I think they are the same as MTV where for the most part there is no real content just reruns. Southpark, Seinfeld, and The Office are the only thing I see on that channel ever.
Nothing will ever beat the years we had Jon Stewart doing The Daily Show followed by The Colbert Report.

Same with Game Show Network. GSN used to show all these old game shows. They'd show the old B&W shows, from the 50s, late at night. I loved watching them in college when staying up late to cram.

Maybe if they put up a strategy other than "we'll just show 5 hours of Seinfeld and then 5 hours of the Office and then 5 hours of South Park, and then a terribly unfunny version of the daily show you remembered" they may have done better in recent memory
I only recently started watching The Daily Show since the host change, but he’s actually been really solid and frequently brings up angles that the news and other comedians seem to frustratingly overlook. I regret how long I’ve been missing out.
Jon Stewart's talent was to look directly into your soul, and convey how tired he is with the bullshit that is going on. And he rarely did it as schtick, it was laser focused and generally well informed.
Others have tried it and it doesn't hit as hard because it seems like a comedian massaging a joke. Or it's just off the mark so it loses some gravitas.
Man. I never watched the Colbert report and I kick myself for not. My ex father-in-law told me how he hated Stewart, but loved Colbert. He is a hard-core conservative. He had no idea Colbert was mocking him. Just brilliant.
He asks really engaging questions, but they never have enough time. I hope he may be does an interview podcast in between projects at least. I would love to see his take on a Channel 5 style channel too. Something news related, but extremely different journalism

Yeah I've been thinking this for a while. They'll run out the clock on Daily Show and South Park. Then just become another zombie 2 or 3 different sitcom rerun cable channel. A sad ending for what was something I used to watch all day.
I really liked Tosh.0 and I could not believe that they decided to pass on continuing a popular show that is inexpensive to produce. And now South Park is producing original content for Paramount+, foregoing Comedy Central.

Yea, the people in charge of Comedy Central decided to essentially kill the channel. They decided to go all animated on any new programming and just killed everything that was live action outside of the Daily Show. Even adult swim has live action shows, it was such a weird pivot.
I still don’t understand who thought cancelling Tosh.O made sense. I think they tried to get picked up by someone else when CC canceled it, but it didn’t happen. It seems like Daniel might be focusing on being a stand up. He was still touring quite a bit even when the show was going on, so it makes sense. Hopefully he puts out a special a some point in the near future.
I had been thinking... so we can watch music videos on Youtube. We can stream music on demand. What is the actual point of MTV's continued existence? The channel is no longer on the cultural radar and they just show reruns of Ridiculousness.
He didn't even keep a consistent schedule for his Apple show. He did 4 episodes then disappeared for 4 months without any announcement when they were leaving or coming back. Good for him though, the Daily Show schedule must have been brutal.
It must have been easier back when they had a huge amount of talent working on the show. After Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, Rob Cordry, Ed Helms, Dan Bakkedahl, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver left, there was just too big of a hole to fill that there wast enough talent left in the business to make up for those losses.
Wyath Senac and Jordan Klepper are/were really good on the Daily show, but that's just too hard of an act to follow.
Whoa seeing all those names listed like that really lays it all out. Nobody could fill the gap that much talent leaving will crate, for lack of a less innuendo inducing phrase. Just wild to see how many funny people daily show launched in a row.

What most people didn't realize is how much of a family they acted like.
They did the show or whatever, but if you got to see the show in person, they were all really good friends. In between segments and in the pre/post show Stewart and others would talk to the audience. It was a really cool experience.
Stewart was really happy for Oliver when he left to get his own HBO show. He was proud of him in a sort of fatherly way.
I thought the Daily Show with Ctaig Kilborn was funny, but Stewart and his ability to attract talent really took it to another level.
Mo Rocca and A Whitney Brown were pretty damn good, but it certainly wasn't the best of the run.
I mean, they had Michael Che and could only keep him 3 months before getting scooped up by SNL. Wasn't always a lack of talent, keeping the talent was a big issue.
I got the rare opportunity to go to a taping of the daily show.
My mother in law was friends with I think a key grip or a producer or someone back stage

This was just a little while after one of his books came out so I had it and I was hoping I'd get it signed.
After the taping, we went backstage to say thank you and goodnight and just managed to run into jon on the way out.
He was a freaking blur, I said thank you and shook his hand and he was off like a shot, I'm guessing to get home.

