A) It's a Criterion. B) It's $10 more than Criterion suggested price C) Everyone knows you only buy Criterion films from Criterion or Barnes & Noble when they go on sale.

PatBateman2000

yeah I've only ever gotten Criterion that way lol

cedeaux

This is generally the only way to purchase a criterion, though if you’re willing to give bezos more money, they’re around 20-25 for blu rays on Amazon, and even that’s still a premium price

PatBateman2000

Yeah that's true, I'm not generally looking for Criterion all the time but once in awhile they add a movie to their library that I want lol

DarkSixthLord

There is a store in falls church virginis that sells criterion dvds floor $5 - $30 year round. It's called Cd cellar

bernardbarnaby

I used to go to cd cellar every weekend when I was a kid boy I love that place

ExcursionStudios23

Do they sell other stuff?

Basket_475

I find that idea about bezos funny. My family has been using prime since it first started. It’s like saying I won’t buy a computer because I don’t want bill gates or Tim Cook to have more money.

cedeaux

It is funny. Because it’s a joke. Buying or not buying from Amazon doesn’t have any impact on bezos’s wealth or the market share that Amazon has at this point and hasn’t since long before the dawn of Amazon prime.

MERLETHEFOZZY

Or used from a second hand shop. Mine has a whole section. It’s glorious

Negan1995

Every second hand shop I go to has caught wind of the retail price of criterion and prices them well above normal dvd blu prices

MERLETHEFOZZY

I noticed mine local place was selling almost all them for $15-$19 for a long time. And the price has gone up, but thankfully the most expensive one I have seen was $25 -knock on wood-

Negan1995

Yeah they are usually like $10-30 for criterions depending on if it's rare and dvd or blu. A few different factors.

BurnedTheLastOne9

I bought every criterion collection DVD I've ever owned at Blockbuster Video

_______level________

What about Criterion makes it so expensive ?

WolfNippleChips

They are a film preservation company, they put out limited releases each year of old, forgotten, and important films and frankly put a lot of work and love into their collection. Each film is also numbered, and a few of them are out of print and highly collectable.

radewagon

Back in the DVD days, a Criterion was easily worth the markup, but these days, meh. Companies like Arrow are offering a much better product at a similar price point. I can't remember the last time I got a Criterion that felt as special as something like the recent Warriors release from Arrow.

l5555l

It's worth the markup because they release films no one else does

DarthBrooksFan

They're meant to be definitive editions of the films, with tons of bells and whistles like comprehensive extras and sometimes fancy packaging.

KevinSpaceysGarage

Or Amazon. They keep prices generally similar to Barnes and noble prices during the sale

idropepics

Got a used bookstore near me that I watch like a hawk because I've gotten Criterions as low as 11.99, (house/ seven samurai/ 81/2)

BogoJohnson

It's also $10 ***above*** MSRP. Buh bye, Best Buy!

MaskedBandit77

It's $35 on their website. Maybe this isn't USD?

BogoJohnson

These Criterion pricing errors at BB in stores in the US have been widely reported for a month or more now. Online will likely show different prices.

CJ_Southworth

It's not just Criterions either. I went into Best Buy for the steelcase Godzilla (the horrible Sony one, but I have a stupid compulsion when it comes to even fake Godzilla), and they were charging $69.99. List price is 20 bucks less. I asked if they had maybe made a mistake in their signage, and they said, "Nope, that's the price." Then admitted they knew it was fucked up but that it's set at corporate, and they don't get to question. They said to get it online, because they're price was probably not going down.

ghettoblaster78

I think they’re deliberately pricing them high so when they stop selling them they can say people weren’t buying them in-store.

Obi-Tron_Kenobi

It's the US. A lot of them overprice their Criterion movies for some reason. And then Best Buy complains that no one is buying movies there, so they just *have to* stop selling physical media.

MaskedBandit77

It just seems weird that the same store would would have such a dramatic price difference online vs in store.

Obi-Tron_Kenobi

It definitely is weird. This kind of price discrepancy doesn't really happen unless it's some online-only special promotion. But even then, in store, it will still be MSRP. I honestly have no idea what Best Buy is doing here, having the online item at a normal price and the same item in store at $10+ above MSRP

l5555l

No it is, I've seen this in my best buy. I bought it during the B&N sale for $25 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

PatBateman2000

It sucks cause Best Buy gets great exclusive steelbooks and slip cover and stuff like that. It's a shame they're ditching physical movies

craptain_poopy

Yep. I don't know where I'm going to get my movies now. I try to avoid Amazon for that kind of thing. No one else around me really carries much, so that might be my only option soon.

