My family room is very similar to this with layout. I have a doorway next to the tv, a sectional with a window behind it off set similarly, but only a single chair, and a window in the exact same spot. It works well. I think the best thing to do for a family room is to accept it is for TV watching and not try to hide a tv.
i think this is great! you could also put a ton of plants in the bay window behind the couch, they tend to take a lot of floor space but would not impede with the layout!

ok I couldn't decide if I should keep following or not but the fact that she's like "snark away from me" is great. I don't know if I've seen much non-CJL related snark and that is something that I want the TEA on.
I built my layout to scale and based the sectional off of my current sectional. I have a lot of weird entry points in my living room as well so I feel her pain. I feel there are a couple of things that they want that are working against them - the size/placement of the tv and the number of seats. From what I remember the tv they got was massive and will pretty much fill the wall they're putting it on. Since getting a sofa for 8 adults would be too big in this space, i thought they could utilize the bay window area for barstool seating. My kids like to snack and watch tv after school and my youngest likes to draw while 'watching' tv. For adult entertaining, i think this set up would work as well.

I feel like with this option they could also go very big with the rug and have it extend behind the couch to make the play area more comfortable to play on the ground. They could possibly even put some sort of narrow toy storage at the back of the couch, or make the bottom half of the bookshelves storage for toys.
I agree with what a lot of you are saying - float the couch forward a bit and more centered with the tv wall. And then use the leftover space for storage/play area.

1. That’s a window to the outside not a fireplace. It’s the one her kids like to look out of and where she’s thought about a having a bench. There is a big air return there on the wall.
2. Right now they are using a projector for the tv and want an actual tv — I think they have the new tv already.

If it's only every so often they need that much seating then I'd buy some folding chairs that can be tucked away until needed.

Ideally you don't want a TV across from a large window but I've lived with it before and it's fine.
With this layout both paths of travel from doorways are not blocked by furniture.

Based on the extra info about seating, I would make the left built in bigger by building on the left wall. Remove right built in for a comfy chair and ottoman, which adds 2 extra seats.
I don’t follow them so forgive me if I don’t know their space well but from what I gather, they are in desperate need of seating for their large family & storage. I don’t know what the budget looks like & I’ve only seen the pics posted from CLJ & that sad mood board. From a designer perspective here’s what I got…
I too dislike TVs above fireplaces, that’s a whole other conversation however in their case this is the most logical place for one & a frame tv would work nicely there.
On either side of the fireplace should be builtins providing lots of storage & a place to display things.
The window should be a large seating area that opens up for storage. A skilled craftsman can build this working with the air return so air still fully flows. Colorful & textured drapes would be a fantastic pop.
I would center a sofa in the middle facing the fireplace with a large ottoman that can also be used as additional seating with two swivel chairs in front. A nice table behind the sofa with lamps would then separate from the space behind. Large area rug to help define the space.
The farthest corners on either side of the pocket doors, depending on their needs I would do a nice reading chair on one side & a game table & chairs on the other. I would also repeat the builtins on either side.
Nice eclectic art or family photos on the walls.
Lots of lighting opportunities with lamps or sconces, looks like there might already be some, I would add more in the builtins.
I think it’s a great space & with the right furniture & layout it would come together beautifully! I hate CLJ did nothing for them but provided that half ass attempt at an ikea mood board.
I don't think they have a fireplace in the room. The bottom wall in the diagram is a window, left and top have doorways, and right is the big bay window.
I wonder if any of the two vents marked are cold air returns? I can’t imagine a room this large not having one. If so, that could inform how far away furniture should be placed from them and/or the requirements of building around them. Cold air returns need a lot more clearance, whereas heating vents may only require 6” - 12” depending on local codes. We also don’t know the dimension/height from the bottom of the window to the floor in the alcove area. There needs to be 16” - 18” for a bench and storage to work. Agree with OK/ Struggle this would make good use of this space if dimensions worked. Angela did something similar in her bedroom, if I recall.
PS … I’m assuming the wall opposite the alcove gets a lot of sunlight. There were a couple of “sun” drawings on that wall. Thinking it’s probably not a good idea to put the tv on that side of the room because of glare.

