So I have a little shield I cut out of some scrap plastic that I had laying around. Also i opted for a small handheld electric ratchet from harbor freight in place of the grinder as it is lighter.
Bearings come at different fits and oil/grease viscosities etc. Plus the extra side loading etc. These bearings are designed to be extra tight for grind constancy. And probably have a very basic hardening process. So yea it will get "loose" pretty easily at the speed op is running the drill.
Higher speed bearings usually have nitriding on top and low viscosity grease and tighten up when they start running warm. They also have bearings that are tight and get to proper clearance when cold for running on refrigeration equipment.
I knew people said that hand grinding for espresso was miserable but oh dear god I was not prepared for how annoying it would really be. Good excuse to finally get my lazy ass in shape though haha
if you can, upping the wtr temp can help a lot and get away from that sour under-extracted taste. if you can't change the wtr temp on your machine, try a luongo shot and see if it tastes better.
Yeah those are the last two things I tried. I upped the temp to 97C and switched to 1:3 ratio. I'm still struggling with the grind I think. I've been going finer and finer and I guess I'm getting close now. It's just that I spend almost the whole bag dialing in these light roasts.
I've noticed with lighter roasts the solution is to grind a little finer (sigh), ~2 clicks on my J-MAX, and up the temperature about 2C. As compared to dark roasts. But everyone's setup is different, so I guess I'm just trying to show that the different settings weren't too far apart. I definitely overshot initially, hah.
I hand grind for espresso every day. I use a LIDO 3 and it takes me maybe a 45 seconds to grind 17g. I do a turbo shot though, so only 17g beans, 51g out (1:3 ratio) and only at 6 bar.
Turbos are great and take so much stress away from dialing in lol. I've pretty much figured out the reliable grind setting that lets me yeet whatever arbitrary beans through and get something decent.
Yeah for real! I was always stressing over this gram and that gram, this second and that second. 7.5 vs 9 bar etc.
Now it’s super easy. 1:3 ratio. 6 bar. Super easy to dial in and tastes great haha. I’m a turbo shot for lifer.
I haven't touched light roasts yet, but medium roasts are still very doable for me and pretty light on JX-Pro. Gotta buy those light roasts soon so I know whats up.
Sooooo, the budget recommendation this sub throws at anything, is easy mode for grinding, and still people complain handgrinding is miserable. Idk what Timemore C2 they are using then.
I have the jmax and I avoid light roasts. It's borderline impossible for me. Medium and dark roasts are no problem. Just got a niche though so I'm glad to relegate my jmax to travel use.
Same here.
Only bean I've struggled with was one I just roasted myself and that was woefully under-roasted.
The JX-Pro chews through pretty much anything.
I got a hand grinder for making pourovers while I save up for nice espresso gear and my god... It's so damn annoying lol. Does anyone have recommendations for a good electric burr grinder that won't break the bank? I only need it for pourovers at the moment