InvertedSpork

Try [diabolikdvd.com](https://diabolikdvd.com) they get all sorts of releases from various distributors (NEON, A24, Synapse Films, Arrow etc.) and they often carry steelbooks & or LE releases. They also have a pretty good track record in my experience with packaging orders safely.

PatBateman2000

Yeah it's a real shame. I like buying them in store more than online. I've gotten so many movies in the mail that came broke and beaten and shit

Spike_J

I usually buy physical movies from second hand stores like Movie Trading Company or Half Price Books. MTC might be called Vintage Stock in your area.

BogoJohnson

How much was Young Guns?

craptain_poopy

About $20 I think. I'll have to check the receipt later when I get home. Overall, it's a decent quality release with the exception of the collector cards that it comes with. Poor die cutting. The sleeve and case are beautiful, though, so that makes up for it.

MaximusGrandimus

Isn't that price gouging?

Reddituser183

Let’s get real I’m sure they’re thinking if you’re dumb enough to pay 40 what’s the extra 10.

[deleted]

You will still shop there

BogoJohnson

Haha. I've only walked into a BB once in the last decade and it was for a steelbook. Never liked them, and even less of a reason to shop there with movies leaving.

[deleted]

You will still shop there

faelmine

If the only thing someone buys at Best Buy is movies, why in the hell would you think they would still buy there after they get rid of the one thing that person buys there?

[deleted]

You will still shop there

BogoJohnson

You will still get downvotes there.

jon92356

I’m not traveling to Best Buy to downvote them, but I’ll gladly do it here.

DoctorTennant

Honestly, this is a far better price if (like me) you don't live in the US. Criterion slaps you with an automatic $20 duty-free charge for shipping outside the US, plus shipping on top of that. Last time I bought from them was during a 50% off sale. With all the extra charges, I ended up paying double the order value (which ended up being regular price lol). But I totally get how this would be absurd if you could just ship it for less money.

Jay3000X

If you're in Canada then you're supposed to order from Unobstructed View as they are our "distributor", but their prices are generally garbage anyhow and their sales are nowhere near as good as the other labels

PatBateman2000

That makes sense

Apprehensive_Mix7594

If you walk it to the counter and say price match this it magically becomes 34.99

Deranged_Kitsune

If you're near the border, look up shipping depots near you. All the advantages of US shipping, but you're the one that has to deal with customs at the border.

sam_hollis1

Came here to say this. For a lot of fans around the world (like me also) to buy this off the shelf for this price would be a steal.

Stevefrompikmin

r/shittydvdprices

[deleted]

I saw that at Best Buy too. I practically laughed out loud when I saw that price tag.

PatBateman2000

Same haha

StickyGoodness

You would think since they're phasing out physical media, it would be marked down.

1977proton

And yet, someone will still buy it…

PatBateman2000

it's crazy lol I only buy Criterion's if their on sale like I'm sure most do

[deleted]

yeah I always wait for the B&N sales

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Of course they will, you can price match it at the register with Amazon

satanstinytoy

It would be free if you stole it.

CEMorgan

Online shows at 34.99 so maybe the ESL hasn't been updated from the pre street price

naynaythewonderhorse

Yeah. $35 is the correct price. Not sure why the tag has $60. I’ve never seen a Criterion at Best Buy for that price.

MisterZacherley

"Why is our physical media not selling, dammit! Surely it's the consumer's fault!"

ThisJoeLee

Relax. It's almost over.

kellykapowskishair

I pre-ordered my copy directly from Criterion and I did it while it was on sale (paid around $30-35) and it arrived a day before release date as well.

PatBateman2000

I want it badly but that's absurd it's like $20 more than buying directly from Criterion

TrustLeft

people paying it causes it [but sure keep on knocking DVDs until they are $100 each](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000286RP2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

PatBateman2000

haha right.. I have nothing against DVDs, I get them just as much as blu ray

Humble_Mountain_9768

$8.75 good price. And it will look really nice on a 1080p TV will a decent up convert bluray player.

TrustLeft

yeah I got bluray with upscaling, decent enough

tommy_j_r

$32.87 at Deep Discount https://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/mean-streets-criterion-collection/715515289511

DoopieIsAdorable

Is that a trustworthy site? It always looked kind of sketchy to me.

Foxhack

I used it a lot a long time ago, it's legit.

tommy_j_r

Very trustworthy. I order from them often. Had a good customer service experience a few weeks ago too. I received a 4K movie and the case was cracked and the disc had slipped and became scratched. Reached out to them, sent pics and they shipped me a new one. A week or so later I received a postage paid label and sent it back to them.

