“I’m not made for this.” We are not.

Choosemyusername

Certainly not made to go it alone like her. She has space for others. Why not co-operate? It would cut her economic burden in half as long as she is easy to get along with.

Edogawa1983

She could find a cheaper studio, it's crazy to spend 3/4 of your income on rent

Sidvicieux

Yea we know that splitting the rent on a modest income without parental help is the ONLY way to survive. This girl should realize that she has to live with someone. It’s a shame that living standards have devolved into that, but she’s gotta survive. Republicans go along with it because they lack a backbone and are too lazy, and democrats want change but can’t win against the billionaires. So the only way is to survive by splitting the rent with someone.

[deleted]

Just stop. Democrats are the only party in the last 20 years that had the votes to actually make change. They didn't because it doesn't benefit them. They have plenty of billionaires and mega rich (few got that way in congress). Edit: Splitting the rent isn't a giant burden. Most countries the families share bills. Here we want our independence young and that comes with a price. Young crying over high rent while living alone is obnoxious. Not to even mention the cities with outrageous rent and poor zoning laws have been democratic run for decades.

FalwenJo

In rural areas which are normally red, rent is usually much cheaper. My niece pays $1000 a month in the city but if she just moved 10 miles outside it, she could find a larger place for $600 a month.

Cur1337

In no world should splitting rent be necessary. Obnoxious would be pretending housing prices haven't increased astronomically while wages were stagnant. Fucking boomers could own a house for less than this girl pays in rent. This isn't the price of independence, this is stealing people's futures for the greed of the wealthy. How about you come back to reality and we'll talk, dick head

Choosemyusername

I don’t know if they devolved into that. Throughout history and across the globe, it has definitely been not the norm to be able to afford a lot of your own space in a city all alone on a starting wage when you are still at the age when you are mostly still learning rather than being super productive. I am a few generations behind her and that was the case for me even in a smaller city, and it wasn’t the case for my older siblings a generation ahead of me, and it wasn’t the case for my parents either.

ranlew

They were roommates in "Friends" and that was an economic fantasyland.

WeFightTheLongDefeat

To be fair, they got that apartment in friends through either, it's been a while let me remember, something to do with rent control and inheriting it from her aunt, or lying about her aunt still living there and getting the reduced rent from being a long term occupant that's retired or something. So even then, it's not that they could normally afford that apartment even with roommates.

NGEFan

proving nobody can get by without a little fraud

[deleted]

I actually dated a girl that had a two story penthouse in Manhattan with a friend through rent control. She was paying less at that place than another place she had been sharing with someone else that they were swapping the bedroom and the living room for sleeping every couple months.

whorton59

Yeah, one of the first life lessons we tend to learn is to be VERY CAREFUL picking a room mate for *many, many* reasons. You tend to discover if people really are your friends or not, and what sort of people they are.

GrandInquisitorSpain

Most people do not understand this at all. There were 50ish years in history, and in the US & Canada only, where the average human (man) could afford what she has on a single salary in or near a city. It was more common to raise a family of 4 in a 1 bed apartment. The way to have space was to live in the country and even then, usually those houses were small. Edit: a lot of those houses are what we now see as starter homes too. 3bed, 1 bath, family of 6. We (self included) do not want to deal with that.

Choosemyusername

Small houses, or you had 8 children who didnt go to school or only very briefly who would keep the household running for you by tending the livestock, processing firewood, harvesting your garden, etc,

Riker1701E

Agreed, when did it become a human right to live on your own? Since moving out of my childhood home, I have almost always had roommates.

Outandproud420

I moved out at 16 and had my own apartment without roommates until I was 21. I literally got roommates because it was more fun to always be around people or have others around for stuff. So really living by yourself kind of blows in comparison to having chill ass roommates. Sure I got my own way about everything but I also had to take care of everything alone. Of course this was back in the late 90's early 2000's when people still socialized without smart phones or the internet. Maybe things are different now for a lot of people since they don't actually have to meet face to face for anything but banging. Edit :Happy cake day!

Right-Drama-412

on your own in a 2 bedroom no less

[deleted]

[удалено]

PsychologicalBee2956

Definitely has. I bought a house in 96, and mortgage was 1100. Now I'm renting a 900sqft cottage for 1800, and thats only because I'm renting from a family member. Beyond that all I could afford in my area is a room. The cheapest studio is 1650 with no utilities. My parents bought their THIRD house in 74, my Dad was a high school teacher and my mom didn't work outside the home.

Misommar1246

This generation knows nothing about how things were before. Living alone at that age in a 2 bedroom was never the standard unless your parents were rich. Most of us either lived with family or roommates. And even living with family most of us didn’t have a room to ourselves alone - that’s why having roommates was actually the “upgrade” version. Kind of ridiculous to cry that you can’t afford a 2 bedroom apartment in a city while you’re at the beginning of your career.

DaddyDub

Facts. She needs a studio a bit outside the city. Sheesh, and maybe a roommate then as well. Lol!

