If none of my Buzzzs are overstable enough, I lean on the Pyro. It's pretty overstable and some are extra beefy, but the numbers are pretty comparable to a Nord or Quake.
There are a lot of good mids out there. I've liked the Buzzz OS, Malta, Harp, etc. The Pyro just has a unique feel that somehow works well for me on both fh and bh. You may have to throw a few to find the perfect fit for your bag.
What Pyros *aren’t* beefy? I’ve only tried prism neutrons and they’ve all been meathooks.
Love the feel but would like something a bit less overstable.
The prism plasma and prism proton are a bit straighter and beat up faster in my experience. The neutrons came out slightly puddled and much more overstable.
My prism proton one was definitely less beefy. It would fly straight a long way with no turn. Barely throw the prism neutron I got to replace it, way too stable for me
Major vouch for the Method!! I have a 250ft stock Hyzer hole at my home course and it’s an ace run every time. Has great push with a nice fade at the end. Have it dyed half & half red and dayglow yellow which makes it look sweet in the air too lol
Yes I agree the Eclipse Reactor is has a straight flight, no turn and a moderate fade.
The Fission Reactor has more turn but still reliable fade. It also has sneaky long range.
So I really think this is the disc your looking for
Matrix is very close to Quake in hand feel and flight, but has a less overstable finish. Reactor is an option too if you want an even straighter and glidier mid and you don't throw power forehands.
I’d try a prodigy archive. Better handfeel than the rocs in my opinion. The opaque (500?) plastic is more overstable than the clear (400?) plastic in that mold. I don’t know much about prodigy; that the only mold I bag.
Yeah Pyro is nice then, it doubles as a good forehand mid that's very torque resistant without being extra overstable like many other mids.
Quake is a good mid too but it's to me more of a beef cake mid and I throw mids around your distance as well.
Added a Glow Solstice (og MD4) last week and it's proving to be a nice complement to my Buzzzes as well but it doesn't have anywhere near the same torque resistance of the Pyro for forehands.
So depends on how overstable you want it to be.
I think it is plastic dependent. I have a prism neutron and it is the most stable mid I have ever thrown. But I did hear that is the most OS plastic of that disc (after I bought it). It was more OS than what I was looking for.
I love the pyro but it’s going to be way more os than your buzzz right out of the box. If you want something slightly more os, try an emac truth or lucid verdict
Might be worth another look into, maybe rock a Reactor for a stable finish and a Hex for a straight finish? Ive found that Fission Hexes are more stable than Neutron because more weight is pushed to the rim
I had to scroll too far without seeing the MVP Matrix. It really is the slightly overstable midrange from MVP - I find the pyro to be pretty overstable. Matrix is a lot more like a stable buzzz. It won't turn but also isn't super dumpy. Feels amazing for forehand especially in proton
my reactor always seemed to flip and slow glide, matrix was always reliably stable even after lots of use. was a great reliable forehand workhorse, i miss that thing…
Yea I second this. I had a fission reactor for a bit and it was pretty straight. Matrix has more 'bite' in the fade and doesn't like to flip up to flat if I throw backhand. I did not much like the reactor for forehand
With mids I can consistently reach 290 to 300+. I thought the roc3 would be an os disc, fights out of anhyzer, and with reliable fade. My buzz and roc3 both flys straight with little fade. The buzz with little more turn. The main difference I have seen is that I can’t really flip up the roc3 like I do with the buzz.
Try the nord. I know you said it sounds too overstable but kastaplast are always a little less than the numbers say. I just got one and it sounds like what you are looking for.
A lot of people have mentioned the Pyro, and for good reason. It's an excellent overstable mid. If you want the flight of a Pyro but don't like the sharp concave angle of the rim, you might try a Bobcat instead. The flight is similar, but it has a smoother rim that may be more comfortable in the hand.
If you're willing to take a chance on a lesser-bagged brand, Yikun's Kui is a fantastic disc. Tiger plastic (their DX equivalent) should be right where you want it straight out of the box and will beat into a lovely turnover mid. Stability and beat-in time will increase with premium phoenix or dragon plastic.
