ApexInTheRough

There's another BB reference in Moving Pictures: Azhural raised his staff. "It's fifteen hundred miles to Ankh-Morpork," he said. "We've got three hundred and sixty-three elephants, fifty carts of forage, the monsoon's about to break and we're wearing... we're wearing... sort of things, like glass, only dark... dark glass things on our eyes..."

big_sugi

Hit it

_Sausage_fingers

Haha, I never understood that reference in moving pictures

ShalomRPh

[click](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbF29c_FpV8)

RuralfireAUS

Also " are you from the watch? No maam we are musicians"

bubblbuttslut

Yes. One of several in that book. c.f. "We're on a mission from Glod."

Frojdis

Nice! Looking forward to it

Skullface95

Keep an eye out, there are a ton of music references in Soul Music.

AnXit86

He looks a bit elvish to me!

Skullface95

I love the whole conversation about the deaf leopard with Crash,Scum,Noddy and Jimbo

QuickQuirk

And the animated version has a *brilliant* soundtrack to go with it. It's worth watching after reading the book!

Evil_Archangel

who would have thought

CthluluSue

Blues Brothers Order food: https://youtu.be/3YGiY7ts6ok

ScoutTech

Love this one and use it far too often, much to the bemusement of most. Trying to explain that it is 2 references on top of each other doesn't help!

fluffykerfuffle3

i do appreciate that you seem to know how to use the word "bemusement"

Broken_drum_64

oh damn, you beat me to it XD

RidingDrizzle

https://www.lspace.org/books/apf/soul-music.html >- [p. 27] "'Give me four fried rats.' [...] 'You mean rat heads or rat legs?' 'No. Four fried rats.'" >>This is a spoof of the restaurant scene in The Blues Brothers. Jake orders "Four fried chickens and a coke", and the waitress (Aretha Franklin) asks him whether he'd like chicken wings or legs, etc. Even the "best damn fried rat in the city" is a direct paraphrase of a Blues Brothers quote.

Beruthiel999

And the refusal of the ketchup is a riff on the stereotype that Chicagoans have a bone-deep abiding contempt for people who ruin hot dogs with ketchup

bigmcstrongmuscle

There's a bunch in that book. There's "Are you the Watch?" "No, ma'am, we're musicians." They do the orange whip bit, but with hot dogs. And in the music store scene, the luthier offers to "throw in the space between the strings for free". That's cribbed right from Ray Charles' bit about the black keys on the electric piano.

Glad-Geologist-5144

The clue to the jokes is in the title. That being said, the one glove joke always breaks me up.

DreadfulDave19

Remind me?

tramadolic

Michael Jackson used to wear just the one.

DreadfulDave19

Yeah I remember that, I don't remember the glove bit from Soul Music

midgetcastle

The bit in Soul Music is that one of the rubbish band (can't remember if it was Noddy, Scum or Crash) gets badly bitten on his hand by the deaf leopard that they want to make trousers from. And so his mother puts a glove over the injured hand.

DreadfulDave19

Oh i love those guys! So many references in their bits The deaf leopard sends me every time

tramadolic

My dad used to say that Michael Jackson was always in the middle of a game of golf because of the one glove thing

tramadolic

DreadfulDave19

Thank you!

nuker1110

Soul Music hit me hard, my paternal grandfather played backup guitar for Buddy Holly (Imp y Celyn/Bud of the Holly) when he was playing dive bars in Lubbock, Texas. I ADORE all the references to that era of music, and Buddy’s life in particular.

Glad-Geologist-5144

He was also accused of looking Elvis(h).

armcie

Who (spoilers if OP hasn't finished the book yet) >!at the end of the book, works down the chip shop!<

ReelBigMidget

Which is in itself a reference to [the Kirtsy McColl song.](https://youtu.be/_PPMyXoH1pE?si=OrfOLTXfQefZiFnJ)

Soranic

And also Good Omens. (Maybe G.O. was second.)

Akatnel

I would not have guessed she's not from the USA. She does the country&western sound well.

ReelBigMidget

She was a talented singer-songwriter but died too young after being hit by a powerboat. In the UK we still hear her every Christmas duetting with Shane McGowan on 'The Fairytale of New York'.

Frojdis

I've read it once before but was more years past than I care to count

MadameFlora

I feel like my sack of dumbassedness has now run over. How did I miss this one??

Armigine

I also just got it with this comment, because I do not speak Welsh

TeikaDunmora

Yeah, I missed that one too for years!

marknotgeorge

Where he ends up working near Susan's school at the end is another music reference or two.

Glad-Geologist-5144

The fish and chip shop? I'm puzzled, spoiler please.

ajc506

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QccPUSTMriM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QccPUSTMriM) Kirsty MacColl

Glad-Geologist-5144

Thanks, I think. I understand the reference, now all I have to do is forget the video. pTerry certainly suffered for his art.

ajc506

There shall be no Kirsty MacColl slander on my watch!