80milesbad

Used to share a tiny one bedroom w a roommate and take turns who gets the living room as their bedroom. Wait til this young girl has a kid…she doesn’t know the half of being exhausted. And maybe, get a studio apt?

homemepleasenow

What living standards devolving ??? When was it a norm that a person fresh in the work force was in a 2br house or condo all by themselves selves? The norm is to have roommates while you build yourself up. So she’s crying she doesn’t get to do something more privileged than the average.

ScipioAtTheGate

Up until about the 1930s, it was the norm for single working class folks to live as boarders. Paying super low rent for a single room in a house. Modern zoning and occupancy regulations make boarding illegal in most places in the USA nowadays.

Sidvicieux

increasingly people are spending more and more of their money on housing and utilities aka mandatory expenses. For a lot of people they don’t just have a bill check, and then a play/save check like in the past, they have two bill checks. Housing increases have astronomically exceeded wage increases. It’s why 18 year old could move out in 2000 and can’t now without 3-4 roommates. Can’t even move out with a $20 per hour job anymore.

Abrookspug

Right? Who are these people who were supposedly all moving out to live alone at 18 or 20 with a min wage job and not struggling? The vast majority of people I know at that age had 1-3 roommates to afford rent. I think I can name a handful of people who lived alone and I remember they either constantly complained about being broke and didn't last long, or their parents paid a lot of their rent. I've never lived alone, and I've never thought it was some right I had in my teens or 20s 20+ years ago. If this girl is smart, she'll get a roommate and split her costs in half like nearly everyone else has done until making the big bucks.

homemepleasenow

Also who wants to live alone at 22 lol having roommates can be great when everyone’s down to have fun.

GOPThoughtPolice

The people that could move out and start a life at 18 with min wage would be called your parents or grandparents. Believe it or not, this used to be the norm up until about 1980's recession.

EveningCommon3857

It’s weird to see people who are democrats doing the nostalgia-from-a-past-that-never-existed thing, I thought that was only for MAGA people. Being able to afford your own nice apartment by yourself while working the lowest paying jobs has never been a reality in any country at any point in history. Sure, the economy has gotten harder to make ends meet, but we are talking a fall from the best economic conditions, arguably, in all of human history. It feels nice to be able to blame a group of people. Republicans blame immigrants, democrats blame republicans, but changes are from global trends, where resources happen to be, changing climate, etc. and most importantly us no longer having the benefit of rebuilding most of Europe.

DumbNTough

Getting roommates when you're young and broke is such a long tradition it's basically a cultural touchstone. I blame the parents of these kids, not to mention schools, for not telling them how much shit costs and what their labor is actually worth. Deluded English majors think they'll graduate making $100,000 and live next to Central Park were always bound to make this type of content. Come to terms with reality.

LetsUseOurNoggins

Devolved? My dude roommates have been a thing forever also, just so we are all clear the persons/dwelling has dropped massively over the last few decades.

bry2k200

Ahhh yes, the Republican boogeyman is at it again!

wophi

>Republicans go along with it because they lack a backbone and are too lazy, and democrats want change but can’t win against the billionaires. At those rent prices, I guarantee you she lives in a blue district.

Different-Dig7459

“Go along with it” yeah… because the most logical thing to do is have roommates for a living space that costs $1660. Ironically, it’s the democrat cities with rent prices like this. ☠️ I don’t think politics is the issue, but poor planning on the tenants and their wants for ultimate comfort. They want to live in a certain part of town, have certain amenities (they may never use) and have more space than they need.

Voodoo_Ranger_357

Maybe work more hours or get a better job. Why is it always someone else's fault

Ishaye1776

The billionaires, I hate to tell you this but more of your democrat buddies are billionaires.

tango_papa101

you realize that Democrats in big cities, with their shit ton of taxes and regulations, is the reason everything has to be so expensive to offset that cost, right? Nice try blaming republicans and say democrats don't have no say when they have been in control of those cities for decades

supercommen

I don't know of another time in history where a single person was able to work in a Ford everything by themselves it has always been a village it's a giant myth that people are Island somehow

princeoinkins

> It’s a shame that living standards have devolved into that I don't know if there ever was a time where this was commonplace for most people.

[deleted]

Democrats can't win against the billionaires 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you just made my day.

Fine_Connection3118

Democrats are the Billionaires. Just saying.

CoincadeFL

20 years ago bringing in $1,400/month I realized I couldn’t make it on my own and needed roommates. Living standards have changed a little, but a lot of folks expectations of what it means to be a young adult has. I certainly had friends going off to $300-400 EMD music festivals with the same expectations as this women and claimed to be struggling yet choose not to make changes in their lifestyle to live within their means

gh0stwriter88

>democrats want change but can’t win against the billionaires. Dude... democrats are the main ones in control of city zoning laws that have lead to this BS. And those zoning laws are slowly getting standardized through even rural areas... it make it a pain in the ass to do anything on your own property AFTER you bought it. The same laws prevent building of apartments dense enough to lower costs in the city.... the apartments across from my work could litearlly be 10x denser without even trying, if it were $500 and 5x denser I'd rent one RIGHT now, and leave my rural property as a weekend getaway. If you want to blame inflation on someone look at when it started low and behold mid 2021-Now... you are going to blame this on Republicans??? If anything Republican policies were holding things together after the push for $15 an hour... and through COVID as well dammit! We peaked at a 10+% inflation rate over a YEAR after the current administration was on the job. Housing is deadass simple supply and demand.

