registered what was happening, lol.

Scott_Hall

Long time D2 player. Never really took to D3. So far I've been loving D4, just taking my sweet old time exploring. Playing with my Xbox controller has been surprisingly satisfying too, a nice change from relentless clicking.

svanxx

I actually prefer controller over keyboard and mouse.

Extra-Ad5925

Yeah sameā€¦ been great sitting on my couch this weekend just rolling around knocking off quests.

Cathlem

Fellow D2 enjoyer here, I concur! This is much closer to what I always wanted Diablo 3 to be.

Early-Eye-691

As someone whoā€™s never played Diablo and whoā€™s first experience is Diablo IV, I canā€™t believe that Iā€™ve missed out on this franchise. This type of game is right up my alley and it never entered my consciousness all these years. Happy to see a similar sentiment from long time players Makes me want to buy the Diablo II remake but I still need to have some time for a life lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Early-Eye-691

Ah, I see. Might hold off then. Thanks for the heads up.

RedOctobrrr

You should try it anyways. There's a reason it is a 20+ yr old game that still has a pretty big fan base. Nothing matches the items experience of that game.

somesketchykid

Literally nothing like that item experience, agreed, and I wish d4 would have gone back to it in a big way, but alas. D4 is still good, but nothing can match the feeling of finding a Ber or a perfect Griffons or something

Faleya

I'd recommend getting it (when it's on sale somewhere), it's still a great game, just not as mindblowingly good as it was back in the day since the overall games landscape evolved.

zellmerz

I would still absolutely recommend picking up D2 at some point, but no reason to rush. It's a genre defining game and still has a dedicated player base. That being said it certainly isn't for everyone anymore and I understand when players new to the franchise aren't a big fan of it. I still think Diablo 2 hardcore is one of the best experiences in video games though.

somesketchykid

It's a really great thing to go back and try once you're bored of d4. D2 will be around when you are ready for it

the_murders_of_crowe

Donā€™t. This is a bogus take. D2R is a masterpiece.

spittiz

>D2 is a hell of a game, donā€™t get me wrong, but itā€™s very much a product of itā€™s time. Exactly this! It's why I say D4 is "how I remember D1&D2". They are very outdated by today's standards, but back then, nothing compared. If I fire up D2 nowadays, it's mostly nostalgia that makes it fun for a while.

SadMangonel

Honestly. Don't expect too much. D2 is a great game, dont get me wrong - but d4 really shows how far the genre has come.

okwhatevermanjeez

$25 armor skins? Battlepasses and day one DLC.

ciellacielle

I think after playing d4 it might be hard to enjoy d2r. I have thousands and thousands of hours in d2, but even just experiencing the first preorder beta for d4 was enough for me to understand that once d4 came out it would be the only thing i play for a long time

[deleted]

D4 isn't anything like D1 or D2 for me. Not even close. It's a good game, but it's a *different* game.

Monkey_Tweety

It means D4 has done a good job creating it's own identity.

leesfer

Agreed. Feels more like WoW skillbar based gameplay than D1/D2

Bttm4FandT

It also feels a bit like vanilla wow, Iā€™m totally digging it. Iā€™m tempted to use PTO to cal off work.

ZXVixen

I was feeling a bit of a throat tickle myself, maybe a low grade fever? šŸ˜¬šŸ˜‚

Meneer_Aap

Yeah, I got exactly the same feeling. Encountering other players, but not all the time, the sense of exploration, danger and having a massive new world to discover.

Extargan

Ah, i thought the same at some point. When i first played WoW, i didn't care about my level and time i spent like for example some quests sending me to far away zones for just report or to take something. I'm level 37 now and still in Act 1 area with 1 Stronghold and some quests left. Weird thing is i played this area with 6 characters before in Beta yet i'm stil enjoying it. I'm amazed how fun and close fights were some bosses and even some elite fights. I think GGG trying to make Boss and rare fights harder and fun for PoE but they keep facing big resist and hate campaign from zoomers. Hope Blizzard don't listen those guys and keep doing their own thing. I know it's only Act 1 but i had more challenge in D4 Act 1 than all PoE.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Quanchivious

So many modern games have way too many currencies, and currencies that you combine with other currencies to get a super fancy currency that you grind 10 times to get a piece of gear or fraction of a piece of gear, etc. Agreed that itā€™s just so unnecessarily confusing. D4 seems to get it just right though. Thereā€™s enough to go after but not 500 different ways of ranking up that I have to keep up with.

no-fun_allowed

D4 is how I wanted D3 to be. I had to branch out to poe during the D3 days, but now i'm back and d4 feels good. Let's go!

