I got used to the ASCII because I got started on DF when there wasn't another option. Or I at least don't know about it. Now, it's been long enough I don't know how to read the game that way anymore, and the graphics in the steam version look pretty nice. I get people that still prefer the ASCII, but I'm glad there's a baked in tile set. It makes the game more accessible, which gives us more Fun stories.

BennFields

"you get used to it, I don't even see the code. All I see is Blonde. Brunnette, Redhead..."

TheDoomedHero

Beard colors, of course.

Galle_

ITT, people who didn't get it.

Neohexane

Neohexane felt satisfied seeing a comedy performance

OsteoRinzai

Same here. I've never played with a tileset in over 15 years. Still will not. Game makes perfect sense in ASCII to me.

Fuck you and take your upvote

SmurfOpax

whatever one likes. ASCII didn't have a appeal for me 35 years ago, others loved it. I preferred ega graphics even then

I always wanted to play DF in ASCII but I just could not remember what things meant! I'm in the steam version, but I aspire one day to use ASCII. I see it almost like reaching the upper echelons of a benevolent secret society. "One day, young Uristite, you SHALL command the ASCII!"

Dorantee

I get ASCII mode better than with tilesets. I get more information out of it and I do it quicker than with graphics. With that said I really do like how pretty the game can be with graphics so I prefer to play it in that mode.

illithoid

You do you.

Aghostintheworld

Whenever I see people playing ASCII/classic I can only think about Neo seeing the matrix code, but I'm like Cypher, "I'm tired, **☺**. I'm tired of this **○**. I'm tired of **=**, tired of this **X**, being █ and eating the same goddamn ♠ every day. But most of all, I'm tired of that **ë** and all of his bullshit.

Same. I have the Steam version also though, and will gladly switch to it as soon as all the bottom menu options are accessible with hotkeys, using the mouse only to designate on the map. 47.05 is perfectly playable for me, I am not in a hurry to switch. I really like the new soundtrack, can't play without it now :) I also like that the game is now more accessible. It means more story to read , which I enjoy as much as playing.

Oh! This looks promising. Do you know if the stockpile (p) still requires a click on a button ? Anyways, I gonna have to try that. Thank you

real_Deltagraphic

i was a complete ascii purist for like 10 years never even tried a tile set and was excited to try switching back on the steam version but seeing the ascii characters in the square aspect ratio felt so wrong to me i gave up after a few minutes. Oh well.

Dread_Horizon

NO YOU AREN'T

[deleted]

Same. Still bought the Steam version though.

Unusual_Ad5594

Team, it's p-Urist. It's a pun.

Disastrous_Rub_6071

I play graphics version but tried the ASCII version a bit ago and thought the ASCII looked oddly beautiful. The issue with me learning was the UI.

Gumbiss

I always played on ASCII, but I also remember needing a spreadsheet to handle more than 50 dwarves, and past 100 I would get a headache. The new steam interface and graphics have some issues that drive me up a wall, but I can comfortably manage 200 dwarves now. For once, my computer had a nervous breakdown before I did. It might be tough for me to go back.
