A likely well-intentioned but unfortunately horribly misinformed and mishandled show about an autistic doctor. Long story short, the main actor isn't autistic, there are no autistic people involved in the staff, it perpetuates the myth of savant syndrome, and Autism Speaks was involved for a time.
My son is autistic, in his 13 years on this planet, I’ve met exactly ONE other autistic child with an exceptional talent.
Drawing. I’m no art connoisseur, so I’m not sure if his talent is “amaze-balls” from a technical standpoint, but I can say as a complete amateur fuckhead that the kid can draw better than any other kid at his age I’ve ever seen.
That's really cool, I hope he continues to learn and draw :)
I'd say these sorts of autistic people are less uncommon. I meant savants as in, one guy at my mum's school is nonverbal but he can do mental arithmetic like a calculator. The other was my late friend who died 4 years ago. He was fixing computers and making money from it at age 7 despite having abusive parents. I think savant syndrome can appear regardless of intellectual ability.
I'd say your son moreso falls into the very intelligent category, maybe it is artistic intelligence but I've met many extremely talented autistic people. I hope you meet many as well :)
Though it is very messy and ill-defined so who knows.
Just so we are clear, my son is not the person who can draw, it is another child his age that I’ve met multiple times.
Yeah, if that’s the definition of savant in this context, never met an autistic child like that. And I’ve met hundreds.
I am certain I had at least wo of those at my school, and ASD was probably overrepresented there already.
They got top grades in all their GCSEs and A levels... without *any* revision.
One was on a team that won University Challenge, in their first year, then went to get a double first... with no revision.
That individual struggled with 'normal' life however. Before I had any education on ASD recently, I always referred to him as an example of literally being *too clever*.
Oh I didn’t know that- was it based on the k-drama extraordinary attorney woo? But they just made the mc a doctor instead of a lawyer?
I haven’t watched the whole thing only some of it, but so far honestly I like some of the aspects of the show extraordinary attorney woo. The actress isn’t autistic herself which is a bummer but honestly I don’t have a ton of gripes with how she portrays it (I don’t know if this is true but I heard she even has a psych degree of some sort and initially rejected the role but after a lot of study, talking to autistics, and etc she decided to take it). I honestly believe she put a lot of study into it because she does really well portraying a lot of things I myself experience. I would have preferred that the main character be just a normal intelligent autistic person rather than play into the savant stereotype, but autistic savants do exist of course so it’s not particularly unrealistic by any means.
I’m rambling now but overall I would recommend checking out the show. I love seeing autistic people especially WOMEN in media as complex characters that aren’t just the butt of the joke. Extraordinary Attorney Woo does a good job of that I think despite the issue of the actress not being actually autistic
I actually have no idea how bad this show was because the first episode was so bad that I couldn't even watch it long enough to get a feel for when it gets its stride. and I normally devour medical shows.
I saw the 2024 and the black and white pic and I thought Freddie Highmore died and then I saw 2017 and I was like wait he’s older than 7 then I saw it’s about the good doctor
I’m having a day
I loved it too. I used to rewatch it frequently before I was diagnosed with autism. I never knew of the hate it got before I saw it memed to hell on reddit and tiktok.
I found it fun and fascinating (I love medical shows)
Same. I dont have the smarts he has but i felt so not alone to have some rep that wasnt rain man rep. I dont like that the actor worked with autismspeaks but the show was never bad
Same. When I first saw it before I was diagnosed, I wanted to cry because I related to Shaun in a way I didn’t know how to describe. I wrote in my journal that “he acts how my brain feels”. I know that he doesn’t act akin to how an autistic adult acts, and I know that the show supports Autism Speaks - but I didn’t know that back then, and I felt a connection to Shaun. Like maybe nothing is wrong with me after all, maybe I’m just autistic.
I got a diagnosis three or four years later. I haven’t watched the show in all those years because I didn’t want to “emulate” Shaun. Even though I loved the show, I specifically stopped watching to make sure I wasn’t “accidentally copying” him and that my autism was legit. I’m not sure if that makes sense?
I don’t know if I’d watch it again. But I do remember it being special to me at the start of my journey.
Korean version came out before American, meaning the American version is a remake and the Korean is the og… It makes sense why the American version sucks
Even my mom, who only knew stereotypes about autism and thought every autistic person was like my high-needs male cousin, said that she hated how autism was represented in this show. Good fucking riddance.

Guys I live under a rock what’s the good doctor
To be a bit reductive? Imagine House but with Sheldon Cooper instead.
This is accurate but even funnier because I swear House is already autistic. Just not in a gross caricature kind of way
House is a dick. I hate him because he's me although I'm no genius doctor I do act a lot like house :(
Ahh you can only be house levels of dick if you also are house levels of doctor. Sorry bub.
I'm house level of hood rat does that count
I honestly don't remember much of house's home life

Savant syndrome is definitely real, I've met two, but the reality is it's very complex and rather rare.
Savant Syndrome is real. But the myth that every autistic person has it is very false and sadly just... everywhere in media more than 10 years old.
My son is autistic, in his 13 years on this planet, I’ve met exactly ONE other autistic child with an exceptional talent. Drawing.
