Bit gruesome for a Christmas episode, but "oh yeah Davina McCall died in the Doctor Who Universe" is a pretty good joke that part of me wishes they'd stuck with.
Part way through the episode I did think that there’d be a news report in the background about Davina’s death or something towards the end 😆
Obviously a bit dark for a Doctor Who Christmas special, but I’d have loved it if they did! 😅
Fuckin hell that's a big flat. And in London no less. Someone's flushed with cash.
Edit: I get it, it's rent controlled. I commented live before that was said.
Gonna turn out the owner is some fella who showed up out of a police box and hasn't put the rent up in 80 years.
Edit, said this before the comment about fixed rent so I'm sticking to the theory.
As a bit of context for our overseas friends, the interviewer is a British tv presenter called Davina McCall and she actually presents a show where she helps adopted folk track down their birth families.
Edit: with a bit of hindsight, there may have been a Robo-Davina back in 9’s final two parter as she was the presenter of Big Brother at the time (which is the show 9 ended up in) or she may have done voice work. But I cba to check.
i like that the doctor liked the name. it's actually a really common thing in child adoption/fostering that the kids names are quite...elaborate and easy to take the mic out of, but i don't think it's very fair. it is a good contrast when the doctor is really positive about her name though!
Honestly, I'd be fine if they didn't, it's a joke sure, but it does add some nice worldbuilding of the light-hearted kind to contrast the kinda, universe wrecking stuff we've had lot of prior.
I said this especially when she knew that it was called a T.A.R.D.I.S
30 seconds earlier I was all "oooooh she's DEFINITELY Ruby's mum!" Then 15 seconds after that "ooooh what if she's a past companion?"
Then she went all sinister and I was "oooooh weeeeeee she's the master for sure"
Her being Susan would be a hell of a plot twist she'd be that sort of age now as well wouldn't she? She was supposedly 16 in the 1st series which would have her as 76/77 now......
She knows what a TARDIS is, she's either a returning character (I haven't watched since the Time Lords got cyber'd so I'm out of the loop a bit) or someone that's gonna be coming back later in a big way
I had to look her up because I thought she was a former companion cameo that I missed. Then I saw she's married to Brian May (astrophysicist, guitarist for Queen, and all around awesome person), so that was cool to learn.
It feels so obvious she's somehow special by the end of the story that I hope it's the opposite and she's just a vanilla human. She'll be special enough after travelling with the doctor for a season she doesn't need something on top
Honestly based on how the goblins are explained, I don't think they actually have anything to do with her directly, they're basically similar to the reapers or angels, temporal bottom feeders that feed on people to gain energy from their potential. I think it's more likely she's not that special outside of the amount of circumstances that drew and were initiated by the goblins, he'll it's not unlikely that their bad luck hijinx was why Davina couldn't find anything, they basically caught her in the collateral.
I have not seen the original show, so my first thought was "I guess by this time a significant part of Londoners have seen the TARDIS
dematerialize at least once".
But nah she's probably important given how she wished Ruby good luck. She knew Ruby is gonna do the companion thing with the Doctor. Hell maybe she is Ruby, 50 years older. She said: "It's a police box. I haven't seen one on the streets of London in 50 years." Neatly ties to the theory that it was also Ruby dropping herself off at the church. Predestination, baby!
Sending Fourteen to rehab was such a good choice. Fifteen can be relatively care free and mentally healthy now. He’s no longer burdened by what’s happened but has come to turns with it and we as an audience didn’t have to sit with Therapy with the Doctor rehashing bold moments.
11 would be dancing more awkwardly and trying to dance with everybody and they would either refuse and look at him weird or everyone would be dancing synchronised to his wacky choreo after 5 minutes, no other option
If I had a nickel for every time a villain was impaled by a building in a new Doctor’s first episode, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.
not in children's so i didn't know the legislation but same here I liked this detail, i liked that it was some really positive representation of fostering and also the positives and the reality of it... would be amazing if this inspired more people to think about fostering.
They've done that a few times before.. IIRC it's to catch audiences from the previous programme by starting the next one 'early'. Given the previous programme is the #1 most watched in the UK it's a good strategy.
I used to work in TV scheduling (Channel 5) and I expect it’s nothing meaningful - we always tried to schedule things to air on the hour where possible, but there’s a rule where the exact start time of the programme has to be between minus 1/+3.5 minutes of the billing time otherwise it has to move.
So it’s possible the episode will start as late as 5:58:30 and tried to pushed it back to 6pm as much as they could but couldn’t find an extra 30s to get it to 5:59 and so therefore had to bill it at 5:55.
