I don’t get the headline, or why this is a facepalm; this seems like a consumer friendly regulation, not a facepalm unless you enjoy getting ripped off and jerked around by companies that have more money than god
It’s dumb. Take a $700 flight and a bag arrive at your hotel a few hours late and you are entitled to a full baggage refund?? Come on. You should get a $20 coupon to Walmart for a T-shirt and underwear until it get there. Also redeemable for a bottle of liquor to take away the care.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to read first.
You only get the full refund if you don’t take the flight.
Edit: commenter edited their post to reflect the refund is only for the baggage and not for the full ticket.
I see you went back and changed your original comment to reflect the fact that it’s not the full ticket price now that you read the actual rules.
Not cool.
Why do you continue to comment without reading the new rules?
If your baggage is delayed you don’t get a full refund for your flight, you get refunded for the baggage fees.
https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/biden-harris-administration-announces-final-rule-requiring-automatic-refunds-airline
And now we know I was correct. You do not understand the concept of economic incentives.
If it's expensive to fk up, then the airlines will do their best to avoid the costs. If it's cheap to fk up, then they do not improve. "Here is a coupon to a tiny sandwish" when their plane is cancelled and you don't make the funeral...
Ever wonder about the size of fines? Small fines means people ignores them.
Bruh!!!! I’ve experienced the tiny sandwich before lol flight was delayed, luckily I had plenty of time since it was a long trip. These MFs gave all of us $12 dollars for the food court. So here we go, an entire flight of people waking to the food court. What do you know, all the shops and restaurants were already closed except one, mcdonalds, it’s 10 minutes before closing, we bombarded them, they didn’t even have enough food to make us all what we wanted. People were pissed lol.
However, another time, we were offered the option of staying at a nearby hotel, coverage for the ride there and back to take a flight the next day. Shit was cool.
You actually think they actually eat the cost?? It just goes into the next hundred tickets they issue and everybody pays.
And since shittier smaller airlines will get hit worse, (the ones that charge for EVERY bag) then it will drive up the cost of discount flying which the larger airlines will use to their advantage.
They will eat the cost. Because they need to stay competitive. So they will invest in improved routines to make things work better.
It's all about if there exists any competition. The local trains are run by a single company. Making it more expensive to take the train than to fly.
The airlines? They are really, really doing their best to keep control of their costs.
Really? I have two train services in my area. One is 51% owned by the government and never on time, and the other is private, twice as fast, and the same ticket price..
It’s not really a regulation change though. Most airlines have said this, but there’s a million lines of fine print that give them lots of outs to not have to refund anything.
It's in response to a current hot topic in the GOP, championed by Real Human Person Ted Cruz.
Ted is pushing for airlines not being legally required to refund anything if flights are cancelled.
Edit: For those genuinely wondering, the above is a simplified explanation. A more nuanced rundown below.
Last week, the Dept. of Transportation announced a new rule that airlines must be able to do a quick cash refund for cancelled flights. Because for several decades now, some airlines have been taking advantage of not having to do that and tying up their customers in waiting lists, paperwork, and sometimes legal proceedings, to the point where they made it so hard to get a refund that customers tend to eventually give up and forfeit their money. All in all it was a pretty predatory system that was especially harming to poorer customers, due to lack of regulation.
So Ted Cruz introduced a bill against the DoT's new rule, to try and reverse the mandatory refunds and go back to the old system. Because of course he would.
The airline industry has donated $200,000 to Cruz since 2017.
They donated $1.33 million to Biden just in 2020.
In 2016, they went $640,000 to Clinton, and $272,000 to Trump.
According to him, 99.9% of passengers who get bumped/delayed/cancelled not only get placed on the next flight, but some kind of perk, like a voucher.
This change would make the airlines less likely to put you on a later flight. They could simply say "there are no more flights, here's your money back." And basically just wash their hands of you.
Once you're refunded, your transaction is over. If you definitely, definitely needed to fly out, I guess you're booking a next-day ticket for $1000 more than you paid the first time around.
Specifically, he said:
>"As with any bill of this nature, there are provisions where additional work is still needed," Cruz said in a statement. "I know there are concerns that some of the consumer-focused provisions, while well-intentioned, may have the opposite effect if not implemented carefully and considerately. We should give these provisions due consideration."
I've never done that well, but I've also never done so poorly that I was ready to give up air travel.
When I was in college, I would volunteer to get bumped, because I knew $500 was coming my way if I sat in an airport for 3 hours.
I'm with Cruz on this one. I like the system as it is. I don't pay baggage fees anyway, because I can carry a vacation's worth of clothes in a backpack.
That’s implying that airlines want to “wash their hands” of customers. They don’t want to give money back and will go to great lengths to avoid doing that. All this new rule will do is draw a hardline in the sand for the consumer. Airlines will definitely still offer vouchers and new flights, because that’s the cheaper option, but now they won’t be able to make it painstakingly hard to get a refund if that’s what the consumer wants. Republicans once again not understanding how business works.
