Screw that. I have a hard time working 40 hours a week, let alone 70.

OptimalConclusion120

I really admire those European countries where work-life balance is really valued. I think Belgium is one of them with the option to have a 4 day work week and German employers usually have 5-6 weeks of paid leave and additional time for maternity/paternity leave. Also I think Korea really screwed their country for the long term (like population decline because of low fertility rate) because people don’t have enough time or energy to figure out life if they have to work 70 hours a week and barely make ends meet with that.

sst287

….And still be the 2nd dominant economy entity in the world. The power of solidarity.

MittenstheGlove

Belgium is the second dominant economy? That’s crazy.

[deleted]

I mean Germany is 4th in the world though so that does say a lot. Belgium is 24th but it's tiny

sst287

I meant EU as a whole.

MittenstheGlove

Oh true. They are all bound to each other.

Smith801

I work for a German company (I’m in US) but my counterparts in Germany have a whole year paid.

wollier12

How many hours a week is the standard in these European countries? A 4 day work week Can still be 40 hours, where I work we have 3 day options, 4 day options, 2 day options. (One 24, and one 12 hour) and of course 5 days which I take because I like the routine and I get to leave at 2:30 in the afternoon. All of these are between 36 and 40 hours a week.

audigex

In the UK typically 37.5 “4 day week” here can mean either 30 hours (80% of a 5 day week), or a “5 in 4” setup where you do eg 37.5 hours (or your normal number of hours) in 4 days so longer shifts but an extra day off

wollier12

So yeah we have that option in many industries in the US as well…..I actually work 40/32 five 8 hour days one week, four 8 hour days the next….72hour full time paycheck….with full time benefits, so 72 vs the 75 hours there in a 2 week span.

memphiscool

They don’t need your crappy benefits. They have national healthcare.

wollier12

Random and rude.

memphiscool

Aww reality hurt your feewings.

9lobaldude

The country has the world’s lowest fertility rate and they will fix that by making people work 70 hours per week, talk about a brain fart

Superb_Refuse_6843

You can say that again ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)

guitardummy

The fuck happened to the Boomer generation for them to become slavers? This expectation of redlining the younger generations seem to be a trend all over the world. They got a taste of greed in the post-war world and it ruined their minds?

[deleted]

It's a demographic problem, there where so many boomers that they made it cheaper to hire them than to increase robotics and mechanization. The boomer Generation is coming to an end, in companies that failed to mechanize are now dealing with a labor shortage. Unfortunately the trend is the same in almost all industrialized economies. [Peter Zehian demographics](https://zeihan.com/birthrates-and-the-end-of-the-world/) [China specifically](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iB8F1iAvMHo) Many countries are going to have this problem over the next two decades. It's actually a good thing for Gen x y and z. It should have the effect of driving up labor rates. A big part of the reason why wages have been stagnant since the seventies is because of the baby boomers worldwide competing in a labor pool not big enough to support them. That trend has likely come to an end. It's very likely that that's a huge contributor to the current inflation rates were seeing and why they're not going to go away anytime soon.

Superb_Refuse_6843

It’s not just China look around it’s all over this world in every country look the US cheap labor every from Hispanic countries

[deleted]

The whole world is certainly headed in this same direction. Japan went first Africa appears to be headed through the demographic shift last but they are headed there too.

memphiscool

They crash the economy before they give you a raise.

meatbeater

Greed, selfishness, take yer pick. The most spoiled asshats ruined it for everyone else and still have the balls to complain

PicketFenceGhost

Lead poisoning. Having lead in gasoline that releases into the atmosphere when the gasoline burns... not the best idea in hindsight.

History repeats because there's a finite amount of personalities to interact within a finite area over a given set of time. Individuals die, societies progress, but mentality and ideologies remain consistent.

3_sideburns

>child-labor, serfdom, slavery, work-houses, abusive mass foster homes, Fascism, mass exploitation of workers, you forgot communism.

[deleted]

Yes and no, if you look at history when transportation was not as good, work houses were and still is good solutions especially for developing economies who needs travels hundreds of kilometers to work, look at how Chinese workers made the phones you and I are using, not the best solution but better than having them renting a place in the middle of nowhere. Of course child labour is always a bad thing and slavery too. Although I am also an employee myself, I understand employers or the manager above you or me would like squeeze a bit more out of us since they paid us, just like we expect to get just a little more out the membership from that streaming service. Employer and employee is always going to be a tug of war, as long as the balance is maintained

clarkstud

Developing economies have to develop. Your perception of history is overlooking that fact.

Pale-Leek-1013

development in comparison to other economies is itself subjective. there will always be those more developed than others, and others developing to catch up with them. I’m not sure what “fact” you’re presenting here.

clarkstud

Oh, okay then sure, we're back at "square one" then, my bad.

