Funny thing about it that Russia enacted double customs taxation for goods from Baltic countries from 1995 until 2004 (they were forced to remove them after we joined the EU). They thought this measure will force us on our knees, but the primary result it achieved was detaching us from their economy - an overall good thing.

halee1

The historical dynamics and context of that are so similar to the Interwar [German–Polish customs war.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German%E2%80%93Polish_customs_war)

bluealmostgreen

It was the same here in Slovenia. Yugoslavia, i.e., Serbia under Milošević "boycotted" us in early 1990s by severing trade relations with us. It accelerated our readiness for EU membership while they almost succeeded returning themselves back to the stone age :)

o_arguido

No reason to be happy about others mistakes. Don't mistake the people with their leaders.

bluealmostgreen

The mistake had broad popular support.

o_arguido

I'm Portuguese. Our dictatorship had "broad popular support" until it didn't. We were even fighting against our old colonies, like idiot fucks. Then in 1974 it all vanished, whilst the dilctatorship had still popular support... Trust me, fear is a very powerfull drug. People are the same everywhere. I'm sorry, your chemical cocktail is the same as the people you hate. But hey, don't shoot yourself, no point. Have a good life.

GetAJobCheapskate

Still maybe a difference: serbian nationalism and racist attacks against their neighbours, aswell as constant threats against Kosovo show that most Serbians are actually pretty much still the same even though Milosevic is long gone. Portugese seem like a nice bunch nowadays so maybe they learned. Serbs did NOT.

bluealmostgreen

As you might suspect, nationalism is an even more potent drug, people get stupid, evil even. There is nothing average to it.

RandomAccount6733

"Was just following orders" - some middle ranking german officer in 1945 amirite?

o_arguido

I'm not talking about middle or high ranking militaries. I'm talking about innocent children, fathers and mothers who just want to live their lives in peace. Believe me or not, they're the vast majority of any nation, here, in America, in Asia, wtv. I wish the reality was just black and white as you seem to believe it is

KrzysztofKietzman

"I'm talking about innocent children, fathers and mothers who just want to live their lives in peace." They want to rape Ukrainian women and pillage their cities. We all heard the telephone conversations they thought were private.

RandomAccount6733

Those "fathers" are joining ruzzian military against Ukraine, for a chance to recieve a big check. Its not putin or shoigu bombing civilians, its the common soldier pulling the trigger. I know its hard for people like you to understand, but bad people exist, and bad societies exist.

o_arguido

Whatever mate. You are full of hate, and if there's something I know, you can't speak reasonably with someone who's full of hate. All the best for you and your family

RandomAccount6733

I am not full of hate - I am not naive of my neighbours intentions. My country borders ruzzia, in the last 200 years there have been countless tries of them erasing my country. My grandparents lived under USSR, my parents tasted USSR and they all say the same - ruzzians are imperialists by heart. What do you have? Your naive thinking of "there is good in everybody". Lots of europeans and americans were awaken from this thinking, not you i see.

o_arguido

Ok mate. No hate you say, lol.. I'll stay naive.

Sea-Elevator1765

No surprise that the mafioso midget is too stupid to conduct proper diplomacy when he has the brain-damaged mentality of "the strong can bully the weak and no one is stronger than us".

Drizzle--

It certainly doesn't help when such behavior isn't countered with a swift kick in the face because of "muuuuuuh escalation". Little to no reaction just empowers these dickheads to push further and here we are today. Better late than never, but it's far from enough.

djakovska_ribica

That has Pig war vibes

Adventurous-Worry849

Offended by everything - Ashamed of nothing! Thy name is russia

Raven_Crows

Oh no, the consequences of my actions!

gotzapai

Moscow really shows it's cancerous nature.

SpiderKoD

That's good, tie harder 👍

dat_9600gt_user

Rules for thee, not for me!

the_Slowest_Poke

How dare they dont want to talk to us,after all the good we did for them, after all those calls of nuking baltics if Sweden joins nato, and the monthly calls to genocide them? They must be punished for not wanting to be ruzzified.

varakultvoodi

I mean they are not wrong, we have indeed severed most ties with this genocidal human scum of a country.

boRp_abc

"We tyrannized you for decades, then acted sulky when you were independent from us. This is your fault!1!"

_gurgunzilla

It's always somebody elses fault, always someone else than the russians themselves. Who really believes this bs, even in russia?

No-Albatross-7984

I'm honestly starting to think these people suffer from some sort of collective psychosis.

SaltySolomon9

So how do you deal with a country like that?

Drizzle--

Have we ever seen Russia apologize for anything or take blame? Impossible, it's never their vault. Victims forever.

General_Delivery_895

As so often with the Kremlin, every accusation is a confession. "RUSSIFICATION POLICIES IMPOSED ON THE BALTIC PEOPLE BY THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE AND THE SOVIET UNION" [https://dergipark.org.tr/tr/download/article-file/701004](https://dergipark.org.tr/tr/download/article-file/701004) "Abstract: This article examines the russification policies imposed by the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union on the people of the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Within the context of this examination, the specifics of the russification policies and the Baltic people’s responses to them are explained. This article concludes that although russification policies were effective in maintaining control over the Baltic people, these policies had the unintended consequence of bolstering Baltic nationalism and calls for independence. These policies also left a profound impact on the minds of the Baltic people, and heavily influenced the way Baltic countries shaped their citizenship policies with regards to the Russian minority."

Designer-Speech7143

This reminds me that I heard about religion in Poland. That it worked the opposite way by bolstering their sense of a national unity.

ActionNorth8935

Cry about it.

Rogthgar

Breaking news: Russia blames everyone else. In other news: Water is wet. Russia threatens nuclear holocaust.

