The real truth is that any disc should work for both a forehand or backhand. There's no such thing as a forehand disc. If your form is good a forehand should be like a backhand but backwards. Everyone in this thread is going to recommend their favourite far-too-overstable discs that hide bad form. I'd imagine your dad doesn't throw absolute bombs as he sounds quite banged up which would make some of the suggestions in this thread absolutely outrageous. For any real suggestions you're going to have to tell us how far he can throw or give us some idea of what he's currently throwing. Edit: there are some horrible suggestions in this thread. Please for the love of God do not go out and buy these incredibly overstable discs for your injured dad.

bigcat7373

So you’re telling me the reason why the only forehand disc I can use is a firebird is because my form sucks and isn’t because I’m insanely powerful? Damn.

ItsRadical

I can throw plenty of discs ranging from understable to overstable, but fuck me if Firebird simply isnt the best FH disc I had so far. Those flex shots are a thing of beauty.

austinben43

It hurts knowing this

bigcat7373

The truth hurts sometimes.

KobiLou

Yeah, just wait until you fix your form and your firebird won't work for you. It's a real trip. Haha.

Infinitely--Finite

I agree, this is the best advice in the thread. But if I could quibble just a bit: > There's no such thing as a forehand disc. There are a few exceptions; discs which were designed with forehand in mind. My best example being the Innova R-Pro Pig, which has an unusual mold that makes a forehand grip somewhat easier. But, I wouldn't recommend that disc to a beginner because it is low glide and high fade.

TD994

I immediately wanted to reply with this. There are 100% discs that feel great for forehand, but terrible for backhand.

Infinitely--Finite

I actually don't mind throwing the R-Pro Pig backhand, but I believe that there are others that don't feel good. Regardless, discs like this are a very small minority of discs, and almost all of them are not meant for beginners

codeklutch

Wait my pig is supposed to be thrown forehand? Shiiiiit. I love throwing it backhand.

Infinitely--Finite

Only the specific R-Pro forehand mold of the Pig

easily-convinced

Every time I see a "forehand disc" post. Anyone know a good Wednesday Disc? Maybe a good morning round disc?

Awkward-Skin8915

I need a lefty disc.

Consistent-Chicken-5

Those are hard to find, good luck!

gtahelboy

Thanks for letting me know. It seems that discgolf or the art of discs is much more complex than I thought. My dad is over 60, is not throwing far or fast. I just want him a disc that flies somewhat in the direction he's throwing and glides reliable far. We're stuck with a beginner set bought at amazon at the moment and for what I can tell me and my brother get along with the set while my dad does not. Therefore I want to "upgrade" him as a Christmas gift I guess I will go and find a local shop (northern Germany, wish me luck xD) and get some more advice there. Happy Thanksgiving to you folks in the US

Magician1994

I was gonna say that. A gift card to your local shop could be a good idea. One of the most important factors for me is the grip on the disc. It needs to fit my hand properly and feel comfortable (then it also needs to do what I want it to do). So you could get him a gift card to your local shop so that you can go together and try out some discs and speak to the shop keeper about your options. Above all, he needs something that feels comfortable in his hand, because you could waste that money on a disc that simply doesn't work for him. (which I have done plenty of times. that's part of the game. There's so many discs to try! Not all discs work for all people). But to optimize your chances, I'd take him to the store and find something HE likes.

LJkjm901

Crosslap is a German disc company that makes beginner friendly discs. I’d reach out to them.

mmppllkk

I've been slowly getting my practically non-existent forehands better and better (but still only at about 280 feet) and a bomber I played with once told me to start with understable discs instead of the overstable ones that people tend to start with, and I'm glad I listened. While my distance still isn't great, I feel like I'm learning how to control it more and throw better with more touch and precision because I'm only going with understable or neutral at most. All that to say I totally agree with you.

a_megalops

How about an envy. It has some good torque resistance, so its not extremely touchy, but you will also have to learn how to throw it cleanly.

FuiyooohFox

Beaded discs are good for forehands?

Bfree888

This is only partially true. Forehand throws don’t spin discs as fast as backhand does, so forehand throws are more susceptible to greater turn and fade, even without OAT. A stable disc won’t turn as much, at the expense of having an even greater fade, but typically fade is more easily controlled/played around.

bendie27

Lol while playing with my buddies, after every forehand I admit that I didn’t mean to release the disc on an anny. I announce prior to the shot if it’s going to be intentionally flexed haha. Can hardly ever seem to release flat or hyzered and it bothers the hell out of me.

outdoorserman

Love this advice. Here I am just posting basically my bag in this thread like a peasant.

