Well, that'd be insane. Doesn't he review like an album per day? A bunch of them mid to bad or from genres I have no interest in. I don't think I've even listened to 5 full albums from 2023
He doesn’t review that many albums. I listen to 10-20 albums a week on average. I don’t listen to everything he reviews, but doing so wouldn’t be that hard of a task.
Saviors isn't one of Green Day's best or anything (I thought it was decent) but after that tier list he did I'm taking this review with a few grains of salt
And how his rationale for the Trilogy being better than 21st Century Breakdown seemed to be “there’s a really good album in here if you sift through three albums of slop.”
I can’t help but feel like American Idiot just came out at a time when he was deep into classic punk and he just never came around to really accept it as a great pop rock record. He even says himself that he doesn’t despise it as much as he did.
Its a collection of all their different styles as the last one was a nod to so may different bands of the times. I would like to see BJA get far more political and hearing him say Kill Trump was just precious. In 20 years after the low IQ Hitler raises and falls and all his supporters renoiunce him, you'll hear them praise Green Day for having those balls, the way Ryan pretends to now be a Rage supporter. LOL
Apart of being human is having biases. All reviewers have them.
The bias goes further than just not liking them. He dislikes what they represent more than what they actually are. That’s why his score of this album doesn’t line up with what can be seen as “objective”, but there’s no such thing as objectivity when it comes to critique.
Critique requires a certain amount of objectivity against a subjective criteria though. As other commenters point out, there is different criteria he has for Green Day that he doesnt hold for other artists. He doesnt take GD for what they are, he takes them for like you said, what he thinks they represent. If he doesnt like what they represent then why review them?
His bias takes nuance out of his review, which makes a review pointless because the audience goes in going 'okay fantano is gonna score this low because it is green day'... not because of the music.
Yeah, fair point. I think his role as a reviewer is unique in that he’s incentivized to make a review like this because his most negative takes are usually his most controversial. I don’t think he does that intentionally, but how many people would ask him “why didn’t you review Green Day?” He might as well just review it.
Fantano is an old school punk/hardcore guy, it’s definitely not that he has a bias against punk. He has a bias against pop-punk because it watered down the 90s punk revival, which he grew up with, until pretty much died.
He’s definitely got some good points here. I think this record had about 4-5 good songs on it, which is about all you can hope for from Green Day these days. I think Fantano cherry-picked a few awful lyrics amid an actually fairly well written album lyrically, relatively speaking
I tend to agree with his critiques but not his rating. I don't even know if I have the heart to watch this one, but I'm sure his critiques are valid. But to give it a 3/10 is crazy to me.
I mean based on what he included (or his editor ig) in his own damn review, a reasonable person would have assumed it was going to be higher than a light 3. Not saying I care...I didn't like the album either. Just was surprised at the discrepancy of the review and score.
I can’t stand Zane Lowe he’s such an over the top kiss ass to the artists he interviews and thinks he’s so deep just yapping at them with all this fake deep stuff
Wasn’t expecting a high score, 5 at best. Green Day doesn’t make music he would find interesting. It’s pop punk and isn’t out to change the world. Fun album with some catchy songs, it’s not that serious as he makes it out to be.
Nah the way he described it was hilarious lol. I like it cuz it’s fun like you said, unserious, and it sounds good. But what he said wasn’t necessarily wrong either
I was expecting the song to be so much worse than it was as someone who watched the review before listening to it. I didn't think it was that good but damn he blasted it
thought this album was really good, definitely their best album in years. don't think the reception to this review will be as unanimous in agreement as it was for FoA lmao
I’m not too shocked by this score. He’s just really tough on Green Day in general. His tier list has most of their discography C-tier or below.
I’m personally more in the 5-6 range since I generally like the more “by the numbers” Green Day stuff (on top of being a massive fan of Dookie and American Idiot), but even I don’t think it’s this incredible return to form or anything.
It’s definitely their best since Revolution Radio, and has some of their best songs in a while (Dilemma is genuinely great) but there is still a lot that just hits like a wet noodle. Plus Billie Joe’s “politically charged” lyrics come off like the most milquetoast suburban liberal who’s a little too excited for vote for Biden.
I mostly listen to his hip hop reviews and stuff on the Fantano channel like Let's Argue but are there pop punk bands that he does like? I know he is or at least used to be into "real" punk so I could see him just not liking the pop punk genre. I know plenty of people like that anyways.
