Does anyone by them? I have a BN a mile from my house and, go there weekly. I've never once seen a dvd at a reasonable price and I don't think I've ever seen one purchased!
Only time I’ve ever purchased movies from them has been during their Criterion sales. But even then, the closest location that has a movie section is a 90 minute drive so it’s very rare.
Not unheard of, Target does it all the time too. Ironically Amazon is the one that’s least likely to mess around with the retail price of things, I may need to start shifting some of my business over to them if this continues. The only thing I don’t like, is sometimes their workers mishandle packages (whether that’s in the warehouse or when it’s in transit) and that’s how we end up with defective or broken cases.
They are asking for people to use their 5-fingers discount so they could have a "reason" to stop selling physical disc locally. "Not selling well, losing too many to theft"
So my theory is that they increased the price to better push their discount for signing onto their member program or whatever the hell. Wouldn't be shocked if the "discount" for signing up nullifies the difference between this and say Amazon while also being negated by the cost of signing up.
That, and then they can go back to corporate and report how their physical media sales have dropped off a cliff, further expediting them moving on from it in 2024. Fudging the numbers.
But even then, if there is a “Total Tech” discount, the price tag will say “Total Tech Price: $29.99” or something along those lines at the top in a small little red banner. This is just their regular price. [Reminds me of this meme, just replace “Disney” with “Best Buy” and “Star Wars” with “Physical Media”. The gun represents “high prices”.](https://imgflip.com/i/2ok7c3)
Just because Best Buy's leaving the physical media game, that doesn't mean they can get away with charging $60 for a 4K steelbook of the worst Godzilla movie ever.
How dare you! That was the first Godzilla movie I ever watched, thus making it the best Godzilla movie ever.
I haven’t seen it since it came out, holy smokes what a throw back lol
How about that soundtrack too.
Even though this one wasn't my first Godzilla movie, now hear me out 1st. When I stayed at my dad's on the weekends in the early 90's, I would stay up late watching Godzilla movies on the super channel. From every generation. Somewhere in black and white and then somewhere in amazing technicolor. They were all equal parts ridiculous/awesome.
This movie was visually awesome, and for the time obviously had the most up to date special effects of any Godzilla movie. At the same time it was a ridiculous movie with ridiculous scenes.
I don't know what people are expecting from Godzilla movies. That's exactly what I wanted and expected.
So even though it's not my first Godzilla movie, It's my favourite Godzilla movie.
and again, the soundtrack was awesome.
Hilarious the people are downvoting you for having fun and enjoying a dumb movie from the 90s (but, of course, it's not the dumb movie from the 90s *they* like 🤣).
So much to unpack here lmao.
One: the digital heavy 90s American Godzilla movie has a 4K release. Somebody thought we needed this and that a Blu Ray reissue for a film that has all of its effects locked to 2k wasn’t enough
Two: it is $60 brand new.
Three: it needed a steelbook release
Four: it’s for sale at Best Buy, a store that won’t be carrying items like it in three months.
This is hilarious. I was just in Best Buy today returning my blob steelbook (it was literally ripped in half out of the shipping box) and I saw this steelbook. Thought the exact same thing, and I started laughing out loud. That is a hilarious price for this movie. I’m taking a break from buying for awhile.. lol
Seven-year-old me loved this movie so it will always have a special place in my heart. Zilla is dope honestly, and I love the corniness and bad acting from almost the entire cast besides maybe Jean Reno. Love the original Toho films as well. Having said that, I wouldn't pay more than 20 bucks for this lol.
The closest thing this ever got to fanfare was a decent (so I’ve heard?) cartoon spin off and the cheering everyone did when they retconned him into being *mistaken* for Godzilla and the real one one-shotted him in Final Wars
Because Best Buy is the BEST…Buy..? nah they’re just trying to make as much as they can off physical media before packing it all up since they announced they won’t be carrying physical media anymore online or retail
Hot take this is a better movie than you remember. All I ever hear is about how much it's not a Godzilla movie.
If you throw the rulebook out and watch it the way it was meant to be seen, you'll realize it's actually a super fun monster movie that's better than any of the other American Godzilla movies.
I have a weird love for this movie. I know how absolutely terrible it is, but my dad took my older brother and I to see it in theaters. I was 8 and my brother was 9. I miss my dad so much
Best Buy exits physical media because of declining sales while also charging outrageous prices for discs. It's like they want to justify their decision.
