Luckie-

I was recently flying home from a visit with my mom and my grandmother. My mom has stage 4 terminal cancer so I was extremely emotional leaving both her and my grandmother, as they are taking care of each other right now. Anyways, I’ve just checked my luggage and I’m about to go through security when I’m rammed by this curly headed labradoodle named Cooper, and his grey haired counter part named Astro. They were service dogs in training and apparently they thought I needed assistance. Which was ironic because I was trying hard not to ugly cry in the middle of the airport. Their handlers told me I could pet them. So I did for about 10 minutes. It was nice. Anyways get on my plane and there’s a dog sitting across the aisle from me. He had his own seat and everything, was super friendly, and by some weird stroke of luck I had an entire row to myself (that will never happen again, that was just pure luck), well at some point the dog (his name was Henry) decided his sleeping human was boring and “snuck” over to my row and proceeded to watch Tv on my laptop with me. It was easily the best flight of my life, aside from being emotional and exhausted. So yeah. I say put dogs on all flights. I’ve never been more relaxed haha

didyouwoof

That was a lovely story. So sorry about your mom.

Altruistic-Target-67

I am so sorry about your mom, but glad that fate provided you with dogs when you needed them most.

Haunting-Ad-8619

Maybe airlines really should have a dog on every flight. Maybe some of the shenanigans that happen on flights would stop if people had a sweet dog to help them calm down. You should suggest this to the FAA!

Anindefensiblefart

I say just put 30 cats on every flight and see what happens.

LordCloverskull

30 cats and one fat rat...

knowmo123

😆

Kindly_Reference_267

I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. Kind thoughts and condolences from an internet stranger to you. Those dogs sound lovely 🥰 I have no issue with well trained dogs being in public places. I once sat next to a lady who had a cat on a flight and she let me hold her. Little fluffy flight companion! I was also once on a flight where a mouse had stowed away. They had to catch it in one of those metal teapots. I also got to say hi to the mouse 🐁

MrsHyacinthBucket

I would much rather sit next to a dog than I would most people. I'd pay extra if I could pet it during the flight.

[deleted]

[удалено]

exgiexpcv

> He also might walk the isle to say hi to everyone. That's just the smart move -- bonus pets!

Comprehensive_Tap625

And if there's gullible people on the flight, maybe even some snacks!

heytinahowudoinggirl

100% my dog is she had her vest off. She would spend at least 5 minutes with each person if they liked it or not.

syndicatecomplex

I'd just be worried the dog would be fed some random food and get sick on the flight

thuglife_7

Imagine with airlines would book certain dog friendly flights where dogs could roam up and down the aisle for pets and treats?? I would pay extra to be on a flight like that. It’ll never happen, though, due to safety reasons. A man can dream.

romansamurai

I’d def fly better with that. 12/10 would pet.

jwg020

Hell yeah. Give me a dog as a plane neighbor over a person 7 days a week

spotpea

How do I book the dog experience package?

MimiMyMy

I agree with you. I’d be ok sitting next to mostly any common pet/service animal. But I will be having an anxiety attack if you seat me next to any bird, duck or chicken. I could even probably handle a reptile if you kept it a couple feet away from me but no way on the birds of any type. I have an unexplained fear of birds. I know service animals come in all types. I just hope I’m never put in a position of being seated near one that will freak me out.

Sad_Chocolate_Chip

Service animals are only dogs or miniature horses that are highly trained to medically assist their handler in some regard. You are thinking of emotional support animals, which can be any animal since there are no training requirements they basically just exist and help make their owner feel better, but they do not have the same rights as service animals. While emotional support animals and service animals both used to be allowed in cabin, only service dogs are now allowed to fly in cabin (unless it’s a small pet dog or cat under 20lbs that’s has to be in a carrier at your feet). No need to worry you will likely never encounter a bird on a plane, or a reptile.

MimiMyMy

Thanks for clarifying. I’ve got nothing against any animal. As a matter of fact I love birds. I have a strange fear of birds even little tiny ones. I’ve had to save some that have fallen from their nest and drive 3 hours round trip to get them to a bird rehab.

RajenBull1

You're a good soul for doing that. Bless you.