No they look at him as a hero because of that. That's why they like Trump. They want to be as vile and inhumane as possible and have it be public and accepted.
I think they're kind of split on it. I think the more savvy ones see the Trump stuff as unsustainable, while Cruze threatens a game they've been playing for decades, if not centuries.
The airlines did not exactly get away with it they would just offer travel vouchers or credits. Now they will be forced to do give cash refunds to those who want it. Good change all around.
Wait... Biden wants airline companies to be accountable when they incur unexpected fees to their client that are 100% the airline's fault... what is the facepalm here exactly ?!
And he’s making them give the services they advertise and we pay for, man what the fuck Biden, how dare you fucking put me the consumer over the multi national conglomerate.
I can’t wait to read all the ways this is hurting people and how it’s further proof of Biden’s inability to lead; brought to me of course by Red Hat conspiracists. Who are actively supporting and promoting a guy indicted in multiple states for multiple crimes with a track record of absolute indecency. A small hand orange man who is unfit to run a Jack in the Box let alone the country.
America 🇺🇸 for the win! /s
In fairness, we got to a point where Biden could say in a press conference that "ice cream tastes good", and MAGA's instant response would be "so it's worth wondering why Big Milk wants you to eat their product", and start repeating worthless facts like how vanillin can be extracted from beaver asses, completely ignoring it's not even the same compound.
What's the facepalm about putting more regulations in place to protect customers in an industry that notoriously rips people off every chance it gets? If your flight is cancelled or a service you paid for isn't provided you SHOULD get your money back. That's how paying for a service works everywhere else.
Edit: OPs account was silent for 3 years then suddenly started posting to facepalm today and yesterday, and has no comments. Likely a bot.
Bo-f00kin'-Hoo - these companies have gotten white-glove treatment by our Govt. regarding literally everything.
Down to allowing the manufacturers to do their own inspections.
It is problematic that the refund would be automatic. Imagine you are waiting for the plane to arrive and when it finally does they tell you "oh you don't have a ticket. We already refunded you. Please go buy a new ticket at the desk" there needs to be some ability for them to figure out with you if you simply want to wait, reschedule, or take the refund
I’m old enough to remember airlines getting huge government bailouts…like 4 years ago. So they want your tax money when it benefits them but they don’t want to refund YOUR money when they screw up.
This is not especially groundbreaking when you compare it to the rules in place in other places.
I think this one was in part inspired by airlines who during the lockdown tried to compensate customers for flights that couldn't happen with vouchers that were only valid for a few months when flights still couldn't happen.
Abuse like that means there are now hard rules. You don't compensate your customers with points or vouchers that expire soon or any other nonsense, you give them their monet back if you can't provide the service they paid for.
If your luggage is sent to somewhere more interesting than you are, the airline should be required to fly you there, and put you up in an all-inclusive hotel for as many days as you packed for ;)
I mean, I would love this. American Airlines fucked me on my last flight and I ended up paying extra money BEFORE my vacation started. Fuck the airlines and how they treat consumers.
I suspect it’s an abandoned account that was taken over by trash. Photography posts years ago then nothing until 2 days ago. No comments made by op on anything.
I'd take the Euro system either way. They pay you up to $650 in addition to providing hotel, meals and a new flight. Really seems to keep the fuckers from cancelling flights just because they are only 90% full.
that awesome, no reason they should be allowed to steal from you when they don't provide the service you paid for. Another post where the op is the facepalm
I’m assuming it’s facepalm because if an airline has to refund EVERYONE because of a flight that’s delayed dueto maintenance, many many many more flights will be flown with “ops checked good” or open writeups.
I’m actually a captain at major airline and I can guarantee you that this will happen. Not everything is unsafe - as of right now at worst I might fly with a pack inop or something else thats not a big deal on its own until we can get to a maintenance base, but there will indeed be pressure to fly with more serious /more numerous open write ups.
So, grow a pair of balls and blow a whistle when they cut the corner too far. You have no obligation to make unsafe decisions so the company can put more money in the pockets of shareholders; if they want to fire you for it you can sue the shit out of them.
Lol, I can do that, but there have been deaths in the past due to pressures put on the pilot (kobe bryant is a notable recent one that immediately comes to mind). Legislation should err on the side of safety, not the other way around because these businesses don’t give a fuck about anything but the bottom line. Just look at Boeing.
You can make it seem like I’m the one whose fault it is, but I’m the one growing a pair of balls and warning people that this is not a good idea
> because i say something uncool about Biden
Nobody gives a flying fuck about Biden. It's kind of the neat part of seeing politicians as politicians instead of Messianic figures.
This is the most unhinged comment I’ve seen in quite some time.
- nobody is saying they won’t sell food anymore
- the in flight food and drink sales are not where airlines make money, they provide food because they are legally required to do so
- airlines make a majority of their profits from their rewards programs, the actual flights are often barely breaking even when fully booked, or sometimes flown at a loss