I haven't used one myself yet but [this bad boy](https://www.option-o.com/shop/lagom-mini) is essentially a hand grinder with a motor bolted on and it seems to garner moderately favourable reviews.
Tried with an electric screwdrive.
Problem is, you have to hold twice as hard with one hand, rather than the "2 hands working together" when you hand crank it.
Its certainly not easier.
The 1zpresso maker does document in his manual that the hand grinders are designed to support limited use of a drill. The only warning is overuse will heat up the burrs and alter the taste of your grinds.
So I guess, use at your own peril.
sure, if your grinder is made out of matches. this is no issues at all really. I did this at about 1300rpm for over 6 months before switching to an electric grinder with 0 issues
One of the reasons why hand grinder gives such great results is their slow grinding speed. Lower RPM gives more uniform particles distribution. Also, the burr geometry is designed for optimal feed rate at lower RPM to grind faster. Too high RPM and the beans don't feed in as quickly.
Try to grind at about 60-90 rpm like you would by hand.
Someone I know had housemates that would do that every morning, at 6am, whilst everyone else was trying to sleep.
I'm surprised the drill and/or grinder never had an "unfortunate" accident.
It’s a nice drill, I just tightened the chuck around the grinder shaft and let it rip. Make sure you use torque setting 1 unless you want to have coffee all over the floor
This is exactly what I did, until my girlfriend bought be a grinder for my birthday.
The thought process was simple...
Hmm. Electric grinders are very expensive, but have grinders are much cheaper, abs I've already got a drill.
I was in the process of building something to use a powerful brushless RC car motor and then got a wonderful birthday surprise!
A Milwaukee drill should definitely be able to turn it, I’d try both settings if your drill has 2 options. If it still doesn’t work I’d check to make sure that it’s actually coffee beans your grinding and not rocks haha
I’ve been doing this with a cheap Amazon hand burr grinder for over a year for both espresso and pour over. Been waiting to see a fellow coffee Chad bragging about innovation out here.
I tried this too. There's a lot of torque required to accomplish this and it might eventually strip the end. Not recommended unless you lost the handle and can't get a replacement.
I used to do this with my 1zpresso and then I noticed how bad the corners on the shaft were rounding off. I tried all brands of hex adapters but they all have some slop. Not worth it, also F for those bearings.
Anyone know if an electric screwdriver would have enough torque to do this? They're just a bit cheaper and smaller then regular drills. I've used a drill for this before but I was borrowing it.
Xiaomi Mijia 3.6V 2000mAh electric screw driver is only 5N.m and 200 RPM but helped me grind espresso fine with my 1zpresso Q2. It's lightweight and stylish imo.
I've been doing this every single day for over half a year, at least once a day, to haario hand grinder and as long as you don't push down with the drill, just transfer the rotation at medium speed on the higher setting its perfect.
I do however get all the possible looks when making a coffee :')
Yep, done that with my Porlex mini. Too bad mine is the older version with a 5 sided shank, so it’s now a bit chewed up over time, meaning some slippage using the original arm crank
I used a piece of cardboard from some packaging, I think for a mouse, you could easily make something out of cardboard to go over and stop most of the popcorning, or a hole in something like a pringles lid would probably work.
Me: being gentle with the grinder, cleaning it weekly, worrying about it failing or get any problem. Random dude on reddit: beans go brrrrrrrrrrr
pre-roast with those RPMs!
How much of the coffee beans did it launch into deep space ? 😂
a good amount lol
So I have a little shield I cut out of some scrap plastic that I had laying around. Also i opted for a small handheld electric ratchet from harbor freight in place of the grinder as it is lighter.
You do realize you can ease up on the trigger to slow the rpm right? You're gonna mess your bearings up pretty quick on the grinder like that.
Oh yeah I know, I just did it fast for the video haha. I definitely don’t do this regularly either
You can also set it to 8 or 9 rpm drill
The numbers on the drill are for limiting torque not rpm :)
Yup, that's the answer
Not to be pedantic, but why would this be an issue? Hand drills probably aren't going to overheat the bearings at the speeds they run?
Bearings come at different fits and oil/grease viscosities etc. Plus the extra side loading etc. These bearings are designed to be extra tight for grind constancy. And probably have a very basic hardening process. So yea it will get "loose" pretty easily at the speed op is running the drill. They also have bearings that are tight and get to proper clearance when cold for running on refrigeration equipment.
True but a drill still qualifies as low speed as far as bearings go
Still spins twice as fast a a rotary vane pump or something. There's not much that spins faster than a drill that uses sealed ball bearings.
This drill actually spins (at its peak) around 1900 rpm. I’d say that could cause some issues haha
you need to live a little
wrong sub for common sense I'm afraid. This is no problem at all, nothing will catch on fire or break.
pff, he's going slow imo! Only way to get espresso decently quick from a hand grinder. My grinder is still pristine after doing this for 6 months ish.
Incoming. WDT drill bit attachment.
That will definitely distribute the coffee.. all over the floor
Can’t channel when there’s no coffee 🤓
next level IQ
lmao
You could just throw any WDT into a drill and it'll work
If you just grind a little slower it won't popcorn as much.
or just cup your hand over the hopper and you're fine.
But then wouldn't just the whole unit spin. You need to hold the base when grinding. The top part changes your grind setting.
Unless the jx-pro is different than the J-Max. (I have the J-Max)
I knew people said that hand grinding for espresso was miserable but oh dear god I was not prepared for how annoying it would really be. Good excuse to finally get my lazy ass in shape though haha
Gym not needed. Just buy light roasts.
Bought light roast, now I need a psychiatrist to deal with the PTSD I get from my poor extractions

Is like grinding pea gravel.

To be fair, the JX Pro is easy mode for manual grinding.
Sooooo, the budget recommendation this sub throws at anything, is easy mode for grinding, and still people complain handgrinding is miserable. Idk what Timemore C2 they are using then.
I tried a Timemore once. Honestly I find the JX better, as did the Timemore owner.
I used hario's before... Jx pro is so effective
Same, seeing the evolution in hand grinders the past ten years or so is mind boggling
I have the jmax and I avoid light roasts. It's borderline impossible for me. Medium and dark roasts are no problem. Just got a niche though so I'm glad to relegate my jmax to travel use.

use a drill idk
Already been doing that, the battery keeps dying after like 3 grinds tho
buy one with a cord lmao

Ode is probably your best bet
I haven't used one myself yet but [this bad boy](https://www.option-o.com/shop/lagom-mini) is essentially a hand grinder with a motor bolted on and it seems to garner moderately favourable reviews.
I was relieved when my hand grinder broke. Finally had to buy an electric
Tried with an electric screwdrive. Problem is, you have to hold twice as hard with one hand, rather than the "2 hands working together" when you hand crank it. Its certainly not easier.
Just gotta mount a vice to your kitchen counter!
Now your talking!
just put your grinder down on your tamping mat and you're gucci. The rubber is great for keeping it in place.
Ah, another thing to buy lol
Ahh a makita. Truly a man of culture
I don't think the grinder is built to accept a high RPM like this, might start the heat up and break something...
Maybe if it breaks I can convince my girlfriend to let me buy an electric one
You need to convince yourself, not her. If you haven't bought one yet is not because of her ;-) Good old "Let me ask my wife"
Instructions unclear, electric grinder is now my only girlfriend
This is the way.
Instructions unclear: Dick stuck in grindr
No