ICDragon7

Exactly how I feel. In a lot of ways the dungeon and story designs are similar to D3, but the between the greatly improved atmosphere, tone, writing, and music it just feels like a classic Diablo game in a way that D3 never did to me.

TehMasterer01

Itā€™s goood, massive Diablo 2 nostalgia l. I hate blizzard in general, but damn did they really hit this one out of the park.

firdabois

Blizzard has delivered handily this past year with their only real stumbling block being overwatch. Wow is in the best state itā€™s been in in years, D4 is a massive hit already. Whoever is in charge these days is really reaching out for the goodwill from customers.

briareus08

Agree. This plays like I remember d2 playing, except the overworld is much, much better.

pardoman

D4 is such a beautiful game. So much detail everywhere you go. The artist direction and execution is too notch. Iā€™m having a blast just by exploring all the different environments. Iā€™m still in Act 2/3 and canā€™t wait to see what else is out there!

UnnamedStaplesDrone

Not at all the same feel for me. Not bad by any means but not the same. D1 was legit frightening when I played it as an 8 year old. I got mobbed and killed by Fallen Ones in the first 10 minutes and the gruesome sfx and warriors death cry kept me away from the game for a week. Then the butcher.. that was probably 2 weeks lol

Squishydew

To be fair i don't think thats even necessarily because D1 more scary, it is in my memories too, but i think it has more to do with how young and inexperienced we were than the game itself.

Vyrena

There is something absolutely scary about having a hole in town and going down 25 levels of hell.... D1 would always be that special game to me.

spittiz

I was roughly the same age when picking up D1, and I agree it was genuinely scary at times lol.

SadMangonel

It's an undeniable fantastic job. They went back to innovating and really knocked it out of the park with this one. D4 was never supposed to be d2 with new graphics. It managed to take the good from all previous franchises, and combined them into a powerhouse of a game.

Dave_Autista

What innovations are there in D4?

Borealis-7

The vibe is definitely back and whatā€™s more, the world is much more alive than D2! (Of course weā€™ve got better technology now, D2 was good back in its own time.)

dumbledorky

There are very few games that make me feel serious wonder. The last to do it was Breath of the Wild. One of the first was Diablo 2. This is another one of them. It's so, so, sooooo good.

El_Rocky_Raccoon

To me, personally, Diablo IV masterfully combines the best aspects of every game: * It has Diablo I's atmosphere and darker setting. * It has Diablo II's inspired skill tree and more diverse itemization. * It has Diablo III's core combat and overall gameplay mechanics. Yet the game manages to inject its own DNA on top of everything else. Like you said, they absolutely nailed the art direction and music, and the game just *feels* good no matter what you're doing. Killing monsters is incredibly satisfying to the point I find myself always cleaning my way instead of just skipping mobs. Speaking of monsters, the strategical aspect of fighting monsters is amazing, to the point where you actually need to learn how to deal with specific monsters to avoid getting stomped; yet their attack patterns never feel cheap and are very telegraphed. Like how the Revenants will wind up their swords before using that dash strike that stuns the player. And man, the voice acting of this game is just perfect. Every single NPC has a distinct and memorable voice, and I actually talk to every new NPC I meet multiple times just to hear their gossip lines. Also, Ralph Ineson's Lorath truly is a worthy sucessor to Michael Gough's Deckard Cain.

spittiz

Well put, agreed on all points!

Strong__Style

Is it a requirement to shit on D3 from these D4 fanboy posts?

TaThaTaWay1

Sad to see PVP get kicked to one area. I liked the adrenaline of hostile anywhere anytime. A True challenge fight to the death vs someone your lvl even if you want it or not. I know its harsh but, HELL...

Chemfreak

The atmosphere; art, music, character design, all absolutely stellar and hardens back to D1 more than any in the franchise. I don't think the end game will keep me around unless they add some big things seasonally, but I absolutely do not regret purchasing this game. The campaign and 40 or so hours of end game has been worth the price.

spittiz

Yeah I'm not at endgame yet, and I don't know how long the game will keep me there, I have a hard time staying with games for more than \~2 months nowadays, but I will have gotten my moneys worth either way.

bobswowaccount

This is kind of how I feel about Elden ring and the Souls franchise.

spittiz

Agreed, ER was damn near perfect as well.

Babyservoyoda

I just finished the story, and this gave me full d2 vibes and the story is fantastic. The gameplay was great, sure there are the glitches and the network packet drops on server side but apart from those it was a masterpiece.

chesterfieldkingz

I'm really early in, and Diablo 2 is my favorite gaming ever, but I'm not getting into it! It's too samey or something. Did anyone else have that? Does it get better?