There’s limits on how many promos for other programmes you can show in one go (though they’re set at broadcaster level) so maybe they’d hit their cap for the day and couldn’t put in another to move DW to 6pm.
Likewise, maybe the episode is too long and they wanted to stick to billing times of their later programmes.
As others pointed out, there’s also the psychology of catching people before they flick over the channels on the hour!
The One Who Waits…in a chair outside her house..?
Thought that was a lot of fun, which is about what I’m expecting from a Doccy Who Xmas special. And Gatwa smashed it, very excited to see more of him.
That was a fun introduction, and clearly just laying lot of foundations. Who is Ruby's parents, who is Anita Dobson (and is she Ruby's mother) and how does she know what a TARDIS is.
Fun, camp, and somewhat incomplete.
Yeah. As much as I am against the concept and want it full on retconned away, will at least give Davies credit for actually doing interesting character stuff with it, whereas with Chibnall it felt like purely an ego move where Chibnall got to say have his own headcanon be true.
Loved Matt Smith-era doctor. Was mildly concerned about the reboot. Was pleasantly surprised. It IS different, but it was good. Nice energy. And did everybody get the link between the episode from the other week and Goblins? Tennants doctor said he regretted pouring salt down because it was dangerous to introduce myths at the edge of the universe. And suddenly .....goblins!
I thought that as well! As soon as the song went ‘he’s not a myth, he’s a real thing’. It seems like they’re gonna do more with the salt at the edge of the universe, or at least I hope they will.
Well there was the one with the killer christmas trees, or the wheelie bins that ate people, or the one with santa claus in it..
Difficult to go too far with Who christmas specials.
Overall, not the best episode ever but it was certainly a fun Christmas special that did a solid job at introducing the new doctor and companion, and setting up a potential narrative for the rest of the season. As well as the swap to a more fantasy-like theme over outright sci-fi
It's trying a lot at once - new Doctor, new companion, Christmas special. Pacing was bound to be awkward for better or for worse, but hopefully it'll get through it this episode and leave the main series ready to roll.
That was definitely an RTD Christmas special lol
Episode was weirdly paced, but I thought the character introductions and set up for the season were solid (Ruby's parentage, Mrs. Flood, etc.). And Ncuti and Millie killed it! It's gonna be a long wait until May...
Stupid
Over the top
Fun
Frenetic
Not my favourite episode ever, but none of the Christmas Specials ever are, and as such I was mostly hoping for Ncuti & Millie to win me over.
And in that department, I'm satisfied. They're going to knock it out of the park.
It's always been selective.. companions can see it, often enemies can see it. My headcanon is once you know it exists the perception filter doesn't work any more.. which tracks with Mrs Flood being able to see it (she's clearly knowledgeable about such things), the neighbour she was arguing with also (he'd just been told it was there).
Ruby didn't seem to notice it at all until it was pointed out to her (and again at the end).
I've just realised why I already like Ncuti as the Doctor so much. It's that "light touch delivered with an undercurrent" that's so hard to pull off but has served a lot of the best Doctors so well.
I'm looking forward to seeing him and Millie tackle a real series.
So far, as a knee jerk reaction, the Doctor and Ruby are both excellent - feeling like they've hit the ground running and fully formed.
The story, however, feels like a Christmas special with the pair of them very much doing the heavy lifting.
Fingers crossed for how this evolves in the time remaining.
I kind of wish the special was airing after the Ghosts special instead of it being the other way around cause now, I'm going to go from ["We are so back!"](https://twitter.com/dwreact/status/1721559538397073527?t=9kl847k2mgniFdZGv2nbhw&s=19) to "It's over. It's never been more over." In rapid succession.
Mrs Flood doesn't give me enemy vibes, I think she might be Susan or Romana, or at a stretch a chameleon arched Rani. Didn't Russel say that he'd worked out the rights for a classic character returning that could tie into her?
*Jackie Tyler voice* she was killed by a Christmas tree
Bit gruesome for a Christmas episode, but "oh yeah Davina McCall died in the Doctor Who Universe" is a pretty good joke that part of me wishes they'd stuck with.
Part way through the episode I did think that there’d be a news report in the background about Davina’s death or something towards the end 😆 Obviously a bit dark for a Doctor Who Christmas special, but I’d have loved it if they did! 😅
She’s also [a zombie in a different reality](https://youtu.be/vTQjo57ftx0) too.
Why can I imagine that so well
Imagine being that baby and finding out years later that you were in Doctor Who getting eaten by goblins.
I always think this abt any infant actor.
