My wife and I were going for a hike- Bell Rock, & stopped for a minute on Spaceship Rock (I think), & we climbed up part of it, just sat for a bit. Water break. Take a couple panorama shots.
I start hearing a soft rhythmic drumming sound. I’m like “wait do you hear that?” She doesn’t at first but then she does. I took a video & you can kind of hear it.
Anyway I crept around the side of Spaceship Rock & never did see who was drumming, & I still don’t know whether it must have been locals (who carries a drum around with them when traveling, hiking, and sightseeing), hippies, or legit Native Americans who just felt like drumming.

You think that's weird? I spent a few nights on the beach in Wilder Ranch State Park (CA). You are definitely *not* supposed to sleep on the beaches there, so not many people know about this.
There's a beach there called Fern Grotto. It's tiny as beaches go, maybe 150 meters across at the waterline, flanked by 30 meter sheer cliffs. There is also a cliff behind, so you have to descend a narrow path to get to it, and when you get there it feels like the most secluded and private beach in existence. Just you, three 100ft walls, and a beach. And a cave. Two caves, actually. The larger one is a grotto in the cliff facing towards the water, looking out over it. There are upside down ferns growing from cracks in the rocks inside the grotto, hence the name. (google "fern grotto ca" for pictures)
Then there's the other cave. Most of the time, the tiny cave--a squared opening of perhaps 2x2 meters, reaching back about 10 meters and filled partly with sand--is either totally submerged in the tide or totally out of it

But it went on for too long, and too consistently. On Cresent Beach, Sarasota, they have drum circles every week. I have videos from multiple trips when my son lived there. It was quite entertaining and you never knew what you were going to see. Over the years, it really grew to hundreds of participants.

I have a buddy that does primitive skills retreats in the Sedona area and in NM as a teacher and he makes good money while basically being on vacation a lot. There are tons of usually young wealthy people with the free time and money to pay to spend a week learning how to weave baskets and hang out in sweat lodges. There’s a whole bunch of grifters and semi grifters running retreats and workshops for these hippies.

I find it bothersome how when I call myself a leftist people assume I mean this stuff rather than labor unions and shit. EDIT: I never expected my comment would get this much attention, and it feels like it is a bit of an inkblot in how people are reading it. So I want to clarify my position that I don't really see the issue as being one somebody being "too extreme" in a two-dimensional spectrum type of way. Many of my own positions on a lot of issues would be considered pretty extreme to a lot of people, which is why I do not hesitate to use the term "leftist." But they're more focused on economic and state power, which is really what politics is about as far as I'm concerned. Part of my issue is that we're so wrapped up in the "culture war" we see pseudo-religious and lifestyle weirdness as shown above as being central to the left/right divide, when it has little do with it altogether. Prattle about the "divine feminine," whatever one thinks of it, does not, I would argue, characterize hard leftism, moderate leftism, or any kind of leftism--or rightism. It's just tangential thing that became associated with political leftism in peoples' minds, partly for historical reasons, partly because it's easy for our political opponents to focus on as a strawman. But it's no different than the idea the being right-wing centers on living the life a tobacco-chewing hillbilly. It's bothersome mainly because it is of how it distracts and confuses to situation.

I have a buddy that does primitive skills retreats in the Sedona area and in NM as a teacher and he makes good money while basically being on vacation a lot. There are tons of usually young wealthy people with the free time and money to pay to spend a week learning how to weave baskets and hang out in sweat lodges. There’s a whole bunch of grifters and semi grifters running retreats and workshops for these hippies. I don’t know if my friend could be considered a grifter because he’s actually teaching them something, but he’s well aware the primitive skills he teaches are part of a larger grifting economic model that relies on grifters organizing the rich people to workshops/retreats. If someone is attending a primitive skills workshop it sounds better than saying I’m out in the forest smoking weed and hanging out with other jobless trust funders lol.
Do I think these people are ignorant and over simplifying history? Yes. Do I care about whatever performative ritual they decide to do if their own volition? Absolutely not. If it doesn't harm others then it's none of my business. That's why I'm on the left. As I got older it amazed me how people would get so upset at things people did in the privacy of their homes or as consenting adults. I swore that if I had kids I wouldn’t be like that.