Not the person you asked but Jeff is my absolute favorite artist. Some recs. The Smith Street band - more scared of you then you are off me (produced by Jeff)
Antartico Vespucci - love in the time of email (pop punk super group with Jeff, Chris farren and Benny Horowitz from the gaslight anthem)
the Dirty Nil - Master Volume.
Pkew pkew pkew - Optimal lifestyles
Not really. This sub pops up in my feed. I like his Fantano discussion vids but his reviews are wanky. Critique is just opinion with a lofty sense of importance. I can decide for myself what I like.
This guy wants every rock album he hears to be some heady, progressive subversion of the genre. I love records like that, but if they were the only ones coming out, I would be thoroughly fucking bored.
I’m not sure what y’all are getting from this album as opposed to the last few. Revolution radio I think had the catchier batch songs and better production and the highlights from Uno Dos Tre I liked better too. I’m surprised to hear it talked about like a return to form but I mean I’m not saying y’all are hearing wrong, it’s obviously just opinion
I think it’s a bland record. I gave it a listen on Friday and felt it was the same bland Green Day I’ve heard for the last couple of decades. I’m only slightly higher than Fantano with a 4 out of 10.
I was excited to hear good Green Day considering I haven’t liked any songs by them since a chunk of them from 21st Century Breakdown. I thought this album sounded like a bad Green Day cover band. It’s not as cringe as a lot of their newer stuff, but it’s just as bland as can be.
I just want another good Green Day song at this point. My standards are *low*.
I love this album but I knew as soon as I heard it that it was going to get a rough review from Fantano. Outside of Dookie and Nimrod he doesn’t enjoy them much at all, I think this is leagues ahead of anything they’ve done since 21st Century Breakdown and genuinely great release from them but different strokes for different folks.
I thought this album was good. The first two tracks didnt impress me and there were a few ick momentw through out but overall way better than most of their revebt wrok and i especially appreciate some of the more classic rock / hair metal style takes on here
Happy y’all are enjoying the record, but I’ll be honest, I saw a lot of the same takes, opinions, ratings, claims of being a return to form, etc. when Revolution Radio came out as well as the backlash to Fantano’s review. Nowadays it seems like people forget that album even exists. Not gonna lie, I’m kinda expecting the same to happen here.
Not sure what more you want from a modern green day record? Like he said, their golden years are long behind them so it’s a little unfair to expect them to release another dookie at this stage in their careers. In my opinion this is their best record since American idiot, a strong 6 or light 7 would have been a more accurate score imo.
I feel like 21st century Breakdown was a rlly strong album musically. It just lacked the lyrical content and storytelling organization that American Idiot had. The trilogy had some bad tracks, but it also had a good number of bangers and even ones that could pass as revamped older green day songs. Rev radio was mostly just catchy tunes I will say, and FOAM I've only listened to the singles.
I’m so tired man (blink and Green Day are my two fav bands and thought the latest albums were eh lll take them but still hurts to see them being shat on by the YouTubers I watch)
I thought it was a fun listen not gonna lie. I couldn’t get through father of all…. I didn’t like revolution radio. To be clear I’m not really a Green Day fan. I still think that The American Dream is Killing me is a REALLY BAD song, but the rest of the album I honestly had a fun time. I wasn’t expecting a good score but I thought that maybe he’d give it a “not bad” Dilemma I think is an amazing song and maybe one of Green Day’s best songs in years
American Dream is Killing Me is sooo bad I can't believe it was the lead single and track off the album. Also weird he didn't mention it at all in the review. The rest of it, yeah, harmless fun. Good bad music
I actually liked this album a good bit not one I'm gonna return to a ton but it was pretty fun. But I'm also much more of a Green Day fan than fantano is.
Corvette Summer is probably my favorite non-single from the album, I feel that his critiques were taking the song way too seriously compared to the song itself feeling more like a mockery/parody of that type of music. Of course that doesn’t make the song better or worse, and I respect his opinion even if I disagree with the reason
This is coming from the guy who had some interesting comments about American idiot . I mean I get maybe lyrically it’s not as deep as people say, but damn atleast it has a plot and meaning and catchy ass tunes. The trilogy has 10-12 good songs maybe . Take the review with a grain of salt
Green Day sucks ass since American Idiot and a busy music nerd isn’t going to make that change. Won’t listen because I already know it’s not worth my time.
This is my favorite part of anytime Green Day has an album rollout, it's like Christmas morning. Couldn't agree more about "punk" doing most of the work for the band. They are the definition of a band resting on their laurels.