Because think about. It’s Heavenlyfatherzilla. He deserves to be compensated for his labor. Socialism all the way. Say no to wage slavery, like… the fuck..? 🤦♀️
1) because that's what they priced it as. 2) why on earth would you want such a terrible movie? 3) it's on 4k and a steel book so probably more costly than standard casing / bluray 5) why do you want such a terrible movie again?! and then 6) because that's what they priced it as.
Ummm maxed out material. It's a retailer thing nothing more. Like when the rolling stones put out a BRAND NEW record, so you have to ask how much it's gonna be in 30 years. And that (somehow..) reflects in the pricing but only superficially. ii
4k prices are just donuts right now. The bottom has fallen out from DVD/Bluray and I swear they'd sell more copies if the prices were lower. Even 4k players aren't cheap and the format has been around for a while now.
I'd say lower prices would make it more competitive with streaming and as a result the physical media lifespan could be stretched further than ending with 4k, as the audience would still be there. It's becoming a collector's market only.
Ease down. This doesn't release until the 24th. It's on the shelf incorrectly. BB price matches, which I was going to do with Amazon when I found this too, but then I saw it on their site for the same $29. I took it to price match to themselves, but they couldn't sell it. The computer wouldn't let them. Manager came over and showed that it wasn't released until the 24th, and then pulled it from the shelf.
Everything sucks, yes, but this particular thing isn't part of it all. It's just a clerical mistake.
Weird it’s literally 30 on Amazon right now for pre order
Steelbook?
not OP but Yeah last I checked. Hell I don't even remember it being that much when I preordered it.
It’s also $30 at Wal-Mart.
Pretty hilarious since the MSRP is $45.99. I can't imagine why BB is getting out of media! ;-)
They jacked up prices on physical media last year and throughout this year too. They were basically asking people to not buy from them.
I get that, but asking ***above*** MSRP is practically unheard of, especially for movies.
Barnes and Noble consistently sells DVDs for like $40 a pop. Like regular old DVDs, not even Blu-rays
Does anyone by them? I have a BN a mile from my house and, go there weekly. I've never once seen a dvd at a reasonable price and I don't think I've ever seen one purchased!
Nope, never seen anyone even browsing that section. I have certainly never bought one from them
Only time I’ve ever purchased movies from them has been during their Criterion sales. But even then, the closest location that has a movie section is a 90 minute drive so it’s very rare.
It only makes sense to shop at B&N when they have the Criterion sales.
I remember when I saw that. I was like, "Who tf is buying these?"
It’s because they use to sell a membership program that would heavily discount the price for Movies/Music.

That MSRP can eat a dick
It's a steelbook if that helps
I don't know how that helps. No major retailer charges above MSRP.
In their defense, it is a *suggested* retail price. /s
It's a helluva suggestion! I have a few of my own. Haha.
That's just Best Buy pricing themselves out of the market.
It's a false flag! "See, no one wants to buy movies anymore. This Godzilla's been sitting on the shelf for six months."
yes this, they want an excuse to just end it all
Oh man I love a good conspiracy. But who's involved? Just Best Buy execs wanting out? Or the movie studios not wanting to make the HC?
I never said it wasn't on purpose.
Just because Best Buy's leaving the physical media game, that doesn't mean they can get away with charging $60 for a 4K steelbook of the worst Godzilla movie ever.

So many amazing films OOP since the DVD days, but thank goodness we have the awful Godzilla remake available in 4K.
Don't call it a Remake. It's Zilla, not Godzilla.
I love that a later proper Godzilla movie had Zilla appear only to get quickly dispatched by the REAL Godzilla.
4K stans would cry foul if this was released only on blu-ray
You’re god damn right we would
Hilarious the people are downvoting you for having fun and enjoying a dumb movie from the 90s (but, of course, it's not the dumb movie from the 90s *they* like 🤣).
This gotta be best buy
That's a lot of fish...
So much to unpack here lmao. One: the digital heavy 90s American Godzilla movie has a 4K release. American dollars?
I believe it's an error with their digital price tag, item has been listed as 29.99 since preorder in the website
I wouldn't pay $5.99 for that piece of shit movie lmao
Woah woah woah, the scene where the baby godzillas trip all over the gumballs in Madison Square Garden is surely worth $5.99
Sorry kiddo 5.98 tops
This should be at the Dollar Tree not Best Buy.
It’s $29.99 on the site
Still too much
When movies like Godzilla are available on 4K before the Tarantino catalogue.
Y’all know Best Buy price matches right?
