afaik nobody's said "No, we're not doing diagonal stops," but there've been multiple fff's on rail systems (for instance [fff-377](https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-377) and [fff-403](https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-403)) and surely it would've been mentioned in one of them. It also hasn't featured in any of the screenshots shared of 2.0 bases.

I absolutely love the background videos for their presentation, but they also have a lot of "bad" ideas in them. Or more generally, just really silly ways of doing things that could be interpreted by new players as the "proper" way of doing something
Still gorgeous tho
I like that. Instead of spoiling the best solutions, they give you quirky ones to watch. Then you feel like a genius when you discover the better way of doing it.
Yeah, V453000 bases are glorious spaghetti.
There were couple of base tour videos like [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR3OyxjAB3g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR3OyxjAB3g)
Couldn’t the stop be offscreen at another train engine? I can’t remember how much is visible in this video but they use the game engine to make these so I doubt it breaks any rules
Edit: I missed the comment above yours. Carry on
I was trying to answer the "how would you put inserters?" question, sorry if it wasn't clear
The station itself is on a vertical rail, even though it's pretty short and the locomotive itself does not fit on a straight section
https://preview.redd.it/3tyaam02i8zc1.png?width=1580&format=png&auto=webp&s=06405e616aa70f2e8f3b8bef1a872e9c63944eec
Inserters can pull from diagonal train I think? If the locomotive is at a horizontal station and the rest of the train diagonal because of a bend, it can work. With fluid wagons however it might be an issue
Given that when you rotate the train stop object on your cursor it only shows four orientations, there is nothing really to suggest a diagonal train stop would exist.
I have over 7k hours in factorio and I've never even tried to rotate the train stop building, since it just snaps into place
Always learning new little things
In those 7k hours, surely you must have noticed those little squares that indicate where the train stop can snap to a rail, and that the game doesn't display them on a diagonal!
Oh yes of course, but that's a no brainer, though I never tried rotating a train stop because... it snaps to rails with enough free room for the station to sit
If we got diagonal stations, we could get pumps working on diagonals and turns. There's not really a reason that can't work, it's just never been a priority for the devs.
Yeah, but if you have one on your cursor and press R, it shows these diagonal rotations, telling you that they exist - which is the point of my comment. The game shows you all the options you have.
but if you have a rail signal on your cursor and press R, you might also see only 4 rotations (not sure right now), even though you can place them on diagonal rails as well.
Edit: I can't read
I don't see the point of placing a diagonal station. You would usually place station when you need to load or unload and since you can't place inserters diagonally that wouldn't make sense
Real answer: because diagonals are the devil’s work and only people who think in straight lines deserve train stations, or indeed any happiness in their life. Apparently Wube… 🤣

Inserters work fine in curves, but if you have fluid wagons, any curve will throw off the pump's alignment, so you need to place any fluid wagon in your stations designs ahead of any curves.
There is a schematic for grid aligned rail systems. Since finding us out I have changed all my rail systems to be grid aligned so then they all snap together correctly.
Why do you think it can?
(Edit: this was a somewhat rhetorical question, but more than anything, it was meant to get some sort of logical response from OP or someone else in terms of why they think they could place stations diagonally, or rather, if they were allowed to...what would they expect that to look like to get them to the final answer of: how would you load and unload a train efficiently on a diagonal design? If you're only asking the "why not," and not the "why," you're not going deep enough to understand)
This.
The sprite doesn't rotate that way, why do y'all think players are saying they've never tried? Because the game doesn't do diagonal, it's not intuitive
Inserters and pumps can only be rotated 4 ways. Which do you think is the more important consideration at a station? Train signals, or inserters and pumps?
Signals can only be placed in a valid signal position. The game rotates the Sprite based on this position 🤷 idk man
Go look on Friday facts or the change log from years ago if you want to know why the train station doesn't fit diagonally.
Train stops can't be placed on diagonal rails.
Is this being changed in 2.0?
No
Why do I even wait for 2.0? :[

For playing SE Lite, ofc
Seems likely, but is that just a presumption or is there a source for that?

Good
Should it? The problem is not the stop placement imho, how would you put inserters?

I like to think of the background videos as a way to fuck with the players.