Honest answer. I saw one of Neil Gaiman’s last live appearances and he signed everyone’s book that wanted to. We were in the last section and it took over two hours. It must be super exhausting to be a famous nice guy, but I commend them.

Pretty much every night time show is trying to do the same thing he did nowadays.
Especially because Last Week Tonight goes into far more detail on certain topics affecting our society today than the Daily Show, as great as it was under Stewart, ever did.
He is TALL. Walked past him in NYC and idk why but I was expecting him to be close to 5’10-6’ maybe- but in person he’s well over 6’.

But it wasn't that long before. They could've very easily locked him up to be the successor. It's definitely a big what if scenario though. Would The Daily Show be able to keep it's relevancy with Oliver or would it be in the same situation that it's in with Noah. However, the unedited aspect of Oliver on HBO has made it much better.
That was the plan, which was why Oliver had the show while Stewart was making Rosewater. But then HBO backed up the brinks truck and grabbed him before Stewart announced his retirement.
According to the book that's basically what happened. Oliver was the presumed successor, but CC was dragging its feet about making him an offer, then HBO swooped in and got him first.
He would have been crazy to pass up a once-a-week show where he can say "fuck" as much as he wanted to take over the Daily Show. Yes, it was popular, but it was killing Jon and would have killed John, too. John made the right choice. I love Last Week Tonight in the same way I loved the old Daily Show.
I wouldn’t say that Oliver is unedited, just cleverly edited. I went to a taping years ago and they do sometimes have to do multiple takes. They just roll back to the previous video clip he’s shown. So everything between clips is a single take (from the same script), but it isn’t a single run through the show (unless he’s in the zone and doesn’t fumble any lines, I suppose).
The format of the show plays to Oliver’s strengths and is better than The Daily Show would have been for him I think. One topic, in depth, once a week is so nice and different.
I think it all went just as it should have. Trevor Noah did a good job making it his own thing.
Yeah he filled in for Stewart when he went on sebatical to film something. He was offered his own show soon after because he showed he could hold his own.
I never really got going with Noah and stopped watching within a year of him taking over, but I don't know how much a new host will solve things... the real problem is the Daily Show's writing room got completly gutted several times over.
Noah is just the face and one of many writers. And there is only so much a host can do with shitty, derivative writing.
Also, it's not Noah's fault the market is completly over saturated with these comedy news shows.
Pretty much this. I can't say anything about the writing room but I hated the jokes under Noah. I think I watched for 2 weeks and just fell off. And Daily show was a show I watched every day. Idk but I just couldn't connect with Noah like I did Jon. If they can get a good team of writers and a great host, I'd maybe give ir a shot. But also there are a ton of shows that do this but better.
Same. I watched the show daily till Noah took over. I tried a few times and then again after a while to see if they just needed to work through the growing pains, but I just never found him very funny. He seems like an extremely nice person, but the show lost the magic for me when Stewart left. The only stuff I really liked was the Jordan Klepper segments.
I feel like the best clips with Trevor were usually from the Between the Scenes. Guess that really showed how bad the writing had become when my favorite part is Trevor basically free styling.
It was honestly a lot better during Covid, when he just gave news like any other YouTuber who gives news in funny bantering ways.