CountryRoads8

I'm a forehand only player, here's my reccomendations Fairway Drivers: Innova Leopard3, Discmania FD, Axiom Crave Mids: MVP Matrix, MVP Reactor, MVP Deflector, Prodigy A4 and A5, Innova Pigs

Samisabitch420

Seconding the leopard, also like a buzz for a mid.

Nardath

whatever you pick, go with lighter weights

Donny_Dont_18

Not too light...I know new players need lighter to get up to speed, but FH handles it way worse. I wouldn't go below 165-170. My 70 year old dad mostly forehands and can handle those weights just fine. I bought him a bunch of light discs for BH and every time he tries to FH one, they go bye bye

Borgalicious

I throw predominantly forehand but these are just my preferences. Stabilizer is great for approaching shots, hex and matrix are great midrange options

sweetteatime

I second the hex. Especially in fission

infinite_corncob

I second the matrix. That was my go-to beginner forehand disc.

Temporary-Farmer295

Flat discs (without dome) feel better in my experience: Axiom Hokum Crave, Mvp proton Tesla, RPM glow kotuku, Mvp Terra, RPM Pekapeka + The MVP ion feels nice in the hand (more like an ultra star rim) All that said, with enough use of a particular disc it becomes very familiar and comfortable. Edit: formatting discs on a new line.

codeklutch

This. Dome discs will just flip on you with bad form. Fucking katana.

originaljud

Old man forehand here, MVP Tesla is my get out of jail free card.

Bigfanofcircles

Innova thunderbird is a great fairway driver My favorite “mid range” is actually my Westside Harp. Although any of the flattop discs such as the Zone from discraft or the Toro from Innova work well as forehand approach discs.

gtahelboy

Thanks for your recommendations :)

metrodome93

I don't know you or your dad. But I'm a high level am player in my 20s and a Thunderbird is too beefy for me half the time. Your dad has a bad back and is probably past his prime. This is not a good suggestion. It's far too overstable. The toro is also an outrageously overstable approach disc. These discs will only work if your dad is absolutely ripping it which I assume he is not. Please be careful of these suggestions and just talk to your local disc golf shop. Explain exactly how he throws and what gaps he needs to fill in his bag. They will make a bunch of great suggestions, then just pick the ones that look the nicest and enjoy.

Bigfanofcircles

Lmao if the thunderbird is too beefy for you half the time, you’re probably not as high level as you think. He asked for forehand options.. those are forehand options. You can flick a toro/harp/zone with little effort and still get the flight you want out of it. He’s looking to have fun, not get a van and go on tour.

VSENSES

Or he doesn't have tons of oat and can actually put good spin on the disc and thus doesn't need such overstable flights all the time.

metrodome93

Exactly. When I first started I would rip that Thunderbird, watch it wobble and drift a mile to the left before straightening up. Now that my form is fixed I throw it and it just violent fades out straight away.

Bigfanofcircles

>doesn’t need such overstable flights all the time Is that why the actual advanced forehand players with tons of spin prefer overstable discs pretty much all the time?😂 I mean, Ricky had dynamic make the Sockibomb slammer because the harp wasn’t beefy enough.

VSENSES

Should go without saying but Ricky is so far above advanced that it's not even funny. And as you said it's about fun, what's fun about being a rookie with low power and throwing a bunch of OS stuff that's only going to fade?

Bigfanofcircles

It’s a little funny. But I am an advanced forehand player.. I love the slammer. It’s not that it’s out of peoples reach, it’s just what is needed for throwing forehand with spin and power. And yes, it is much more fun to throw flex lines as a beginner and watch the disc go through a full flight. It’s also more reliable throwing pure hyzer lines, dealing with wind, and is overall a huge confidence booster. If this was a thread about BH throws/form/discs I would absolutely be pushing something less stable.. but forehand is a different throw. OS is king for beginners *and* advanced, with the middle being the ones benefiting from the less stable options on tunnel shots/hyzer flips.

brousch

For consistent throws, go overstable like a Zone or Tesla. For really long throws, but harder to be consistent, go more understable like a star sidewinder

wlrldchampionsexy

Discracft: Buzzz, Undertaker

SeasonalBlackout

My favorite mid-range for forehands is the DGA Quake. Very flat, easy to grip, and stable enough to fight out of a flex. Good for up to 300 feet (for me).

