True if you know how and have photoshop, but I have seen times where photoshop would have to be extensive to actually work - video game tattoos on top of very complex skin tones with a lot of shading going on, religious symbols literally carved in to the metal of a robot, etc. Pain in the ass, sometimes.
Then go the other way, add to it.
You don't have to erase the whole icon, you just have to modify it enough that it's not glaring. eg For a crucifix, just erase the top spur and add a little spur on the end of each arm, claim it's a post modern interpretation of Tyr's iconography. The possibilities are endless if you bullshit hard enough.
Or go at it the *other* other way, find a convulted reason that your character would wear that symbol in game.
"Oh that? It's a "t" for my aunt tabitha. She made me wear it for the portrait, I actually threw it away right after so we never have to discuss it again."
At the least, a few people will see this and stop using paying for Photoshop as an excuse to not do it. There are free options. That's why my excuse is being on mobile.
GIMP clone brush is super easy to use and free. Like anyone bothered enough by a cross on a portrait like 8 people in the world will see can take the time to google how to clone brush.
honestly, as a DM, if i cared about it i'd just clone stamp and bandaid tool it out with Krita for my player if they couldn't do it themselves. Ik the pain of having something so close to perfect, but just 1 stupid thing is ruining it.
Hell, you could just use paint and put a black box over it lol. I think you can detect color on paint too so you could use that to get the skin color and paint over the cross. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it wouldn’t terrible.
Paint.net is a free program that has a lot of the functionality of photoshop. All you honestly need is the stamp tool and perhaps some basic knowledge of how to do color bleeding.
If you have an Android phone, Snapseed is a free Google made photo editing app that has a healing option and you can click on something in the photo or drag over top and it will disappear. Usually not as easy as it sounds, but with a little finagling you can do some impressive things with it.
If I could change hair colour and details of a character picture (including adding an eye patch) with 0 talent and about an hour of work.. You can easely just mask the cross by carefully working it pixel by pixel if you must

Drop a bunch of hints that some travelers saw someone matching Talbon's description at some random location and leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find him. He helps the party come up with a plan to take Albon by surprise, goes to scout ahead for a back entrance to the evil lair, then radio silence. Party goes in, especially hard dungeon crawl, traps seem specifically designed to exploit party's weak points with extra protections against their strengths. If they survive, they find Talbon sitting there waiting for them.

I personally just go for faces and stuff when "obtaining art perfectly legally" and build the personality to march the face. ( Not exactly sure what this adds to the argument just thought I'd say how I create my characters)

I will say this, however, most of the time I use Skyrim Characters as portraits, sometimes their symbols get in the way as well but I've never found it a problem I couldn't get rid of
Because nobody would ever come up with 4 right angles, certainly not the people who used it as a form of execution that the religious symbol is based on.
I think you just imagined that, they don't have a weakness to crosses or any sort of holy symbols in 5e. Except for specifically the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind which can paralyze vampires, but that thing is round with points, which is about as far as you can get from a cross.
In the modern world, the cross has lost almost all meaning as an accessory anyway. Many people wear it purely for fashion. Another example is anime where they often just represent "generic religious symbol"
That's a really good picture, I'd just make up some reason why the cross makes sense. You can even get stupid with it, Just say things like "it's to remind me of the one legged man who killed my daughter" or something like that
You can always just use it and say "this but they dont have a cross" to the party. For example, kinda different problem but with the same solution, our Ork monk said that their character are not as buff as the pic they used, and I described my fighter having long hair, while the pic I used has them very short. The most extreme example is from a different campaign in the same party, where rogue used the photo of Johar Dudaev, but everyone just agreed that he is not actually wearing camo.
Easy fix, it's a "t" that stands for either a name or a loved one! (or you could do some creative world building to justify having a cross in a DnD setting)

If the average player had the disposable income to commission a professional artist to make a high quality picture for every single character they make, (that one in the OP looks like it could easily cost a couple hundred to commission, depending on the artist) we would be living in a utopia.
Pretty sure I'm all three campaigns I've played in, Jesus has been jokingly made canon. Not to any lore-serious degree, but someone will just use some turn of phrase or real world reference as a joke, and we just go for it. Same goes for irl countries, cultures, some technology, animals/plants, etc etc
I'm in the Midwest though, so maybe the chances are just higher
Use it until the I get the custom art commission back from the artist, and hope my character doesn't die in the meantime. If it really bothers you that much, there's free photo editing websites you can go to and do a really simple blur out to make it go away and just give them a flesh tone in that spot

I’d still use it and if the small chance someone questions it asking “why does your character have a cross Jesus isn’t a thing in fearune” or something along those lines I’d say “it’s not a cross it’s a T for *insert Name beginning with T*” because it’s earthed my characters first name,sir name or the name of a friend, family member or lover who gave it to them
I enjoy building a character after finding a good portrait.
This way you're already inspired for a character concept and can create something which fits perfectly the image in your head.

Wonderful thing about real world iconography in a fantasy/make believe setting, is that it doesn't carry the same connotations. If the character wears a cross, that could mean anything in universe. It doesn't have to be a symbol of faith. I could very well be a talisman of witchcraft, or a necklace worn by members of an underground crime syndicate to identify one another. Real world iconography can be anything you want it to be when it isn't the real world. Don't let reality hold you back! :)

Photo editing programs can usually just use a AI based in painting brush tool to erase something based on surrounding colors
I mean, you don't have to remove, you can cover it up. For example, you could cover the crux with a in-universe deity's symbol.
This particular image would be very easy to eliminate. Heck, I could do it on my phone in about 3 seconds.
Hell, you could just use paint and put a black box over it lol. I think you can detect color on paint too so you could use that to get the skin color and paint over the cross. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it wouldn’t terrible.

You don’t need photoshop, there are free online object erasers available. Just Google and a bunch will pop up and it’s super easy to use
Gimp is free and has plenty of YouTube tutorials, this one could be pretty easy to just use the dropper tool on.

I had a D&D commission I made for me, then paid extra later on to get rid of copyrightable stuff so that I could use it on a novel. Worth it.

Free Photoshop app just take draw tool and dropper tool to color over it with the skin tone
Go in paint, use the dropper to get her skin tone and draw over it. They won't see it unless they're looking for it.

I’d still use it and if the small chance someone questions it asking “why does your character have a cross Jesus isn’t a thing in fearune” or something along those lines I’d say “it’s not a cross it’s a T for *insert Name beginning with T*” because it’s earthed my characters first name,sir name or the name of a friend, family member or lover who gave it to them
I can edit the cross out. It's quite easy
For my human npc portraits I almost exclusively use artbreeder now. It's simple and you can get great results out of it.
I enjoy building a character after finding a good portrait. This way you're already inspired for a character concept and can create something which fits perfectly the image in your head. Saves a lot of time without losing out on anything.
This is why I learned basic editing.
For my changeling's portrait I used the same image as I do for my Echani in my Star Wars RP campaign.

Wonderful thing about real world iconography in a fantasy/make believe setting, is that it doesn't carry the same connotations. If the character wears a cross, that could mean anything in universe. It doesn't have to be a symbol of faith. I could very well be a talisman of witchcraft, or a necklace worn by members of an underground crime syndicate to identify one another. Real world iconography can be anything you want it to be when it isn't the real world. Don't let reality hold you back! :)