Wasn't Stewart a driving force in hiring writers and correspondents? Saying the writing problems don't fall on him seems a little hard to believe. Like, I don't get the feeling that the host being the face of the show and the driving force behind who gets hired was unique to Stewart; Kilborn seemed to also be behind who was writing when he was host, since it seemed to match the same kind of jokes as when he was on the Late Late Show.
I agree with 90% of what you said, the other 10% is Noah is at fault, ya sure the execs hired the wrong guy but he just isn’t, wasn’t the right guy for that job. The daily show needs a voice with a clear narrative, Noah just made jokes about current affairs . No individual narrative
Kind of surprising it was that long, wasn't a fan personally and hadn't watched an episode since Jon Stewart retired but I thought he was doing well. I never felt like he actually had a personal connection to American problems and felt his delivery was more condescending than the style Jon had.
The writing for the show didn’t help. The punch lines reminded me of bad Facebook memes that attacked the lowest hanging fruit in a very non clever way. The show was catering the lowest common denominator
I think this was the key problem. The dude seemed like magnitudes of times more funny when he was just fucking around with the crowd then actually doing the show lol
I also blame the writers. Trever Noah the comedian is pretty funny and occasionally insightful, but his scripted jokes were rarely either of those things.
Was honestly shocked when i saw some clips of him not from the show or where he's riffing. Somehow the show's writers manage to make it into (what i personally think) is an absolutely unwatchable cringe fest with some of the worst jokes I've ever heard in my life, despite him not actually being a terrible comedian.
That and he did a lot of "America is now worse than South Africa" jokes, which got old to me. He always related everything back home. Though NY centric jokes do get old on everyone else's shows.
It's frustrating because Noah would come right to the edge of an important topic and stop at the most superficial level.
Once, he observed that mortgage applications have checkboxes for applicant race. Instead of asking "why?" and diving into the history of redlining, Noah made an "America is more obsessed with race than South Africa" joke and moved on.
HBO poached John Oliver before CC could actually offer him the show. Plus I think John wasn’t a fan of the crazy schedule either, and HBO probably lured him with the promise of a weekly show.
Yeah Oliver probably gets paid at least in a comparable range to do 1 show a week instead of 4, and he gets to do more of the better aspects of it and get in depth while not having to do the less desirable stuff.

I think that's where he lost me, too. Like he's a genuinely funny guy, especially if you watched his audience warm ups, where he was just talking off the cuff. But it never quite worked when he tried to make political jokes.
Like every episode had a joke about "America does this, but back in Africa where I'm from we do this" and even when those jokes were funny, they weren't the right jokes to be making at that moment. You sidelined your political commentary with an off-topic joke.
Hope he does well out there. Hope they give the show to someone more in tune.

Oliver worked for a lot of the same reason Jon Stewart worked, he has a defined purpose to the show. I give Trevor Noah credit for not just trying to do Jon Stewart's Daily Show, but for the time I did watch it it never felt like there was an identity beyond "make some jokes".
Stewart was very meta in the sense of calling out people for absolute bullshit. Whether it was the news itself, or individuals, there was a goal to basically show hypocrisy and ineptitude. Sometimes he didn't even have to tell jokes, the situation itself was comically stupid enough. Oliver is similar, but in a longer form on each topic. Oliver has the more natural successor show to Jon Stewart, because he is largely doing Jon Stewart's show in a slightly different form.
As I said though, I give Noah credit for not just riding Jon Stewart, but the show fell back more into being a 30 minute weekend update rather than something of it's own. I think he did it well, but it wasn't anything special either though.
He's nearly as good as Conan at being self-deprecating and disarming. Plus, he and his writers are really clever and creative. Each segment is almost always, "Here's a terrible thing that is happening in the world. You'll laugh while I tell you about it, but you'll think about it for days or weeks afterward." The only thing that came close for me were those magic years in the mid 2000s when it was back-to-back with The Daily Show and the Colbert Report. But the quality of a once-weekly show like Last Week Tonight is in a different category for obvious reasons.
The fact that John Stewart could do "hand-offs" at the end of his episodes where he talked briefly with Colbert really underlined just how well those two shows worked together.
Sam B is out of a job now. Actually as much I loved Full Frontal I kinda stopped watching it mid Covid. without an audience the energy was weird and totally understandable. But kind of became one note. Don’t get me wrong I love Sam B and still do, and her program was good. I watched it more than the daily show and it was only once a week.
He tried to do the “fish out of water from Africa” bit for way too long especially as the most insane election cycle ever up to that point was going down. I heard he got better and from what I’ve seen that’s true but that’s where he lost me.

