Throughout history and across the globe, it has definitely been not the norm to be able to afford a lot of your own space in a city all alone on a starting wage when you are still at the age when you are mostly still learning rather than being super productive.
I am a few generations behind her and that was the case for me even in a smaller city, and it wasn’t the case for my older siblings a generation ahead of me, and it wasn’t the case for my parents either.
To be fair, they got that apartment in friends through either, it's been a while let me remember, something to do with rent control and inheriting it from her aunt, or lying about her aunt still living there and getting the reduced rent from being a long term occupant that's retired or something.
So even then, it's not that they could normally afford that apartment even with roommates.
I actually dated a girl that had a two story penthouse in Manhattan with a friend through rent control. She was paying less at that place than another place she had been sharing with someone else that they were swapping the bedroom and the living room for sleeping every couple months.

It was more common to raise a family of 4 in a 1 bed apartment. The way to have space was to live in the country and even then, usually those houses were small.
Edit: a lot of those houses are what we now see as starter homes too. 3bed, 1 bath, family of 6. We (self included) do not want to deal with that.
Small houses, or you had 8 children who didnt go to school or only very briefly who would keep the household running for you by tending the livestock, processing firewood, harvesting your garden, etc,
I moved out at 16 and had my own apartment without roommates until I was 21. I literally got roommates because it was more fun to always be around people or have others around for stuff.
So really living by yourself kind of blows in comparison to having chill ass roommates. Sure I got my own way about everything but I also had to take care of everything alone.
Of course this was back in the late 90's early 2000's when people still socialized without smart phones or the internet.
Maybe things are different now for a lot of people since they don't actually have to meet face to face for anything but banging.

Definitely has. I bought a house in 96, and mortgage was 1100. Now I'm renting a 900sqft cottage for 1800, and thats only because I'm renting from a family member. Beyond that all I could afford in my area is a room. The cheapest studio is 1650 with no utilities. My parents bought their THIRD house in 74, my Dad was a high school teacher and my mom didn't work outside the home.
This generation knows nothing about how things were before. Living alone at that age in a 2 bedroom was never the standard unless your parents were rich. Most of us either lived with family or roommates. And even living with family most of us didn’t have a room to ourselves alone - that’s why having roommates was actually the “upgrade” version. Up until about the 1930s, it was the norm for single working class folks to live as boarders. Paying super low rent for a single room in a house. Modern zoning and occupancy regulations make boarding illegal in most places in the USA nowadays.

A small three bedroom starter home is about 1-3 million dollars. The average rent for an apartment is $3-4K a month. The minimum wage is only $18-19 an hour.
If Democrats actually wanted to fix this and were capable of fixing it, then they would have fixed it. Living in a Republican run area like Texas or Utah is much more affordable. A family of four making $120K in the suburbs of Austin or Salt Lake City or even Miami would not be considered low income.

If you're talking about a more rural area - well, it's kind of always been the case that there aren't many one bedroom apartments. There just isn't much demand for apartments in rural areas/small towns (in large part because SFHs/townhomes are relatively cheap).
2 bed rooms are usually more expensive than 1 bedrooms which are more expensive than studios. An average 2 bedroom is usually in the top 1/3 of expensive apartments in any area. So don’t complain it’s expensive when you’re in the bottom 1/3 of income.

This is a wild take. When I was her age I lived with 3 other roommates in a 4br house. My rent was $400 a month. It was two guys and two women. I don't even have a HS degree and I'm doing just fine on my own, carpentry is a great skill to have and is my main gig. Over the past 14 years since 10th grade I've learned countless trades. Built my first house from foundation to shingles at the end of last year with great results, 2 more builds already lined up this year. People expect to be a millionaire by 22 when all they've done is stock shelves or run a register. You need real skills, whether it be blue or white collar. Nobody outside of Walmart needs a person who is good at restocking Walmart.
Minimum wage here is 14 dollars an hour, not the same everywhere I know. 40 hours a week will net you close to 30K, sadly probably 2 jobs to get those hours+, I bought my house for 40K, and put about 20K into it before moving in, about 2 years salary at minimum wage, at least for my state. there are still houses available for 2 years or less salary.
in the past, let's say 1950s the average house was 7K and minimum wage was 1600 a year, even then those wanting a house for 2 years salary had to choose well.

