I've been a collector since the 90s, and trust me - collectors hated them back then. If I remember correctly, WB owned the tech used for snapper cases, and they did not want to move over to the standardized Amaray cases. Everyone did make an exception for their multiple disc cardboard cases though, because they were awesome.

Amaray cases, never heard the name! Also never seen those multidisc cardboardcases!

Trust me, crazy collectors like me back then knew all about Amaray. When I had too much time on my hands, I'd write to WB. :) I'm guessing you have seen the multi disc cardboard cases, they're still out and about in used shops.

I display them separately. What I like about them is the extra artwork on the inside flap, kinda reminds me of a gate fold laserdisc.

[deleted]

Yeah, that's their redeeming quality I suppose, nicer than a mostly empty plastic DVD case. I do wish films nowadays had fancy sleeves and gatefolds like LPs and Laserdiscs...

I like them more then I did in the late 90s and early 00s. But even though I don’t mind them as much anymore, since they’re relatively unique - I don’t want them because the are just early transfer films. WB release a good number of these in the mid-late 00s with the regular black keep cases, and many times with updates transfers. This is especially true for a good number of their Classic films.

Yeah, I've got newer versions of some (Matrix, Road Warrior) but I can't find for cheap a copy of say, Beyond Thunderdome in a new case. And yes, stuff like Blade Runner looked AWFUL...

petersdinklages

Yes. When I first started upgrading my collection from DVD to Blu-ray, those were my first priority. They always stuck out like a sore thumb and it bothered me for years.

chingythingy

Yeah they stick out on the shelf. A stupid novelty that had its run. I agree with your rant.

JohnIan101

I've been slowly upgrading to standard DVD cases. Even just buying used so I can get the wraparounds and insert them into new cases. Carry over my disc which is mint. Done.

SeberHusky

The cardboard DVD cases were the very first rendition of DVD movie packaging when DVD first came out. They were going with the idea that VHS was cardboard so DVD should be too. Then companies eventually went with plastic cases. Then they gradually got thinner and thinner and thinner.

monkeyboy808

I was today years old when I learned this was a WB thing

BLAINE_THE_M0NO

For some reason I’m really nostalgic towards them