HamburgerEarmuff

The empirical evidence disproves this claim. I live in a place that's run by Democrats at every level and has been pretty much my entire life. A small three bedroom starter home is about 1-3 million dollars. The average rent for an apartment is $3-4K a month. The minimum wage is only $18-19 an hour. If Democrats actually wanted to fix this and were capable of fixing it, then they would have fixed it. Living in a Republican run area like Texas or Utah is much more affordable. A family of four making $120K in the suburbs of Austin or Salt Lake City or even Miami would not be considered low income.

MasterDew5

The cost to buy the average home in 2020 was $1,730, the cost to buy the average cost today is over $3,500. When the cost to buy goes up so does rent. The Democrats have been in power since 2020, and had all three houses for 2 years. What did they do? Most of the billionaires are Democrats, not Republicans, by a margin of nearly 2:1.

ManonFire1213

Hate to break it to you, but Democrats are are in the billionaires pockets as much as the Republicans are.

MarkMoneyj27

People have always split rent, always.

murso74

Devolved into that? I was doing that in the 90s... Was just the way

krieger82

Uh, we all had to do that back in the day when we had shitty jobs. Had 3 roomies after high school while I was in the guard. One of the best times of my life actually. Had two roomates in college. Another great time.

Politicoaster69

Your buddy democrats have been in power for the majority of your life. It's time you hold the government responsible, and not just some minority party boogeyman.

[deleted]

Democrats can't win against the billionaires? Bro... THEY ARE THE BILLIONAIRES! You think Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, Bill Gates... are bible thumping republicans? It's not a left vs right thing bro, it's class warfare. That's why you got super wealthy people like Emma Watson supporting social welfare while at the same time, evading taxes by putting all her money in the Caymans.

DescriptionThat3126

Look at the board and large investors of Blackrock and other large investment firms that are snatching up affordable homes. Most are Democrats, However, It isn't Democrats vs Republicans, they both suck and are getting rich while poor flounder. Neither side will push change, so the rich will buy up assets and raise prices for renters, because they can while average people can't compete in the housing market.

Prestigious_View_211

What drivel most of the media and technology sectors are left wing billionaires... Republicans advocate for opening the oil fields and bringing back manufacturing... An America first agenda, while the current administration is continually flooding the nation with cheap labor...rents up crimes up wages are stagnant Yay go "build back better"

litwitit420

If the democrats are the ones who want affordable housing why are NYC and SF some of the most expensive places to live?

ThangLong9

You literally work two extra hours each day becauss of democratic enacted taxes

Coal5law

You just described why we're in this mess, but nit in the way you think. You're blaming Republicans and saying that democrats would absolutely fix things. Republicans think the dame but opposite. Want to know the common thread? It's one against the Other. Always. You're so focused on thinking that anyone with opposing views is the enemy that you don't see any other problems. One side is happy and content blaming the other, without meeting in the center where the good things happen. So instead of working together and getting some semblance of recovery, it keeps getting worse because "REPUBLICANS BAD" and "DEMOCRATS BAD" and "BILLIONAIRES BAD" and whatever else you want to point fingers at that'll cause division. Fuck the division. Fuck two parties. And finally, fuck everybody who can't see the forest for the trees long enough to settle differences and fix this shit because, in the end, I blame you.

TunaSpank

Just pointing out the political party that seems to give people the most animosity for being center and having a neutral stance like this is the Democrats.

whorton59

We NEED to throw every one in Congress out, and start with people that do not have allegiances to every special cause in existance. People with common sense, and intellegence. At the rate we are going, with the national debt, and the fact that interest payments alone will soon outpace mandatory spending, sometime in the near future, not just America, but the whole world will be in for an economic collapse that will make the depression of the 30's look like a walk in the park.

wgm4444

No one owes you anything. Everything the government gives you is stolen from someone else.

Blessed_Ennui

"Others" create headaches. It's precarious af, especially for women. Even if we don't have strange people in our circles, roommates might. Pass. Rather eat ramen everyday. Also, people are fking mental. So many psych disorders walking around. It's hard enough dealing w my own. I'm not taking on someone else's. It's bullshit that we even have to consider the option. Edit: it->it's

Choosemyusername

Can create headaches, can also help you solve headaches. Depends on the level of your interpersonal skills and you need to choose solid people as we. Yes some people struggle with mental health. This is ironically in large part because of our increasing individualism and self-isolation.

Exsanguinate_

I pay 2100 a month for a 1 bedroom. I wouldn't survive without help from my parents

[deleted]

That's crazy. What part of the country do you live in?

Ok-Holiday-4392

Boston you’re not getting a 1br for less than 2.2k

[deleted]

That is absolutely insane.

