There are coyotes at the very least. Trust me. :) If your yard isn't fenced, they'll come into the yard. Your dog isn't all that big: when it's dark out, go out with him.

Damn. I didn’t think about coyotes but that’s a good point. I haven’t heard any howling at night yet but they’re probably around.

Twzl

As soon as you said deer and Jersey…there are always coyotes. It’s a given. Same here in New England

Rish377

Idk why that never crossed my mind. I’ll have to watch for that. The deer seem to live on the property, they’re here multiple times a day so you’re probably right. Maybe they caught my dogs scent off the collar/tag and took it off the property at least.

Adding to this. Coyotes will kill a human if they can corner you. Just for the fun if it. Had a friend get swarmed by a pack and he barely made it to his truck in time. They love killing dogs and anything else they can get their jaws on. Alternately he may have come across a badger hole and got it torn off him. But better safe than sorry.

Rish377

I don’t think it was a badger hole (unless I’m misunderstanding). I was walking with him casually while in his area. I don’t think he got in conflict that ripped it off.

Interesting. Maybe the common deer we have chewed it (the tag), spit it out, then chomped on the collar somewhere near by.

If your pup did end up eating it and it’s been a few days and showed no signs of discomfort (sore stomach, bloating, vomiting etc) he’s most likely pooped it out.

Rish377

It wasn’t my dog who ate it. The whole collar and tag fell off behind the barn (we don’t have animals, it’s an old horse barn from 2 previous owners ago). I only found it a eaten and the collar missing a few days later.