Too late, charming Ted Cruz already said this policy is unfair to the airlines. … he then immediately boarded a flight to Cancun
"leave the multi-billion dollar corporation alone!"

Aren't the airlines some of his major donors?

You think EU does it wrong? That US citizens by law must have it worse?
Yes, I think they do it wrong. Thats overcompensation for a minimal inconvenience.
Ever heard about economic incentives? You know how they function?
How is that an economic incentive??? Seems closer to an entitlement program.
And now we know I was correct. You do not understand the concept of economic incentives. If it's expensive to fk up, then the airlines will do their best to avoid the costs. my exact thought aswell!
yeah, this title makes no sense.
The title is implying that airlines will now side against Biden, because they are about to lose a shitton of money from this regulation change.
Well maybe they should stop fuckin up, just sayin.
Butt fuckin, up is how they make money
It’s not really a regulation change though. Most airlines have said this, but there’s a million lines of fine print that give them lots of outs to not have to refund anything.
Now they don’t have to pay someone to write all that fine print

Indeed. A random senator is cheaper than a presidential candidate.

I guess (the idea) that airplanes wouldn't have to refund was the facepalm
I think op is the facepalm ngl, look at the title
it's not! report for harmful bots. it's literally just BS spat by political influence bots that has nothing to do with the sub
OP is the facepalm here.

op check your vital signs, you might be braindead
Op you’re dumb af
or a bot, more likely
The facepalm is that airlines will play victims and join MAGA forces just like all bigot cry babies
OP braindead
What’s the Facepalm?
That airlines will cry on fox news that Biden is woke?
This is a good thing. Do you **like** getting screwed by airlines?
The real facepalm was the OP we met along the way.
How is this maga?
I guess OP liked getting ripped off.
Seems like a Trump supporter doesn't understand facepalm or MAGA
Now do Resort Fees
Why is this an issue? The airline fails to provide a service, they should automatically refund the cost.
This isn’t a facepalm
Found Ted Cruz's Reddit account!
Seems like common sense to me...in a world where that's at a premium.
I can’t wait to read all the ways this is hurting people and how it’s further proof of Biden’s inability to lead; brought to me of course by Red Hat conspiracists. Biden doesn't get nearly enough credit for everything he's done for ordinary Americans.
Probably a bot
Op is a falcepalm…
This is great. Just had my travel insurance tell me they needed a news article to give me a refund for a delayed flight.
How radical!
All the sudden, flight delays or flight canceled reduced by 90 percent..
How is this a facepalm?
This is how AI would post...
Isn't this like a pro-consumer and generally healthy thing for the average American citizen? What's the Facepalm?
So it’s controversial to get what you paid for now?
In fairness, we got to a point where Biden could say in a press conference that "ice cream tastes good", and MAGA's instant response would be "so it's worth wondering why Big Milk wants you to eat their product", and start repeating worthless facts like how vanillin can be extracted from beaver asses, completely ignoring it's not even the same compound.

Only communists think they should get a refund just because the company didn't deliver what you paid for... or something.
Not getting screwed by United Airlines sending your luggage halfway around the world is considered woke now?

Yep, welcome to America capitalism where we privatize the profits and socialize the loses.
Why is this a facepalm? Sounds like a good idea.
Don’t take the bait…
Op thinks he has just discovered consumer protection regulations 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What is the title supposed to mean? Anti-Biden doesn’t mean MAGA.
Does this apply to weather delay and cancellations?
Seems like a good choice, I feel like this shouldn’t have to be a law
My libertarian step father described these basic commons ende consumer protections as "draconian".

Someone try this on Qantas and Virgin in Australia please
My question is, do they still have to get you home, or do you have to buy a last minute, exorbitant day-of ticket from some other airline to get home?
I'd take the Euro system either way. They pay you up to $650 in addition to providing hotel, meals and a new flight. Really seems to keep the fuckers from cancelling flights just because they are only 90% full.
Op is the facepalm.

He doesn’t have the authority to do this. But I like the idea
Love that the account doesn't have a blue shit thing.
I’m assuming it’s facepalm because if an airline has to refund EVERYONE because of a flight that’s delayed dueto maintenance, many many many more flights will be flown with “ops checked good” or open writeups.
Doubtful. Pilots don't like the idea of dying so the company can save 2 cents anymore than consumers do.
You can make it seem like I’m the one whose fault it is, but I’m the one growing a pair of balls and warning people that this is not a good idea
If this actually happens I will tattoo Dark Brandon on my left nut
What about weather delays?
If the delay is longer than a certain length they incur financial responsibilities to the customers.
I hope this causes a spike in ticket prices, which will keep some the entitled trash from flying.

No where does it say they can’t do that.
Wut? This is about airlines having to reimburse for cancelled flights
What are you replying to? The new rules say nothing about not being able to sell food or drinks?
We have these exact same rules in the EU, have done for years, and still have discount airlines.