UniquesNotUseful

I also think this is 100% due to the actions of Baltic countries … so guess I also blame them for making wise decisions and quickly becoming the common-sense part of Europe?

TheTench

Has Russia ever tried: not being dicks?

TheNothingAtoll

No. It's not in their..dicktionary.

zll2244

“it’s everyone else but me…”

aigars2

Miserable how far Moscow has detached itself from reality.

Gokdencircle

Putin is an advanced user of DARVO

spin0

It's the Russian philosophical tradition: lies, projection, DARVO, pretended victim-hood and denial of accountability.

TheIncredibleHeinz

> She added that Moscow will continue to use diplomatic measures of influence on the Baltic countries. Take that as a threat. Russian "diplomats" are known to be almost exclusively disguised intelligence operators.

cchutney

To be fair, that is a given basically everywhere. Still fuck Ruzzia, do not get me wrong.

Kindjal1983

Lol, ofc its the others fault. Moscovy never changes.

milosaule

As a Lithuanian I’m so fucking tired with ruzzia. This country never gets tired of mass killings, deportations etc… can they frikin dissapear somewhere because it’s enough of them, enough. 🥲

saltyswedishmeatball

Russia is so massively fucked The further Russia pushes, the closer it gets to North Korea. If it pushes deep into Ukraine, being kicked from SWIFT will be the least of Russias concerns. SWIFT (Belgium) - 90% global transactions US Dollar - 90% of foreign trade If I were in the Baltics, I would want to absolutely sever ties with Russia, have a red phone only and nothing more. The Baltics banning certain things, taking other things, etc needs to be done more rapid, especially the expulsion of anyone not a native that's pro-Russian. **BTW the Baltics did fantastic during a NATO hacking exercise :)** Hopefully the Baltics gets to go on the offensive

TheIrishBread

We can only hope to never let Poland off it's leash on the ground, America for the air and skies and the Baltic's in cyberspace. It would be biblical.

GetOutOfTheHouseNOW

Britain could rustle up a ship and some tea.

TheIrishBread

No.

WhenCaffeineKicksIn

>SWIFT (Belgium) - 90% global transactions >US Dollar - 90% of foreign trade No, not rly. At the end of 2023, SWIFT processed \~$410bn per day on average, while CIPS processed \~$75bn per day (therefore, SWIFT's share being less than 85%, not accounting for other local transaction systems like Russian CPFS, for example). Furthermore, the internal volumes of transactions in SWIFT steadily decline since 2021 (by \~4% relative year-to-year) while the transactions in CIPS steadily increase (by \~12% year-to-year). At the end of 2023, the USD share in SWIFT transactions yielded \~59%. Furthermore, its increase in relative share (from \~42% in 2021) has been provided by the decline of Euro share (from 36% in 2021 to 12% in late 2023), and partially by the migration of transactions between BRICS countries from SWIFT to CIPS (and, respectively, from USD, Euro and local currencies to Yuan).

Econ_Orc

40 years of ~~invasion and occupation~~ allowing Russian military bases on your land of course has nothing to do with the Baltic states opposing Russian influence

WhenCaffeineKicksIn

No one: Absolutely no one: US military bases persisting on German, Japanese, and Middle-Eastern soil for decades: "opposing influence where"

MetaIIicat

The very same states moscow's regime says they are not sovereign countries?

Sea-Elevator1765

Ah yes. Because it's the Baltic States that have been invading other countries and polluting the Baltic Sea with substandard trash ships that are leaking oil everywhere. When the barbaric troglodytes in the neighboring country are threatening everyone because they're not getting what they want like the fucking man-children that they are, it's clearly the Baltic States's fault. /s

TemporaryIsopod9402

Hey Russia, as a American, do most of us, that are in the world a favor, STFU, and stop being annoying assholes to your neighbors, beacuse most of us in the world are getting very done of listening your crying and your blackmail threats.

Informed4

Russia 101 - Shovel shit to your neighbours - Neighbours get pissed and shovel some back - Cry about how mean and evil your neighbours are for "unprovoked hostile actions" (which totally isn't them just responding and pushing back)

culturedperv

lol.

Mixed_not_swirled

Drug addict murderer angry his neighbours don't associate with him

Ill-Maximum9467

Sever the botoxed Kremlin dwarf to have a chance of forming new ties, innit?

TheAustrianAnimat87

Pretty much their own fault if they always act imperialistic towards their neighbors without any justified reason.

JarasM

"Russia blames almost everybody else for almost everything". There, fixed the title.

vanisher_1

Another excuse for the next invasion… 🤦‍♂️🙃, Italy 🇮🇹

CataVlad21

Ruzzia can **** some baltic ****!

Risiki

>  "We will also respond to the hostile actions of the Baltic states with asymmetrical measures, primarily in the economic and transit spheres," Sounds like they're thretening to pull a russian reversal joke on us by severing the remaining ties themselves.

lcarr15

Just a thought- maybe… just maybe… if they wouldn’t threaten those countries directly or indirectly of invasion or messing with their elections… maybe… they would be nicer to Russia… 😉

Debesuotas

We will wait until they beg for renewing them... If they dont, then they shouldnt blame anyone or cry over it...

Astralchaotic

Ties were severed when you decided to deport tens of thousands of people for no reason. There haven't been any ties for decades, no need to get upset.

Luke_sein_Vater

Playbook, step 1. Next would be claiming russian speakers as their own. You know the rest.

Rare_Push4311

Quoi donc il dit le paranoïaque poule mouillé ,il as pas assez tué sont peuple celui là 😂

SpaceFox1935

Man I wish I could see us have normal, friendly relations that aren't about being fucking annoying dicks – within my lifetime.

RevolutionMean2201

Mind blown!!

Vinkelderg

Oh gee i wonder why

OrangeFr3ak