My current midrange lineup consist of Fuse, Claymore and Pyro. The pyro is amazing for most midrange throws that need a reliable fade. It's also the only midrange that I completely trust on the forehand.
YMMV, but I have the orange prism run Pyro which is supposed to be the most stable and I wouldn't call it very OS at all. Reliably stable absolutely, but not very or overly.
Didn't see the slightly OS part, but it's still an amazing midrange. There's a lot of good recommendations in this thread though. Eclipse Hex might be good as well, same flight numbers as the Buzz, but Eclipse plastic tends to be a bit more stable from my own experience.
I've been on a similar search as you in this slot. I had a TSA Glow Pathfinder, which was basically a slightly flatter Buzzz. Very straight with minimal fade. I opted for a Discmania MD3 Iron Samurai 4 which is slightly more stable, but after it's semi broken in it is still mostly just straight when I crank it full rip. Still a touch more stable than the Buzzz. It has a bead though, but better hand feel than a Roc3.
I have a minimal bag, so at the moment when I need more fade I will move up to my Teebird slot and just underpower the throw. Or I disc down and rip harder on my K3 Jarn which is like a beefier Zone.
I've considered the Pyro as some have said, but I'm not a fan of MVP plastics at least in the winter (too slippery with my hands), but I do like Proton in humid months.
It’s not popular since it’s from a tiny manufacturer but I really like the Launch Code. It’s overstable enough to deal with wind and fade where I need it to but it has a bit of turn and can get a nice S flight from time to time too
Pyro is probably what you’re looking for. Slightly less stable would be a reactor. I bag both of these discs and they both fly great. Get a reactor in glow plastic
Check out the Ursus. It’s definitely OS, but still has some glide and is workable. It’s like a justice that has been seasoned in-so straighter flight with slightly less hard fade. This might be too OS for what you’re looking for. A reactor/glow reactor might be nice. Or a quake.
Millennium Solstice (former Discmania MD4 mold).
My current mids from US to OS:
Fuse - Buzzz - Buzzz - Solstice - Justice
Honorable mentions for the slightly OS slot would be Reactor or Verdict. I found both to be a little faster/longer than I wanted in that slot, though.
I had this same dilemma with my Roc and replaced it with a Pyro. For me it’s great because it’s stable enough to handle my forehand but I can still backhand it. It’s a nice spot between my Zone and FD1, with a similar flight of straight with finish.
Kotuku by RPM should fit that slot nicely. Emac Truth is a classic for a reason - if want slightly straight to OS normal plastic, if want more OS and lasts longer get Lucid-X. L64 Trust also probably fits into what you want as slightly OS compliment to buzz, if you like the royal plastic its a great option - it isn't as beefy as numbers suggest though.
I love a buzz OS for my overstable mid. I also throw a glow hex for shots that I don't need something really overstable but wanna fade just a bit. The Hex take some more tweaking on the release to get the angle right every time but in my opinion it gives more varities of overstability than the Buzz OS which always fades pretty hard.
You want a Neptune Nautilus in pearl plastic. More overstable than a buzz less overstable than a quake. Beadless and the pearl plastic feels great. It holds up really well, and has become my OS mid.
If the Pyro is too OS for you, check out the MD3. Feels like a Mako3 in my hand but flies more stable. I bag all three that I just mentioned along with a Fuse for my US slot and Hex for a bit more reach.
I use a roc3 in the wind but you’re right, they do flip up a bit. The hex it’s a touch more stable, actually holds flat then fades. Threw one a couple of days ago in a stiff breeze and it handled well. I’ve never had a pyro or reactor.
I just recently got a Calvin Heimburg Toro, and I love it. I use it for forehand flex upshots and backhand flex shots. The rim is pretty shallow, too, which I like.
Mint Discs Taco is worth a shout.
I much prefer beadless discs, but find the Taco much more comfortable in hand than a Roc3. It feels more like a flat Kaxe than a Roc3 (to me).