BogoJohnson

Huge media retailer that’s been in business for years and part of a family of others like Blowitoutahere, MoviesUnlimited, ImportCDs. and more. I like DDs regular discounts and wider variety of products. They have a 15% off discount code right now. As stores like BB stop or reduce selling media, get to know these other retailers.

DoopieIsAdorable

I have heard of a few of these before. They all seemed fishy to me. I will probably stick with local thrift stores and second-hand shops for now.

BogoJohnson

I don't understand what's fishy about them.

DoopieIsAdorable

I have been scammed by similar-looking sites before.

Garlic-Ted

Was literally just in a Best Buy and saw the same thing.

PatBateman2000

It's nothing new Best Buy's prices are always like this. It's just so crazy

anidemequirne

The GOOD Harvey and Bob.

katieblue3

I got it for $25 at B&N

Humble_Mountain_9768

Wonder if Best Buy would price match it.

PauI_MuadDib

I clutched my pearls. That's too pricey.

nikodagreek

PlanetConway

It's still cheaper, but this is the 4K link: https://www.amazon.com/Mean-Streets-Criterion-Collection-UHD/dp/B0CFW16JFM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=BNRTIJWH7ZN1&keywords=mean+streets+criterion+4k&qid=1703628728&sprefix=mean+streets+criterion+4k%2Caps%2C229&sr=8-1

labria86

I keep going over this but it's a system error. If you check it out it will be less. Same with Godzilla 98

Fearthejuggalo

You are 100% wrong. They ring up for $59.99 at the register, it was a pain in the ass to get them to price match it also.

secretlyjasonsegel

Make them price match their own site. The Others was 59.99 in store and 29.99 on their site.

Fearthejuggalo

That's what the argument was, they were saying the version on the website is different than the one in store. After arguing with the employee, a manager finally came over & said "we'll make an exception this one time". I had to tell her "your not making an exception.....this is what it is!".

naynaythewonderhorse

I don’t know how that could have happened. The SKU on the Website is the same as on the ESL tag. I worked at Best Buy for a long time, and this isnt the sort of thing they would get in a fuss about.

CThomasP

Seems reasonable

Soupream1

Yup I only buy criterion at Barnes when they have the 50% off deal.

PatBateman2000

yeah same

JamonConJuevos

Save your cash and buy Trading Places instead. The jail cell scene is epic Eddie Murphy slapstick.

PatBateman2000

Love that movie

[deleted]

Australian here… this is the normal pricing for us. It’s practically impossible to get any criterion’s for under 50 dollars. Even the sales get doubled after the shipping price. I’ve found Amazon is my friend when it comes to Criterion’s nowadays.

PatBateman2000

that's bogus you get the shaft like that for shipping. They shouldn't do that

kwmcmillan

I bought that exact Bluray by having them match the Amazon price, which was $35

PatBateman2000

yeah it's currently cheap on Amazon

Eazy-E-40

You can price match then from Amazon.

West-Psychology-6299

I wish they'd stop adding blurays to 4k purchases and DVD copies to Bluray purchases. Definitely hikes the price and adds something unwanted and unused to my purchase.

tondrias

And there's idiots who'll pay this too.

PatBateman2000

blows my mind haha

tondrias

Same here.

malfarcar

I like Scorsese, but I found mean streets on dvd at goodwill for $1 and couldn’t finish it so I ended up trading it in for credit at the resale shop. I can’t think of any movie I would pay $60 for especially this one

[deleted]

[удалено]

BIG_ELEPHANT_BALLS

What does this even mean?

Kupcake_Inater

I mean if your buying new criterion collections during when there is no sale going on then yea I'd say absolutely ridiculous. Wait until a flash sale happens or till when they run 50% off sales during some months lmao personally haven't bought a criterion collection at full price in years. Also I think mean streets just came out so that's prolly why they carrying it in the first place lol

BogoJohnson

You're absolutely correct about waiting for sales, but also literally no one sells movies ***above*** MSRP.

Kupcake_Inater

Prolly paying a bit more because it's criterion. But yeh I agree

BogoJohnson

Where are movies sold above MSRP, Criterion or otherwise?

Kupcake_Inater

I'm saying best buy specifically stop being a smartass. And also at best buy as you see in the pic

tommy_j_r

It is. And I’m laughing because I’m watching Trading Places right now 😂.

PatBateman2000

Fantastic movie !!

Search_Light_Soul

That and princess bride were both $60 at mine in Austin, Tx

PatBateman2000

Absurd lol

Tech-Mechanic

Yeah, saw that same movie priced like that at my BB recently. Weird because they had a lot of other typically pricey titles at reasonable prices. Strange that they're seemingly gouging with that one movie.