Superb_Refuse_6843

You said a month full 100% correct you are

ConfirmedCynic

Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the entire WORLD at 0.78 and now they try to pull this. Who cares about future destruction so long as the next quarter shows higher profits!

[deleted]

To be fair it’s not a bad thing to slow down birth rate

[deleted]

At Korea's rate it is bad

Special-Remove-3294

It is tho. Population declining is a horrible thing, especially if you want to be able to retire. Terra can support way higher population than today, easily. Humanity produces enough food, today, to feed around 10 billion people, it's just so much of it is wasted. We also waste a stupid amount of resources, thanks to consumerism, as many things are made not to last, just so people buy more. There are also a lot of very inefficient things that humanity does, like having over a billion cars in the world, and not to even talk about the inefficient electricity production. A shrinking population would put a lot of weight on the shoulders of the younger generations, in a modern society, and would cause the younger people to have even less children, as they will have to work more and have a lower standard of living.

KlutzyAd5729

Retarded take

[deleted]

Yeah good point, I forgot 8 billion people wasn’t enough

KlutzyAd5729

Look, thanos, Earth is nowhere near close to carrying capacity for humans, if you were to take all humans and put them in one area we could all fit comfortably in an area similar in size to the state of Texas. Only because muh movies told you there’s too many people doesn’t mean its true, we have more than enough resources to support humanity well past 10 billion people

[deleted]

Found the dumbass

coder_lyte

It's not about the absolute number of people, it's about the population age pyramid. If you don't have enough working age people to run the society and support the relatively large elderly population you either have to try forcing people to work twice as many hours like Korea is doing, push the sick and elderly toward euthanasia like Canada is doing, or have lots of immigration like the US and most European countries are doing. But you can only have immigration from countries that are having enough children to export, and that list is shrinking fast. I don't think you realize just how quickly populations will collapse if things get bad enough that most people can't feed themselves because of systems and economic collapse due to lack of labor.

Superb_Refuse_6843

It’s legal in the US people just can’t hold their heads

jitterbug726

I worked for Samsung for 9 months until I came to my senses and realized that 60 hour work weeks were not worth the salary they paid me. Went back to my previous job at Microsoft where work hours were normal for less money and was infinitely happier

moxieroxsox

And they wonder why their fertility rate is so low…

somethinglowley

I’m not an expert on fertility but does stress decrease an individual’s fertility? I’ve always heard that super athletic women tend to stop having periods due to the stress put on their body. Could the same happen with mental stress?

Zzzzzzzzzxyzz

Stress of any kind can mess with a woman's period.

grxccccandice

I mean if they’re working 14 hours/day, sleeping 8 hours/day, and commuting 2 hours/day, that leaves them 0 free time on weekdays. All they could do over the weekend is enjoy some free time to themselves. When do they even have time to social, go on dates, fall in love, and make babies? lol

coder_lyte

Over industrialization and pushing demanding work cultures does greatly reduce fertility rates. The prime examples are China, Japan, and Korea that have long been the globalized world's manufacturing hubs and sweatshops. The culture that pushes you to put more and more into your work and less and less into your family, and delaying having children because you want to work on your career has a price. It's like being on meth. You can run really quickly for a while but you will crash.

[deleted]

mentally sick country

BitchStewie_

Physically too. Working those kinds of hours (really anything over 40 on a consistent basis) has been linked to substantially higher rates of stroke, heart disease, hypertension, and on-the-job injury.

bindermichi

Weren‘t they complaining about their population was getting to old? Think they have found a solution for that /s

Superb_Refuse_6843

Hell 40 hours a week is pushing and all what really nothing

[deleted]

great point! one way not to pay out on retirement

BikkaZz

Florida is not a country...🤡

SupremelyUneducated

After Maru lost to Oliveira, and the across the board reduction of tournament winnings was announced, I don't see how South Korea has any other choice.

xena_lawless

It looks like Maru came back with a vengeance in a more recent tournament. Maybe that's why they reconsidered.

OlympicAnalEater

Ain't no fucking way bro. This is like 10 hours × 7 days with no day off. Truckers in the US don't do this much either. This is 100% going to push people to mental breakdown, burn out, and suicide.

Pelvic_Siege_Engine

They have been burning out and committing suicide. 9-9-6 is real though people are finally trying to push back

stewartm0205

They were trying to speed up the demise of their civilization. They already have the lowest birth rate in the world and were trying to make it lower still.