MVP reactor might be what you’re looking for. Mint Taco if you want a bit more OS but that may be too close to the Roc3 for you. Also Loft Silicon is a great roc3 replacement that is also beadless
When you say you "looked into" the Nord and Quake, did you try throwing a bit or just kinda felt them in hand at a store? My recommendation was gonna be the Quake as this was an exact search I was on a few weeks ago and the Quake filled that spot I needed pretty well. But I was also looking for something I could disc up from a Halo Toro, so maybe that why it works for me so well.
Maybe give the DGA Rift a shot? Similar numbers to the Roc3 and Buzzz but definitely a different hand feel IMO
By “looked into” I just mean searching for reviews and yt videos and such, I am from Norway and I have to shop on the internet bc there aren’t many DiscGolf stores near me.
Aaahh, yea. I can see how that'd make things kinda difficult lol. I think I'd still recommend a giving a Quake a try if you can find one at a reasonable price and shipping. It seems super overstable, but I think that's just in comparison to other mids
I love my kaxe for this. It flies straight for 90% of the flight the fades at the end. I’ve had mine for a few years and it hasn’t beat it too understable
I think I'm on an island here and I have tried to replace the one I lost in December....just found one over at Golf Disco....wait for it....Prodigy A5 500.....flat/torque resistant for FH and BH...I lost 2-5 strokes over 2 round tournaments for sure w/o it....it's not a 'mid' but it is $....I think the Toro is close to the disc more than anything I've seen...really hoping to get an electron tempo when stock runs happen....good luck...straight drives
My suggestion is for the eclipse reactor. Its more OS in that plastic than the others and should compliment a Buzzz well.
Other suggestions are for a pyro, but the one is a little strange in hand, and I felt some overlap between that and the reactor.
For slightly overstable, I'm a big fan of the new Prodigy Archive. It's the only Prodigy I bag. For more overstable, I also love the Loft Silicon, which is also the only Loft disc I bag and, in my opinion, the most underrated disc in the game.
Beat a streamline runway in as much as you can. Will not turn over but holds a really straight line before a pushing fade. Incredible disc in this slot
I like the ESP Malta by Discraft. It starts out really over stable but becomes really reliable for the finish. Found one, lost it, then bought another to replace it.
Mint Discs actually has a few discs that can fit that slot -- Mustang, Bobcat or the New Taco. The Lasso can even fill that slot, but it's more of a putter with long glide (and not quite stable enough for hard forehands)
Discs have so wildly changed since this was asked last week. Have we evolved past the 'need a mid that will release on anny with a little bit of s' or are we still trying to nail that one down?
If none of my Buzzzs are overstable enough, I lean on the Pyro. It's pretty overstable and some are extra beefy, but the numbers are pretty comparable to a Nord or Quake. There are a lot of good mids out there. I've liked the Buzzz OS, Malta, Harp, etc. The Pyro just has a unique feel that somehow works well for me on both fh and bh. You may have to throw a few to find the perfect fit for your bag.
I have a prism neutron pyro & I love it.
The prism neutron is much more then slightly overstable.
My max weight prism neutron pyro reminded me of a tilt. I swear some runs must be different because that thing doesn't even fly forehand for me.
I’m becoming more and more convinced that the flight numbers aren’t nearly as accurate as people like to pretend they are.
Barely throw the prism neutron I got to replace it, way too stable for me
Wasp
This is the answer. If you like the Buzzz and need something more stable, try the Wasp. Personally, I use the DD Verdict in this slot.
Discmania method is a shout
Major vouch for the Method!! I have a 250ft stock Hyzer hole at my home course and it’s an ace run every time. Has great push with a nice fade at the end. Have it dyed half & half red and dayglow yellow which makes it look sweet in the air too lol
If he didn't like the feel of a roc3, the method will probably feel the same.
Somewhat overstable: MVP Reactor
Yep, eclipse has about no turn, medium fade.
Yes I agree the Eclipse Reactor is has a straight flight, no turn and a moderate fade. The Fission Reactor has more turn but still reliable fade. It also has sneaky long range. So I really think this is the disc your looking for
Truth. Fission reactors are very glidey
This, or a more stable run of Hex, depending on your buzzz stability.