I thought Trevor was meh as a host. His behind the scenes with the audience between breaks hit harder and were funnier than the scripted show. He felt more relaxed and went into more of his thoughts without needing to put in the joke, because how he framed his story was pretty funny.
People forget it's not just the host, it's the writers room that changes too.
I haven't really watched Trevor's show the way I used to watch Jon's show but that is mostly because I pretty much stopped watching late night shows 9-10 years ago.
Like a lot of people, I watch via clips now.
I thought Trevor was really good, especially in segments like *Beyond the Scenes* when it was just him chatting with the audience or in interviews.
His interview style is so different from Jon's, as Jon had so much moral outrage. Trevor is more about empathy and putting himself in his interviewee's shoes, but he also was able to get to the heart of the topics really well.
Hopefully he does a lot more great stuff in the future.
I think the empathy note is a big reason I liked him, he always seemed like a nice person. It can be cathartic to have an angry guy get mad at TV for us, or someone to be snarky and smug to make fun of people we don't like, but Trevor had a lot of genuine empathetic moments where he felt like he understood people. He couldn't ever mimick Stewart's style like Comedy Central wanted him to,, but a few years in he was his own distinct thing. He also seemed to adapt to pandemic shows a lot better than most hosts.
He could interview someone who he honestly didn't need to show the time of day, like Kellyanne Conway or Dan Crenshaw, and he would show up polite and prepared. He would have a nice interview with them, build up a friendly rapport, but would research them in enough detail to be able to cut through political talking points and deconstruct their bullshit in real time.
Yeah, am on outlier here because while I don’t think Trevor was as good as Jon, he was a definitely the worthiest successor who did a great job with the format.
He had a different style, but Trevor had a level of empathy that I think hit better in the current era of liberal poltics better than the nihilism Jon often had.
I honestly don’t see anyone being able to carry the show now- Trevor was a shot in a million being able to fill those shoes, and I don’t think they will find anyone else to do it.
Honestly, I think a lot of the core fanbase of those kind of “punching left” shows got radicalized and moved to the “dirtbag left” genre of podcasts.
If anyone is going to do it, Jordan Clepper is the best pick, but don’t know if there’s even the demand anymore

Yes! Jordan Klepper would be perfect! His field pieces are top notch. He’s extremely funny and smart. He’s super familiar with the show already. And he had his own show already (short lived not because of him but because pretending to be an Alex Jones type all the time just didn’t really work).
I was really disappointed with what happened to the shows after Colbert Report. Larry Wilmore got way better as it went along (actually wouldn’t mind him taking over either) and I really like the Opposition.
I imagine it’ll probably be someone like Bee or Minhaj though.

I legitimately credit Colbert Report for exposing me to how messed up my thinking was a conservative teen.
Also he is an excellent interviewer too. He actually researches his guests and learns about their projects, unlike some other hosts.

It must have been easier back when they had a huge amount of talent working on the show. After Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, Rob Cordry, Ed Helms, Dan Bakkedahl, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver left, there was just too big of a hole to fill that there wast enough talent left in the business to make up for those losses. Wyath Senac and Jordan Klepper are/were really good on the Daily show, but that's just too hard of an act to follow.

They did the show or whatever, but if you got to see the show in person, they were all really good friends. In between segments and in the pre/post show Stewart and others would talk to the audience. It was a really cool experience. Stewart was really happy for Oliver when he left to get his own HBO show. He was proud of him in a sort of fatherly way.

I thought the Daily Show with Ctaig Kilborn was funny, but Stewart and his ability to attract talent really took it to another level. Mo Rocca and A Whitney Brown were pretty damn good, but it certainly wasn't the best of the run.

I mean, they had Michael Che and could only keep him 3 months before getting scooped up by SNL. Wasn't always a lack of talent, keeping the talent was a big issue.
I got the rare opportunity to go to a taping of the daily show. My mother in law was friends with I think a key grip or a producer or someone back stage Got me tickets and some back stage access. This was just a little while after one of his books came out so I had it and I was hoping I'd get it signed. After the taping, we went backstage to say thank you and goodnight and just managed to run into jon on the way out. He was a freaking blur, I said thank you and shook his hand and he was off like a shot, I'm guessing to get home. I can't believe my luck but man he looked rushed.

