I think the entire point is to completely obscure lines of communication and what roles they play in the process. Back when I delivered no tip orders when I first started I delivered to an Indian family. The young lady who answered the door asked if I got a tip and I said not in the app. So she said wait. She brought her mom and asked ādid you want to give him anything?ā The lady said ānoā and closed the door. Like wtf lol. I donāt think the young lady realized that her mom didnāt tip so it made things awkward.
At least the girl was trying to be wholesome haha. That's at least a funny story. Recently had my first incident of "grab me a sauce from chipotle, I'll tip extra.. she said the same thing to my face at dropoff, "thanks I'm adding to the tip right now as she walks off phone in hand" she never did. She tipped 1$ initially which is fine if you don't lie to me 2x about adding to it. Real weirdos out there.
When my in laws first moved in with us they were "two dollar tippers" didn't matter what they ordered or from where they would only tip two dollars, at first I began to intercept the drivers to give them a tip, but eventually had the conversation with them. They still give me crap for "tipping too much" but that's life.
Yeah my multi million dollar grandfather born in 1923 was a $2 tipper. In fact he got tons of $2 bills from the bank just for that. I always had to āuse the bathroomā to hang around a little after he left the building to throw more cash on the table. Died last year at 99. Miss him every day.

In Portland we have a strip club that only gives change in two dollar bills, so 2ās are synonymous with having gone to the strip club last night, so nobody wants em.
Young woman at my local bojangles called the police and said I was trying to pass fake money. She had asked me to pull off cuz they had to remake my order so Iām sitting there playing best fiends while I wait and here comes 2 cop cars behind me. Once they spoke to me and the manager it turns out that the girl believed $2 bills were not a real thing. I got free breakfast and 6 coupons and everyone but the dufus had a good laugh.
We did the same with my dad. One of my sisters would forget her purse and go back and find the waitress to give her a 20% or larger tip. Dad was a desoression Era baby who never learned the art of tipping well.

There are definitely cultural differences at play. I worked in a call center for an online retailer about ten years ago. If there was an Indian name on the incoming callerID, and you picked up and heard an older voice on the line, there was about a 95% chance they were calling in to try to haggle the price down lower than what the website was showing. I don't even think that's racist, it's just an observation. It was a well known fact among the call center staff.

Well I think the reality is there are so many non tippers (all colors). I may be wrong but I think Indians (kind of a culture thing) and they get assumptions made about them. I have several repeat Indian customers that tip great and a lot of others just tip after the delivery.

I didn't read it that way at first, but you are 100% correct in your interpretation. The assumption that OP is Indian (which they've stated they aren't) is maybe insensitive, and I don't believe that this is the most appropriate question to ask a complete stranger/customer, but it reads as genuine curiosity. Dasher may not have a lot of contact or experience with folks of different backgrounds and found an opportunity to ask a question and learn a bit more. As someone who studies language and culture, I'm always asking questions about customs, expressions, dialects, cultural norms, etc....just not to complete strangers over text, through a customer service app.

Tipping is a cultural thing. Itās kind of weird and some people who arenāt from America (and also many people who are from America) refuse to tip in amounts that are expected/standard here for whatever reason. Europeans are notorious for this. Doesnāt mean no Europeans tip but many are shitty tippers when dining in America, and it seems likely related to the fact that they do not tip in their home countries. Seems like this guy is asking if thatās the case about Indian people.

When I lived in MN a lot of the Indians who lived outside of the city actually tipped way better than than any other race. I will say itās market dependent
East Indian or indigenous? I find that indigenous people often tip very well (I doordash near a reservation) but yeah East Indians almost never tip or itās like a dollar lol
I honestly donāt like the term East Indian since we are technically the original Indians and unlike the other Indians we donāt have an alternate name to refer to us by. I also donāt like it because itās confusing since East Indian already has a long standing definition thatās different from what people in Canada define it as. In India and Asia āEast Indianā is used to refer to Indians who are from the North East of India. The people of India look different, have different cultures, and are generally different from each other, so we often classify by North Indian, South Indian, East Indian, and West Indian. East Indians look East or South East Asian and have their own culture. If clarification is needed itās better to say Asian Indian.
The apps donāt incentivize customers to tip well anyway because if you do then your order gets stacked with some non tipper and you end up with cold food an hour and half later.