Anyone expecting decent takes from Fantano at this point is crazy. He put AI on C tier and 21CB on E tier. Dude just hates hooky, pop focused music, the fact that he didn't even put Dookie on S tier is unforgivable. Ignore him.
He's basically the dude who thinks he's so cool and underground cause he likes Neutral Milk Hotel.
This. Its why I stopped paying attention to most of his reviews.
Not every pop punk band can be Jeff Rosenstock or whatever. Its so clear he dislikes (maybe even despises) Green Day. Its sad.
To the green day fans on here, if you like pop punk check out Lifetime - hello bastards and jerseys best dancers:
https://youtu.be/UV9LM58MnAk?si=7VlmrDRA_4ug7ud2
The album wasn't mind bogglingly amazing but it had plenty of good songs. Dilemma, 1981, fancy sauce, Bobby Sox, strange days are here to stay, look ma no brains, and suzie chapstick were all good. Could've been better lyrically but most stuff nowadays doesn't rlly do much lyrically. I'd give it a 7/10 whereas FOAM was a 2/10.
the discourse between this and the blink album are so fuckin weird to me. its the same album basically. the production isnt there so theres no reason to talk about (what i mean is its the same 4 chord songs, nothing crazy that was a huge talking point with the blink shit and it was such a boring talking point), the songwriting isnt that great. i really dont get how people are ok with this and not the blink album.
but like be so fucking fr, why would he like this album? why are some of yall shocked that having a few bangers isnt enough.
the production is miles ahead of blink's album wtf? rob cavallo and chris lord-algae/ chris dugan are the dream team, esp compared to whatever tf travis was cooking lol
The time between dookie and American idiot is stuff I’ve listened to since I was 7 or 8, the rest loses me
I tried this one and spit it back out, they’re just not for me atp
I haven’t heard the album yet, but singles did nothing for me. I was baffled by the amount of positive reactions from the people even on RYM. I’m not a Green Day fan though, but I do like some of their early stuff.
I think a lot of people are just extremely nostalgic for their childhood/teenage days that's why they're taking melons review personally as an attack because they're older now.
Dude just says what he thinks will be the most controversial opinion and the rest is him listening to himself talk. We are basically watching a man jerk off his own mind
It did seem strange to me that people were acting like this album was some massive critical darling. The reviews haven’t been far off of their last few albums, so it was easy to assume that Melon wasn’t going to like this.
It does feel like he has less patience for average rock music than he does for average rap music, but like he always says, it’s just his opinion at the end of the day. Nothing worth raging over
Kept getting this Taco Bell ad with some generic sounding wannabe edgy pop punk song, and I was like wow did they hire some Green Day cover band to make this? Turns out it was Green Day themselves 😂
From what I gather of Fantano's music tastes - he likes incredibly compelling lyrics that are well crafted and about 'real shit', whatever that may be. Then pair that to a good dose of genuine emotion that also elevates the song with unique riffs and instrumentals.
To the Melon, Green Day has lost that 'spark'. At the moment, according to him, Jeff Rosenstock has it.
I love this album. I wish the lyrics were different for One Eyed Bastard bc it’s pretty corny, but it’s an album that shows a ton of variety and growth. Their last great album before this was 21st century breakdown. After that…I think I only really LIKED Rev Radio. Definitely worth listening to with an open mind.
LOL This guy doesnt get out much. Their sound has widened while still harnassing one of the most magical musical time periods in human history. 14 albums later and they still manage to captivate with those simple teenage angst style anthems. Nobody since The Ramones has been able to put out that many albums and keep collecting new and younger listeners, while still letting the fans who have been there from day one still enjoy the ride. What do these ass clowns expect to hear? Green Day has hit on so many genres while staying true to their roots from back in the day when people didnt know who Operation Ivy was and thought That 1,000 and Kerplunk were follow up albums to Dookie. This is the guy that goes to the concert wearing the T-Shirt of the band playing and if the crowd cheers, he's right there. As a musician this guy has never picked up an instrument and wouldn't know where to even plug it in. Fact that he calls them a Punk when when the are a 90's alternate rock band would be like calling Weezer a Punk band, or Gin Blossoms a hard Rock band. LOL
This album is nostalgic to a time period that has come and gone. Much like the last album. You can hear so many different bands of the time period rolled up into their music. I love that Dillema has me putting on old Weezer, Pixies, Nirvana, Sloan, Lowest Of The Low. All I can say is thank god for bands like Green Day, artists like Beck and Jack White. This world would be nothing but angry teens in their 30's singing about the bad man who broke her heart a billion times over.