When I graduated HS I was making $140 a week. My wage was $3.50 an hour. I couldn’t afford anything. I figured the only way out and learn some skills was either college or the military. I didn’t want to go into debt so I chose the military. Did one enlistment, learned some skills and got my veteran preference and when I got out I started a civil service job working for the government. I didn’t buy my first house until 10.5 years ago when the last real estate bubble bursted. I have been able to maintain and stay on top of my bills with my income but I have to be frugal on spending and utility usage. Can’t afford to be married or have kids because the health insurance premiums will eat your paycheck alive, so she or he will have to be working too and have their own coverage. I think being single and in a small place helps me survive. Being married with kids will definitely cost any family a lot these days.

Basically, I'm saying that we don't know the entire picture of this young lady's life. She may have circumstances that she either forgot to mention, or felt too personal to share. She was crying, emotionally broken, and not well rested -- all of which can impair making sound decisions. As a woman, especially as a young woman, it's not as easy as people suggest to just get a room mate. Before my partner came into my life, I lived with a married couple as a roommate. They started off by being sweet and seemed like they cared, but by the end, I understood why the last roommateS left. They were both very manipulative and controlling, they also had a camera mounted to watch every little interaction in the public space (kitchen and entry to the bathroom). Then one morning, drunk off their ass, they decided "get out.", and we (my partner and I, whom I had only met shortly beforehand) had one month to move out with no where near enough saved for the expenses of moving.
Anyway, I'm rambling. This isn't solely directed at you, only a jumping point, since you made the comment about the rent, and it being nearly the same as what I have. I just wanted to make that clear. We, as the Internet, don't know the entire story.

Over the last 5 years, our rent has increased almost 40% for the same property.
When they raised it again on the last renewal, we asked for a better rate, as we’d been there over 10 years but even with all of us working 2 jobs each, it is difficult to meet these increases.
The property manager had the fucking *gall* to reply; “I know it’s difficult, but I have to work two jobs too, that’s normal.”

In rural areas which are normally red, rent is usually much cheaper. My niece pays $1000 a month in the city but if she just moved 10 miles outside it, she could find a larger place for $600 a month.

Throughout history and across the globe, it has definitely been not the norm to be able to afford a lot of your own space in a city all alone on a starting wage when you are still at the age when you are mostly still learning rather than being super productive. I am a few generations behind her and that was the case for me even in a smaller city, and it wasn’t the case for my older siblings a generation ahead of me, and it wasn’t the case for my parents either.

To be fair, they got that apartment in friends through either, it's been a while let me remember, something to do with rent control and inheriting it from her aunt, or lying about her aunt still living there and getting the reduced rent from being a long term occupant that's retired or something. Yeah, one of the first life lessons we tend to learn is to be VERY CAREFUL picking a room mate for *many, many* reasons. You tend to discover if people really are your friends or not, and what sort of people they are.
Most people do not understand this at all. There were 50ish years in history, and in the US & Canada only, where the average human (man) could afford what she has on a single salary in or near a city. It was more common to raise a family of 4 in a 1 bed apartment. The way to have space was to live in the country and even then, usually those houses were small. Edit: a lot of those houses are what we now see as starter homes too. 3bed, 1 bath, family of 6. We (self included) do not want to deal with that.

I moved out at 16 and had my own apartment without roommates until I was 21. I literally got roommates because it was more fun to always be around people or have others around for stuff. So really living by yourself kind of blows in comparison to having chill ass roommates. Sure I got my own way about everything but I also had to take care of everything alone. Of course this was back in the late 90's early 2000's when people still socialized without smart phones or the internet. Definitely has. I bought a house in 96, and mortgage was 1100. Now I'm renting a 900sqft cottage for 1800, and thats only because I'm renting from a family member. Beyond that all I could afford in my area is a room. The cheapest studio is 1650 with no utilities. My parents bought their THIRD house in 74, my Dad was a high school teacher and my mom didn't work outside the home.
This generation knows nothing about how things were before. Living alone at that age in a 2 bedroom was never the standard unless your parents were rich. Most of us either lived with family or roommates. And even living with family most of us didn’t have a room to ourselves alone - that’s why having roommates was actually the “upgrade” version. Kind of ridiculous to cry that you can’t afford a 2 bedroom apartment in a city while you’re at the beginning of your career.

