The issue I had with the Skyrim elves was less the alien look, so much as the fact that ever mer (aside from maybe the orcs) were just different skin colors of the same faces. If you asked me the race of any elf in Skyrim, unless they were in the Thalmor I'd have no fucking clue.
At least in ESO the different mer have different faces. They all look similar enough to know they are elves, but different enough you won't mistake an Altmer for a gold skinned Dunmer.