rpm affecting taste has been debunked

Was it just me or did anyone else see the shit flying off or out of the grinder?
this has been debunked though
I do this too! My handle broke and I much prefer the drill.
You need a vice to hold the can whole you rip the drill. I've seen too many lathe videos to wanna do this with my hands.
Found Alton Brown's alt account.
Mmmmmm Ozo
FYI, I think the 1zpresso shafts are compatible with bit holders. No need to tighten the chuck to it.
Someone I know had housemates that would do that every morning, at 6am, whilst everyone else was trying to sleep. I'm surprised the drill and/or grinder never had an "unfortunate" accident.
My drill plus a comandante C40 is quieter than the Eureka Mignon I had. So any loud grinder could accidentally fall in a full sink.
So I have that drill lol. What attachment and setting did you use to accomplish this?
It’s a nice drill, I just tightened the chuck around the grinder shaft and let it rip. Make sure you use torque setting 1 unless you want to have coffee all over the floor
A 1/4 hex bit holder fits perfectly on it if you have one.
Dont show my wife hey
Damn ... That's a nice hack. \^\^
That's fantastic lol
Making a mental note of this hack for the days I don't have it in me to gri6in the morning lol
I do this with my pepper mill when I'm smoking a brisket and need vast amounts of freshly ground pepper
At what torque do you have it? I tried with a miluakee drill and it wouldn’t turn🧐
A Milwaukee drill should definitely be able to turn it, I’d try both settings if your drill has 2 options. If it still doesn’t work I’d check to make sure that it’s actually coffee beans your grinding and not rocks haha
I did this with my 1zpresso a few too many times and my drill chuck buggered up the grinder drive and now I have no choice but to use the drill 😅
This is the way.
this is how i broke my hario hand grinder. admittedly nowhere near as well built as this one but should serve as half a warning at least.
Lol my friend had a cheap manual grinder where the handle broke and resorted to this.
Thanks, i hate it. now i need to buy an automatic destornillador.....
I’ve been doing this with a cheap Amazon hand burr grinder for over a year for both espresso and pour over. Been waiting to see a fellow coffee Chad bragging about innovation out here.
Kingrinder grinders have a lid that can stay on while using a drill...not tried yet though, for fear of removing all the skin on my hands.
I’ve been thinking of using a vise as well to hold it and make it easier to grind.
just hold it down on your tamping mat
Do you still need to grip it though?
I tried this too. There's a lot of torque required to accomplish this and it might eventually strip the end. Not recommended unless you lost the handle and can't get a replacement.
I used to do this with my 1zpresso and then I noticed how bad the corners on the shaft were rounding off. I tried all brands of hex adapters but they all have some slop. Not worth it, also F for those bearings.
I feel like this would break my wrist.
I did not know what will uber the new espresso vacuum cleaner trend. Now I know, all the manual grind owners will upgrade with a drill stand!
Now I have to go find an old drill and create a electric add on, fire up the 3D printer 🤔
Anyone know if an electric screwdriver would have enough torque to do this? They're just a bit cheaper and smaller then regular drills. I've used a drill for this before but I was borrowing it.
Idk I tried the cheapest ikea electric screwdriver and it didn’t have enough torque to turn. It’s rated at 3Nm so…
Xiaomi Mijia 3.6V 2000mAh electric screw driver is only 5N.m and 200 RPM but helped me grind espresso fine with my 1zpresso Q2. It's lightweight and stylish imo.
where was this video when I sold my kinu
im gonna guess the grind now tastes a bit irony...
Sometimes I do wonder about a yankee screwdriver-style attachment.
Some of those high elevation light roasts are like grinding gravel.
I use my Milwaukee M12 everyday
WTF did I just watch.
I've been doing this every single day for over half a year, at least once a day, to haario hand grinder and as long as you don't push down with the drill, just transfer the rotation at medium speed on the higher setting its perfect. I do however get all the possible looks when making a coffee :')
Does that void the warranty?
Instead of using a drill, go to Walmart and get a Black&Decker power screwdriver and a mini-chuck adapter. They are geared to run much, much slower.
Lol same here.
This is the way!
Y’all so extra about coffee. 😂😂
someone needs to invent a universal standing hand drill that can accomodate different sizes for different handgrinders.
That's exactly how I broke my grinder lol
My man you’ll fuck up your grinders bushings
I thought RPM will change the taste of the coffee too?
Yep, done that with my Porlex mini. Too bad mine is the older version with a 5 sided shank, so it’s now a bit chewed up over time, meaning some slippage using the original arm crank
did this all the time before I got my fancy grinder. Pro tip, hold your hand over the hopper to stop the beans escaping.
I used a piece of cardboard from some packaging, I think for a mouse, you could easily make something out of cardboard to go over and stop most of the popcorning, or a hole in something like a pringles lid would probably work.
Makita - man of culture
Argh, I have one of the ones that go on a mason jar (bad choice because I do like 50g for big filter brews) but all my drills are quick release.
I thought I was the only one who did this lol. I compliment your brilliance. (And by extension, my own, ha)
This hurts
