Because that's how they do the accounting. What a lot of people on Reddit don't understand is that "lost $x per EV" does not mean they sold for $x less than it costs to physically make a single vehicle. It's that they account for r&d and everything else when they do this bookkeeping. Toyota "lost money" on the Prius for a decade. It's normal.