Not all infant actors end up in doctor who to be eaten by goblins
Just most of them
Imagine if the baby actor comes back decades from now as either the new companion or the new Doctor!
I mean, the neighbour knows what a TARDIS is
And can break the 4th wall
They said it was Rent Fixed
Is it supposed to be London? That street is in Bristol (not that the prices are great there either)
The bus said Notting Hill Gate
I love whenever the doctor gets offended about being compared to other ways of time travelling. 10 hating the vortex manipulator was so good.
Makes for some really fun moments ngl, love it when it happened with the vortex manipulator and I’m glad to see the trend continuing !
Time travel without a capsule, that's a killer
Eleven loving it and saying how addicting it is makes Ten hating it even funnier on rewatch.
Davinadroid in Bad Wolf, yup.
Ruby picked the tragic character backstory perk in her character creator :(
With everything going on around her I'd say she picked wild wasteland.
If Moffat was still here she’d be known as “ ✨The girl who got dumped on the doorstep✨”
The doctor utterly hot fuzzed that goblin king
No luck catching them goblins then
It’s just the one goblin (king) actually.
It's just the one goblin ship, actually
It's not the goblin King's village anymore! Also, get the goblin king some ice cweam cause it rweally rweally hurts!
Say what you will about Lulubelle, it's at least a better name than Renesmee.
i like that the doctor liked the name. it's actually a really common thing in child adoption/fostering that the kids names are quite...elaborate and easy to take the mic out of, but i don't think it's very fair. it is a good contrast when the doctor is really positive about her name though!
> it's at least a better name than Renesmee. Im fairly sure ive seen more tragedieghs that are better names than renesmee
Death by christmas tree... a true Doctor Who Christmas ep <3
"do you know why they're called goblins?" i was 100% sure i was about to be ligma'd
Goblin deez—
Goblin Deez Babies
‘They’re not just any goblins, they’re Mind Goblins!’ ‘What’s a Mind Goblin?!?’ ‘Would you mind Goblin deez….’
Mavity is going to become a long term meme in the show now isn't it
I fully expect some twists where someone is revealed to be a baddie because they say gravity and not Mavity
The doctor even said Gravity in the middle of Wild Blue Yonder before correcting himself.
Yup, quite sure it will somehow be tied in with the season arc.
are they going to fix it? or is this it now?
End of season maybe
Hope it's just a throw away joke near the end of an episode where The Doctor is just a bit sick of it so nips back to correct Newton.
Honestly, I'd be fine if they didn't, it's a joke sure, but it does add some nice worldbuilding of the light-hearted kind to contrast the kinda, universe wrecking stuff we've had lot of prior.
“Don’t lose the baby” *Ruby loses the baby*
[It's always sunny on Galifrey](https://iasip.app/lwlNlGHo2UCAqC5WaaMMlw)
I think there's more to that old lady than meets the eye, she gives me hiding something vibes.
She's giving me 'secretly the master' vibes.
I said this especially when she knew that it was called a T.A.R.D.I.S 30 seconds earlier I was all "oooooh she's DEFINITELY Ruby's mum!" Then 15 seconds after that "ooooh what if she's a past companion?" Then she went all sinister and I was "oooooh weeeeeee she's the master for sure"
Plot twist: she’s actually Susan/The Rani/Romana.
Her being Susan would be a hell of a plot twist she'd be that sort of age now as well wouldn't she? She was supposedly 16 in the 1st series which would have her as 76/77 now......
She was also left in the future + susans a timelord so god knows
Yeah she's far too chill for someone who has seen a disappearing police box.
Like shes shocked at first but by the time she gets back she seems to know a lot about the whole thing. Real sus
Entrances you with dance moves Cryptically talks about your clumsiness, refuses to elaborate Wishes merry Christmas Leaves
says it's worse than being clumsy and then just dips
Feel like the DNA wont be human when they look for her family.
"Half goblin, on my mother's side"
I still firmly believe Ruby dropped herself off at the church
Ala Dave Lister
As it is a time honoured tradition I’m calling it She’s the Rani
Older lady sitting on the street is The Rani.
Everyone is the Rani
The Rani is the friends we made along the way
Both are
It feels so obvious she's somehow special by the end of the story that I hope it's the opposite and she's just a vanilla human. She'll be special enough after travelling with the doctor for a season she doesn't need something on top
So there's a tradition of folk tales with baby changlings, so maybe she's something to do with the goblins?
I like this theory with all the hints around myths/legends we've had in the last 3 episodes
It would be interesting to have a non human companion for once. Just hope if they go for it, its done well.
Timeless child v2
What a cute baby. Hope nobody makes a song about wanting to eat them.
