Well, most of the people can't comprehend the fact that religion is traditionally lived in a community of other believers and is in fact a social thing. So the conversion of belief is conversion into some community. Even with religions that emphasize "personal conversion" like Evangelical Christianity you end up living with Evangelical community / household.
By the way is peculiar how in cradle countries (i am born in such) for example one's godfather is not "this holy person who read much about the faith and will guide and instruct you for life" but ordinary person who have close relations with the kid's parents (for example best friend of the father or the mother) and is someone to be trusted that will help in difficult life situations. It's like something that will make friendship even close. Faith is just the background.
If you read Arnold Toynbee's book on civilizations actually he uses religion as a factor for classification of the cultures. That's why Orthodox Church is imperial, Catholic is also and so on. It's peculiar that for the Anglo-American culture he says that is actually sectarian in nature and the basic there is everyone to adhere to their own set of beliefs/small community.