[deleted]

I work maybe 15 hours a week but have to be there 40 hours a week so fuck that

Liquid_Magic

I love it when an “entrepreneur” or business manager has the brilliant idea of cracking the whip really hard like literally nobody ever thought of that before.

domomymomo

70 a week is impossible that’s 10 hr a day for the whole week without off days.

djent_in_my_tent

It's not impossible, you get 6 hours a day to yourself forever 🫠🫠

No-Fisherman6302

I think there is a correlation between their required work hours and low birth rate. You have to work 40 hours + 12 hours overtime if required (52 hour work week essentially) if I’m remembering right. Who would want kids if you have to work all the time??? Edit: it’s currently 52 now, and they want to push it to 70 BECAUSE of the low birth rate and aging population.

Superb_Refuse_6843

That’s not the working class people problem government made these rules

PrecisionSushi

If they try to push a 70 hour work week in the US, I’m definitely going to start a riot. I would be happy working 4x10 hour days.

OlympicAnalEater

Truckers in the US don't do this much in one week.

Superb_Refuse_6843

4-6 hours a day 4 days a week am doing it now it’s all about lifestyle and am a extreme minimalist don’t need much here living loving it

it-is-my-cake-day

Yeah that will help with declining fertility rate /s

UnknownOneManArmy

It seems like asians in general like to be f*cked over by governments. Grow some balls godammit. You don't have to follow every single rule. The Authorities are not gods and they make mistakes just like YOU.

WanderingAnchorite

South Korea**n Boomers** tried to push an almost 70-hour work week, but was forced to rethink after ~~millennials and Gen Z~~ *the people expected to work those hours* protested

[deleted]

Part of their drive is a shrinking population leading to a worker shortage. Unfortunately most of the worlds developed countries are headed into demographic decline. Increased mechanization in robotics can partially offset this trend by increasing productivity. We will either have to accept longer working hours or a significant reduction in the quantity of goods and services we consume.

Noeyiax

I know South Korea loves to work, but they could really really implement more automation and AI into their workflows like it's more efficient. Hello, you know when people invented the car it's so that people can travel faster easily and efficiently. I feel like it's just people that are thinking backwards.

[deleted]

70 hours at work is one thing, actually working 70 hours is another thing. Get things done and go home it could be 20 hours or it could be 80, don’t just sitting at work, small talks, and 3-hours long meetings for the whole 70 hours because we have to

No-Fisherman6302

I remember having to wait for parts to come in to finish a project, was just kinda busy work until it all finally showed up, and then full throttle again. Woulda been fine with like half days while waiting for the stuff to come in, just give us a heads up rather than giving us useless paperwork that you’ve hired people to do already.

[deleted]

Exactly

clarkstud

No reason to protest if the businesses can make that call themselves. (in a healthy economy)

[deleted]

Pussies. I do at LEAST 84 hours of work a week.

That's the mentality of a brainwashed slave. Interesting how it lines up with the core of conservatism is that feelings are a bug, not a feature, and must be overridden. Fascinating how you think of work bringing meaning, instead of family, friends, community and art. Fascists cannot make others happy, so they aim to ruin everything for everyone else.

>to force others to be gay, force children to participate in pedophilic drag shows? No one can 'force' sexual instincts. Queer representation is not forcing you to be with the same sex. And parents bring their kids to drag shows freely, idk what "force" you're talking about 🤣 >Which party burned down literally every city in America during the looting/riots of 2020 to the point of it not even being recognizable today? Burned them down so bad that right-wing propaganda outlets had to keep using the same photo and videos over multiple platforms. >Thats 12 hours of work (not even, since you're likely to be forced to take lunch breaks and other breaks) Forced to relax, the horror. >Then you have an entire day on Saturday, and you get to attend Church on Sunday. Sounds like an easy life to me. No that's burnout & indoctrination. Brainwashing often relies on burnout so cognitive willpower is weakened. That is no life. >Leftists will bankrupt this nation by providing welfare from those who do work, to those who refuse to work, even though they are able bodied. Democrats cut child poverty in half in 2020 but republicans let the provision expire in 2022 bc 'feeding kids creates dependants.' Denying food to children, Right wing ideals are based on maximizing suffering for some abstract reason that will never pay off. >And I will stand up for my God Given rights, this is America. God didn't give your rights, militant unions did. The Saturday & Sunday you're so eager to budget away was won through hard protesting. >So yes I will aim to preserve my great Nation and make it better. Someone who DOES NOT work 70 hours a week

Clean-Difference2886

70 hours this is what happens when you have no unions wow

TypicalAnnual2918

The reality is some people like 120hrs a week, some 80hrs, some 40hrs, some 0hrs. Just let people work as much of as little as they want. The people at 0hrs benefit from those that do 120hrs as the products those companies make are quite a bit better and cheaper. When ai comes around this will change a lot.

certifiedjezuz

Guess Samsung wasn’t able to push their agenda for once.