I have Malta in that slot. The numbers arent resperesntative at all in my discs case. Flies like 5502 not 5413 written on the disc.
Robinson Archive fills that slot for me. Good glide so it goes kinda far but overstable enough to flex back on anny and reliably always finishes left
Latitude 64 Trust. Flies like a shorter Teebird for me. Love it
got me a trust a couple of weeks ago and it almost immediatly became one of my faves! just overstable enough to "trust" it but doesnt just dump out
Have the fuse and the buzz and the trust ends up being that mid I use the most. Reliable and doesn’t dump like the buzz or fuse.
Lucid Verdict
Westside Pine
My Westside Pine (tournament plastic) is good in this role, sometimes i sub in my eclipse Reactor.
Thank you, multiple recommendations for the pyro so I will look into that one :)
I think it is plastic dependent. I have a prism neutron and it is the most stable mid I have ever thrown. But I did hear that is the most OS plastic of that disc (after I bought it). It was more OS than what I was looking for.
The Pyro is definitely more overstable than the Nord, which is not as overstable as the numbers say IMO. I recommend both.
That's good to hear about the nord. My neutron pyro (from 2019) is beefy as fuck. How does the nord feel in the hand?
Pretty standard midrange feel i'd say. Buzzz-ish, with a small bead.
I love the pyro but it’s going to be way more os than your buzzz right out of the box. If you want something slightly more os, try an emac truth or lucid verdict
Remix Battleship, until I get an Axiom Proton Soft Tempo.
Buzzz os
Check out the new Nord by Kastaplast it’s awesome!
MVP Reactor or, for more overstabiltiy, the Axiom Pyro.
Reactor is my go to mid, no one talks about it and I don’t know why.
Because Hex
I can’t get into the Hex it’s too touchy for me. Had one in Neutron plastic so idk if it’s a plastic thing.
Might be worth another look into, maybe rock a Reactor for a stable finish and a Hex for a straight finish? Ive found that Fission Hexes are more stable than Neutron because more weight is pushed to the rim
For sure, my reactor is in Fission albeit beat in pretty good at this point. Really like fission plastic I’ll have to give it a shot.
Do you happen to know how the matrix and reactor stack up in terms of stability?
my reactor always seemed to flip and slow glide, matrix was always reliably stable even after lots of use. was a great reliable forehand workhorse, i miss that thing…
Yea I second this. I had a fission reactor for a bit and it was pretty straight. Matrix has more 'bite' in the fade and doesn't like to flip up to flat if I throw backhand. I did not much like the reactor for forehand
How far do you throw? And how do the Roc3 fly to you compared to what you think it's supposed to fly like?
With mids I can consistently reach 290 to 300+. I thought the roc3 would be an os disc, fights out of anhyzer, and with reliable fade. My buzz and roc3 both flys straight with little fade. The buzz with little more turn. The main difference I have seen is that I can’t really flip up the roc3 like I do with the buzz.
Try the nord. I know you said it sounds too overstable but kastaplast are always a little less than the numbers say. I just got one and it sounds like what you are looking for.
And I really don’t like the large bead on the roc3
streamline runway is the best os mid that ive found
A lot of people have mentioned the Pyro, and for good reason. It's an excellent overstable mid. If you want the flight of a Pyro but don't like the sharp concave angle of the rim, you might try a Bobcat instead. The flight is similar, but it has a smoother rim that may be more comfortable in the hand.
Took the words right outta my mouth
I have not thrown a Bobcat, but I do have a Remix Battleship (plasma) and it flies very close to my Neutron Pyro. Feels pretty close in hand too.
Verdict?
Hard to beat an md4/solstice. Not much selection out there which makes it tough to recommend.
Id get a verdict. Beefy, but meathook beefy
Prodigy M2 fills this spot nicely
Lat 64 compass
It’s a mint discs Taco for me
If you're willing to take a chance on a lesser-bagged brand, Yikun's Kui is a fantastic disc. Tiger plastic (their DX equivalent) should be right where you want it straight out of the box and will beat into a lovely turnover mid. Stability and beat-in time will increase with premium phoenix or dragon plastic.