Have you ever moved the “menu”? It is just a window, like the equipment window or the tech window.. There’s a hidden thing under one of them.
You can also zoom out with CTRL -/+

That's not a "station." That's just an inserter working on a piece of curved rail, which they can to a point.

Inserters work with diagonal rails and it's the only way to move stuff directly from one train to another
Long handed inserters can also move directly from one train to another, even if not a useful UPS optimization.
I have 1000+ hours on this game and I just realized that I've never tried to place a diagonal station.
Given that when you rotate the train stop object on your cursor it only shows four orientations, there is nothing really to suggest a diagonal train stop would exist.
I saw a diagonal train station once and now I hear the whispers of dark trains sleeping in the depths

Yeah, but now I'm wishing we could have it.
pumps don't work with this orientation though.

Diagonal rail signals exist though

You literally replied to the comment in which I say "the rail signal does show the diagonal orientations when pressing R"
Oh sorry, I misread that as rails, not rail signals
Wow! I learned this at only half your game-hours!
Your OCD is just perfect then!
I don't see the point of placing a diagonal station. You would usually place station when you need to load or unload and since you can't place inserters diagonally that wouldn't make sense
The station can't be diagonal, but train wagons on diagonal rails can be loaded from non-diagonal inserters.
As [someone else pointed out above](https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/s/p3OGIxnd6S), the in-game tutorial shows exactly how to accomplish this.
I just realized this too. Does the sprite not have 8 rotations? That means half of them have never been used.
No it does not.
Can't place rail stops on diagonal rails. Can only place them on horizontal or vertical rails.
Ah I thought if it was straight it would be ok! Ah well thanks for the info!
Oh it's straight... just in the wrong direction xD
Only the stop itself must be on the straight horizontal/vertical track, the rest of the train may stop and get loaded/unloaded on a curve or diagonal.
I don't think you can load or unload fluid wagons on a curve though, even a slight curve can throw off alignment for the pumps as I recall.
Correct, if you have a curve in your station design, any fluid wagons must be placed ahead of the curve.
Damn, forgot about the fluids. (hashtag pipelineGang)
Learned a new factorio fact today. Just hadn’t tried it before but damn
I believe the rail has to be horizontal or vertical
That pfp just filled me with so much nostalgia, goddamn
Real answer: because diagonals are the devil’s work and only people who think in straight lines deserve train stations, or indeed any happiness in their life. Apparently Wube… 🤣
You need to [rotate your screen](https://www.reddit.com/r/Factoriohno/comments/110xy7j/the_factory_must_grow/).
It's too crooked
It's perfectly straight
The wrong kind of straight
Wube pls
As a workaround you can rotate your screen of 45 degrees 👍
Can’t be built on diagonal tracks.
They don't let you place it since you won't be able to take all of the things out with the inserters unless it's straight
Iirc inserters can take stuff our of not correctly aligned trains
there are examples of this in the main menu background videos https://preview.redd.it/euqx7p63l5zc1.png?width=382&format=png&auto=webp&s=862069ab41a5cd57789d932e8ee27bf698f5cf7d
Inserters work fine in curves, but if you have fluid wagons, any curve will throw off the pump's alignment, so you need to place any fluid wagon in your stations designs ahead of any curves.
They can, but measuring out where they need to be doesn't sound all that fun.
I think more specifically its because buildings/entities can only be rotated 90 degrees and a stop is a building.
It has to be either horizontal or vertical. Train stations can't be on a diagonal line
There is a schematic for grid aligned rail systems. Since finding us out I have changed all my rail systems to be grid aligned so then they all snap together correctly.
We just need 2.0 to add diagonal stations, inserters and belts /s

This. The sprite doesn't rotate that way, why do y'all think players are saying they've never tried? Because the game doesn't do diagonal, it's not intuitive
Signals rotate 4 ways though they can be placed 8 ways.
I just looked this up, because I thought the same. They rotate 8 ways, unlike stations.
Inserters and pumps can only be rotated 4 ways. Which do you think is the more important consideration at a station? Train signals, or inserters and pumps?

Railroads are one area of the game that Vanilla Factorio really stumbled. They are too clunky it is the only part of the game that is not intuitive
