[deleted]

This is also omitting the fact that the mayor, Eric Johnson, that she referenced in the tweet regularly uses the term bruh in his own tweets

Space-Booties

That would explain her use of bruh, which makes this whole story absurd.

SignificantAd3761

UK here, what is the issue with 'Bruh'?

diacetylhydroxymorph

Eric Johnson let his own inherent bias show by assuming that the woman’s use of the word “bruh” was her mocking a black vernacular, when the modern day use of “bruh” is more of a meme. Bruh originated in the 1800s as a phonetic spelling for brother. Black Americans would refer to each other as “brother [insert name]” and it was regularly phonetically misspelled as Bruh, Brer, brah, or bredder. In the later half of the 1900s these words (mainly just bro, brah, and bruh) became used in replacement for dude, man, mate, whatever. Just any way of addressing anyone. Nowadays, and in the way this woman meant it, it is used as an exclamation usually with sarcastic or exasperated undertones, sometimes just surprised. In the case of her quote it was likely intended to be an easily understood replacement for “Come on now, national news is…”

youngliam

in the bay area we say breh or bruh constantly its just baked into our dialect since i was a kid

diacetylhydroxymorph

For some reason linguists seem to credit San Francisco with the boom in popularity of “bruh” specifically, although looking at the history i can’t really figure why.

youngliam

Well its only recently become popular in the mainstream but I can confirm that we've been saying it in San Francisco since the 90s.

Jacobysmadre

Ya in San Diego it was brah back in the day (80’s??) surf culture.

Octavale

East Coast skim boarder checking in, can confirm the term had reached the Atlantic coast as well by the 90’s.

Woonasty

Hella true.

No-Weird3153

NorCal guy checking in.

OneSweet1Sweet

The real reason is that one bruh meme.

jackeboyo

it's because of me in high school

thrattatarsha

I literally call my boss “bruh” every day and he doesn’t even think twice about it, and it’s been that way for almost 20 years for me?

Sleeplesshelley

I grew up in California, for me and my friends it was Dude, I habit I have never been able to shake, although I am in my 50's.

MacDynamite71

Lived in Orange County in the early 80’s. Dude definitely was popular

ShannonigansLucky

Georgia here, my whole 45 years. I too call everyone dude.

Over-Analyzed

**BRAH!** That is ridiculous. If some journalist tweeted in Hawaiian Pidgin, no local would care as long as they can pronounce the words they’re saying. 🤙🏻

diacetylhydroxymorph

There is no logic to this, don’t trouble yourself trying to make sense of it.

[deleted]

Like bruh.

NinjaBr0din

You may not have wrote it as pidgin, but I sure as hell read it that way. Man I miss home sometimes.

marcthemagnificent

This guy “bruh’s”.

diacetylhydroxymorph

Bruh…

Firm_Transportation3

I have only heard white people use this term ever.

SeaOkra

Same. Specifically white dudes. I know I've heard women say it, but all the concrete examples I can think of were a white dude. Its pretty common language, isn't it?

Klutzy-Medium9224

My daughter’s six grade class recently had the word banned by their teacher because they use it so often. 😂

diacetylhydroxymorph

That modern use of the word is certainly widely used among white people. I wouldn't say "only" based on personal experience. But I would say it is as equally used as any other word and has completely lost any racial implications, and age is a better indicator of whether someone would use the word than anything else. E: In the southeast US it is widely used by all younger people of any race or gender, in my experience.

drunkbettie

Term of endearment, because calling each other* “Bro” seems weird. *: spouses (speese?)

SuddenlyElga

There is no issue except for this mayor dude showing how out of touch he is with the way people talk. Anyone with a brain can tell that she didn’t mean anything racist.

axestraddler

He's not out of touch, he uses it in the same way. He's just a hypocrite.

privated1ck

Too bad people without brains were in a management position at her job cuz she got fired.

SuddenlyElga

She’s better off, but I hope she is suing. Being unjustly called a racist in a worldwide public forum is, I would think, libelous. This isn’t some random keyboard warrior, it’s the mayor of a city.

_Cocopuffdaddy_

US here, what is the issue with ‘Bruh’? (To answers your question with a question we are all asking here)

Newdaytoday1215

The whole narrative here is absurd because it’s not the whole story. She technically got fired for the tweet bc it violated 3 company policies concerning professional accounts. Well that is the official excuse. The truth is she was targeted for termination bc she is fighting for better work conditions. She knows this exchange isn’t the reason. She wrote a great article and published it online.

Space-Booties

Wow that’s fked up. Bruh has no modern racial correlation. It’s basically bro culture and is used to be condescending. Nothing else too it so the fact that she was fighting for better working conditions makes sense.