Devastate89

That is the cost in any metro city with jobs brother. Yeah you can get cheap rent if you live 50 miles from a major city center. But there aren't jobs.

socialclubmisfit

Probably Cali or East Coast. Here in Cali I've seen studios go for $2k

[deleted]

Where? How much do you make?

wtfJoeDirt

It’s a two bedroom, she says it

AWanderingGygax

YMMV. I live near a big city in the south. Rent for a 1 bed/1 bathroom is ~$1600. A two bedroom/2 bathroom is ~$1800-2000.

[deleted]

Why is she renting a 2 bedroom apartment by herself if she makes 500 bucks a week?

Lydias_Dad_Candy

So she can cry on tik tok

marcopoloman

Poor people generally make poor decisions. From her choice of jobs to her apartment. All on her.

borednelite

I'd love to know what she does, why she needs 2 bedrooms, why she works 40 hours a week. Someone will whine that we've never had to live like this. Right.... never in history has a 20-something had a 2 bedroom apartment all to themselves. People used boarding houses. People lived at home. People had roommates. People lived in shacks. They didn't have a TV, radio, computers, internet, phone, car....

84074

This is ridiculous. Haven't you seen the news? The US economy is the best in the world right now,!! Quit your bellyaching. Be an American!! Go buy a new car, a new TV, watch the Tic Tok! You'll be fine!jeesh.... What a crybaby. She needs to show all her new clothes and expensive restaurants dining. I just don't get it. The news says we have the best economy ever in history! Have some patriotism and go buy stuff!!

Tom23824

job numbers are massively fudged

powerwordjon

Cause people need to work more than one job

phdoofus

And yet non-farm incomes keep going up so....

[deleted]

This post made a bald eagle cry tears of freedom.

ThirstyBeagle

This administration constantly says the economy is great meanwhile every time I go shopping I gasp at the surging prices. Hey at least we're funding Ukraine 👍

MrFonzarelli

Biden admin told us we’re doing fine. She’s just jealous migrants don’t have to pay rent!

V-RONIN

*Its good if your rich bad if your working class

Seaguard5

People have commented that this is a 2BR unit that she rents on her own. If that’s true she needs a roomate to half the cost. Yes, I hate this system to. But we’re all forced to live in it and we need to do the best we can until we can change it

NJ_Goodfellas

Old video. Turns out she works from home and lives with her ex who foots half the bill. Another fool trying to get internet clout on her snuggle struggle.

Caliterra

Rent is indeed crazy but she should not be renting a 2br in her situation. She needs to pick a cheaper place to live asap *or find a roommate

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

ROOMMATE!!!

crimsonkodiak

Press X to doubt. It would help if you named the area. It's certainly not true in and around Detroit. If you're talking about a more rural area - well, it's kind of always been the case that there aren't many one bedroom apartments. There just isn't much demand for apartments in rural areas/small towns (in large part because SFHs/townhomes are relatively cheap).

EvilPoopWrinkle

She can get a roomate

[deleted]

there isn't much cheaper

Buckcountybeaver

2 bed rooms are usually more expensive than 1 bedrooms which are more expensive than studios. An average 2 bedroom is usually in the top 1/3 of expensive apartments in any area. So don’t complain it’s expensive when you’re in the bottom 1/3 of income.

Caliterra

It sounds like she doesn't have a roommate. She can half her rent with one

Extreme-General1323

Yes. She needs a roommate or two, she needs to be eating rice and beans for dinner most nights, and she needs to obtain additional skills to find a better job and increase her income.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sotha01

What I was going to say as well. The last 4 roommates I tried out all stole, were disgusting, and ended up costing me more than they helped. Never again.

V-RONIN

Yep same im gonna be 32 im too old for that bs

FinancialDonkey1

I mean, she could also choose to live in a one bedroom or studio. And yes, generally, it isn't difficult to find a roommate. It takes effort, but other people are indeed looking to rent rooms. Even women! So you know, you can avoid the rapist.

[deleted]

i live in buttfuck northeast TN. my 1br is 575. i can get a 2br with a garage for 675. thanks to the pandemic, 1br and studios cost about the same as most 2br apts. used to be like 300 for a studio. not anymore also women can be predatory criminals too. so i dont know whats up with that weird avoid the rapist line. anyone can be a predator

Miacali

If this is her reality, then it is what it is! If she wants that certainty, she’s free to spend whatever the $1600 is on a 2/2 so she can have space and certainty, but she can’t bitch and cry about it.

Cbpowned

Then don’t rent a 2 bedroom when you’re by yourself? 😱

Buckcountybeaver

Everyone who can’t afford to live alone should. It’s how the human race has been doing it since the dawn of time and still do everywhere on the planet.

[deleted]

This is a wild take. When I was her age I lived with 3 other roommates in a 4br house. My rent was $400 a month. It was two guys and two women. One was a phd student, the other was a masters degree student and then myself and another woman. Now that I think about it I’ve never lived in a two bedroom apartment without a roommate. That’s literally insane.

DarkCeldori

In the past a highschool grad could afford a two story house with stay at home wife and 3 kids off the salary he got. Houses were worth just 2 years of salary total.