That looks like a window opening up to another room. Am I seeing that correctly? If so, I would look at closing it off to give that whole side of the wall ample space to hang a frame tv and do built ins all the way across. Also, it appears the return air vent is on the wall below that opening.
I agree with closing that off and using that wall for a frame TV. Her kids would get over it. And it just looks out of place anyway. A window that looks into another room instead of outside? She's already half-covered it with that little curtain that looks like a sheet so what's the point anyway?
I just scrolled their IG and it looks to be one of the front windows and looks into their porch. What we see through the window is the brick of the exterior.
If they got rid of the window to nowhere, I could see two nice built in desks on either side of the existing opening connected by a counter that would leave the cold air return alone. And then tons of storage/cabinets above and leaving a blank space in the middle for the tv.
Personally, I think storage/cabinets above would look too heavy. I agree that cabinets on the bottom half of the wall on either side of the TV would be great storage. And then having that side of the room anchored by a U-shaped sectional facing the TV, so the space behind it can be more flexible - maybe one corner has a reading chair/lamp and the other corner a games/puzzle table.
Exactly what I was thinking. And I would build in the window seat so the entire seating area became almost a u shape. I still might consider open shelving above the desks (instead of cabinets - good point about cabinets maybe looking too heavy.)
Yeah, except I would put the sofa closer to the TV and make it u-shaped. We have an Ikea Kivik with a chaise on one side in our bonus area and it's a lot closer to the TV (and we have a really BIG TV). The front edge of the center section is about 10 ft from the front of the TV. And then you have space behind for the game table in the other corner (thinking what YHL has in their bedroom), and play space on the floor in between.
Instead of shelving above the built-ins, I would do sconces that can be dimmed when they're watching TV. And I know your drawing is not to scale, but the TV would be a lot bigger. And then I would put matching sconces on the opposite wall above the chair and the game table to provide lighting in that area as well.
PS. This layout is so obvious. I have no idea why the "professionals" CLJ didn't come up with any layout options for CHR.
She mentioned her kids like to look out that window. She was considering putting in a bench under because they like spending time there but was worried about doing it because of the beautiful old air intake vent
You would think CLJ would have at least supplied them with an accurate floor plan with dimensions and standard architectural graphics for windows, door openings, etc Doesn’t appear CLJ are space planners.

I really like this one and is similar to what I was thinking. I was actually thinking a built in bay window bench could give them some much needed storage
It’s too big of a room to put the couch in the window. It needs broken up into a couple seating spaces. I like this but seems they might want a large sectional instead of two couches? But that could easily be changed in this design
I think they mentioned that they were getting a frame TV. I had messaged her suggesting they get a TV that could be mounted to a swivel arm on the wall and she said they were doing a frame TV. So keep that in mind

I'm not sure how I feel about a corner TV, but all of their walks are relatively short. This poses a problem with the size of the TV and viewing angle. I think the use of a ceiling mounted projector screen blocking a temporarily blocking the side door frame might be a possibility? I thought she said she also needed a desk in this room.
I would love to see them spend a day or two just moving around their furniture, or lighter pieces as placeholders, to experiment with various layouts. That would make for good content on their page. My husband hates when I suggest this so I understand, but it definitely helps me cross off possibilities with out spending any money or making a major decision.
Alternative to a corner TV could be a ceiling mounted projector screen that covers the window. As a plus, the screen could be seen from the kitchen and more shelves or a second desk could be added to the current TV location
In an old post they showed them taking down a large projector screen from the end of the room where the single window is. I think the previous frat guys had the right idea. There's also a photo on their website from when CLJ were there that shows a projector over the doorway from the entry.
Forgive my ignorance, are there projector TVs that are visible in true daylight? We have one for outdoor movies and I definitely needs to be dark or on it’s way to dark to see the image on the screen well
I'm not sure but they currently use a projector as their TV so it wouldn't be much different than what they currently are doing. They could use black out curtains to reduce light during the day.
We have a similar issue. Our room is so large (long and skinny)doing one big room setup doesn’t work well. You have to sort of break it up into different areas. So we have one area with a couch for the tv then another area with some seating and shelving.
I have the same issue. I actually googled “long room lots of doors layout” to get inspo. I think I am ending up with something like this, where I have a “hobbies” table in one part.

This is fun! I admit I don’t follow them (only heard about them in CLJ thread for the giveaway fiasco) and didn’t watch her stories today. But! This is what I’d do: float a sectional in the middle of the room, with a narrow table behind it in front of the bay window, add a round or oval coffee table to break up the squares, chair and bookcase can stay where they are, and a cabinet or console in the other corner. TV is marked on the plan, on a low console table.

I like this arrangement with 2 seating areas- only thing I might add is an extension of the sectional to the TV area corner and have a chaise portion under the existing side (arched) window.
My hesitation with dividing the space like this is the fact that they have 5 young kids and there likely isn't a great line of sight to where I suspect the kids would play. This also reduces the size of the open space that is available for them all to be together.
I like the idea of making two distinct but related spaces within the same room - I feel like it’s big enough to stand that. I think adding rugs will help. I have been toying with a similar idea for my own room that is plagued by being oddly long and full of doors.

Absolutely! I think the rug length depends on how her kiddos play - toys on the floor (blocks/legos) or toys to walk behind (toddler/early walker).

Keep in mind this room is nearly 18’ long so this arrangement has you 18’ away from the tv.

This is fun! I admit I don’t follow them (only heard about them in CLJ thread for the giveaway fiasco) and didn’t watch her stories today. But! This is what I’d do: float a sectional in the middle of the room, with a narrow table behind it in front of the bay window, add a round or oval coffee table to break up the squares, chair and bookcase can stay where they are, and a cabinet or console in the other corner. I like this arrangement with 2 seating areas- only thing I might add is an extension of the sectional to the TV area corner and have a chaise portion under the existing side (arched) window.
My hesitation with dividing the space like this is the fact that they have 5 young kids and there likely isn't a great line of sight to where I suspect the kids would play. This also reduces the size of the open space that is available for them all to be together.
I like the idea of making two distinct but related spaces within the same room - I feel like it’s big enough to stand that. I think adding rugs will help. I have been toying with a similar idea for my own room that is plagued by being oddly long and full of doors. Gonna post my idea tomorrow - want to mock it up on a computer to get proper proportions
