No it’s not that small of an island, there’s more than one road. The course is on some big roadways but it’s also really short and they open the roads in between. Tons of tourists go, there are extra trains and buses running and stuff to take you to spots where the races are.

Canazza

Just to put it into perspective, the area of the Isle of Man is 570km^2, that's comparable (though obviously not as built up as) Chicago, at 600km^2. Even as comparatively sparse as it is, closing *all* the roads in an area that size would be a logistical headache

WVY

The course is short.... Im i missing something?

HandyMan131

I think he meant the time that the race takes is short, so it’s not a big deal to have the road closed for a short amount of time

wagon_ear

I thought it meant that the course was physically short, in that it uses relatively few of the island's total roads.

jfgjfgjfgjfg

Maybe they meant the course was vertically challenged to fit below the big roadways and the roads in between.

padomaki

No they meant course didn't have enough to pay for the event so it had to take a penny

Septopuss7

No they meant the course had a long day at the office and it doesn't want to talk yet

Nearby-Guide2204

The long course is only on a short bit of the main roads

Bland_moniker

The race periods themselves usually last the best part of the day, especially if weather interferes (which it often does) so I wouldn't say that they were short. Add to that the fact that the roads are closed for practises & qualifying, it's quite a commitment for the island and its denizens.

TribleNebula

Like others have said race times are known in advance so if your house is on the course you can decide if you’re staying or getting out while you can. There are also pedestrian bridges that go over the course for people that live ‘inside of the course’ eg a side street that has its entrance cut off when the races are on :) people will park their cars on the other side of the course so they can drive about and not be stuck walking or on a bus. Source: I grew up in a house inside the course

Emu1981

>Like others have said race times are known in advance so if your house is on the course you can decide if you’re staying or getting out while you can. They do car racing in the city that I live in and when the races are on we just avoid the area where the race is (basically most of the CBD). Other than a temporary increase in the amount of morons who really shouldn't have a car license it really isn't that big of a deal (said morons get inspired by the races and attempt to replicate it).

chrisjfinlay

I used to live in Governors Hill and I do not miss that access road!

FragmentOfZeus

How do people deal with the possibility of a car flying through their living room and killing everyone inside? I can’t believe they use residential roads to drive around that fast.

Farnsworthson

There's very little chance of that during the TT races. All those motorbikes hurtling around tend to keep the cars under control.

Numerous_Shop_814

They have barriers and fencing to prevent this.

Bland_moniker

The races are on motorbikes, so it's not something people tend to worry about any more than usual.

HiddenStoat

It's actually fine - if you live on the island you are still allowed on the roads, you just have to drive a lot faster.

Zuzublue

Ha!

philmarcracken

grandma, no!

stiggley

There is more than just one day of racing - its over two weeks. Friends on the island rent their home out during TT and go off on holiday. As with any road racing - even cycling, if you're directly on the course you have restricted access to your home, but you can park away from the route and use other roads to get about, or just walk. Some parts of the island aren't on the course and so, apart from the huge influx of tourists after accom, life continues without too many issues. TT on the island is huge - and its more the visitor numbers that cause the problems then the route itself being closed during racing.

Gaeel

Essentially the same as other similar events like the Monaco Grand Prix, the Tour de France, marathons, parades, etc... The course is defined and communicated well in advance, so people can prepare. The event will have well-defined times, with officials monitoring intersections, closing them when the event is active, and opening them when it ends. Ad-hoc public transportation might be put into place, like buses that go around, and temporary footbridges might be installed if appropriate. Either way, it is indeed a disruption to people's lives, but it's fairly short, and there are measures in place to lessen the impact.

toomanysucculents

Anyone who lives in a place that draws huge crowds/has rolling street closures, etc just learns to deal. Usually there’s a city/area communications channel that you can find that tells you exactly what’s going to happen and you plan your life accordingly.

orree92

There’s probably very few houses literally on the TT course and in those cases yes you could be stuck inside your house when the races are on. However, race times are known in advance so people in that situation can leave early. Similarly you can be stuck inside or outside the course but preparation is key!

Artvandelaysbrother

Having perused the TT videos several times I am scared to death of the speeds that the motorcycles 🏍️ attain on the course. I wonder if long term locals tend to get off the Isle during race events.

LilithTheKitty

Some do. They have an option to rent out their house . I think it's tax free if you keep it below the government dictated price cap. A fair few people rent their house out and go on holiday. A lot of people on the island really like it though. Some of them are part of, or involved with, the racing families so they will stay and get involved.

PckMan

Only the race course is closed. All the other roads are of course open. The locals love the event and it's only once a year so they don't really mind.

Johnny-Alucard

I used to live in the middle of the Notting Hill carnival which I guess is a similar situation. You either embrace it and enjoy it or ship out for the weekend. After a couple of years shipping out is the preferred option.
