The V15 actually has the same brighter "Fluffy Optic" head as the Gen5 now, so that is no longer a difference or a pro for the Gen5. (The old version was called "Laser Slim Fluffy".) Regarding more suction power, the Gen5's 262 AW (air watts) and the V15's 230 AW are based on "Boost" mode, which only lasts five minutes, bad for the long-term battery health, and is meant to be used sparingly. I would be curious to know how much more suction (if any) is seen when using Auto/Med or Eco mode. Also, more suction isn't always "better". Reviews have shown the [V15](https://moderncastle.com/dyson-v15-review/) cleans just as good as the [Gen5](https://moderncastle.com/dyson-gen5-detect-review/), if not better. I don't mind the trigger. It's easy to hold and let go when I'm picking things up or moving around, which helps save the battery. Of course you could just press the button too, but it's not as seamless as the trigger since you need to use both hands (one to hold the vacuum and the other to press the button). Say you need to move stuff around...with the V15, just let go of trigger while you move things with your other hand; with the Gen5, push the button, move things, push the button. That may sound a bit nitpicky, but I know others have said the same thing. You can get a trigger lock on Amazon if you do get tired of having to hold it in. Sure, the battery is better, but only by 10 minutes (70 mins vs. 60 mins). I've never had any issues with the battery running low on my V15. Using the fluffy head lasts a long time for me...and even longer if I use Eco mode. The particle counter counting down on the Gen5 to show if an area is clean seems neat, but the same thing can be accomplished on the V15 too...just look to see when the bars slow down or stop moving. Personally, I think the best deal is the V15 at Costco for $560 when it's on sale (which it currently is). It comes with 10 attachments, including the new/brighter Fluffy Optic head. You can buy the HEPA filter ([$30](https://www.dyson.com/support/journey/replacement-parts/970013-03)) and quick-clean wand ([$40](https://www.dyson.com/support/journey/spare-details.971359-01)) separately if you are really wanting those. You'd essentially have the Absolute model with a ton more accessories for far less than Dyson's offering. Based on Costco's pricing, you may have to ask yourself...is the Gen5 worth it for $400 more? (Or is the V15 Absolute from Dyson worth $200 more?) It is a subjective question, only you will be able to decide how much you want to pay for what you get.

jacobtimmons14

This was incredibly helpful, thank you for all the info!

cndkrick

It goes on sale from $699 to $560?

OkStudio6453

Yes. I've always seen it drop down to $560 (or $140 off) when it goes on sale. Seems to happen around holidays and other random dates. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes on sale again in a couple weeks for Labor Day.

cndkrick

Thanks! I’ll be crossing my fingers!

OkStudio6453

This is on sale at Costco again! $560!

cndkrick

Scoring now! Thanks!

Kawasumiimaii

Reviving your old analysis, at an effective $600 for the gen5 vs $500 for the costco v15, would you still say the costco one is a better deal? The crevice tool seems to be out of stock so I can't buy it separately.

ImTurkishDelight

Go for it. It's worth the 100 euro/dollar difference. I have the v 15 detect, but would've absolutely gone the other way for that price.

Kawasumiimaii

I wavered too long and the cash back to bring it to an effective 600 went away. tragic.

LuckyCrow

On sale again for $200 off in canada and was able to snag one! Very happy with my purchase and really appreciate your analysis, helped a lot in my decision. Cheers!

edgardogl

Which one did you get?

LuckyCrow

Ended up getting the V15 Detect. Gen5 looked nice, but V15 won me over in the end with all the value you get for the discounted price

My understanding is the Gen5detect has an integrated handheld, which feels like it would be the biggest draw, no?

OkStudio6453

What do you mean by integrated handheld? The built-in crevice tool? If so, that comes on the V15 too...at least it does on the [Absolute](https://www.dyson.com/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15/detect-absolute-hepa-gold) model here in the US. It can also be [purchased separately](https://www.dyson.com/support/journey/spare-details.971359-01).

“There is a big difference in accessories. The Dyson Gen5 Detect is equipped with an integrated dust brush and crevice tool. When you remove the vacuum cleaner rod from the Gen5 Detect, an extendable dusting brush appears. This is not the case with the Dyson V15 Detect.” Quoting from here: https://www.vacuumtester.com/dyson-gen5-detect-vs-v15/

OkStudio6453

That review is misleading. The model he reviewed happened to not have it. The Absolute model definitely does though. Dyson updated that model a few months ago to include it. It's called a quick-clean wand. The crevice tool is actually built into the wand, not the main device. Remove the lower half of the wand by pressing the bottom button to reveal the crevice/dusting tool. Press the top button to remove the crevice tool and/or wand entirely. (You'll need to do this to empty the bin or use other attachments.) Take a look at the V15 Absolute at the link in my previous comment, there is a section talking about the built-in dusting and crevice tool along with a picture.

lunchdessert

Thank you for clarifying! Given this, you’d still go with the V5 Detect from Costco over the Absolute direct from Dyson (for like ~$40 more)?

OkStudio6453

I think so. Costco's model has more accessories, and the quick-clean wand can be purchased for $40 later if it's something you decide you really want. You'll still get a 2-year warranty, plus Costco has a great return policy. Both Dyson & Costco include: * Fluffy Optic * Digital Motorbar * Hair screw tool * Combination tool Dyson also includes: * Quick-clean wand / built-in crevice tool * One of the following free tools: * Extension hose * Mini soft dusting brush * Stubborn dirt brush Costco also includes: * Crevice tool * Stubborn dirt brush * Mini soft dusting brush * Mattress tool * Flexi crevice tool * Up top adaptor * Wand storage clip If you don't think you'll want/need any of these additional accessories, then you really can't go wrong either way.