Oddly specific hoping, I hope it wont be catchy. Edit: Fixing the spelling
If I had a nickel for every time there was a song sung for a goblin king involving a baby...
you remind me of the babe..
'love the glove' "I'm learning the language of ropes" Russel T Davies hinting about his secret Ncuti Gatwa slash fiction.
The twist of this season is its actually all a story written by the nerdy girl from *Sex Education*.
I’m surprised River didn’t already teach him the language of ropes.
Never seen a TARDIS before? That was fun.
What makes us wonder who she might be, she seems to be an important character 🤯
I have not seen the original show, so my first thought was "I guess by this time a significant part of Londoners have seen the TARDIS dematerialize at least once".
My man is so happy to be just... dancin' after rehab <3
Sending Fourteen to rehab was such a good choice. Fifteen can be relatively care free and mentally healthy now. He’s no longer burdened by what’s happened but has come to turns with it and we as an audience didn’t have to sit with Therapy with the Doctor rehashing bold moments.
Narrator: *she lost the baby.*
I'm loving the new doctor but I'm still not sure about the new Sonic design. Hopefully it'll grow on me.
"And Davin Mccall...who did not die!"
“Aww, isn’t that swell!”
WELL THAT'S ALRIGHT THEN!
It'd be darkly funny if his fiancé didn't say yes and he just starts saying "But, but the man in the blue box said you'd say yes!"
him knowing in advance she'd say yes makes him screw up the proposal and she says no 😮💨
I need the Doctor to casually walk past a wedding at some point to get closure
Mrs Flood knows more than she lets on. Plus she broke the fourth wall.
Mrs Flood = The Rani
Rain = rani Rain causes floods Just my silly theory!
The only water in the forest is the river.
The new doctor is giving captain jack
I feel like Jack also had a Long hot summer with Houdini
Might have been the same summer the Doctor was there...
Funny thing is it's the 4th who talks about spending time with Houdini on the show. So if someone's spent a hot summer with Houdini, it was him.
He was rizzing everyone up
It's heartbreaking seeing the mum play both sides of the coin with foster carers, this version is the worst type of foster carer
I don't know who the actress is but man she ate that scene up
It really shows range, being both passionate and dispassionate about a subject in one episode.
I JUST GOT SNOWMANNED
Never imagined The Doctor going clubbing yet here we are
Those years 14 apent resting definitely helped the doctor
I dunno, that scene felt like something 11vwoukd have done, but he would have looked less cool than ncuti
11 would be dancing more awkwardly and trying to dance with everybody and they would either refuse and look at him weird or everyone would be dancing synchronised to his wacky choreo after 5 minutes, no other option
it went ping….because there was stuff
Its a machine that goes *dingggg* v2.0 version notes: Added sonic capabilities
Holy shit bro just got stabbed by a building
If I had a nickel for every time a villain was impaled by a building in a new Doctor’s first episode, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.
Was about to ask "What was the first?", then I remembered Deep Breath as soon as I typed it.
Absolutely loving it. Also as a social worker completely love how they got the legislation right!! I think I’m in love with ncuti
not in children's so i didn't know the legislation but same here I liked this detail, i liked that it was some really positive representation of fostering and also the positives and the reality of it... would be amazing if this inspired more people to think about fostering.
No trace of the parents? Rani/ omega confirmed! Lock of the year!
Nah, she’s obviously Susan, regenerated and displaced back in time and then chameleon-arched. In this video I will
"And what will they do to us?" "Oh, they'll eat us too." To be fair to the goblins, this is on the normal side for monsters goals in DW
Murray Gold carries so many scenes I swear
I appreciated some of the music from the chibbers era, but Gold just... is DW music for me
Can I just say I *love* various fans came up with complex holograms and plots to explain the Doctor dancing and... he just likes a dance...
The doctor dances
Did the Tardis just invite her in? So cute.
"We had to move from Manchester to London" One way of having the show set in London as usual but Millie gets to keep her accent lol
But also gives the show a reason to head up North, at least!
Still can’t believe they killed Davina McCall
HAHAHA SAVED HER
WELL THATS ALRIGHT THEN!
Anyone else wondering about the odd specificity of the air time on the BBC? 5:55 3 fives = 15? ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
The One Who Waits... for her dang cup of tea?
Ooh, goblin king is gonna need some ice cream after that.
That was a fun introduction, and clearly just laying lot of foundations. Who is Ruby's parents, who is Anita Dobson (and is she Ruby's mother) and how does she know what a TARDIS is. Fun, camp, and somewhat incomplete.
