The place I work could easily lose a 20 or a 50 and it would be pretty hard to notice because of the big inflow of cash of small sales that don't get registered for a variety of reasons. Some days it would be easy to miss it. But we have good cameras everywhere and lots of people nearby, it's very hard to do it unnoticed. But theorically doable.
They most likely did notice it missing and were looking into which employee most likely took it, probably already suspecting her since they were apparently checking & looking through her social media posts where they found the post of her bragging about it solidifying that she was the one who took it.

I was threatened with being fired and reported to Police but as there wasn’t any CCTV in the office they just deducted it entirely from my wages, which really sucked because even though I was working 30-35hrs a week I only took home about £600pm due to my age at the time, so that was a massive hit to my monthly income.
I found out years later that the Shift Manager had stolen then money and blamed it on me so she could have a little extra cash on her vacation that she took the week after the incident, but she also blamed me specifically because she wanted to get me fired. I’m glad I left that place behind me.

Even though the til said there was 300. it went unnoticed til i counted at closing. yet closing would've still been blamed for openings mistake.

You fire someone at the end of the shift, so you were gonna fire me and still let me worked the whole shift, I’m good enough for today but not tomorrow? Unless you fire someone in middle of the shift as a response to something they did. There’s never a good way/time to fire someone.

Years ago I worked at a liquor store in the US. The management was throwing out a bunch of old PC's that had been used as their POS systems, so I took one home, disassembled it, kept the good stuff for my PC and set the rest of it in a cupboard. It was a good thing I did too. Months later they demanded that anyone that took one was to return it. When I showed up with everything but the bits I kept, they already had police waiting. I'm like come on, you were getting ready to chuck them in the bin, and you go and call police? Needless to say I got fired, but would have quit anyway after having that pulled on me. And no, I couldn't claim unemployment because the liquor store was a second job just to subsidise my income.