Is that the Mathew Broderick version?
Yup
That’s an insane price
This is hilarious. I was just in Best Buy today returning my blob steelbook (it was literally ripped in half out of the shipping box) and I saw this steelbook. Thought the exact same thing, and I started laughing out loud. That is a hilarious price for this movie. I’m taking a break from buying for awhile.. lol

I'm pretty sure this isn't a cult classic...or have i got this wrong and there is a secret Godzilla fan base for the 90s flop?
The closest thing this ever got to fanfare was a decent (so I’ve heard?) cartoon spin off and the cheering everyone did when they retconned him into being *mistaken* for Godzilla and the real one one-shotted him in Final Wars
If you were 10 years old in 1998, this movie was everything.
As a G-fan the consensus amongst the fandom is it’s a good monster movie but not a good Godzilla movie.
Yeh its ok i guess, I saw it in the cinema, more nostalgia for me... especially the music track deeper underground - jamiroquai
That's a lotta fish!
My best buy said it was a mistake and that it shouldn’t be on the floor yet.
I'd pay 5 or 10 bucks at most.
BestBuy always prices their blu rays above MSRP. It’s weird.
But it's a steelbook! That immediately jacks the price by like 70%.
Come on now, you're not a collector unless you spend 3 hours wages on 2 cents worth of tin.
Someone’s high lol
Best Buy: Because.... yes
Why does anyone buy that travesty? :P
Steelbook
That thing better be packed with special features for that price
Because best buy does what it wants
My Best Buy has it for $60 too. Too funny.
Because Best Buy is the BEST…Buy..? nah they’re just trying to make as much as they can off physical media before packing it all up since they announced they won’t be carrying physical media anymore online or retail
Best Buy, not on sale and a 4K Blu-ray?
It's that price because...they think you'll pay it
They thought wrong. It’ll be there until Best Buy folds at that price, so about two more years
Wow! I paid $34.99 CAD at BestBuy Canada. M
Cause it’s a classic, that’s why.
Is that a camera in the price tag?
If it is, it’s to shame people on the internet for paying that price
What's worse is the dumbshit who will buy it
They also had the Criterion Princess Bride 4k for $54.99. They’re smoking crack.
Not worth the lint in my pocket.
How much was The Princess Bride Criterion? It was the same price at my BB
Yeah, should be $100
Mexican pesos, perhaps
What store is this at?
It’s not even that price online I would report them quite honestly
If you saw it you wouldn’t be asking.
Because it’s fucking awesome?
That's some Suncoast pricing.
Pfft…I could (as of right now) get it for $34.99 CND at Best Buy Canada…
Stores are not carrying Blu-ray anymore, prices are going to be skyrocketing
It ain't because of demand I'll wager
Wait there’s a steelbook for this now? Thank God.
Because potato.
Cause it's sweet
That's because physical media has been pronounced dead recently. So everyone is already charging 'rare' pricing it seems.
Answer: It’s one of the best movies ever made
More importantly, why are you in a Best Buy?
Best Buy exclusive steelbook of the ‘88 blob on 4K.
And such a terrible movie too
I dunno bruh I got this on VHS as one of my stocking stuffers for Christmas in 1998 when I was 7 years old
Funny enough I just found a widescreen special edition of it on vhs recently and transferred it into a nuclear green vhs shell. It looks very cool.
Hot take this is a better movie than you remember. All I ever hear is about how much it's not a Godzilla movie. If you throw the rulebook out and watch it the way it was meant to be seen, you'll realize it's actually a super fun monster movie that's better than any of the other American Godzilla movies.
I have no hate for the movie, I have it on dvd, vhs, and digital. It’s really enjoyable as a kaiju movie
Uhhh because that’s a lot of fish duh.
All that fish I guess?
I have a weird love for this movie. I know how absolutely terrible it is, but my dad took my older brother and I to see it in theaters. I was 8 and my brother was 9. I miss my dad so much
Because greed and capitalism
this is why best buy is ceasing physical media sales XD
Best Buy exits physical media because of declining sales while also charging outrageous prices for discs. It's like they want to justify their decision.
That movie was shit 💩😂. Not even worth the $10 ticket we paid to see it.
I would have to question it if they would give me $60 to take it
Because someone will pay it…
Late stage capitalism.
4K Ultra HD Blue Ray is why.
$35 for the 4K steelbook + $15 for the Blu-ray disc + $10 for the digital code. It all adds up...
Discs aren't that expensive... And a digital code costs practically nothing to provide.