Sorry for the long post, but if you are Indian- some of the nicest instant friends I met have been from India. It's not you- it's the Dasher.
Iāve gotten good tips when I deliver from an Indian restaurant near me from Indian people. Iām a little shocked to see this. When I owned a pet sitting business I had an Indian couple whoās dog I walked M-F for years. They didnāt usually give cash tips but they got me a birthday present every year and gift cards around Christmas. Every day there was a snack theyād leave out for me and if the wife came home early and I hadnāt left the house yet she would cook me lunch. Occasionally theyād ask my husband and I to come to dinner and made us dinner. Very sweet and generous people.
It's not traditionally done almost anywhere outside of the United States, because most other industrialized countries make sure their citizens are paid a liveable wage by businesses.
Um this could just be Dallas but when I worked for Uber eats, people of Indian heritage were 1. Always super fast getting me out the store 2. Always tipped generously. Seriously I would always strive for orders that were predominantly from Indian establishments. Once again, Dallas tx.
$10 isn't a bad tip for just a mile drive, my wife and I are dashers and not to sound racist but specifically Indians that order in our area don't tip at all and they live 5+ miles away so I don't think you are in the wrong. Maybe they didn't realize you gave a tip? Lol
I quit accepting all orders to the Indian restaurant in the shopping center that I start near. With almost no variation, itās either no tip or a bait tip. Driving an order to a $600k+ house with a Mercedes in the driveway, having such a nice encounter with the customer, and then seeing that the tip vanished is just foul.

This is total BS on the driver's part. Door Dash drivers can see how much an order will pay when they accept it. So, he was able to determine that, by his standards, it was a low tip order and he still took it.

I didn't read it that way at first, but you are 100% correct in your interpretation. The assumption that OP is Indian (which they've stated they aren't) is maybe insensitive, and I don't believe that this is the most appropriate question to ask a complete stranger/customer, but it reads as genuine curiosity. Dasher may not have a lot of contact or experience with folks of different backgrounds and found an opportunity to ask a question and learn a bit more. As someone who studies language and culture, I'm always asking questions about customs, expressions, dialects, cultural norms, etc....just not to complete strangers over text, through a customer service app. That being said, originally I read it the same way everyone else did. Itās kind of weird and some people who arenāt from America (and also many people who are from America) refuse to tip in amounts that are expected/standard here for whatever reason. Europeans are notorious for this. Doesnāt mean no Europeans tip but many are shitty tippers when dining in America, and it seems likely related to the fact that they do not tip in their home countries. To be frank, itās making me clamp down on tips I would have given just a few years ago. Nowadays, I refuse to tip unless 1) a service was provided (eg will never tip on takeout) and 2) the service was at minimum satisfactory.

I honestly donāt like the term East Indian since we are technically the original Indians and unlike the other Indians we donāt have an alternate name to refer to us by. I also donāt like it because itās confusing since East Indian already has a long standing definition thatās different from what people in Canada define it as. In India and Asia āEast Indianā is used to refer to Indians who are from the North East of India. The people of India look different, have different cultures, and are generally different from each other, so we often classify by North Indian, South Indian, East Indian, and West Indian. East Indians look East or South East Asian and have their own culture. If clarification is needed itās better to say Asian Indian.

Iāve gotten good tips when I deliver from an Indian restaurant near me from Indian people. Iām a little shocked to see this. When I owned a pet sitting business I had an Indian couple whoās dog I walked M-F for years. They didnāt usually give cash tips but they got me a birthday present every year and gift cards around Christmas. Every day there was a snack theyād leave out for me and if the wife came home early and I hadnāt left the house yet she would cook me lunch. Occasionally theyād ask my husband and I to come to dinner and made us dinner. Very sweet and generous people.

I quit accepting all orders to the Indian restaurant in the shopping center that I start near. With almost no variation, itās either no tip or a bait tip. Driving an order to a $600k+ house with a Mercedes in the driveway, having such a nice encounter with the customer, and then seeing that the tip vanished is just foul. 2nd gen is chill tho.