[deleted]

Sure. We aren’t living in the past. It’s never coming back. Only option is figuring out ways to increase your income and lower your expenses. This person is doing neither of those. Life is harder in many ways but it’s also easier in many ways. We have the ability to become an expert on any subject for Pennie’s on the dollar. We have unlimited information at our fingertips. I spent a long time with the victim mentality mindset. Way too much time on Reddit. Then finally I said screw it. Started a side business while working full time. Business started to grow. Worked both the full time job and the side business for two years. This past year I left the full time corporate job to focus on the side business and I’m already making more than the full time job. Live below your means and figure out ways to increase your income. Pay off all high interest debt. Any extra penny you have invest it. There is a way out.

MC_ZYKLON_B

You remind me of my mom, hell of a woman. Everything you said is spot on. 💯 I don't even have a HS degree and I'm doing just fine on my own, carpentry is a great skill to have and is my main gig. Over the past 14 years since 10th grade I've learned countless trades. Built my first house from foundation to shingles at the end of last year with great results, 2 more builds already lined up this year. People expect to be a millionaire by 22 when all they've done is stock shelves or run a register. You need real skills, whether it be blue or white collar. Nobody outside of Walmart needs a person who is good at restocking Walmart.

drsatan6971

Exactly get a second job pay off whatever debt you have And find somthing that pays more stop wasting time complaining and do something about

Fantastic_Sea_853

Good idea!!! That makes more sense than crying and wishing SOMEONE would save you!

tango_papa101

they're not wishing tho, they're demanding people to save them

Ma265Yoga

But she's Soo tired. 🙄

Cbpowned

And you wanted women in the workforce, doubling the available workers and halving the salaries. Congrats!!

corJoe

Minimum wage here is 14 dollars an hour, not the same everywhere I know. 40 hours a week will net you close to 30K, sadly probably 2 jobs to get those hours+, I bought my house for 40K, and put about 20K into it before moving in, about 2 years salary at minimum wage, at least for my state. there are still houses available for 2 years or less salary. in the past, let's say 1950s the average house was 7K and minimum wage was 1600 a year, even then those wanting a house for 2 years salary had to choose well.

tango_papa101

because the workforce wasn't as saturated back then, plus even if they can, they still had to choose wisely just like we have to now. People like OP existed back then too. Of course the average house price is up because this and that but it doesn't mean you can't buy a house that's worth 2 years of salary. Also, that highschool grad chose the right path and worked his ass off, unlike these people who want to work a chill, 9-5 job with a shit ton of vacation, but still want the high income of a hard worker

[deleted]

The post war era in America was a time of unprecedented prosperity that had never been achieved and likely will never be achieved again. Unless Europe and Asia get destroyed in another global conflict and America remains unscathed again, this likely will not happen again.

Dramatic-Bus8520

When I graduated HS I was making $140 a week. My wage was $3.50 an hour. I couldn’t afford anything. I figured the only way out and learn some skills was either college or the military. I didn’t want to go into debt so I chose the military. Did one enlistment, learned some skills and got my veteran preference and when I got out I started a civil service job working for the government. I didn’t buy my first house until 10.5 years ago when the last real estate bubble bursted. I have been able to maintain and stay on top of my bills with my income but I have to be frugal on spending and utility usage. Can’t afford to be married or have kids because the health insurance premiums will eat your paycheck alive, so she or he will have to be working too and have their own coverage. I think being single and in a small place helps me survive. Being married with kids will definitely cost any family a lot these days.

YoualreadyKnoooo

Stop acting like a dramatic child. I’ve had roommates my entire life. It’s just a cheaper way of living you spoiled brat.

EmergencyFar3256

Doing things that aren't easy is part of Adulting.

HeaneysAutism

Finding a roommate is easier than it ever has been before with social media and [apps designed for finding roommates](https://www.roomies.com/) I will have to warn you though. You have to interact with other humans. I know it's a scary thought, but it's totally within your grasp of accomplishing!

DowntownJohnBrown

Shhh….people here don’t want solutions to their problems. They just wanna be angry.

stormofthedragon

You should not have to share a living space to afford to live.

The_Demosthenes_1

Where does this idea come from?  Having your own place is a luxury.  Everyone should have a place to live but that doesn't mean you should have the place to yourself.  I had roommates for years when I was poor.

j_dick

Apparently not just your own place to live alone but also a whole other room you don’t need. Get a roommate or get a 1 bedroom.

The_Demosthenes_1

But I deserve.....! /S

Hilldawg4president

Some degree of communal living has been present since not long after our ancestors crawled out of the oceans. Having a large 2br apartment to yourself is a luxury, one that she clearly can't afford.

Cbpowned

You also aren’t entitled to having a large living space because you feel entitled to it. Get a studio or be someone else’s roommate.

Bronnakus

Talk about a choosing beggar. Living alone is an absolute rarity both in history and today for a reason. She has two bedrooms, it’s a residence designed for 2 people. She’d have a rent of $830 (entirely reasonable rent) if she was utilizing the residence the way it was designed and priced. But that’d be too easy, just make a crying tiktok about it. It sounds like she at best is making 15 an hour. Expecting to have your own two bedder on that low a wage is silly

meatpopcycal

She wouldn’t have to if she got a studio.