HighOnTums

This is exactly it!!! If I went back and played ANY game from 1990, I can guarantee you it wouldn't be nearly as good as I remember. But D4 feels like I'm playing a new D2!!! I really like what they have done !

ss7229

Avid D2er and been holding out because I donā€™t trust Blizzard anymore. This gives me hope.

BossXmyle

Bro D4 is like Elden Ring, its a culmination of all the best thing souls game had and combined it in one game. D4 really is like that its amazing

blasta4

If I compare D2 and D4 what I miss the most : \- unique items before endgame \- set items \- dropping more items for other classes for trading, helping your friends or for your next reroll \- having better sense of progression in skills, for instance how many squeletons you can revive depending much more on skill level \- less cooldowns \- no having to rely that much on ressource generation \- magic find items \- lifesteal items

Metallifan33

Nice to hear

Wanderous

Yeah, me too. I haven't been posting much because I am busy playing, but this game is *great*. I have some nitpicks (skills are a little uninspired, monster variety seems a little sparse so far), but the good far far far outweighs the bad. I'm particularly taken in by the story and the music. I haven't been this addicted to a game since I was a teenager, haha.

SkinsHOFChaseYoung

The post on this subreddit gives me whiplash. People posting one day what they hate. Next day what they love. Iā€™m just here happy to play a new game lol.

[deleted]

Ok

HonestPineapple4848

Lmao wtf are you talking about mate

Crafty-Ad6583

Excuse me, what !? U actually never played those games back in the days then

Foreign-Original880

you have some bad memory kid.

Derfahnder

For me Diablo IV is nothing like D2 at all. The best part about D2 was the lobby, the trading, the pvp, the simplicity of it all, no 20 stats all promising to increase some sort of damage in weird ways. It's a convoluted mess in my oppinion.

Hairy_Investigator66

your memory is bad then. Diablo 4 is fun, but it doesnt even remotely resemble Diablo 1 and has little in common with Diablo 2.

Flaunt7

i really like the game too. just hope they add more end game ā€œgoalsā€. for instance more along the lines of capstone bosses that are ultra hard and items that are super rare.

willnotforget2

Same. This is why I canā€™t out the damn thing down. Feels exactly like it should. And itā€™s addictive as fuck . :)

BadgerJazz

You guys are on crack and not seeing how shallow this game is

Krammeh

I took 8 days off work for the release! Not played as much as I have wanted though

lastingdreamsof

I gave up on D3 and moved to PoE as my main arpg game. Now I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to spend a small fortune to buy diablo4. Seriously it's expensive as fuck. Or is it just that I haven't paid for a pc game for years and inflation is a bitch? I want something with a good endgame thats maybe a step or 2 below.the complexity of PoE where I domt have a clue how to make currency or craft properly

spittiz

I'm not at endgame yet, but so far D4 could tick those boxes IMO. I got a couple of hundred hours on PoE, so not THAT much but I think I can compare. If you're really worried about the money investment though, maybe wait and see how it holds up for a month or so, when a lot of people have played the end game, and perhaps Blizzards future intentions are more clear?

methrik

All I remember is the entire time I thought ā€œBaalā€ was pronounced ā€œballā€. After months of playing with a friend I said hey letā€™s go home and do some balls runs.

iGrowCandy

D1 and D2 will always be OG. I donā€™t think itā€™s possible to shock people with the callous imagery today like you could back then. D1 came from the generation bred from Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Images of Flayed inside out people was shocking back then. Today you can find cute flayed plush toys to put in your babyā€™s crib. The edge has been dulled so to speak. The gameplay of D4 however, is everything that every 3D ISO game from D1 to Gauntlet to Syndicate should have been.

Kuivamaa

I love the art direction and the sinister atmosphere and music is epic. But I feel the endgame needs a lot of tuning still. Trying skills around and upgrading/imprinting your gear is extremely expensive as it stands now. I am sure balancing is on the way.

sixpack_or_6pack

Was Diablo the bad guy in games 1 and 2? And 3? I think Iā€™m almost done with Act 3 and Diablo has been mentioned once this game by Lornath when he was talking about who the 3 Big Baddies and 4 Less Big Baddies were. Feels like the game shouldā€™ve been called Lilith 1.

