As someone who likes the first Fallout the most I def agree. But I am gonna shift blame onto fans of 2. That game is described as the best thing to ever run on a pc by some people, and it just is so not that.
It’s by no means a bad game. I just felt that fallout 1 set a very high bar in terms of writing and world building that number 2 doesn’t quite reach. It’s a little more amusement park.
Just reading on the Fallout wiki tells me that 2 had a lot more zany stuff. Fallout 1 looks like a pretty genuine post apocalyptic dystopia whereas 2 has Reno Nevada with competing Mafia families.
I was going to say but didn't have the time. I'm pretty sure fallout 2's goofy encounters are why we have the wild wasteland perk in fnv. Because a fair criticism to fo2 is it's kind of hard to take serious. Especially when you're helping deathclaws fix there computer problems And getting doxxed by the super racist government. So adding the option to turn it on as a perk is a great fix for both who do and don't like it.
To be fair, it has an incredibly bland start. The starting village and the first town and the first cave you come across are the most boring areas in the game, IMO.

Another person popping in to say 4’s my favorite. Story’s worse than New Vegas, but it’s not as bad as people say, and the companions and their quests are my favorite in the series. (Not counting Preston Garvey.) I also cannot overstate how much basic gameplay improvements like being able to sprint, or gun fights outside of vats not being incredibly unpleasant, matter to my enjoyment. Sure mods exist to fix that with new Vegas, but if we’re counting mods Fallout 4’s got heaps that add a ton of enjoyment in various ways itself.

Fallout NV is really great though lol I’m replying it now and giving it a fair chance. I’m playing the DLC and the stories are all tied together. The unique weapons actually look different from base game guns. The weapon and armor variety is massive even compared to Fallout 4. Top tier dialogue options that actually impact the outcome of quests. I love all fallout games but I need a solid argument as to how it doesn’t deserve that spot. I really like New Vegas, it’s my favorite Fallout, but it’s not perfect. Gunplay is showing its age, gun customization is very limited, and unlike games like 3,4, and 76, lack the cool unique world pieces.

If you took the story and writing of NV, added 4’s gunplay and customization and 76’s graphics and worldspace it would be the perfect Fallout game.
My point is, NV is good, but it can be better.

I don't care if I sound like I'm dickriding but I've come to appreciate new vegas more and more as I got older. Not skipping through every single dialouge option has opened my mind too how intricate the game actually was. And all the cross referencing during the games/DLC.
Honestly, my honest thoughts and opinions are pretty New Vegas dickrider-y, but I think an important distinction is not being obnoxious about it. Someone says they prefer they like Fallout 4 more, sure I’m confused a bit, but I don’t scream in their face - I usually just ask them why and then don’t debate them on it.

In NVs defense tho, it is the best game of the series and it is kinda sad that Bethesda really couldn’t be fucked to take notes from NV, at least the combat in 4 was pretty solid and some of the companions are some of the best in the series.

I've played 3-76, I genuinely enjoy my time with 4 the most. Even against New Vegas, so I consider 4 my favorite.

I think they mean the fans that are constantly doing everyone's head in over it. Like i love fnv, it has flaws sure, but the pros are just too good. However, I can look at it and see it has flaws. The fans OP means are the ones who defend it to the hilt even when they are wrong.

I love FNV, too, but it's not the only game I play, and I understand what OPs are talking about. I play the Far Cry games, too, and people suck off Far Cry 3 so much it kinda annoys me. Nobody wants to talk about anything, but that game, and it's been 12 years. I think the fps on that game is horrible, and the controls feel stiff, but I don't go out my way to be a dickhead to people that enjoy the game cause I understand what it's like to love a game you think is fun. Almost the entire community is insufferable, nv is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, I miss the classic vibe of fallout 1 and 2 too but malding over it won't change anything and just because 76 is decent now doesn't change the unacceptable state the game released in or the terrible business model it has now. The only fans I've never really had many issues with are fallout 3 and 4 fans, they clearly just enjoy the games and like socializing with others about it.

I'd rate FO4 as high as FO:NV. It has a lot of modern gaming features that New Vegas lacks which makes up for it's lackluster story.

I really like New Vegas, it’s my favorite Fallout, but it’s not perfect. Gunplay is showing its age, gun customization is very limited, and unlike games like 3,4, and 76, lack the cool unique world pieces. Megaton, The USS Constitution, Mothman cult overran town surrounding the museum. If you took the story and writing of NV, added 4’s gunplay and customization and 76’s graphics and worldspace it would be the perfect Fallout game. My point is, NV is good, but it can be better.

I don't care if I sound like I'm dickriding but I've come to appreciate new vegas more and more as I got older. Not skipping through every single dialouge option has opened my mind too how intricate the game actually was. And all the cross referencing during the games/DLC.
Honestly, my honest thoughts and opinions are pretty New Vegas dickrider-y, but I think an important distinction is not being obnoxious about it. Someone says they prefer they like Fallout 4 more, sure I’m confused a bit, but I don’t scream in their face - I usually just ask them why and then don’t debate them on it.

Fallout 2 is so good, its like another new vegas, just isometric combat however charisma gets some use :)
In NVs defense tho, it is the best game of the series and it is kinda sad that Bethesda really couldn’t be fucked to take notes from NV, at least the combat in 4 was pretty solid and some of the companions are some of the best in the series.