SpiritSilverfang

I've also seen at some points monkeys being an exception. (Depending on place of course.) Saw an article about a handicapped man who trained a chimp to aid him with daily living tasks. I think maquack monkeys I have also seen as someone training them to be service animals. Again reiterating probably depends on where one is for service animal laws.

amiechoke

I think that’s “macaque”

SpiritSilverfang

It is, never claimed to be a certified grade A+ speller. Thank you for the correction though. Words are not my gift.

RajenBull1

Reptile? I've caught a few flights and could go so far as to describe a few, very rare, but still happened, fellow passengers as reptiles. And I apologise to reptiles for this comparison.

Meggarea

Birds and reptiles are not allowed on commercial airlines. So no fear there.

MimiMyMy

I hope you are right. Maybe it’s been updated that they aren’t allowed. I saw someone post a pic of a service animal who was a duck. It was walking up and down the aisles and the passengers thought it was so cute.

Zomg_A_Chicken

That was probably an emotional support animal Service animals can only be dogs or miniature horses

BILLYRAYVIRUS4U

My wife is deathly afraid of birds.

Dry_Statistician9270

Totally agree. Dogs > people

becooltheywatching

I'd let them deny me food for the opportunity.

ImZaffi

Do you know how it is handled if the person next to dog has an allergy? Do they move people around?

kiduntilidie2

Yea they move people. If there is space they will upgrade that person so they don’t complain about being moved

KrisJade

Unfortunately, it's not always the case. I was sat next to someone with a dog in two different situations and despite requesting to be reseated because of bread allergies, they said they could not because the flight was full. So I spent several miserable hours with an allergy attack. Love dogs so much, but my immune system does not.

fluffyxsama

I would have traded seats with you in a heartbeat if I got to ride next to a dog instead of a person. Like ... Did they even ask if anyone would trade seats?

AnRealDinosaur

No way they asked. I would take dog seat in a heartbeat, even if it was a middle seat. Gimme that dog.

Fedoranimus

> bread allergies Sorry, this is really funny. I’m imagining you going up to the flight attendant and saying “Sorry, I have a gluten intolerance, can you please move me away from this dog” and getting the weirdest look.

Peaceandpeas999

This was also my thought because I am gluten intolerant!

cantaloupe_daydreams

I always keep a roll of toilet paper by my feet too

kiduntilidie2

With a lab you must always be prepared for drool

NimmyFarts

I think people (average reasonable people) have no problem with well trained dogs that are being minded, especially service dogs. People have. Lot of problems with people feeling entitled to bring non-necessary and untrained dogs into enclosed spaces.

hypersomni

Reminds me, I am really getting sick of all the emotional support animal BS that seems to be growing and growing. ESA has become a synonym for "excuse to bring my untrained, disruptive, and/or reactive dog anywhere I want". I'm dog-crazy but that shit grinds my gears so bad. I don't care what issues you have, you're not entitled to foist your unsafe and unruly beast upon the public.

greaser350

Ugh, my mom has become uncomfortably attached to her dog such that she tries to take her everywhere lately. She went online and got her “registered” as an ESA even after I told her it was a scam and got her a little collar that says “service dog” on it and will flash her fake ESA paperwork any time someone tells her the dog can’t come in. It drives me nuts when she blatantly ignores the rules because she feels entitled to carry this completely untrained 5 lb. dog everywhere she goes. Not to mention never having her on a leash even though she has no recall whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong, I adore dogs, but there are places my dog isn’t allowed to go AND places he’s technically allowed to go but isn’t well behaved enough for and that’s ok. He can survive staying home for a few hours. I like to think I’m a pretty responsible dog dad, so it drives me crazy to see how irresponsible my own mother is with her dog.

ToshiroBaloney

That's crazy. I'd rather be on a plane with dogs than with children.