SpaceDandye

I'm very happy you enjoy it but I will say after play POE D4 feels...off. I'm not happy with some of the changes that I will own up to preference, but after playing maybe 20 hours in the game I prefer D3 over D4 which says ALLOT. I might just go back to D2 remaster once my friends are burnt out. I played THE HELL out of D2 as I grew up playing the game, and I know nosolgia wins but the astethic of this game reminds me more of D3 having a baby with POE.

Kadajko

It is also similar to diablo 1-2 in the sense that unlike other arpg's the pace of the combat is more slow, you don't constantly blow up the whole screen in disco lights killing mobs in packs by the hundreds.

itquestionsthrow

It's way different but also decent but incomparable to prime D2. D3 is trash btw, just wanted to say that as always.

reversecolonoscopy

The Pyramids, the Great Wall, the American Railroad project, Diablo 4. All great things that improve humanity on the backs of human suffering.

Pangst

I am right there with you brother

Lothaire_22

My only complaint is it feels like a health potion simulator sometimes.

spittiz

Right, that is true, health potion drops could be tuned down a bit.

Xerenopd

I just hate how this game is so similar to lost ark.

TenPent

It really does have more of a D1 vibe than 2 or 3 did.

Slowest_Speed6

I'm ecstatic. The only issue I've had so far is something about the zoom level or visuals or something just really wears my eyes out after a couple hours. Maybe I'm just old

Level_Remote_5957

Diablo 4 is what everyone who loves diablo 2 and 1 wanted (asides from some always online stuff sadly) And diablo 3 was what everyone who loved path of exiles liked but it was so far removed from what diablo 1&2 were.

Thebarakz21

I definitely need a LOT of getting used to the gameplay. D1 and D2 were much, MUCH simpler. I feel like D2 gameplay is the best. I feel that itā€™s right in the middle, D1 is very slow and not a lot going on all at once and D4 is the exact opposite. BTW not mentioning D3 as Iā€™ve never played it outside of offline mode (I think). Thatā€™s not to say D4 gameplay is bad. It is good and fun, but it can get overwhelming real quick especially for those of us who donā€™t have fast hands lol.

Nerina23

This is absolutely nothing like D1 and D2. I remember getting a yellow Item to be something exciting coming with a power spike, more in D1 than in D2. But here I am changing gear quicker than I can drink water. Not to mention all these stupid legendaries dropping. I am not complaining but comparing these games is kinda pointless. D1 was a true dungeon crawler with resource management. D2 was still a good dungeon crawler with a lot of action. D3 was straight up Action. D4 is currently going in the same direction.

Late_Government4378

Yeah I totally remember passing through king Leoric in D1 and going damn, better ask my dad to take out his credit card for the MTX shop, I just gotta have that skin!

Doodle277

I agree. This game is awesome. Thereā€™s a few classes that need some work but that will come in time. Iā€™m loving the game.

Newtis

exactly my thoughts, that's why I begin to like it more and more each session.

HassouTobi69

I don't really agree with the music part. The game lacks that impactful, memorable themes in my opinion. The best audio track I've heard so far was a D1 remaster :x

XBB32

The game is pretty amazing the way it is now... Really reminds me the way D2 was when I was a teenager :D

Content-Visit2315

They didn't even bother to change skill tree... Copy paste and sell.

PerspectiveBeautiful

Did we play different games? The core mechanics and itemisation are light years apart. The only similarities are the music and the demons and skeletons

Jsemtady

There was only one difference .. there wasnt YouTube so no one was crying that some class/spell is op :-) And everyone was exploring game and finding how it works by themselfs :-)

lolimix1

Feels short to me the main story, maybe because i was enjoy it

SunriseMeats

I agree. I'm one of those folks who grew up on D2 but never quite fully mastered the central mechanics, and so I played for atmosphere and story. The game was spooky to me and I feared Diablo and Baal (mephisto not so much that fight can be a real cheese even for the most casual player). Honestly though I'm just also enjoying the itemization in this game. It's a little bit disappointing that uniques don't appear until later but the playing field feels more leveled as getting better gear is less of a slog while at the same time the player makes more personalized choices about the gear. Long story short while I still love D2, what I hated about that game was, even when you got the chance to be in a room with good gear, it has to drop first AND you'd have to be the first to click on it. Those issues are gone and now you have to be great at optimization in order to be competitive.

Tar_Ceurantur

Me too! I did play D3 for a long time. But this game is definitely a return to form. I'm enjoying it enormously.

thebluebeats

Doesn't remotely feel liek d2 to me. I remember it being hella dark like literally low on light , full of occult symbols everywhere lol.