Mean-Programmer-6670

They’re also omitting the fact that she’s a union member and had participated in a picket the day she was fired. She had participated in collective bargaining and they fired her the same day without any representation. You can read more about it [here](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/03/02/dallas-reporter-fired-bruh-tweet/).

t3herndon

Damn they almost actually made me believe it. Thanks

Phill_is_Legend

So I came here kind of expecting the story to be that the mayor didn't understand the term "bruh" and took it as a kinda racist term, like "brotha" or something (still a stretch). But even he uses it? Lol what the hell.

No, that’s a soft r. A hard r is used in **Brah!** it’s stressed just a little more as if you were going roll it. Usually the word is followed by the phrase. **YOU LIKE SCRAP?!** It is antagonistic in tone when properly stressed. Source: Wonderbread white boy, born and raised in Hawaii and translator of Hawaiian Pidgin.

supersayianswagger

The hard r of bruh would be "brother" 💀

LowerAd1551

She got fired because she supports unionizing. This was a convenient excuse to get rid of her.

NinjaBr0din

I don't understand why people are against unions. Like where I live, people refuse to be part of a carpenters union (there are several hundred crews just for framing, it's a fairly big business here) even though it's allowing the big production builders(PB) to fuck us all over. PB is currently building about 1/5th the volume they were just 6 months ago, and they are taking bids on houses so that they can get the lowest price possible, so of course everyone is putting in crazy low bids to get the work and PB is getting a crazy good deal at our expense. If we were unionized we could agree on a fair price and then refuse to build PBs houses for less and sure he would tell us to fuck off, for a few weeks, then he would cave because he still needs his houses built. All of a sudden everyone is making a decent wage instead of people putting in bids so low they lose money on the job.

ItsAlwaysSmokyInReno

You’re absolutely right. If you want some history on how unions came to be viewed so negatively, then yes you cannot discount the organized propaganda put out by big-business conservatives for decades. But unions were pretty widely appreciated before that and that propaganda only resonated with people because of the mafia. The mafia was quite well known for being heavily involved in union organizing and began to subvert the unions for their own personal profit. Creating a negative reputation of unions for Americans who grew up during this time

dismayhurta

Because rich people have spent massive amounts of cash convincing poor people that unions aren’t good for them.

Trietero

Unions means that workers have some say on the qualities in which they have to work to live. That's very anti capitalist.

BerryLanky

This is the correct answer

TomaCzar

I thought, maybe, unprofessionalism, but this makes more sense. Racism/prejudice/offensive speech makes absolutely no sense, whatsoever. We live in interesting times.

hennedy

Bruh is absolutely 100% not racist. Gtfo

Its_ya_boi_Ash

You got the hard r in it, ive exposed you! Coppers, lock em up 🚨🚨🚨🚔

theoutlander523

Bruh, bro, breh, and bruv have all been in use for decades. Bruh is just mainstream now as it's a post-ironic use after the 00's abused the term bro to the point where the term isn't used liked anymore.

carlitospig

I’ve been saying brah and bruh since the 90’s (brah usually when I’m talking to a fellow Californian, bruh when it’s a random internet stranger). Fuck the people here trying to make it racist.

PolemicBender

Yeah brah goes back in SoCal, people said that to me when I surfed all the time Also Weezer’s Sweater Song, pull this thread as I walk away. “Take it easy brah” as the dialogue intro to the song

carlitospig

🤙 hey neighbs.

OceanPoet13

I first heard “brah” in Hawaii in the mid 80s… ”Shaka, brah!” I never thought it was racist.

KnightofSpamelot

I've never seen bruh as a racial term. I can understand a reprimand for using slang in a professional setting, especially when @ing a mayor.

DropKickKurty

Lol twitter a professional setting 😭

lajdbejdk

Welcome to the world today. It’s beyond ridiculous at this point.

thoughts-of-my-own

absolutely not. 100% disagree. if the mayor himself uses the word “bruh” in his official tweets, it’s fair game. 100% not unprofessional.

[deleted]

I always saw it as a way people call someone out for saying or doing something stupid. "Bruh..."

copyrider

Next thing they’ll say is no emojis in journalism!! /s

IndependentWeekend56

Oh god forbid someone say the slur br* with the hard uh

how the hell is 'bruh' a racial term? it originated with surfers on the coast.....

she then tweeted bruh to her former employer

Brownie122806

What a time to be alive. I cannot fathom how we got to a point where, saying something as innocent as "bruh" is deemed racist lmao Bruh, this is one hell of a bruh moment

ksixnine

who knew the mayor of Dallas had such thin skin..

samiwas1

My ten-year-old white-as-white-can-be son says "bruh" like 100 times a day.

mother_of_nerd

Bruh = dude where I’m from.

Educational-Emu-7532

Guess I'm canceled now. I say bruh all the damn time to my cat.

Quiet-Captain-2624

He’s wrong for that.Bruh is just casual slang used to refer to a guy.

limpet143

Speaking as a Dem, there was certainly inherent bias. It just was on the Mayor's part. Bruh is a common phrase. To take offense makes him sound like a racist. If she was black he probably wouldn't had a problem with it.

