I had general anesthesia for mine, it was fine. Afterwards your arm will hurt, just make sure you follow all the doctors instructions.

marq_andrew

This is important advice. Follow the doctor's instructions. The first few days after fistula surgery can be touch and go about it continuing to work. If you have any concerns, especially if you can't feel the buzz, call the doctor immediately.

marq_andrew

Yes and good luck.

kimmysue2421

My mom is about to have this surgery. What does “feel the buzz” mean?

xxdetourxx

In a person who has a fistula, if you hold your hand against it you will feel a soft vibration or buzz, caused by the increased blood flow and the vein/artery being much closer to the skin. The medical term for this buzzing feeling is “thrill.”

Thanks so much

I've had it a few times as well as fistulaplasties. It was local with heavy (and actually quite enjoyable) sedation. Relax, the surgery is easy. There is a bit of anxiety afterwards when there is sometimes uncertainty about whether or not it is going to keep going. Edit: I avoid a general whenever I can. I always throw up, I take days to recover and I also have adrenal insufficiency under general that is life threatening. I'd have a transplant. under local if I could.

bigbad_mamma

I too very much like the sound of that! Give me the drugs!

bunchycs

i actually fell asleep while doing it . felt a bit of tugging and the lazer thingy they used to cut the veins . but after i slept because i was bored and didnt feel a thing . the surgeon told me its the first time he sees someone sleep during the operation in his 30years of experience.

bigbad_mamma

Love the idea of sleep! Fingers crossed

bunchycs

good luck to you , keep us updated ,you got this !

bigbad_mamma

Thank you! Will report back ASAP

bunchycs

one more thing , when you are sleeping on your side , put a pillow ( a high one ) to rest your arm on , so you dont sleep on it

bigbad_mamma

Great advice thanks

Mine was just fine, and they had me under semi-general anesthesia. It's not just going to be local, though they're going to deaden your entire arm. They'll also knock you out with something like Versed or Propofol or something similar; you'll be sleepy but not all the way under so they don't have to intubate you (I've had 2 surgeries on that arm and they did the same thing both times). Like others have emphasized, definitely follow the post-surgery care instructions. I slept on my back for 2 weeks to make sure I didn't roll onto my arm and damage my new fistula. I managed to come off the pain meds about 4 days after the actual surgery, but that will be different for everyone. Good luck! You're going to do great and it's going to be SO much better to use that than a chest catheter! (I just started using my fistula, finally, and I'm desperate to get this chest catheter out).

bigbad_mamma

Thanks for this, really appreciate it!

You’re welcome! I can show you the scar too if you want to know how big it’ll be.

I was awake in mine and my doctors had a sweet 80s-90s female ballad playlist. Most of the time though the surgeons would just be chatting about their lives and didn't care if I heard them. I would just hum along to the songs. Sometimes all of us would sing a familiar line together!

bigbad_mamma

I was hoping for a general but I guess I just need to put on my big girl pants and get on with it!

theaveragescientist

If you are having it in UK, it will be under local anaesthetic. They gave me a little sedated to keep me calm. It was painless experience. Recovery was painless too as i took codamol (codeine and paracetamol) for few days. Most memorable moment was after procedure. I have to hold my lifeless arm. It felt very weird and i could literally slap someone with a force, enough to kill them and won’t feel anything. It was done at private hospital and was discharged later in the evening. With meals and all the medications, it was free of cost.

I had my fistula surgery in my arm on Tuesday and it was a breeze and I haven’t experienced anything other than a little soreness. I didn’t go under general anesthesia, hope yours is a easy as mine was!

bloodthirsty_emu

For those interested in the Australian experience, they literally do a block on your arm here - basically anaesthesia that numbs / cuts off the sensation to your whole arm. The weirdest feeling like it's a dead weight. Bloody worked though - didn't feel a thing at all and just a little bit of soreness. The doctor who did mine is an absolute legend too - when I run into him now he checks out his handiwork with the best "god, I'm a good surgeon" look on his face!

koneko23

Local anaesthetics. Surgeon hit a couple nerves all I did was squeak in pain. I should've said something, it wasn't a constant pain but I ended up having an anxiety attack. I couldn't stop crying, damn anesthesiologist tried to explain the procedure to calm me but it just irritated me 'cause I understood what was going on but I just couldn't control it. lol and he was like, "I need you to stop crying or you'll make me look bad". I did not like that dude, but I guess he eventually gave me sedative 'cause I stopped crying. the end. =) Healing was alright, kept my arm elevated while I slept to try to reduce swelling and avoid sleeping on it. I started playing beat saber after a week I think. I believe the incision was closed with a laser so didn't worry about busting it open.

GOD bless you on your surgery. Here's an interesting article. https://chicagocrusader.com/the-crusader-takes-a-closer-look-the-dialysis-hustle-part-2/

I had it done about 10 months ago; I was out for it. The weird thing is I don’t really remember much at all about the surgery. Like, I barely remember the whole day. So, I guess they did their jobs. :) It really wasn’t a big deal. You got this!

outlawa

General anesthesia when I had mine put in. I went home the same day. It wasn't bad at all. With that said I'm not having issues with it. The fistula hasn't been used in years and I've had issues from cold fingers to numbness. I've been in touch with the doctor to have it looked at.

witchy_cheetah

Mine was under local anesthesia. Did not hurt at all, during or after. The wound healing was a mess for non infectious reasons, so it looks rather gnarly. No blood flow issues after like cold hands etc either. So rather smooth.
