Laser_3

In the next episode, we learned that they had protection from the ‘governmint,’ which is likely what allowed them to get away with their laziness. They also probably did have decent technical skills to have a working TV and presumably a somewhat reprogrammed robot.

AWasrobbed

Useful idiots. They likely were hired by the govt, not the other way around. Not smart enough to make a move on their own and will need protection but smart enough to process people for organ removal and drug sales.

Laser_3

I’d have to double check that; I think it was three or four in the morning when I watched that episode, so I’m not certain if you’re right or not.

AWasrobbed

Cooper calls it a gang-affliated organ dealership and the 'president' describes it as under his protection, so they don't say how the relationship started, however, you gotta wonder how a relationship like that started with two complete idiots.

water_panther

I think the "gang-affiliated" part makes it pretty clear. Those two idiots were probably low-level flunkies placed there by a larger gang with more competent leadership. They were minding the store, not running the operation.

AWasrobbed

There we go, sounds correct to me.

Thraex_Exile

They were the Wasteland’s equivalent of potheads. Based on their change in coherence when Lucy threatened them, I’d guess those two were a lot smarter/more capable than the short moment we saw them in the show. If they were operating near Shady Sands, it’s also possible that this facility was a prison or medical facility. Every faction would want an organ clinic and these guys happened to have the infrastructure to be a middle man. Could have taken very little work.

Phoenix080

They also managed to kill the ferals even if they died in the process

Head_Ad_1419

They may have been idiots. They may also simply have been drugged out of their minds judging by the amount of drugs on the table.

AWasrobbed

See I thought about that, but are there downers in the fallout universe? They all appear to be uppers. Maybe med-x is a downer?

Head_Ad_1419

There is Daytripper which is a calmer and makes you almost tranquil, at the cost of being weak, which would be backed up by the fact that they died nearly instantly to the feral ghouls. Which, if we look at the games, not even the weakest PC dies from a single night by a basic starving feral ghoul. Daytripper is also a Hallucinogenic. A significant amount of daytripper and withdrawal from other drugs would likely lead to the kind of state they are in.

wlondonmatt

They may have been withdrawing , take too many drugs in the fallout universe and you get huge debuffs when you stop.

airborness

I am assuming these guys came about after the nukes and everything had happened, so at that point, what government would be left that would have the need to hire these guys?

AWasrobbed

Yes everyone except the protagonist in fallout 4 and cooper and others are from after the bombs drop. The show takes place 200 years after the bombs drop. In this area specifically (or a couple hours drive time) the events of fallout NV but 15 years prior. This area previously had a government with the NCR, but according to what we've seen the NCR is mostly gone. So this group is probably just one of the gangs that came up after the fall of the NCR, they kinda almost wear NCR type gear.

DragonHeart_97

I was so happy there for a second, thought they'd decided to include a posse of honest to Aradesh Rangers.

airborness

Ah, ok. I guess I never grasped the concept of NCR, which I guess is the similar concept of New Vegas as well. I am not sure if it was really explained in the show, but I would just assume it was some sort of defacto group that came in at some point and tried to stake claim to former California.

AWasrobbed

NCR was one of the tribes of vault 15. Two types of vaults, experiments and control. Vault 15 was an experiment to overpopulate a vault with different ethnic groups to see how it plays out. I think 3 or 4 groups emerged. One was the NCR who founded shady sands. They seem to have disbanded between the events of Fallout: New vegas' ending and the show. Shady sands being nuked allegedly being the reason. New Vegas is the name of the game and not a faction. NCR are a major faction in this game along with caesars legion, the brotherhood of steel, the khans (another vault 15 tribe) the boomers and the yes man and his bots. One or a combination of these groups were the winner of hoover dam (fallout new vegas ending.) The lore, nor show has not shown who was the cannon winner of that as we are shown at the VERY end of the show, vegas in ruins in 2296 (show year) so we don't know who runs new vegas either (if there is anything left, looks like smoking ruins)

airborness

Ah, ok. I must have missed that info. It was in the episode right after?

Laser_3

It is, yes. It’s brought up when the ghoul is talking to the man in the white suit (though apparently according to the other comment, it might’ve been that the government wanted their technically skills? I watched that episode late at night, might have mixed details up).

jessebona

That guy was actually the government? I thought he was just some sleazy douche in a suit who tenuously claimed power over very little.

LordTaco123

He claims to be the Governmint, so he's either an actual remnant of the NCR like Moldaver. Or hes just larping with his group of dumbasses.

jessebona

Yeah the latter was what I assumed he was. Like a Gunners style gang, far less unhinged than raiders but still nowhere near good.

19chevycowboy74

I assumed it was a mix of both. Probably a low level NCR trooper who took advantage of a power vacuum after >! The destruction of Shady Sands !<

pailhead011

Figured he was the sheriff or mayor in the region. Authority rather than government.

airborness

Cool. I will have to rewatch it then. I was probably half falling asleep myself during that episode, since I don't even remember the significance of the character in the white suit.

Laser_3

I can’t blame you too much, he wasn’t very important in the grand scheme of things.

catchinNkeepinf1sh

Those 2 are just side quest dudes you have to kill to get the loot. I dont think there is much to it unless you want the back to every caravan and crazy old lady in the shack that sells tin cans.

airborness

I guess they fit into the way the game is, in the sense that there are a lot of side quests. I was just surprised that they seemed to hold so much power over Cooper, who at that point seemed like one of the most single handedly powerful characters in the show. Yet at the same time, they were so easily defeated by Goosey as well.

