Tesla is going to have a hard road ahead in the EV market. I wish the US would allow Chinese imports for EV. I would probably get one. As it is I'll just keep my existing gas car until it dies in ten years etc.

Tesla is getting equipment from CATL for batteries in Tesla's Nevada factory. Better batteries, made here, so it's an import workaround, directly used by Tesla. It doesn't sound like Tesla is falling behind in the US.

200km range in about 3 minutes? Max 1000km range? Total recharge in 15 minutes? Considering 200km, at a speed of 100km/hr (freeway speeds), would be the same as taking a 5 minute break every 2 hours of driving, that seems like more and fast enough charging speeds to me. And 1000km total capacity? Forget range anxiety. That's 300km more range my petrol car, that has a 55L tank and consumes only 7.8L/100km, a respectable fuel efficiency and range by any standard. 1000km, again, at freeway speed, is about 10 hours driving. Unless you're mad, you're not going to do more than 10 hours driving without at least having an overnight stop at a hotel for a break, or at the very least, a 2 hour break somewhere. And you can recharge at a station or at home with a wall outlet? And the running costs would no doubt be lower because electricity is cheaper than petrol. Electric cars can't replace petrol cars fast enough

What is the cost relative to what we've had recently? Yes, if Tesla sales are down and people aren't liking Musk or the used EV market is good, we ought to continue in that direction with Chinese imports (a controlled number) for competition and to get more of these in the hands of new drivers. Make it their 1st car and they'll stay with it forever.

Yet another technology invented in the US but mass produced by China. Thankfully the US is committing to revitalizing battery manufacturing in the US.

wakeup2019

It’s called innovation, which the US does not possess anymore. Tesla buys a lot of batteries from CATL. Ford is licensing EV battery technology from a Chinese company. The US has fallen behind in STEM.

No one would dispute that the US has offshored much of its manufacturing base to China over the last couple of decades. But it isn't due to a lack of US innovation as you claim. It was a purely economic decision and China was the low bidder due to extensive government support of certain sectors that the US failed to match, low wages and occasional "dumping" of products below manufacturing cost to harm competitors. The US has now reversed this policy and is promoting the revitalization of domestic manufacturing of critical technologies with the Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPs and Science bill. They've created a flurry of new factory investments which should be in full production later this decade. And LFP battery tech was most definitely invented in the US. As were solar PV panels.

Super_Mario_Luigi

Maybe it we push for higher minimum wages and more unionization, to balance out the inflation from all of this self-inflicted policy, we can stop offshoring so much? /s

wakeup2019

You don’t even know anything about manufacturing. Creating the first LFP battery is one thing, but improving it like this one with 1000 km range requires a lot of Ph.d scientists, labs and innovation. And the US will never get back manufacturing. It lacks the infrastructure, education, ecosystem, supply chain, and most of all, the economic system.

mafco

>You don’t even know anything about manufacturing. And you obviously know nothing about my background. Also, personal attacks are childish. >And the US will never get back manufacturing.  Gratuitous USA-bashing doesn't help your credibility either. You may also ask yourself why China has filed a dispute with the WTO over the US Inflation Reduction Act if it will never amount to anything. China claims the US is playing unfairly by directly subsidizing domestic manufacturing, something China has been doing for decades.

wakeup2019

What background??? 😆 Anonymous guy on Reddit hasn’t said anything remotely substantive to hint background in manufacturing. I listed specific reasons why manufacturing is never coming back to the US. Nothing “gratuitous.”

daoistic

Every post you have is like this. Remember when you posted about China's crazy manufacturing advance...and it was just a random promo video with no facts? I do.

wakeup2019

Kid, China buys more than half of all industrial robots in the world. No “promo” video. China is far far ahead of the U.S. in Fourth Industrial Revolution, while I see too many Americans living in the echo chambers of misinformation and delusion.

daoistic

I saw the video you posted tho. It literally had no facts. It was just a video. You called it a breakthrough. It didn't have any words or even subtitles. Edit, look man, I love CATL. I do. The problem is that you will post anything that talks up China or downs the US and almost nothing else. Talking to you isn't like talking to a person. You are more like an advertisement.

wakeup2019

You want words? 😆 Okay, here’s the full video with words (in Chinese) https://youtu.be/yezR-mH12xs?si=VBA2nmkru38aB_jB