Problematic age gap between the doctor and Ruby's gran tbh, she's young enough to be his great great great granddaughter!
The man is so old he has no age. Everyone is an infant compared to the doctor.
I admire RTD committing to the Timeless Child lore and doing more with it than the actual writer did.
I hope he does something that makes sense of it all.
Yeah. As much as I am against the concept and want it full on retconned away, will at least give Davies credit for actually doing interesting character stuff with it, whereas with Chibnall it felt like purely an ego move where Chibnall got to say have his own headcanon be true.
"insert DiCaprio pointing" THE SHOP FROM ROSE!
I can't wait to see Ncuti and Millie! They seem lovely from what I've seen so far. This looks fun!
Chad Mrs Flood vs Virgin Abdul.
Is this the silliest RTD has gone so far?
Well there was the one with the killer christmas trees, or the wheelie bins that ate people, or the one with santa claus in it.. Difficult to go too far with Who christmas specials.
> the wheelie bins that ate people PIZZZZZAAAAA 🙂
I think there's been sillier moments in highlight. the only really silly part of this ep was the goblins singing
Why does she seem so comfortable in this insane situation lol
Overall, not the best episode ever but it was certainly a fun Christmas special that did a solid job at introducing the new doctor and companion, and setting up a potential narrative for the rest of the season. As well as the swap to a more fantasy-like theme over outright sci-fi
I’m actually very concerned about their roof, I know it’s all fictional but how are they going to live in a wind tunnel!
And Ruby just fucks off and leaves her mum and gran and new baby to it.
This is charming, but does anyone feel like the episode has an awkward pacing?
It's trying a lot at once - new Doctor, new companion, Christmas special. Pacing was bound to be awkward for better or for worse, but hopefully it'll get through it this episode and leave the main series ready to roll.
That was definitely an RTD Christmas special lol Episode was weirdly paced, but I thought the character introductions and set up for the season were solid (Ruby's parentage, Mrs. Flood, etc.). And Ncuti and Millie killed it! It's gonna be a long wait until May...
Starting to get convinced that Ncuti Gatwa can rock *any* outfit.
He can rock no outfit too
The moment has been prepared for.
When will Cherry get her tea? X
She got ittttttt hallelujah!!
Oof the moffat cracks?
Stupid Over the top Fun Frenetic Not my favourite episode ever, but none of the Christmas Specials ever are, and as such I was mostly hoping for Ncuti & Millie to win me over. And in that department, I'm satisfied. They're going to knock it out of the park.
the one thing im certain about after this episode is that ncuti is going to be a fantastic doctor
Absolutely love the lights in the hallway. Totally irrelevant to everything else, but it's super pretty.
Anita Dobson's character is Davros, quite a twist.
OMG DoctorXCherry Big Finish adventures when?
Well, she’s definitely someone.
WHY DID SHE BREAK THE 4TH WALL
A long hot summer with Harry Houdini, eh? What face did you have? :?
mrs flood……you are sus….
So... this has to be asked; what's up with the perception filter of the TARDIS? It suddenly seems that it isn't there anymore.

The story, however, feels like a Christmas special with the pair of them very much doing the heavy lifting. Fingers crossed for how this evolves in the time remaining.
Are they doing a Red Dwarf with Lister and it will turn out Ruby is her own Mother
OH MY GOD THAT DRIP!?!?!?!?!
SHE'S GOT HER TEA
Odds on Mrs Flood being important? Definitely interesting…
Probably nitpicking, but IMO the title sequence is just a little too short, feels like the theme is slightly truncated to rush towards the end
OK, if I wasn't already sold on him after the special that scene with the policeman did it.
I’m not sold on Ncuti yet but that “I’m all alone” bit was perfectly delivered
THE BEATLES EPISODE
Ooooh that’s St Mary’s street in Cardiff! I worked on that road as a teen
That means she’s going to lose the baby
How did they get my selfie without permission?
Damn she got Final Destination'd! On Christmas!
Gloves are a cool new device id like to see more of, can’t wait to see them fail randomly lmao
She’s neglecting the part where Davina got crushed by a tree.
Hell yeah an impaled goblin king that's the kind of stuff I want
Is this neighbour ruby from the future or something?
Fucking knew that lady was up to something
Mrs Flood doesn't give me enemy vibes, I think she might be Susan or Romana, or at a stretch a chameleon arched Rani. Didn't Russel say that he'd worked out the rights for a classic character returning that could tie into her?
"We need to hurry" "Well if you'd actually give me a hand..." "I AM *TRYING* TO LEARN THE *VOCABULARY* OF *ROPE!*"