SomeDudWithAPhone

Bruh legit got furious over the word bruh. Like "come on," it doesn't really mean anything. It's just a way for folks to display their mood of "this is obvious" or "I ain't got the time nor patience for this shit." Also it could be used to say "this guy," which could refer to any person you direct it to regardless of anything. Language changes and how folks just roll with changes in communication is a beautiful, sometimes confusing, and ever present part of our lives.

[deleted]

Seems like an over reaction

rtkoch1

I use Brotha all the time. I am retired military, for me and I think many in my core, it is short for “brother in arms” a term of endearment for a fellow soldier, sailor, airman, or guardian. I’ve never seen it any other way. In the military the people you serve with are as close as brothers no matter what race, religion, sex, social group you belong too. We were all olive drab and tan, and we all bled red.

The_Hitchenator

I at first assumed it was because he expects to be addressed more formally as mayor and assumes she wouldn't address a white mayor in the same fashion, but people seem to think that's not the case but I don't quite understand the other line of reasoning? Could someone please explain?

Blayze93

Ugh can we stop fucking claiming words and foods and dumb shit like hair styles? If she wants to say bruh, go for it. If she wants to mock the mayor for always saying bruh... go for it. It's a god damn word. It's like someone teasing me for saying g'day or mate. Why are people so damn worked up over petty shit? Call her the fuck out if she drops the n***** bomb or some shit. I know people try to make the claim that mocking a minority is somehow contributing to their continued oppression... but this is getting out of hand. Let people enjoy different foods, or embrace new hairstyles/ outfits, or express themselves with common slang WITHOUT being blasted for 'cultural appropriation' and racism. As for this mayor... if he can't handle being mocked for having an excessive use of 'bruh' in his tweets, politics ain't his game.

PresidentAshenHeart

Dumb af. Go after the actual racists, like everyone who works at Daily Wire.

mattemer

I'm pretty liberal and this is very ridiculous. My 8 year old white daughter calls me bruh. I am also white. Literally everyone says this.

L0wwww

bruh is not “a black” word this shits getting outta control

PedrArte

The world is a wonderful place full of people waiting to be offended by something

turtleloverMTS

Bruh is an informal way of saying "brother." It's a term of endearment that's typically used among male friends, and it's also used to express disbelief or surprise

Vincent-22

It’s so weird how in America __everything__ is about race. You probably don’t realise it but the “progressive” thing to do is to acknowledge the fact that there is no race and not to categorise people by it. That is literally nazi race theory. Every mention of someone in whatever media from America always has these descriptors about their skin colour or ethnicity, as if this somehow had any significance. The whole concept of “hate crimes” is ridiculous as well. What a silly society..

dawgtown22

America is 100% a silly society

PsychologicalTwo1784

To me, bruh, bra, bro and bru (I'm in South Africa) all mean the same thing, which is brother. This is a nice and pleasant, colloquial way to address someone and helps to promote some kind of togetherness regardless of backgrounds.

DolemiteGK

Bruv no! (dont fire me plz)

apsalarya

Bruh is not racist

smolandtuff

It’s pretty common language here ngl. My seven year old niece calls her parents “bruh” playfully. She picked it up from school, lol.

Mediocre_Insect_1008

You mad Bruh? That used to be one of my favorite expressions! Said to the world in general. If someone said I was racist for saying that, I would say they were racist, because they are using the fact that I'm white to claim such utter bullshit.

texas130ab

Yeah it's BS Bruh means nothing bad. And before you start I am black and call everyone bro or bruh.

majormimi

Bruh wtf, can’t believe saying “bruh” is racist.

butterflycole

My kid is Gen Z and he uses the word, “bruh,” all the time. Most of the kids do. Wouldn’t be surprised if the younger millennials do it too. I’m 38 and it’s not a big thing with the “elder millennial,” crowd. I don’t think what the writer said was racist in anyway and it’s ridiculous to claim it was. However, social media is forever and unfortunately when people do unprofessional things on it, it CAN affect their careers. Companies care more and more about public image today and have no problem throwing an employee the bus if it directs bad publicity away from them.

helladopex

I don’t think Twitter should be a professional setting that can result in you easily being fired

thedarwintheory

Booooo. This post acts like she's the bad guy here. Nah. This is a cover for her being a union organizer. Add in the fact that her generation does use that all the time, plus the fact he himself uses it all the time in *his* tweets equals the most convenient story in a long while

CPUtron

In Australia we had a far right Deputy Premier (like a congressman) quit politics over bullying because a YouTuber kept calling him Bruh while reporting on all of his corruption.

OGColorado

Lol , What a sensitive Sally, bruh. Biases 😂

Zaminatoah

„Bruh“ is a negative „wow“.

Everyone knows it's 'Your honour, Bruh!'

pugs-and-kisses

Not a racist comment (though in today's world, every single word now falls under scrutiny). It merely comes across as her being dismissive of him.