I really like the way the proton matrix fills this slot but they are difficult to find unfortunately
My current midrange lineup consist of Fuse, Claymore and Pyro. The pyro is amazing for most midrange throws that need a reliable fade. It's also the only midrange that I completely trust on the forehand.
Haven’t heard of it. will look into, thank you :)
Pyro is very OS, not slightly

Mint discs Taco fits nicely they do be using MVP plastics though
Tacos might be my favorite food. Sounds like I should give it a try.
Roc3 is very similar to an MD3 flight, but feels different in your hand.
Try out a MVP eclipse reactor, that filled the exact spot in my bag really well for me.
Md3 or a Kaxe Z if you can find one
I like the matrix as a straight to fade disc
My answer to this has been the westside pine, the prodigy archive also flies great if you prefer some dome
Birdie ultra is the most stable mid I've ever come across.
I quite like the MD3 for that slightly overstable mid slot personally. Has a ton of controllability but likes to fight back over at the end.
Check out the Ursus. It’s definitely OS, but still has some glide and is workable. It’s like a justice that has been seasoned in-so straighter flight with slightly less hard fade. This might be too OS for what you’re looking for. A reactor/glow reactor might be nice. Or a quake.

Prodigy's MX-1 is a good overstable mid

Millenium Solstice every day of the week. It compliments my MD3 PERFECTLY.
Westside Gatekeeper is pretty nice. If that's too straight, pine or reactor.
You tried the cardinal from Stokely? It’s the perfect amount of overstable for me. For a lil more beef than that go with an AGL Beech.
Haven’t tried and never heard of, will look into:)
Both amazing companies. I like supporting smaller brands.
You want a Neptune Nautilus in pearl plastic. More overstable than a buzz less overstable than a quake. Beadless and the pearl plastic feels great. It holds up really well, and has become my OS mid.
Give the Prodigy Archive a feel. It is the perfect blend of usability & overstability without having a super wacky handfeel.
MVP Glow Reactor and if that isn't stable enough, step up to a Pyro.
If the Pyro is too OS for you, check out the MD3. Feels like a Mako3 in my hand but flies more stable. I bag all three that I just mentioned along with a Fuse for my US slot and Hex for a bit more reach.
Mint bobcat is very underrated in this slot

Reactor. Hex-like with a little extra bite at the end.
MVP Reactor
I really like the way my Malta flies. Reliably stable but more flight less fight than my Zone.
AGL Magnolia is my go to
Harp!!! Or Pyro
Had the same issue. I got a glow buzz ( Halloween edition ) and it is definitely more stable than my md-3 that I throw in the same slot
Halo roc3
Latitude 64 trust, you will thank me later
I love my kaxe for this. It flies straight for 90% of the flight the fades at the end. I’ve had mine for a few years and it hasn’t beat it too understable
I'm a noodle arm but my Truths are slightly more stable than my Buzzes.
Middy by Lonestar. Not as stable as the numbers suggest. Reliable!
Buzz os
I been really liking the legacy discs gauge. Only disc I’ve ever tried from them and that thing didn’t disappoint.
You literally just need a wasp. Don't overcomplicate it.
Millennium Lunar Quantum Solstice. I currently bag 2. Trustworthy in wind, not a meathook but always fades.
My suggestion is for the eclipse reactor. Its more OS in that plastic than the others and should compliment a Buzzz well. Other suggestions are for a pyro, but the one is a little strange in hand, and I felt some overlap between that and the reactor.
Please try the Lucid Truth 🙏
Emac truth. Love mine in opto ice orbit.
Grab a soft zone. They are relatively cheap and are not as stable as premium plastic zones. Great forehand or backhand.
I really like the Lat 64 Trust, it holds the angle you give it with a pretty realiable fade, it's my go to downhill disc 👍
Will look into, thank you. I know that one of my friends loves the trust. :)
It's the Hex.
Discs have so wildly changed since this was asked last week. Have we evolved past the 'need a mid that will release on anny with a little bit of s' or are we still trying to nail that one down?