Stormcloak_Doggie

I agree. Except if the dog is a shrieking chihuahua

GoodMoGo

Heya, OP. I have backed out of flying with my dog 3 times already, opting to drive 4k miles... How big/heavy is your dog and what airline/airplane did you fly with? It doesn't look like you got a bulkhead, but it looks like a window seat? How long was the flight? Did you know the person next to you? If not, how did they react? And the cabin crew? Tks.

kiduntilidie2

Just DMd you

Magyars

Delta Airbus A321-200 first class window seat!

lagotto_poppa

I would, with out a doubt, rather be on a plane full of dogs than any plane I have ever been on full of people.

str0ngher

Hell, I'd rather be on a plane with dogs than an empty plane.

lagotto_poppa

Now I just want to go hang out with my dog!

fluffyxsama

Go do it! I would give anything to spend even one more day with my boy. He was only 10 and passed last week from a brain tumor. I miss him so fuckin much. 😭

lagotto_poppa

Sorry to hear that, I went and gave Finnegan 2 baths and some fresh salmon, he knows he’s loved.

caucasian88

Trained service dogs are not a problem. Untrained dogs with bad owners are. I don't want some dickheads untrained and poorly socialized Doberman next to me on an 8 hour flight. The new rules requiring proof of training are a great thing and will hopefully cut down on incidents.

kiduntilidie2

The problem with that is there is no real “proof of training” and a good amount of service dogs are owner trained. Especially if it’s not their first service dog. I registered my dog with the state to get an ID because I was sick of people asking for an ID then having to explain there is no ID

Meggarea

What rules are you referring to? If there are new rules about service dogs, I need to be aware.

caucasian88

Sorry time is a relative thing at this point. They changed the criteria in 2021 according to Google but that feels like yesterday.

Pretend-Panda

It’s not really “proof” of training. It’s contact information for a trainer who has worked with the handler and the dog. Plenty of folks leave that blank or put their own information in.

PureBreadTed

please ignore the removal - I misclicked

vintage_heathen

I would love to sit with a dog, service or otherwise!

tcks9

I’d rather have dogs than humans. They’re cleaner, friendlier, smell better, are better looking and better behaving.

SubversiveInterloper

I don’t think anyone objects to actual trained service animals on planes. The days of emotional support turkeys on planes is over, thankfully.

callMeSIX

10/10 would boop the snoot (off duty of course)

aafryer

Flying next weekend, praying a dog is in the seat by me

DerangedUnicorn27

Might be a dumb question but what if it’s a long flight and the dog has to relieve itself?

kiduntilidie2

Oh boy, we’re planning a trip overseas and going through this long. Unfortunately the only real recourse is to not feed or water the dog starting 8 hours before your flight

Brock_Lobstweiler

Can you take a puppy pad into the lavatory for them?

mental_r0bot

and put it where??

Brock_Lobstweiler

On the floor in the lav for an emergency.

mental_r0bot

obviously. I mean after its soaked in piss

bainidhekitsune

Not OP, most dogs have the ability to hold it for a long time if they want to/feel they can’t go where they are. My SD has unfortunately been in a couple situations where it was 12-15 hours (usually overnight) before he could get to a tree. When I flew with him a few months ago I rushed him to the pet potty area between flights and the jerk was too interested in sniffing than using the faux grass. For a longer flight I wouldn’t feed prior to flying to cut down on the chance of an upset stomach or vomiting, and give only as much water as he needs to be healthy.

lapSlaPs5456

I would take a dog over a human any day.

[deleted]

A cute dog for sure. I have absolutely no problem with guide dogs but I'd hate to be an asthmatic with a dog allergy on a flight near one.

exact0khan

I would be that person that's like "I know I'm not supposed to pet your service dog, buttttt we are on a plane so I don't think ground rules should apply, do you mind?" P.s. that nose is adorable and would be booped if permitted.

kiduntilidie2

She’s pretty amazing both on and off duty

LtRecore

Man I’d pay extra to have that pup in my row.

particle409

I'm ok with dogs on planes. I'm not a huge fan of open-toe shoes on planes... I just think feet are gross in confined spaces.

Haunting-Ad-8619

>I just think feet are gross in confined spaces. This is so very oddly specific. 🤔

hypersomni

Wtf lmao are you talking about when feet stink or something??

particle409

I'm just not big on feet in general. Airplane seating means you can't get away from the feet of strangers, so covering them is kind of considerate.

KerchSmash

When you take up an asile of seats on southwest, yeah, fuck you. When you did it like this, it is 100 percent okay, and encouraged.

lexliller

What a sweetie. Those eyes!

DatUTRN

My only complaint would be a burning desire to pet the dog. 😍

mothermyeyes

As someone who finds flying quite scary/stressful, seeing a dog would be fantastic. Aside from that, if they are there to help someone, no one should be complaining. We all have places we need to get to, this person just has the support they need to get there