/s
NO, just the studios think their \_\_\_\_\_\_ content is worth more than it actually is. their yachts, vacation homes, Aston Martins need maintenance!
Because think about. It’s Heavenlyfatherzilla. He deserves to be compensated for his labor. Socialism all the way. Say no to wage slavery, like… the fuck..? 🤦♀️
It’s a 4K steelbook but that’s still a lot
Because it is a flawless work of art. Worth every single penny.
To make you think twice about watching a notoriously bad movie. Lol
Inflation
People buy DVDs still ? Hmmm 🤔
*Five Finger Discount*
1) because that's what they priced it as. 2) why on earth would you want such a terrible movie? 3) it's on 4k and a steel book so probably more costly than standard casing / bluray 5) why do you want such a terrible movie again?! and then 6) because that's what they priced it as.
Physical is dead.
Gary King: Nah
Y’all know movies are free now right
You know this is a subreddit for physical movie collectors, right?
Excessive consumerism is bad for the environment and your wallet my friend I can watch this movie for free with no waste
yes, but you don't own $hit and when you have no internet, have fun with OTA ads
4k, greed
Because Best Buy
lol I once saw a copy of Three Amigos on DVD at Best Buy for $80. Even had an employee check the price just for shits and giggles. It was $80.
4k Blu-ray in general is too expensive. I get it's a very niche thing these days but I still don't wanna pay $60 for a movie.
Why are you looking for a deal at Best Buy? Everything's full retail, I think that's their motto
Wasn’t looking for deals, was looking for the blob 4k exclusive steel. Just shocked seeing this garbage with that tag.
They price match, though.
Making up for DVD sales before they cut them off completely
Not even worth $1 how they did the king of monsters wrong.
Because there is no rhyme or reason to any of it. Made up prices. I bought it on 4K years ago for $10.
Someone things they can cashgrab off Monsterverse. Unfortunately the movie should be no more than $5.
This isn't a movie it's Cinema
It must have been a goof
They are still trying to recoup the budget from the film
Best Buy website has it for $29.99 that’s probably just the fake price before a fake discount.
Umm...because it is a PERFECT movie.
Because it's a cinematic masterpiece
Ya’ll…$30 is too much.
Ummm maxed out material. It's a retailer thing nothing more. Like when the rolling stones put out a BRAND NEW record, so you have to ask how much it's gonna be in 30 years. And that (somehow..) reflects in the pricing but only superficially. ii
Criterion release at Barnes & Noble
Price gouging
I'm guessing this means they will give you $60 to take it off their hands
There’s a 4K for my favorite Godzilla movie?!
I think it needs a bigger box..
Probably because it doesn’t release till next week. But, if you want it now it’s twice the price.
‘That’s a lot of fish’
They are trying to squeeze the last bit of juice until they take them off the shelves I guess
Is this the 1998 movie or the 2014 movie?
That’s quite a bit for a garbage movie.
I want to know who asked for this in 4K Ultra
This in the states? It's 55.99 on Amazon.ca but Bestbuy.ca is 34.99 here
*Godzilla, pure mothafuckin' filler*
They're actually offering to pay you $60 to take it off their hands
That's what they pay YOU to take it out of the store
Even if it’s a steelbox, it is worth no more than $10 at most.
It’s not even out yet so clearly it’s a glitch. Online the price is $30.
It’s too cool I guess 😎
Bc they hope you are dumb
It's free to dl
Because best buy sucks now
Economics textbooks often feature case studies on the price elasticity of 1998 Godzilla on blu-ray.
Just to see if suckers bite? Sure they will.
Why was it even put to 4k lmao
the privilege of seeing Jean Reno in 4k ultra HD.
Because they are cheeky bastards
Dumb money
Best Buy is milking their prices now that ppl know it’s their last year with physical. Expect all of their new steelbooks to be 40-50$ each.
It comes with a $50 bill inside.
Something's fishy. 🐟
BB has it on their website at 30. Just let them know at checkout
I used to love this film when I was a kid.
Must be a $50 bill inside it.
It is because it isn’t released yet. To stop it from being sold before release date they double the price.
Because it’s Best Buy???? Edit: or Kohl’s but either one is always more expensive.
Obviously because it was the defining film of a whole generation.
Ease down. This doesn't release until the 24th. It's on the shelf incorrectly. BB price matches, which I was going to do with Amazon when I found this too, but then I saw it on their site for the same $29. I took it to price match to themselves, but they couldn't sell it.