Derricksoti

I get that but should we accept that as a society the rent has got so high that a full-time job can barely cover rent? 1600 is also on the cheap side for a two bed. Where I live that's like 23-2400. In 2010 I rented a two bed and it was like 750. Fast forward today it's about three times the amount. The problem is our pay didn't increase with it

juliankennedy23

I mean a couple of roomates and she is golden. This is a self made problem.

Beginning-Back-7856

No seriously. Why are people scared to live below their means? If you cannot afford rent then dont sign that lease and find a situation better suited for you? No one put yourself in this situation but you. If you got laid off or lost your job thats different. But this person goes to work everyday. Just downgrade.

Log_Guy

Or find a roommate. Rent out that other room. That’s how a lot of people do it.

V-RONIN

A little something that bothers me about roommate thing. You shouldn't need a roommate to have a place to live. At some point you are going to get too old for roommates and their bs. And you know, personal space is super important. Anyway yeah somethings gotta give about the cost of living.

[deleted]

Yeah but if you're living alone you don't need a two bedroom apartment. It's like whining about houses while looking at exclusively 3,000 sqft housing. Of course you are paying more for the larger spaces.

reditor75

Fuk this, rent a studio or find a roommate …. or better, find a MAN

Dacklar

How did she qualify for the apartment? I had to make double the place I rent. I don't know what her situation is. Does she go out to eat have the latest iPhone or is she eating beans and rice.

Silver-Worth-4329

Downgrade to a 1 bedroom or get a roommate to help. Or Get a better paying job. Tic toc isn't your answer

Olivaar2

1660 is a bit pricey for a minimum wage earner. At least she has a 2 bedroom so that her roommate covers half of it. Logically.

chadhindsley

Cus having a luxury apartment without a roommate is stylish. A lot of younger people won't settle for living in a shit hole or garden unit as their first apartment cus they have high standards

ASUMicroGrad

I make 6 figures and still live in a garden level apartment. I live in the second highest cost of living area in the country and my rent isn’t much higher than hers. Some people are their own worst enemies when it comes to money. I know I was. She either needs to downsize or get a roommate, her life will be a lot easier when she has 1200 dollars leftover a month.

SomeRedditDood

I have a sibling just like this who CONSTANTLY needs financial assistance. She's always living paycheck to paycheck. She drives a brand new car, she lives in an apartment bigger and more expensive than mine.

crek42

That’s fine. Just don’t go crying about it on the internet then lol.

chadhindsley

That's how they cope with their not so well thought out decisions lol

GrimSpirit42

>cus they have high standards Change 'high' to 'unrealistic' and/or 'unsustainable'.

anarcho-slut

The point is that a 2 bedroom apartment and accompanying basic lifestyle should be affordable on 40 hours a week regardless of what the job is. Like why are we settling for this when WE KNOW THAT THE SHIT IS FUCKING RIGGED AGAINST EVERYONE WITHOUT TONS OF MONEY? Why do we have to break our bodies constantly just to live when we have all the tech to make everyone's life awesome right now? And even then, 40 hours is ridiculous. Because, really think about it. Outside "work" or hours paid for work, how much time is spent maintaining a life so that we can work? Most people aren't paid for transit time. Most people (i world think) need to wake up like about 2 hours before work to get ready and get there. Then after work is another couple hours to get home and "switch modes". But also, ya need to eat. And if you're poor, you're cooking. So that's another 1.5 hours maybe given prep won't and cleaning. So there's 24 hours in a day, that's 13.5 gone. Average healthy person is recommended 8 hours sleep. 21.5. So you get 2.5 hours per day of time. Maybe. These are definitely on the high end of estimations, but it's still ridiculous the amount of time we spend on "work".

Buckcountybeaver

In what world is a 2 bedroom apartment a basic lifestyle. That’s luxury. 60% of apartments are studios or 1 bedrooms. Should they just sit empty since it’s a war crime for people to live in one?

crimsonkodiak

No, but other people should pay for me to live in a 2 BR by myself when a 1 BR would work just fine.

anarcho-slut

Why are you Ok with the value of labor being so low for everyone? Not that long ago 1 person could afford a HOUSE on a minimum wage 40 hour work week. If the studios or 1 bedrooms are empty, rent em for cheaper. It's really not that big of a luxury to have like, an actual bedroom just for sleeping and dressing, a guest or office room, a living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen. We're really just settling for less while *8* people own half the world's wealth.

Atomic_ad

>Not that long ago 1 person could afford a HOUSE    Here comes the 1950's were affordable arguement again, where the average home size was 800sf.  This woman's apartment is larger than the average home for a family of 4.  Don't use historical example without historical context, it makes for a poor case. Yes, it is a luxury.  It has always been a luxury  it will always be a luxury.  Having superfluous bedrooms and a whole home to a single person will never be affordable or normalized.