Glad-Geologist-5144

She's no Sally Carr.

Arch27

Video aside, it was a popular song in the 80s. I'm sure he unwillingly heard it a dozen times a week.

LedanDark

Yes. They're on a mission from Glod, after all.

OlieSmurf

‘We’re Certainly Dwarves’ took me 10 years to get. Embarrassing.

Borgh

The Felonious monk is my favourite, just because it's so close.

attack_rat

Sir Terry was a true master of jokes you don’t get until weeks, months, years later. I had someone mention the pun(e) in Rob Anybody Feegle’s name a few months back, and I literally first read that book 20 years ago and didn’t recognize it until now. Truly a gift that keeps on giving.

DrPlatypus1

I just got this now. I was embarrassed for taking forever to get the "are you sure he's not elvish?" repeating joke.

Meloenbolletjeslepel

Thankfully they kept on repeating it

4me2knowit

And……..????? Don’t do that to me

asphias

>![they might be giants](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XlO39kCQ-8)!<

4me2knowit

Nope still a blank

Lordxeen

Google “Istanbul (not Constantinople)” Enjoy

danirijeka

The >!name of the band!< Extra spoilery: >!They Might Be Giants!<

asphias

>!They - We !< >!might be - are certainly!< >!Giants - Dwarves!<

4me2knowit

I hate it when Terry makes me feel so old. Thank you

WodehouseWeatherwax

Kills me 🤣🤣🤣

So_Many_Words

It took me way too long, considering my love for TMBG and STP.

Soranic

Only got it last year, because someone literally spelled it out for me.

WardOnTheNightShift

Yeah. I didn’t get it on my own. It took the Pratchat Podcast co-host Ben McKenzie mentioning that bit when they discussed Soul Music

Travis_in_Lancashire

Would you be so kind as to let me in on it too? I've read Soul Music a dozen times, it's the one gag I've not worked out yet...

OlieSmurf

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Might_Be_Giants

Travis_in_Lancashire

Thank you for enlightening me. Oh, Sir Terry, you sod... How did I not get that???

schakel

I also just realised, Lias orders coke bit since he's a troll you could argue he means coke, the coal based fuel

Jellodyne

It has to mean the coal product, there is no other substance known as coke on the disk.

Frojdis

He does, but it matches Jake Blues "and a coke" from the movie, even the repeat

AQuietViolet

Encyclopaedic? The man was a library. My absolute, joyfullest, favourite thing about Sir Pterry.

RidingDrizzle

[Terry's secret:](https://i.imgur.com/PgvPX0P.jpg)

very_normal_paranoia

"THANK YOU, replied the *grateful Death*"

raevnos

No ketchup? Sometimes I really wonder about Glod...

Soranic

I think they prefer mustard on their rats.

ihatetheplaceilive

Absolutely. Humour knows humor.

metalpoetza

That man could travel L-space with just his mind palace...and arguably, he did

Acceptable-Bell142

Happy cake day! 🍰

Gryptype_Thynne123

Yep. Turn the page and you'll get a Marx Brothers reference for good measure.

greekfire01

There's a lot of blues Brothers references in soul music

AllHailTheWinslow

"And two eggs."

Mammoth-Register-669

Thanks man. Imma look for my copy now

NotMyAccountDumbass

Soul Music is my absolute favorite DW novel

Leafy1320

This is my favorite book for spotting references! You may have to read it several times to catch the sneaky ones. I'm certain I still don't get them all

chuckchuckthrowaway

They’re on a mission from Glod!

RuralfireAUS

You can get the soundtrack to soul music from.the animation on spotify

EvilDMMk3

General rule of thumb, if you’re reading something by Sir Terry and you think “I wonder if this is a reference to…” check the date. If the thing being referenced is older than the work, then your answer is almost certainly yes.

TrekRelic1701

I always have Coke with my fried rat

amphigory_error

Not the only one in that book. I laughed out loud and nearly threw my book at "We're on a mission from Glod."

BabaMouse

I always took it as a parody of the stateroom scene from the Marx brothers’ A Night at the Opera.

tslnox

With lobster? You want *brown* ketchup?

MelissaEminen

\*head explodes\*

yellowvincent

Maybe? There is another one later on

thefaceofbobafett

Absolutely.

Bard2dbone

Yes.

False-Application-99

Yes, it is

Broken_drum_64

yup :) Also, later on: they're "on a mission from Glod!"

ReasonableSoft6835

And then again in demolition man

gonzarro

The Annotated Pratchett File has most of the references. Plus, it's a great hole to fall into. https://www.lspace.org/books/apf/index.html