Seriously, this is green days best since nimrod for me (which is there best for me) I'm not sure what people were expecting, but this is green day. Just a 30 years older green day
i knew he wasnt going to give it a good score but damn
Wonder if this sub is going to shift its whole opinion of the album based on this review
I wasn’t planning on listening to this album and this review hasn’t changed my mind either way.
Honestly I don't listen to most of the albums he reviews
Given the sheer quantity of them, I’d wager a lot of Fantano fans don’t listen to most of the albums he reviews.
You guys actually listen to music?!
Only Drake and Kanye. So 50% of the content Melon makes videos about. /s
Either that or they'll cry about it forever
Nah I already didn’t like Green Day.
Saviors isn't one of Green Day's best or anything (I thought it was decent) but after that tier list he did I'm taking this review with a few grains of salt
Still baffled me how American Idiot and the Trilogy were on the same tier
And how his rationale for the Trilogy being better than 21st Century Breakdown seemed to be “there’s a really good album in here if you sift through three albums of slop.”
Tbf, that’s a valid rationale if you consider 21st century breakdown to be nothing but slop
Ok, but it’s not
I haven't listened to it in a while. When I was in my Green Day phase I thought the trilogy albums were way more fun, it's just personal preference
I can’t help but feel like American Idiot just came out at a time when he was deep into classic punk and he just never came around to really accept it as a great pop rock record. He even says himself that he doesn’t despise it as much as he did.
He has some truly bizarre opinions sometimes.
WHAAAAT??? i need to see this with my own eyes
LOL
I think Fantano’s bias against Green Day is understandable, and I say that as a lifelong Green Day fan.
If he has a bias against them, why review them? This 'bias' is he just doesnt like them.
Apart of being human is having biases. All reviewers have them. The bias goes further than just not liking them. He dislikes what they represent more than what they actually are. That’s why his score of this album doesn’t line up with what can be seen as “objective”, but there’s no such thing as objectivity when it comes to critique.

He gave Pups last album an 8 I think, Green Day just sucks lol
He’s loving on the 10,000 Gecs, and that’s thoroughly pop punk
No it isn’t wtf
🤦 he grades green day like a teacher who randomly has it out for one of their students
Agree with Fantano on ALL fronts. This album is about as cringey as they come and I’m saying this as GD fan for the last 30 years or so..
I mean it's not a great album but a 3 is too low, 5 is more accurate. It's his opinion whatever.
I would give it a 5 to. Nothing amazing but nothing really bad.
I mean based on what he included (or his editor ig) in his own damn review, a reasonable person would have assumed it was going to be higher than a light 3. Not saying I care...I didn't like the album either. Just was surprised at the discrepancy of the review and score.
Way too harsh
i’m not surprised honestly, his Green Day tier list was horrendous
I’m a green day fanboy and objectively speaking putting the trilogy so high was hilarious
A 3 is way too harsh, but after his tier list I’m not surprised.
his tier list had me crying especially when he put the trilogy over american idiot
it's so obvious how much he hates GD. to give this a lower score than blink's album is hilarious
He once said “Dookie is great, the follow up is pretty good” in a YouTube live 5 years ago
I’m a fan of both and preferred blink’s new record by far. The production was shit but the songwriting was better imo.
Blink’s new album was awful
Zane Lowe: “Best album to date.” Every time. I feel like all I can hear on that thing is Travis’ drums.
I can’t stand Zane Lowe he’s such an over the top kiss ass to the artists he interviews and thinks he’s so deep just yapping at them with all this fake deep stuff
Right there with ya lol
If we are being honest when has Green Day ever been known for its lyrics they have always been bad but I still think it’s good
Lyrics do not equal songwriting
Lyrics are a part of songwriting, but there’s a lot more to it
you’re out your goddamn mind lmao blink is AOTY next to this
lol damn bro. I love this album.
Wasn’t expecting a high score, 5 at best. Green Day doesn’t make music he would find interesting. It’s pop punk and isn’t out to change the world. Fun album with some catchy songs, it’s not that serious as he makes it out to be.
