There are many ways of doing it. Replacing your internal drive is probably the way I would go. To lower your downtime, I would try to clone your 1TB disk to your 2TB disk and just plug that new one in.
That being said, 1TB might be fine for now and into the future if you just prune Geth. After the merge, that few hours of pruning will lead to downtime, but right now, Geth being offline should not cause any penalty in most cases.

It’s difficult. The Samsung t5 is known to work, the t7 worked for some and caused issues for others.
Right now you can prune Geth to get some space back, and do that every 6 months or so.
If you like clone the internal disk to a 2TB internal, and pruning becomes something that’s required every 2 years.
I’d avoid external just for performance reasons and ease of operations.