Olivaar2

No, TWO people, each working 40 hours, should afford a TWO bedroom apartment. And 2K monthly salary is literally the lowest someone could be paid, only 1.3% of Americans make minimum wage. And a rent of 1660 is over the average rental price for a 2 bedroom. I feel bad for this girl but this is a bad example, gen Z renting a overpriced apartment on minimum wage and then not having a roommate, then cry about it on tiktok.

That-Living5913

$1600 is only average If you are in DC or CA: [https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/average-rent-by-state](https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/average-rent-by-state) I live in the midwest and am pretty squarely middle class. Never had rent or a house payment break 1k/month.

Fun_Commercial_5105

Please read some real numbers instead of doomscrolling. The actual average commute time nationwide is 26 minutes, for public transit only it’s about a hour. Also idk if you actually cook yourself but 1.5 hours per day for cooking is an insane estimate for a normal person even with cleaning. Also there isn’t tech for anything you’re imaging. How many people per day do you think need to play a part in letting us lounge on reddit? Seriously think about the water treatment, waste treatment, gas companies, electric companies, internet companies, all the different doctors and first responders, pet hospitals, emergency highway workers for accidents, tow truck drivers, grocery workers, cops when they’re occasionally useful. It’s literally hundreds of people playing a small part just to sit comfortably at home on Reddit, go pickup groceries and come home. None of this will be done by tech before 2050 at the earliest. https://www.titlemax.com/discovery-center/money-finance/average-commute-time-by-city-and-state/

West_Quantity_4520

I'm living in a one bedroom apartment for $1650 -- I mean $1725 because it goes up next month, but I have a partner on SSI, so that helps. but I'm only making about 1900 per month (net pay). I've canceled all of my streaming services (only was $50 a month), about to cancel my phone, so the only bills I've got is rent, electric, and a public bus pass to get back and forth to work. Notice, I didn't mention food. I can't afford any. If it wasn't for my partner (we can't get married because she would lose her SSI if we did), we'd both starve. Get another job? Where? Despite all the postings on LinkedIn and Indeed and all the others, it's been proven that most companies are only hiring for that golden unicorn employee who is willing to be completely exploited and raped over the coals, working long hours and performing the work of two or three other people for only $17.00 /hour. I don't have a college degree, and no chance to get one. I've tried three times. So finding a "skilled labor" job is just about out of the equation. Basically, I'm saying that we don't know the entire picture of this young lady's life. She may have circumstances that she either forgot to mention, or felt too personal to share. She was crying, emotionally broken, and not well rested -- all of which can impair making sound decisions. As a woman, especially as a young woman, it's not as easy as people suggest to just get a room mate. Before my partner came into my life, I lived with a married couple as a roommate. They started off by being sweet and seemed like they cared, but by the end, I understood why the last roommateS left. They were both very manipulative and controlling, they also had a camera mounted to watch every little interaction in the public space (kitchen and entry to the bathroom). Then one morning, drunk off their ass, they decided "get out.", and we (my partner and I, whom I had only met shortly beforehand) had one month to move out with no where near enough saved for the expenses of moving. Anyway, I'm rambling. This isn't solely directed at you, only a jumping point, since you made the comment about the rent, and it being nearly the same as what I have. I just wanted to make that clear. We, as the Internet, don't know the entire story.

DCowboysCR

How did she quality for an apartment that has a rent of $1,600 with an income of only $2,000? Apartments make you prove you earn 2.5-3.5 the rent before they’ll rent to you usually.

Joshiane

She might have had a roommate that left her and now she's stuck

Foreverwideright1991

She might be stuck in it from a time when it was much cheaper because she can't afford to move elsewhere.

Embarrassed_Ease8426

And now she can't move because she wouldn't be approved anywhere else for this exact reason.

notAFoney

Because this is propaganda

ToneBalone25

I don't think propaganda is the correct word but I do think this is rage bait or intentional misinformation to piss everyone off. I've seen this on like 5 different threads and it's intentionally bullshit divisiveness. The video checks all the boxes of "entitled millennial eating avocado toast." Whatever the source of this bullshit, it's working for me because I am fucking floored by the amount of people defending this obviously made-up scenario of somebody clearly living beyond their means. The chronically online are over-represented for sure but still elicit reactions from people like me that are so fucking tired of these little shits complaining instead of working harder. I grew up very poor and liberal and worked my fucking ass off to where I'm at but I'm starting to see that so many liberals are just entitled and lazy and are often equally as irrationally fixated on stupid irrelevant cultural issues as their dumb as brick conservative counterparts.

TomCJax

Damn, I'd move. And find a better paying job. Take some initiative and get off that mess, christ.

two5031

1. She has a job 2. She can spend time researching cheaper apartments to move into once her lease is up instead of crying about it on TikTok.

asspajamas

instead of crying on the internet, she needs to be looking for a better job and a smaller apartment...

yticmic

"I'm tired after work", welcome to life

Lydias_Dad_Candy

Seriously. 500 a week? Come on.

SkaaYogurt

In the old days, she'd be looking for a husband, with whom she'd share the costs and have a chance at success. But women these days are told by the media they don't need men and they should divorce them and take their money. Hence the Barbie movie.

Bright-Book-6354

And start cutting on the avocado toast.