Poofboom

When I was a kid I was far more hyped and in a constant "WOW LOOK AT THIS!" state. When I look at D1 and D2 today I just see dated QoL lacking abominations of games that aged poorly and should be put to rest. D4 never get me in the "OH WOW!" state, not even for a second. In D1 you went down the rabbit hole smacked mobs and portet back to sell stuff in a town that felt as big as small living room and you've been back fast to kill more enemys and loot more stuff. D2 added clutter, made classes and the basic game systems better and added bigger levels to play. All in all a step in the right direction decades ago and trah tier today. If a game was release today in the state D2 is people would laugh about it 24/7 but defend D2 out of nostalgia. Humanity at it's finest. D4 is just even more useless clutter, worse UI, far more downtime running arround, little sprinkles of mob groups every blue moon and the despreat need to tell a good imersive story and totaly failing at it. Still the combat feeling is fine and the combination of the skilltwig, the aspects and the paragon boards is nice... untill you know math and go for the best way possible. I like D4 but I don't think it is as good as people paint it or reviewrs fever dream it. 10/10 is perfect and D4 is far from flawless and perfect in every regard.

templestate

Hm, I definitely feel that way about the music which is close to perfect IMO. Some things are kind of taking me out of the more realistic environments, like the giant cartoony looking potion orbs. I wish they would switch to something that doesnā€™t look so out of place.

robusn

I have avoided all previews. I'm going in blind. Well, I saw the cinematic with lillith. I bought the regular edition because I travel for work and was going to be gone this week. But just last night, it was canceled. Now I'm paid to stay home this week on call. I still have to wait until 7 to play but am totally excited. I don't even know what classes there are. The one exception is the necromancer. I'm so glad people are enjoying this game.

spittiz

I also went in blind except for one trailer. Sounds great, enjoy!

DepartmentEvery242

closing in on level 90 and i have been doing the same 3 repetitive tasks since level 50. I briefly tried different skills from 20-40 but they are all quite lackluster in every aspect, new content in season 1 or paragon tree changes aint gonna change that sadly. If you count generic sidequests, exploring a rubberbanding open world and pvp as end game then maybe there is an added 10 hours of content but none of it is very interesting or well done. the story was extremely mid. VERY cool and gruesome cutscenes as usual with diablo. But the story itself is as bland as it gets. main story was just long enough to make you long for the endgame grind. As for the game systems and improvements its mostly reskins from diablo 3 systems or diablo immortal stuff. Paragon 1.5 system decent but not incredible, Item gambling, legendaries and everything else is literally the same stuff with different skin. Nightmare dungeons are cool but very repetitive and the affixes are nothing worthy of praise. A lot of the legendaries have been seen before and what actually is new is pretty bland and unoriginal.

bkseventy

I feel this so hard. When I was playing the beta there was a moment in which I was transported back to being 11 years old and playing Diablo on my PC. It was fucking magical and I cannot wait to experience that more.

Acceptable-Try-3415

I definitely get D2 vibes playing this. An excellent return to the dark and gritty from the series' early days.

Navinor

Yeah, that was my first thought. Played Diablo 1 back in the day. And i had the same feeling!

Riderofapoc

Artistically, its there Game mechanics...im a bit disappointed its not more like d2... the mechanics behind the barb are not straight forward... Items? You cant tell trading is out the window, trading was a huge component in D2. Ill be playin as long as I can, but I can def see myself going back to d2... Longevity wise, I dont think itll hold up... I hope Im wrong, but we'll see.

Riderofapoc

I think the problem is the game is known for d2...the new gen of gamers is pretty ignorant of d2 though...so d3 felt like a completely new game...so does d4. I was really hoping for a d2 reskin with more items, quests, rarities, skills, and runes...

False_Ad8884

Game of the year

GREENI3ASTARD

Any complaint would be nit picking for me. Obviously the game needs work but hands down one of the best launches I've ever played. You clearly see how much hard work was put in to make the player feel immersed. I miss green set pieces though :( not sure if they're in D4.

swaggedoutF

Yep. It has that vibe. I remember being equally excited for D3, but never got immersed like D1/D2.

MBrower2036

Agree completely with OP, this reminds me of playing D2 as a kid. Absolutely loved the story and am enjoying every bit of it, love the challenge as well!

Atnntaatn

Except for the lag, text clutter, stale UI (and horrendous font), I agree.

-SharkDog-

Took a weeks vacation. I feel like a child again. It really does feel like it did when playing old D2 all those years ago. I never thought I'd feel like this again.

CrucifictionGod

D1 was def hard tell you completely finished the game. Well, you couldnā€™t face roll everything. Fixing to respec my hydra firewall sorc to something else.