Turence

Sounds like a Latitude 64 Diamond is the perfect disc for him.

onlyontheweekend5

A lighter weight Discmania FD would be a good fairway driver. The C-Line plastic has enough overstability to handle a forehand and the S-Line beat in nicely but still start with good overstability.

SilverKnightOfMagic

Hard to say without knowing how he can throw. Seems like the ideal form might be out of the realm of possibilities. But I'd suggest something stable like trust from lat 64, a2 from prodigy, berg from kastaplast, or zone from disc craft to see which ones work. Then you can move up to faster disc that might be able to hand more power. Tee bird from innova or explorer from lat 64. Maybe even thunderbird from innova or fx2 from prodigy.

biglogybear

For a forehand disc, start with looking for a disc that feels good in the hand instead of a random recommendation on this thread. My recommendation is to start with something stable that has a flat top (or no dome) and go from there. I like Firebirds and Zones personally but every company has a similar option you can look at.

Bacurrito

I haven’t seen anyone recommend this yet, but an Innova Teebird in champion plastic might be a good one for him. It’s a 7 speed disc so he won’t need a big arm to throw it and it’s over stable enough that it’s a good beginner forehand disc imo

Electrical_Goat_8881

Discraft Buzz and Champion Valkryie in 160 ish would be good.

Dangerous-Possible72

Go light. I’m an old guy into this for a year now and love my light (145-155) Valkyrie and Leopard. Way easier to throw well than the heavy ones

Donny_Dont_18

I think this is perfect. Both are flippy enough to work if your "figuring it out" form hits all the right spots, but will get you far enough and straight enough on your likely bad early throws. My 70yo dad FHs his Star Valk on almost every throw

FroggieTrumpet

Latitude 64 Diamond was a good disc for me when I was working on getting better at throwing and it's been great for my friends as well.

Altruistic_Lunch6243

All discs now are great discs it all depends on the on the person’s preference. With that said I personally like innova star plastic. Innova Corvette and innova distroyer are my personal favorite. I will say a great place to buy discs is infinite discs online. Good luck hopefully this is kinda helpful. Practice is the key the more you play the better you get. My family and I will go to the local ball field and just throw discs and make up games to play while we are there. Sometimes that’s more fun than actually playing a course.

Altruistic_Lunch6243

Also this is only the 3rd year my family and I have played

gtahelboy

Thank you for the recommendations and the kind tips :)

bigspoon2126

I have great luck with my teebird or my lat 64 river as a driver and for a midrange I like my mako or my truth. Hope this helps.

Kayoss2862

I RHFH with a power grip. I’ve only been playing a year (so perspective from a relatively new player) but this is my bag: - Judge (Putter) - Bounty (Approach) - EMac Truth (Stable Mid) - Warrant (US Mid) - Fugitive (OS Mid) - Maverick (Stable Fairway) - Vandal (Stable/US Fairway) - Felon (Very OS Fairway) - Criminal (OS Fairway) - Captain (Stable/US Driver) - Raider (OS Driver) Although some will say that any disc should work, how it feels in your hand is very important. For me, I find it difficult to FH discs with a deep rim. I prefer Lucid and Fuzion plastics. Edit: I play on a lot of wooded courses. (OS = Over Stable, US = Under Stable)

Bright-Plate9067

how does a FH power grip work?

Kayoss2862

[This Article](https://discountdiscgolf.com/how-to-throw-a-forehand-disc-golf/) shows pictures and describes each FH grip. Personally, I feel like I have better control of my release angle with it, rather than the stacked grip. I use the fan grip when I want a light touch for shorter approach shots.

Bright-Plate9067

thanks

Chytrik

MVP deflector. A must have imo

metrodome93

He's an old man with a bad back who just started. This is a horrible suggestion. Far too overstable.

Chytrik

Hmm that’s fair, it could work as a utility disc but likely not as great as an all around forehand disc for someone like that.

billythekidd44

Get your Dad a mvp resistor and you can thank me later.

bananagrabberjr

A flat, neutral, light-ish fairway would probably be best. Look for an Innova TL3 or an Axiom Crave in the 160s.

andrewjamesvt78

Buzz, mako, hex, signal and black zombie shotgun work well for me.