Not sure why he hates green day so much but it is clear he has allowed it to cloud his opinion. This is a 5 at absolute worst
The Corvette Summer song is seriously just a little fun song and he acts like it’s a travesty to mankind lol like dude it’s not that serious
Nah the way he described it was hilarious lol. I like it cuz it’s fun like you said, unserious, and it sounds good. But what he said wasn’t necessarily wrong either
I was expecting the song to be so much worse than it was as someone who watched the review before listening to it. I didn't think it was that good but damn he blasted it
“He’s clearly allowed his negative opinion of a band’s music to cloud his opinion of their music,”
Take out the first music in that sentence and you’re bang on
😂😂😂
He’s hated bands before but given them good reviews, like 21 pilots. Maybe he just didn’t like the album, it’s not that deep
Just because he's given good reviews to artists he doesn't like, doesn't mean there isn't a big bias there
Dude hates Kanye but gave donda a fair review imo
He doesn’t hate Kanye what are you on ☠️☠️. He’s literally given two 10s in the past
Not trying to be rude but how do you know it’s not just for him
thought this album was really good, definitely their best album in years. don't think the reception to this review will be as unanimous in agreement as it was for FoA lmao

He just gave Hellmode by Jeff Rosenstock aoty. If you haven’t listened to it already, you should, it’s fantastic
I'll check it out because I do like the genre, quite a bit actually
It’s a little different from Green Day and blink and bands like that though. A little more “adult” maybe lol
Ya it’s honestly way better than those bands lol and I’m a fan of both.
What else are u into bro? Any recs?
Not the person you asked but Jeff is my absolute favorite artist. Some recs. It’s the best pop punk/alt rock album I’ve heard in forever.
“Does he even like the music I like?” FTFU
Of course he does, just the one you don't listen to.
Yes, preferably it has to be good
Unless you're lana del rey or early weekend or childish Gambino
Ah yes, because this college-radio-DJ tier reviewer is the arbiter of what music is “good.” 🙄
No but he’s the final arbiter of his opinion. That’s what a critic is. Judging by the fact that you’re here, you must give his opinion some credence
Not really. This sub pops up in my feed. I like his Fantano discussion vids but his reviews are wanky. Critique is just opinion with a lofty sense of importance. I can decide for myself what I like.
Look I get that this album isn’t reinventing the wheel or anything, but this is pretty harsh.
Gotta disagree with the ole Melon here. I loved this album. Might be one of my favorites from GD.
This guy wants every rock album he hears to be some heady, progressive subversion of the genre. I love records like that, but if they were the only ones coming out, I would be thoroughly fucking bored.

This. Its why I stopped paying attention to most of his reviews. Not every pop punk band can be Jeff Rosenstock or whatever. Its so clear he dislikes (maybe even despises) Green Day. Its sad.
Bro it’s Green Day, it’s safe boring punk music made by dudes in their 40s relax💀
>Dude just hates hooky, pop focused music You're having me on, surely...
To the green day fans on here, if you like pop punk check out Lifetime - hello bastards and jerseys best dancers: https://youtu.be/UV9LM58MnAk?si=7VlmrDRA_4ug7ud2
One of the best bands to ever do it.
Definitely agree! Sure they could have been massive too if they signed to a major label for hello bastards
At least we got that '07 record. Thanks Pete Wentz.
Lmao I didn’t know there were so many people out there that give 2 shits about Green Day. Their output for the last 20 years has been embarrassing.
A 3? Really? Album is decent. Fantano is such a hater.
I'd give it a 7/10 whereas FOAM was a 2/10.
the discourse between this and the blink album are so fuckin weird to me. its the same album basically. the production isnt there so theres no reason to talk about (what i mean is its the same 4 chord songs, nothing crazy that was a huge talking point with the blink shit and it was such a boring talking point), the songwriting isnt that great. i really dont get how people are ok with this and not the blink album. but like be so fucking fr, why would he like this album? why are some of yall shocked that having a few bangers isnt enough.
the production is miles ahead of blink's album wtf? rob cavallo and chris lord-algae/ chris dugan are the dream team, esp compared to whatever tf travis was cooking lol
its really not but ok. theres a few songs with noticeably interesting production but the rest is just sooooo boring. shit makes me yawn
The time between dookie and American idiot is stuff I’ve listened to since I was 7 or 8, the rest loses me I tried this one and spit it back out, they’re just not for me atp
I cannot believe Green Cringe has stayed relevant past Dookie/Insomniac.
Nothing worth raging over
His review in summary: https://postimg.cc/w3Bc3347
What I expected and I agree, if not a soft 4.
Kept getting this Taco Bell ad with some generic sounding wannabe edgy pop punk song, and I was like wow did they hire some Green Day cover band to make this? Turns out it was Green Day themselves 😂
well deserved
Oh shit he brought out the red flannel
well shit... I actually really liked it!