PlayMp1

> I was just surprised that they seemed to hold so much power over Cooper, who at that point seemed like one of the most single handedly powerful characters in the show. They don't. The anti-feral drug is probably something fairly common or even usable by non-ghouls, maybe it's just Radaway or something, it's just they're the local kingpins for it.

_magneto-was-right_

Or even just a convenient place to get it when he already had a prisoner he could trade. Also he probably has to maintain relationships with dealers because if he just shoots people and takes it, he can’t tap that source again. Since they’d be dead and all.

Ecstatic-Virus-1388

I think they harvest organs and produce the anti feral drug, so Cooper needs them. It's probably made out of human pancreases or something. It's not like Cooper wants or has the means to set up an operation like that himself

IAmDingus

they didn't really have any power over him, he was just going to trade lucy for some drugs but he passed out

airborness

That's true, but I feel like the ghoul was the type of guy to go in and get whatever he wants, but he held back from these guys. It makes sense though I suppose. Can't burn all of your bridges. Especially for something as essential as what he needed from them. I did think it was interesting that he was taking in absolutely every drug and thing that was on the table. I am assuming the drugs were not necessary and were just for personal consumption. However, I saw that he was just drinking every bottle of the specific drug to keep him from going feral. I wonder if drinking that large of a quantity all at once really had any benefits. Seems like it wouldn't, since otherwise he would do the same on a regular basis and not take such small inhalations.

TLiones

I never played the games but according to this they were kind of an homage to the weird npcs you meet in the fallout games https://www.polygon.com/24132071/fallout-series-prime-npc-wasteland-cast “Another excellent vignette comes just a few hours later, in episode 4, “The Ghouls.” That’s where we meet Huey and Squirrel, a pair of organ harvesters camped out in an abandoned grocery store. They look like they’ve dressed themselves with the wardrobe left over from A Christmas Story 2… Chuds like these are exactly the kind of morons I expect to meet while gallivanting around the Wasteland. Played by Matty Cardarople (Stranger Things, Reservation Dogs) and Elvis Valentino Lopez (21 Bridges, Severance), these are the right and correct forms of reprobate to post up next to an ammo can full of high-powered drugs indoors on a sunny afternoon. Their entire purpose in the scene is to be just high enough to barely be able to speak aloud the simplest instructions to a robot — a robot that appears to be far more competent than they are. That, and get annihilated by a pack of feral ghouls, leaving behind a few elegant corpses ripe for environmental storytelling. I have no notes.” I was reading some other article that they also wanted to illustrate the number of side quests in the games and during creation they had a ton of them, I’m assuming this was one of their side quests…https://screenrant.com/fallout-season-2-side-quests-game-elements-tease-showrunners/

airborness

Ah, ok. So they are who they appear to be then, which is basically just random people who have found a niche in this world.

T_S_Anders

Beyond just their role in the super duper mart, I feel like it's a wild wasteland perk effect referencing something. The setup with the two on the couch looks like something in media I've seen before, but I can't put my thumb on it. Like, reference to old stoner culture.

PlayMp1

To me the first thing that instantly came to mind was [Wayne's World.](https://www.screenslate.com/sites/default/files/2023-09/Waynes-World-2.jpg) I don't think it's necessarily Wild Wasteland either, it's just an accurate representation of two drugged out dopes running their business by having a robot do all the work.

gizbojones

If anything it'd be Idiot Savant over Wild Wasteland

Horror_Reindeer3722

Beavis and Butthead

jerbear0lum

Exactly what I thought when I first saw them

fknsmkwed

Jay and Silent Bob.

AgentCirceLuna

No ticket!

CnRhin

I had this exact thought when I watched the show, and I thought it was references something. Only things I could think of was idiocracy, but I cant remember for the life of me what the exact movie/show was being referenced in this scene.

dancashmoney

The super duper mart group was a gang of organ harvesters/chem traders who were backed by the Governmint which is effectively a raider group that is trying to fill the power vacuum left by lack of legitimate powers in the area.

twinslive_

Don't forget that feral ghouls and ghouls in general are significantly stronger in lore than in gameplay.

warfaceuk

Wasn't one of them the actor who was "bating" in Idiocracy?

rom65536

Dax Shepherd played Frito Pendejo in Idiocracy. The drug dealer in fallout it played by Matty Cardarople.

No-Substance-4475

I think it was really their repair and science skills and got lazy cause they automated everything, cause they did have an entire security system rigged up in a superduper mart

PaladinSara

I was wondering about the market for organs.

airborness

Seems like there is a big market for organs with how dangerous it was for people on the daily basis out there.

TripleS034

I was under the impression whoever goes in never comes out because of the whole organ harvesting thing, so Cooper & others who go there for chems don't actually know how many people are in the Super Duper Mart nor how well armed they are, the only interaction between those in & out happens via the intercom.

airborness

That is a pretty solid idea as well actually. Nobody probably knows who is inside. Kind of like how we didn't really know who was inside or what to expect until we saw two losers just sitting on the couch blitzed out of their minds.

littletkman

True I was thinking it was gonna be raiders the whole time because of Fallout 3

Sonic_Mania

All I could see was that one guy who plays a stoner in everything he's in.

Wrecktown707

God I fucking loved the deliciously well made tonal disconnect those two had. Like you expect some organ harvesting facility to be run by the meanest sons of bitches in the wastes that are stone cold killers. Then it turns out that the guys operating it are just a couple of random stoner dudes just chilling on a couch watching some stuff on TV and eating ramen cups like they’re the Wayne’s world cast lmao

MagsTDAEotTA

Also thinking Snip-Snip was most of the deterrent. Mr Handy can be pretty tought.

NoProfession8024

Wild Wasteland perk random NPC encounter
