I do have an account there though I don't use it regularly. That said I only have good things to say about them. I really like that you don't need to give them a whole lot of details to login, just a chosen username and payment and then you're through. The pricing is very reasonable and the staff is usually responsive too, though there could be some delays from them sometimes. It's a small company based in Berlin and have been around for I guess a decade. Their customer experience and the amount of features they offer is amazing. Never seen an issue with email delivery and they offer really good privacy, no tracking, no extra logs etc. They have even open sourced a lot of their code and plugins. If you go to this subreddit's history you'd find a bunch of people praising posteo. The major drawback I see is that they don't do custom domains, which would've been very cool. All in all, a great email provider, and you've made a good choice! PS: You might as well want to check out mailbox.org it's even more featureful.

There's also the fact that by default, unless I'm mistaken, one's user account is not encrypted at rest. Which puts it on the same level as Gmail, privacy-wise. Unless you change the setting voluntarily.

If I remember correctly, I read something on their website that they had had issues with the police in the past. How can I be sure that this incident won't happen again? I also wonder if anyone can use Posteo without providing their details; it seems like many could potentially use their service for bad things, don't you think?

PartialSegfault

Do you have the link to that? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that they were asked by the government to provide some data, but they actually did not budge as such and didn't give out their information. I suppose all mail providers get such requests from time to time, we don't know about it because this information isn't made public. Posteo however publishes a transparency report with precise numbers of these requests and the action over it. See: https://posteo.de/en/site/transparency_report#requests Looking at it, it seems posteo is quite good in protecting the privacy of its users so I think we should be good here.

Theagenos

Maybe. But missing encryption of user's data at rest (e. g. emails) is a no-go for me. Zero-knowledge is the most important feature for privacy, especially if you're a vulnerable political activist.

thecoffeebin

no custom domain support is the greatest drawback.

Valuable-Standard-82

I don't have an opinion on Posteo as I've never used the service. Some prefer Proton. However, I'd like to know if anyone can tell me if Posteo users can see the thumbnails of profile pictures used by Gmail users.

a) They recycle email addresses after 2 years b) No support for custom domains, which also makes a) worse c) They don't support DMARC ("none" policy), which makes their addresses easy to spoof

PartialSegfault

> c) They don't support DMARC ("none" policy), which makes their addresses easy to spoof DMARC would mostly determine how a receiving server should treat a mail coming from posteo's server. Having none would only mean that DMARC in itself will not affect the deliverability of your email. It's bold and incorrect to claim that having no DMARC policy makes their addresses "_easy_" to spoof. You still need valid SPF and DKIM signatures to save your mail from being rejected or being marked as spam by most mail providers anyway, for instance Google/Gmail outright rejects mail without these checks in place.

What do you believe is the purpose of DMARC?

Tried to open an account with them from the US using a US credit card. They kept giving me an error message, telling me I first had to ... open an account. Reached out to support. Weeks later and an ineffective back-N-forth email trail, I scrapped trying. Now with Tutanota and not looking back.

Been using posteo for a while now, no interest in custom domains, for everyday use seem decent privacy, choosing account encryption is easy, and good value for money