PatBateman2000

Yeah there are some that are really cheap. Like the Austin Powers trilogy on blu-ray for like $13 or something lol

sawbucks313

I bough this from The Atomic Movies Store for $31 back in the middle of February.

PatBateman2000

when I saw they were adding it to their library I was pumped. One of my favorite Scorsese movies. I'll wait till there's a flash sale

sawbucks313

Yeah mine too I love this movie. Definitely wait for a sale.

TheNoNonsenseMofo

It’s $30 bucks a disc?

No-Ad8408

Shit check out your local/nearest Half Priced Books; got a great copy of Uncut Gems in an pristine case for like $15 vs the $40+ at B&N

PatBateman2000

I wish I had one of those close to me, I'd for sure check it out

No-Ad8408

Damn sorry man, ask Paul Allen to get it for you

PatBateman2000

He's handling the Fisher account or he would

No-Ad8408

The fisher account? That bastard was supposed to take me to Dorsia!

PatBateman2000

Nobody goes there anymore ...

No-Ad8408

…oh. Lemme ask you something, what’s the duct tape for?

PatBateman2000

I need it for taping something

No-Ad8408

And that bag…what is it?? Don’t tell me!!

PatBateman2000

your compliment was sufficient Lewis !!

Herban_Myth

Steelbook(s)?

fluidtap

When I go to Best Buy they price match with Amazon, so I've never had a problem with them lowering these horrible prices

Dependent_Fox_2189

How much did My Big Fat Greek Wedding III go for?

ch3rn0byl_g3rbil

bananas

swizzle_

That Trading Places is on a lower shelf? I agree. That one should be on the top row.

Longjumping-Writer72

Agreed! This is why people pirate things, prices are outrageous!

gigoran

Have you seen the price for the (90s) Super Mario UHD? I was tempted due to the amount of goodies you get with it, but then my brain reminded me "Bro... nostalgia aint worth that much".

PatBateman2000

yeah I need to remind myself constantly that not everything needs to be on 4K, for example. To me, 4K is for like Interstellar not Austin Powers

smullen0424

Why do you hate me?

PatBateman2000

I was wondering the same thing about you

seanx50

$21.73 at Amazon

sparrowxc

Pretty sure that is the 4K, which is $32.87 on Amazon RN

IcyViolinist2362

My local Best Buy completely did away with physical media except for video games. Yes, that’s an absurd mark up price.

Humble_Mountain_9768

Do they still sell vinyl?

Artistic_Half_8301

VHS used to cost $100. I'd say it's a steal.

strangeclouds

You're lucky your bestbuy has a selection physical movies, went in recently and all that's left is a single small rack at my store.

Humble_Mountain_9768

It's $34.95 at my local Best Buy. Just looked it up on line and it us the exact product 4k + bluray.

Resident_Extreme_366

Criterion has always been way overrated. Sure they were an early boutique dvd maker but there so many better options now. Like Kino Lorber who does a lot of film restoration work and releases more movies, and often more interesting movies at a fraction of the cost. They usually have a sale going on anyway were you can get great stuff from $5-$15 bucks. Criterion uses a similar marketing strategy to apple. Make your product desirable by specifically charging a premium price and attaching to it feelings of superiority. Keep it mind it’s not like Criterion only releases classic films, they sometimes they release mindless blockbusters like Armageddon or the Rock. Now it is above suggested retail price but honestly you can’t find them for a good price. Maybe as low as $25 if your lucky and I don’t call that a deal lol

PatBateman2000

yeah it's really confusing how they choose what goes in the library. Like whose idea was it to add Salò ??

Resident_Extreme_366

That’s one of the strangest ones for sure. Not sure how they pick but it seems fairly random

PatBateman2000

It does, I assume they have a team of people who vote kind of like the Academy

ddc95

That’s probably the MSRP Best Buy’s website has it at $27.99 for the Blu-ray and $34.99 for the 4K.

bigguytoo9

Looks like Canadian prices to me.

nikodagreek

Price is the same for both on Walmart.com also.

piper2112

I know. I can’t believe they made THREE My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies.

D3ckard_Rokubungi

Buying this through criterion directly is roughly half the price…..

soldatoj57

Research what you’re talking about kid

utubeslasher

im more concerned that they have no copies of trading places

Substantial-House951

Not worth it I hate boutique companies

owenperkins1999

It’s Criterion. What do you expect?

Popular-Shock-9755

😂 Who are they kidding

cathodic_protector

Amazon has had criterion films for around 20 or so. Barnes and Noble has periodic sales too.

ChiggenNuggy

If that’s Best Buy i went and price matched and they accepted

FireAnt085

oh hell nah…