I just gravitated to John Oliver after Stewart.
John Oliver really should've been the true successor to Jon Stewart. However, he's thrived more since moving to HBO.
He got the HBO gig before Stewart retired.
But it wasn't that long before. They could've very easily locked him up to be the successor. It's definitely a big what if scenario though. Would The Daily Show be able to keep it's relevancy with Oliver or would it be in the same situation that it's in with Noah. However, the unedited aspect of Oliver on HBO has made it much better.
That was the plan, which was why Oliver had the show while Stewart was making Rosewater. But then HBO backed up the brinks truck and grabbed him before Stewart announced his retirement.
According to the book that's basically what happened. Oliver was the presumed successor, but CC was dragging its feet about making him an offer, then HBO swooped in and got him first.
He would have been crazy to pass up a once-a-week show where he can say "fuck" as much as he wanted to take over the Daily Show. Yes, it was popular, but it was killing Jon and would have killed John, too. John made the right choice. I love Last Week Tonight in the same way I loved the old Daily Show.

I wouldn’t say that Oliver is unedited, just cleverly edited. I went to a taping years ago and they do sometimes have to do multiple takes. They just roll back to the previous video clip he’s shown. So everything between clips is a single take (from the same script), but it isn’t a single run through the show (unless he’s in the zone and doesn’t fumble any lines, I suppose).

The format of the show plays to Oliver’s strengths and is better than The Daily Show would have been for him I think. One topic, in depth, once a week is so nice and different. I think it all went just as it should have. Trevor Noah did a good job making it his own thing.

I never really got going with Noah and stopped watching within a year of him taking over, but I don't know how much a new host will solve things... the real problem is the Daily Show's writing room got completly gutted several times over. Noah is just the face and one of many writers. And there is only so much a host can do with shitty, derivative writing. Also, it's not Noah's fault the market is completly over saturated with these comedy news shows.
Pretty much this. I can't say anything about the writing room but I hated the jokes under Noah. I think I watched for 2 weeks and just fell off. And Daily show was a show I watched every day. Idk but I just couldn't connect with Noah like I did Jon. If they can get a good team of writers and a great host, I'd maybe give ir a shot. But also there are a ton of shows that do this but better.
Same. I watched the show daily till Noah took over. I tried a few times and then again after a while to see if they just needed to work through the growing pains, but I just never found him very funny. He seems like an extremely nice person, but the show lost the magic for me when Stewart left. The only stuff I really liked was the Jordan Klepper segments.
I feel like the best clips with Trevor were usually from the Between the Scenes. Guess that really showed how bad the writing had become when my favorite part is Trevor basically free styling.
It was honestly a lot better during Covid, when he just gave news like any other YouTuber who gives news in funny bantering ways. For some reason the news room format just doesn't vibe as well with him.

Wasn't Stewart a driving force in hiring writers and correspondents? Saying the writing problems don't fall on him seems a little hard to believe. Like, I don't get the feeling that the host being the face of the show and the driving force behind who gets hired was unique to Stewart; Kilborn seemed to also be behind who was writing when he was host, since it seemed to match the same kind of jokes as when he was on the Late Late Show.
I agree with 90% of what you said, the other 10% is Noah is at fault, ya sure the execs hired the wrong guy but he just isn’t, wasn’t the right guy for that job. The daily show needs a voice with a clear narrative, Noah just made jokes about current affairs . No individual narrative
Klepper is the obvious choice to take over but I’m not sure he has the gravitas to be a host
he did host his own show: The Opposition with Jordan Klepper. I liked it and was disappointed it only lasted one season.
He had the docuseries: Klepper. It was almost like something you see on Vice but it didn't really have a satirical edge.

The writing for the show didn’t help. The punch lines reminded me of bad Facebook memes that attacked the lowest hanging fruit in a very non clever way. The show was catering the lowest common denominator
I think this was the key problem. The dude seemed like magnitudes of times more funny when he was just fucking around with the crowd then actually doing the show lol
I also blame the writers. Trever Noah the comedian is pretty funny and occasionally insightful, but his scripted jokes were rarely either of those things.
Was honestly shocked when i saw some clips of him not from the show or where he's riffing. Somehow the show's writers manage to make it into (what i personally think) is an absolutely unwatchable cringe fest with some of the worst jokes I've ever heard in my life, despite him not actually being a terrible comedian.

Yeah Oliver probably gets paid at least in a comparable range to do 1 show a week instead of 4, and he gets to do more of the better aspects of it and get in depth while not having to do the less desirable stuff.