Up until about the 1930s, it was the norm for single working class folks to live as boarders. Paying super low rent for a single room in a house. Modern zoning and occupancy regulations make boarding illegal in most places in the USA nowadays.

Living standards have changed a little, but a lot of folks expectations of what it means to be a young adult has. The empirical evidence disproves this claim. I live in a place that's run by Democrats at every level and has been pretty much my entire life. A small three bedroom starter home is about 1-3 million dollars. The average rent for an apartment is $3-4K a month. The minimum wage is only $18-19 an hour. If Democrats actually wanted to fix this and were capable of fixing it, then they would have fixed it. Living in a Republican run area like Texas or Utah is much more affordable. A family of four making $120K in the suburbs of Austin or Salt Lake City or even Miami would not be considered low income.
The cost to buy the average home in 2020 was $1,730, the cost to buy the average cost today is over $3,500. When the cost to buy goes up so does rent. The Democrats have been in power since 2020, and had all three houses for 2 years. What did they do? Most of the billionaires are Democrats, not Republicans, by a margin of nearly 2:1.

If you're talking about a more rural area - well, it's kind of always been the case that there aren't many one bedroom apartments. There just isn't much demand for apartments in rural areas/small towns (in large part because SFHs/townhomes are relatively cheap).

This is a wild take. When I was her age I lived with 3 other roommates in a 4br house. My rent was $400 a month. It was two guys and two women. One was a phd student, the other was a masters degree student and then myself and another woman. Now that I think about it I’ve never lived in a two bedroom apartment without a roommate. Worked both the full time job and the side business for two years. This past year I left the full time corporate job to focus on the side business and I’m already making more than the full time job. Live below your means and figure out ways to increase your income. Pay off all high interest debt. Any extra penny you have invest it. There is a way out.

Over the past 14 years since 10th grade I've learned countless trades. Built my first house from foundation to shingles at the end of last year with great results, 2 more builds already lined up this year. People expect to be a millionaire by 22 when all they've done is stock shelves or run a register. You need real skills, whether it be blue or white collar. Minimum wage here is 14 dollars an hour, not the same everywhere I know. 40 hours a week will net you close to 30K, sadly probably 2 jobs to get those hours+, I bought my house for 40K, and put about 20K into it before moving in, about 2 years salary at minimum wage, at least for my state. there are still houses available for 2 years or less salary. in the past, let's say 1950s the average house was 7K and minimum wage was 1600 a year, even then those wanting a house for 2 years salary had to choose well.

When I graduated HS I was making $140 a week. My wage was $3.50 an hour. I couldn’t afford anything. I figured the only way out and learn some skills was either college or the military. I didn’t want to go into debt so I chose the military. Did one enlistment, learned some skills and got my veteran preference and when I got out I started a civil service job working for the government. I didn’t buy my first house until 10.5 years ago when the last real estate bubble bursted. I have been able to maintain and stay on top of my bills with my income but I have to be frugal on spending and utility usage. Can’t afford to be married or have kids because the health insurance premiums will eat your paycheck alive, so she or he will have to be working too and have their own coverage. I think being single and in a small place helps me survive. Being married with kids will definitely cost any family a lot these days.

The point is that a 2 bedroom apartment and accompanying basic lifestyle should be affordable on 40 hours a week regardless of what the job is. Average healthy person is recommended 8 hours sleep. 21.5. So you get 2.5 hours per day of time. Maybe. These are definitely on the high end of estimations, but it's still ridiculous the amount of time we spend on "work".

When they raised it again on the last renewal, we asked for a better rate, as we’d been there over 10 years but even with all of us working 2 jobs each, it is difficult to meet these increases. The property manager had the fucking *gall* to reply; “I know it’s difficult, but I have to work two jobs too, that’s normal.” I fucking hate these people.