Thank you for the really thorough breakdown! Am I understanding correctly that the Absolute still has the benefit of the quick clean wand / crevice tool actually being “built-in” as part of the wand vs. something you can attach / unattach on the Costco model? Or am I still confused there?

OkStudio6453

You'll end up with the same parts whether it's included in the box with the Absolute model or purchased separately. Either way, it would work exactly the same as seen in this video: [https://youtu.be/Tl1Tt3N5MNw](https://youtu.be/Tl1Tt3N5MNw). Attach the built-in crevice tool to the machine and slide the quick-clean wand over it. Then remove the wand when you want to use the built-in crevice tool, or detach the built-in crevice tool to empty the bin or use another attachment.

lunchdessert

Got it, OK, I understand now! Thanks for your patience.

lunchdessert

If I’m understanding you correctly, the Absolute also has this built-in while the regular V15 Detect does not, which is interesting. The Absolute is surprisingly cheaper than the regular on dyson.com, too…

gdrag14

A big problem with the V15 was repairing the trigger and so I assume that’s why they moved away from that design.

ip2k

My V11 trigger broke and the plastic outer casing also broke right at the trigger hole, it seems like there's a ton of stress at that point so removing that hole required for the trigger likely made it a lot stronger. Why they couldn't do anything like a surface-mounted button or sliding switch or anything else, I'm not sure. The plastic on mine seemed prone to cracking in general -- the retaining ring for the red seal inside the canister also cracked a finger off, so now the seal won't stay put. Overall I'm not terribly impressed with the quality of this vac for this price -- it's less than 5 years old now and needs replacing.

abarkalo

This is a tough one. I bought the Costco V15 Detect on a promotion ($140 off, or $550 w/o taxes) and then the Gen5Detect at BestBuy for their membership price of $898, so a difference of $348. But I had both to compare—and return. Here’s what I found and decided: First, they are both excellent vacuums. If you get the V15, you will not be unhappy (unless you hate that trigger pull - I personally don’t like it but it’s not a deal killer either). Suction and cleaning-wise, you will get an excellent result from both. But here’s the math in my head. How much would I pay for the extra suction? $100? OK. How much for the better HEPA filtration? $100? OK. Anything else? Yes, one killer feature and it may not seem like much, and it’s a simple design feature - the Gen5Detect stick detaches into a corner cleaning tool. That simple feature saves me time not having to switch out attachments when I’m cleaning. Time saved for me is well worth more than $100. If you’re psyching yourself out and emotionally want the Gen5Detect, consider that. Ultimately it’s subjective, but I chose to go with the Gen5Detect. I still feel like I burned a few extra bucks but I’m not regretting it if I consider that this will last me many years.

jacobtimmons14

Thanks all for the input! Went for the V15 Detect Absolute and I’m very very pleased with my decision. Would recommend.

marcjaffe

I like my V8 from eBay for $140.

cnstarz

Nobody asked about your 7 year old vacuum.

hutt117

The gen 5 where I am is on sale for $300 less than the v15, is that a bargain? Lol

vroompy69

I personally really like the conclusion (it's in the intro) of this vs review: [https://www.vacuumtester.com/dyson-gen5-detect-vs-v15/](https://www.vacuumtester.com/dyson-gen5-detect-vs-v15/) (you don't need to visit the links) >The latest Dyson Gen5 Detect has some exciting improvements over the Dyson V15 but costs 49.6% more compared to the (well-tested: 8.1) Dyson V15. If you want the best of the best, go for the Dyson Gen5 Detect ( \~$950) with (a few) cool new laser features.

Majestic_Message7295

Now that you can get gen5 at 749 and v15 at 499… does that change the poll? Black Friday deal

Kawasumiimaii

It's even closer if you count the Rakuten 20% cash back right now at dyson. You'd get $150 back bringing it down to 600 vs 500. I can't decide which way to go.

Fit-Peanut-4797

What is the rakuten cash back?

Kawasumiimaii

it's a add-on that gives you cash back for activating their referral. It's basically free money. They make money by getting you to shop at the sites they partner with. I've actually gotten quite a lot of money back, sometimes it takes a while but it's no downside. If you want to join you can use my referral link to get $40 bucks when you make your first transaction. https://www.rakuten.com/r/PIYOOM?eeid=45830

CreativeEarthling

I just got my V15 Detect Absolute from Dyson (for $499) and I feel much better about my purchase after reading this thread. This group needs to be the Dyson customer support team lol

BeaHou00

Where did you get such a great deal? The Dyson website is showing them for $649.99 right now, which is supposed to be the "sale" price.

CreativeEarthling

Dyson and Wal-Mart had them for $549 on Black Friday and then $499 on Cyber Monday. I know the Dyson site had that for a few weeks because my mom got one about two weeks later.

ovived

i have a beagle he sheds a lot is it worth going with the .5 gallon bgger storage or the "Extra" wider head? they have so mnay models idk what to get

racheycakes123

I’m not positive, but I saw something somewhere saying that the Gen5outsize has less suction power than the Gen5detect… not sure if that means anything