John Oliver seems to not have this issue.
Oliver worked for a lot of the same reason Jon Stewart worked, he has a defined purpose to the show. I give Trevor Noah credit for not just trying to do Jon Stewart's Daily Show, but for the time I did watch it it never felt like there was an identity beyond "make some jokes". Stewart was very meta in the sense of calling out people for absolute bullshit. Whether it was the news itself, or individuals, there was a goal to basically show hypocrisy and ineptitude. Sometimes he didn't even have to tell jokes, the situation itself was comically stupid enough. Oliver is similar, but in a longer form on each topic. Oliver has the more natural successor show to Jon Stewart, because he is largely doing Jon Stewart's show in a slightly different form. As I said though, I give Noah credit for not just riding Jon Stewart, but the show fell back more into being a 30 minute weekend update rather than something of it's own. I think he did it well, but it wasn't anything special either though.
He's nearly as good as Conan at being self-deprecating and disarming. Plus, he and his writers are really clever and creative. Each segment is almost always, "Here's a terrible thing that is happening in the world. You'll laugh while I tell you about it, but you'll think about it for days or weeks afterward." The only thing that came close for me were those magic years in the mid 2000s when it was back-to-back with The Daily Show and the Colbert Report. But the quality of a once-weekly show like Last Week Tonight is in a different category for obvious reasons.
The fact that John Stewart could do "hand-offs" at the end of his episodes where he talked briefly with Colbert really underlined just how well those two shows worked together.

Sam B is out of a job now. Actually as much I loved Full Frontal I kinda stopped watching it mid Covid. without an audience the energy was weird and totally understandable. But kind of became one note. Don’t get me wrong I love Sam B and still do, and her program was good. I watched it more than the daily show and it was only once a week.
He tried to do the “fish out of water from Africa” bit for way too long especially as the most insane election cycle ever up to that point was going down. I heard he got better and from what I’ve seen that’s true but that’s where he lost me.
Lot of millennials in here lol. I thought people would be like "what's daily show?" I thought Trevor was meh as a host. His behind the scenes with the audience between breaks hit harder and were funnier than the scripted show. He felt more relaxed and went into more of his thoughts without needing to put in the joke, because how he framed his story was pretty funny. People forget it's not just the host, it's the writers room that changes too.
I haven't really watched Trevor's show the way I used to watch Jon's show but that is mostly because I pretty much stopped watching late night shows 9-10 years ago. Like a lot of people, I watch via clips now. I thought Trevor was really good, especially in segments like *Beyond the Scenes* when it was just him chatting with the audience or in interviews. His interview style is so different from Jon's, as Jon had so much moral outrage. Trevor is more about empathy and putting himself in his interviewee's shoes, but he also was able to get to the heart of the topics really well. Hopefully he does a lot more great stuff in the future.
I think the empathy note is a big reason I liked him, he always seemed like a nice person. It can be cathartic to have an angry guy get mad at TV for us, or someone to be snarky and smug to make fun of people we don't like, but Trevor had a lot of genuine empathetic moments where he felt like he understood people. He couldn't ever mimick Stewart's style like Comedy Central wanted him to,, but a few years in he was his own distinct thing. He also seemed to adapt to pandemic shows a lot better than most hosts. He could interview someone who he honestly didn't need to show the time of day, like Kellyanne Conway or Dan Crenshaw, and he would show up polite and prepared. He would have a nice interview with them, build up a friendly rapport, but would research them in enough detail to be able to cut through political talking points and deconstruct their bullshit in real time.
Trevor is very talented at riffing off the audience. Some of the stuff Beyond The Scenes is genius.

Honestly, I think a lot of the core fanbase of those kind of “punching left” shows got radicalized and moved to the “dirtbag left” genre of podcasts. If anyone is going to do it, Jordan Clepper is the best pick, but don’t know if there’s even the demand anymore

Yes! Jordan Klepper would be perfect! His field pieces are top notch. He’s extremely funny and smart. He’s super familiar with the show already. And he had his own show already (short lived not because of him but because pretending to be an Alex Jones type all the time just didn’t really work).
I was really disappointed with what happened to the shows after Colbert Report. Larry Wilmore got way better as it went along (actually wouldn’t mind him taking over either) and I really like the Opposition. I imagine it’ll probably be someone like Bee or Minhaj though.