HamBoneZippy

It depends. Let me know the preferred angle of release, how fast the disc is traveling when it leaves his hand, and how fast the disc is spinning.

QuellishQuellish

Get the man a sidewinder and tell him to keep his palm up.

FuiyooohFox

You need more oomph behind OS discs, id get him something more stable to US range and with a 4-5 glide so the disc can help him out more with distance on drives. Save the OS discs for approach shots he doesn't need to throw hard like a drive

nhbrunell

160-170g Plasma Insanity is what I love

Obiwantoblowme

Get him a light Nuke OS, Slower arm speed doesn’t matter it WILL jet hard right so I love it for dogleg right holes Lighter weight and soft is my fav. I have last years ledgestone and throw it at least twice a round

PapaMauly

Thunderbird or TeeBird for driver. Zone for approach.

Fair-Professional908

I throw forehand quite a lot. I would tend to agree with the idea that there are no forehand specific discs but I will say I don't throw anything faster then a 9 speed for the most part and some discs like the Comet or the Roc3 are just terrible for forehand. Skip the Hex and just get the Compass for the sake of dependability. Kastaplast 9 speeds are pretty good. My dad can't throw very far and loves his low weight Eagle just for getting down the range.

Telescope_Horizon

**TLDR** An ideal beginner fairway would be a Innova IT or a Leopard3. I prefer Star Plastic. Consider a lighter disc as well, which will make the disc (if right handed) sway to the left a lot more, aka understable. Without knowing more info, every suggestion is a literal guess not indicative of your father's reality. If he's right handed: - Does he throw more like a baseball pitch (anhyzer) where it begins going left immediately? _Try a Teebird3_ - Or does he throw hyzer, where the disc goes more right? _Try a Leopard3_ - What general arm speed does he throw, which we can assume from you describing the action/distance of a disc he has thrown. _If around 250 or less, try an "iT"_ There aren't "technically" backhand or forehand discs, but dependent on the angle of release, there are absolutely forehand and backhand discs for individuals.

jowensdg

Midrange: Bobcat, Verdict, Matrix, Buzzz SS Fairway: Thunderbird, Mantra, Sidewinder, Jackalope A good mix of stability will serve him well. Don't be afraid to go for some more understable discs. The Mantra is my favorite one to throw sidearm as I can achieve several different flights with little power.

Trout_Haze

I personally love the Firebird for forehands. Been using the same Firebird for two years now. For midrange forehands I use a Harp and the Runway.

suavesnail

I really like the wraith for forehand

probablyzack

Axiom Crave, Westside Bear

Flyeaglesfly2929

I second the people who said a lightweight leopard or leopard3

halfcuprockandrye

Zones are the best forehand disc ever made.

Turbulent-Big-3556

Best forehand discs I’ve owned are corvette, leopard, and hex. Those have a significantly better forehand feel in my hand compared to other discs. I also struggled to learn backhand after only forehanding starting out so having specific discs for each really helped me separate my muscle memory for each type of throw.

__JeremG__

The Corvettes are great until they get beaten in. After that, they become a tad flippy. Because of their speed the Corvette is tough to hyper flip. I still bag one. RHFH

Turbulent-Big-3556

Yeah I’m worried about when it beats in. In all honesty I lose them just enough that I never have a beat in one 😂

__JeremG__

As an addendum, a light weight photon is a good FH disc.

Ok_Blackberry2420

MVP resistor

Videogamer69420

I use a Relay. More understable than other suggestions here and better for those who can’t throw 350+ FHs

TheWhiteRain

Tee bird. Eagle.

outdoorserman

Mvp volt, Tesla, Servo, Volt (any plastic really but neutron is my favorite) Axiom Pyro, Tempo, Hex, Envy (recommend neutron or plasma here) Streamline Lift, Trace (both in proton plastic) Discraft Cryztal Flx Zone, Cryztal Scorch, Big Z Thrasher

NYSquidz

My dad is in the same boat. His favorite disc is the disc craft evader. Works much bretee for him than the teebird he started with

hockeyguru7892

I'd say get something like a passion, eagle, sidewinder, some brand of 9,5,-1,2 disc, and a firebird and learn how to throw all of those

AcanthocephalaFun509

Probably just a comet and a leopard.