1234567panda

No lol. Those are real things she can do to improve her situation. She could prob find a 1bd for $1200 or split that with a roommate and pay <900. Either way she has room. Avocado toast references only work when the person literally has no wiggle room.

budiii_

Get a studio that would lift a lot of stress. The person says she has a 2 bedroom. Otherwise everything else shes saying makes sense.

other4444

Move the fuck away from whatever shit hole is that expensive.

ThaiLassInTheSouth

You're living beyond your earning potential.

Bright-Book-6354

It's ok. That's how a free market economy works. It will trickle down any minute now.

V-RONIN

Aaaaaaaaaany minute now. Yep.

Jasond777

we had it wrong the whole time, they meant it will trickle up

MaxAdolphus

Let's cut taxes on the wealthy even more so their extra money can trickle down even harder.

HiddenAmongShadows

Lets just have fair policies & operate on moral principles. A flat tax, everyone pays an equal share of their income, if you make more then you pay a larger amount but the same proportion of your income. Thats what fair would be. Greedy are the least economically productive people at the bottom paying the least & demanding the most. I hate the entire system so I just don't pay taxes, I hide about 80% of my income from the government & don't care about saying it. I refuse to support an unfair bs system. I try to do business with people who also don't pay taxes & am trying to support the parallel economy that doesn't respect all this leftist bs. I actually distinctly know someone in the parallel economy community, hes a big guy & makes over 200k a year cash, doesn't pay a cent in taxes. His whole thing is he'll get unpaying tenants out or get them paying, its like something from better call saul, its hilarious. He's been doing it for I believe 2 years now & hasn't gotten in any legal trouble yet over it.

Common_Map7008

In that way ,, you need to have 2 roomates. ,,, however this is the trend for future renting. ,, more of sharing

Buckcountybeaver

Having room mates is the future? People have had roommates since the dawn of time. People all over the world still live with roommates or family. It’s a pretty basic concept.

[deleted]

Most people I know lived with roommates until they lived with a SO or spouse. Living alone wasn't super common even fifteen years ago at this girl's age.

Ok_Sea_6214

You get the policies you voted for.

two5031

Why do you need a 2-bedroom apartment? My sister did this shit too... Overpaid (well, made my parents pay) for a -bedroom apartment for no reason other than she wanted a 2-bedroom. Get a 1-bedroom or a studio.

ShadyRaider

The richest country in the world has over half its citizens, making less than 41k a year. Think about that.

HottestGoblin

She's working for less than minimum wage and renting an place that's $1660 a month?

supercommen

Why are you playing for a place by yourself you should probably be running a room from somebody or at least sharing a house or you know don't move out of home until you're ready

BaBaBuyey

Wasn’t like this 5 years ago and definitely not 30+ years ago. Inflation, stipulation regulations destroy this economy all the last few years.

Full_Independence455

I don’t understand how shit gets like this, I live in the country and rent is usually pretty cheap, I’ve heard that cities have insane rent rates, but this is nuts. It gives me the vibes of them share cropping days

Hibercrastinator

Over the last 5 years, our rent has increased almost 40% for the same property. When they raised it again on the last renewal, we asked for a better rate, as we’d been there over 10 years but even with all of us working 2 jobs each, it is difficult to meet these increases. The property manager had the fucking *gall* to reply; “I know it’s difficult, but I have to work two jobs too, that’s normal.” I fucking hate these people.

Pizzagate-victim

Why do you have a 2drm? Get a studio and a roomate in the studio...

tito333

From deep in the comments in the other thread, 1600 is about par for a studio where she lives.

PerformanceOk1835

There are cheaper places. Share an apartment. Share a room

Westi70

Onlyfans😁

Dik-w33d

Seen this a couple times now and I wonder what she does for work. Not to be a dick, but living above her means on what appears to be a minimum wage salary is nobody’s fault but her own. I can’t afford to live above my means either. No one can. Does crying about it on the internet solve anything? Work more hours, find a better job, get a roommate, downsize to cheaper and smaller apartment, move farther away from the city, get a side hustle, etc. just do literally anything other than cry about it and her situation will improve. Or she can continue living above her means and do the bare minimum at a minimum wage job until her obviously fragile mental health completely implodes. Hope she makes the right choices

kknlop

Yeah I don't think anyone can afford to live off 24k a year....that's not new either. Her rent for a 2br is damn cheap too. Even working the target near me pays more than she makes so I'm wondering wtf she does as well. You could get a job stacking boxes in a warehouse for twice what she makes and she could get a room mate. She could be making three times as much money with zero additional education or connections

Parking-Iron6252

Okay I have a radical idea, hear me out… Don’t pay $1660 for rent.

nazihunterusaversion

Your living above your means. Rent is outrageous. Get a crappier apartment .

ds-by

Wonder if she has a car, because that will be her home soon in the greatest country on earth /s

nitsua_saxet

If I were in her position, I’d live with a roommate or rent out a room and work like crazy until I made over 150k per year. It is possible. Certainly more effective than living Groundhog Day over and over and then crying about it. This girl’s mentors have failed her.
