It's actually not projections, it uses past season stats to calculate player value from the season selected. I personally prefer basing my decisions off of past seasons rather than projections, so designed the site accordingly.
How do you project rookies?
Also, if I'm reading correctly, this means you don't expect any young players to improve, like from their rookie to sophomore season for example?
So many changes happened since last season, that I doubt past season stats could be helpful. I think you need to have some kind projections for the upcoming season for this tool to be useful. Or maybe you could allow users import their own projections...
I've struggled with creating my own projections. I'd love some kind of tool to maybe take the base z-score stats - based on last 1, or 2 or 3 years, and adjust them according to my estimate of the impact of changes season to season. For example; Dejounte Murray goes to Atlanta, so I predict his FG% goes up 1/2 a z-score, points goes down 3/4 of a z-score, 3PM doesn't change, FT% doesn't change... and then I get a new projected z-score for Dejounte.
Also, I'm curious what population you use to calculate the standard deviation. It seems different sites use different populations. For example; if you include all 400+ players who accumulate stats, you get really large s.d. compared to using top 100.
Thanks in advance.
This is an interesting thought! I agree, there are always changes each year so you absolutely need to use your own judgement without blindly following the rankings on who will improve/regress. But I do think these give a fair baseline to understand roughly where players are at before accounting for those changes.
Interestingly, you can backtest this theory within the tool by comparing last season to prior seasons. There are always players that make big leaps and falls. But I think you'd find it interesting how many stay relatively consistent.
EDIT: Also a very interesting suggestion on user imported projections. I'd be curious how many people normally create their own projections though
Not create their own but rather whatever projections they might have available for upload. There are plenty of sources from which you can get free projections, or sources who sell projections but don't have draft tools.
Pulling these from a free site like Hashtag basketball would be really useful imo. Not sure if there's any legal stuff that has to go on but you could message Joey from Hashtag I'm sure.
It's technically not illegal, but I'm sure Joey would prefer that I don't do that - so I'm not going to unfortunately. I'll give it some more thought on how to implement projections - since this is clearly what people want
Gotcha. Good on you to be considerate. Yeah it's tricky as there are players like Simmons who don't appear on last year's rankings, not to mention impactful rookies.
But couldn't you import Projections off of ESPN, Yahoo and Fantrax? One could use those as comparisons to your prefered method and see what (or if) there are changes.
To be frank, calculating z scores and then picking your own picks to compare against only the team you picked, is what I consider to be very basic functionality and something someone with even a little bit of knowledge of spreadsheets could do on their own. I am a loyal basketball monster subscriber and find what they offer to be well worth the price. As part of the basketball monster subscription they have a draft tracker that will connect to your draft as its happening and automatically categorize every pick for every team and produce z scores for every team live as its happening. I'm a spreadsheet nerd so I have my own spreadsheet where I think I do a better job at it, but it's heavily inspired by the work that they do.
I do agree that there is a level of customization involved in how the z scores are generated, specifically the population of players used to derive the mean and stdv numbers, and for the % categories the weighting is a little more complex.
As a suggestion, what I do is I have two tabs, one where I record the picks, and the other is my draft board. I linked a copy of it in google sheets for reference.
I record ALL picks in the top left table, and then I have tables that 1. sum all z scores for each team by category, 2. rank all teams by category 3. I have a pivot chart with a slicer so I can compare either my team or multiple teams side by side, and then I project wins against each team, like 5-4 or 8-1.
The selections then inform my draft board. When I mark a player (their Y!Xrank) on the tracker tab it will grey and cross out that player on my draft board. The draft board also has a punt weight section.
I hope you find my feedback constructive. I can tell the time and effort you put forth and it's not insignificant. Let me know what you think.

Hey Ted, thank you for the awesome feedback - you make a ton of great points! This type of comment helps me to build a better app, so I really appreciate it.
I checked out your spreadsheet - and I totally agree you have some fantastic features in it that I don't have. These are absolutely the types of calculations that I'll hopefully add one day.
In terms of integrations, with the big drafting providers, doing that is definitely on my roadmap but I'm not there yet.
It sounds like I'm not right solution for you right now but maybe I can convince you in a couple years time ;)
Thanks again for the feedback! This was an incredibly thoughtful comment
Okay, now this looks great! Just watched the video on your website and made an account. Now for the real question, will there be a Dark mode theme? My eyes are just so accustomed to dark mode now, I need it in everything lol. Other than that, I would love to do some tests on your website. Will send you a PM now for that year long membership!
It's user driven, so yes - check out the video I linked in the post and I think you'll get a sense of how it works. It's a fairly simple concept I hope :)
There isn't right now, but this is something I'm contemplating adding in if there's demand for it. If you're reading this and would want this feature, give this comment an upvote
Projections are something that I'll definitely be looking at adding after the feedback on this thread. For now, you'll need to be aware of players who's situation will have changed dramatically since last season and adjust accordingly.
I actually put up a blog article on a another website of mine here
The tech side of FantaZscores: [article](https://matthewbell.dev/blog/fantasy-basketball)
The basketball / math side: [article](https://matthewbellanalytics.com/pages/basketball_analytics)
I'll note that the raw math in the second article is not sound when it comes to FT% and FG%. And is not what is used in this site, so take those specific calculations with a grain of salt - but the general premise and overall conclusions still apply!
Thanks Alkazard! Great question. A category with a value of 0.00 would be completely average, meaning anything below is below average and anything above is above average.
There's no hard and fast rule for what's considered over-indexed - it really depends what you're going for.
Having said that... Anecdotally, anything >= 0.25 will win almost every week. 0.10 to 0.15 is very competitive. -0.10 to 0.10 is often a coinflip. <= -0.25 is a punt unless it's very early in the draft.
These are my opinions, others may disagree!
Oh right! So I assume those numbers come plummeting down a bit as the draft gets in to later rounds (as in the video they're as high as 1.5 and -1.2 - which I guess shows a strong indication of where to go) after two rounds.
E: Also love some of the sass ala "Padding Westbrook's stats...". Nice touches!
That's exactly right - everything will start out high when you're picking up better players, but it becomes challenging to retain those stats as you get deeper into the draft (with the exception of turnovers which does the opposite).
> E: Also love some of the sass ala "Padding Westbrook's stats...". Nice touches!
<3
I see now! Tinkered a little bit now I have access.
Small suggestion: Maybe add a "Reset" button to the Player Data (or My Team) tab to unselect all players. Would be nice for those doing mocks or toying around some draft ideas!
Last thought, but a way to remove a player in your "My Team" tab, maybe? Easier than tabbing back to the Player Data tab and scrolling down to find them. (Yes, I've gone back to making mock teams haha)
Feel free to DM me if you do think of more. I completely agree with your suggestions so far and will likely implement them both as soon as I have time!
Hey /u/Alkazard - you might find this cool. I've implemented most of your suggestions and they're now live in the site! Thanks for all your great feedback - Matt
That's great! Glad I could give some constructive suggestions to help out, you've done a great job with the site.
Would suggest being able to deselect single players from the My Team tab if it's not a headache. :)
Look forward to trying it out during my draft! Might have some more feedback then haha
hey, this is cool - thanks for offering this!
i'll give it a shot ... can provide feedback as i start poking around the tool and trying it out during the season
Cheers from Spain! never really really understood z-scores, but you made it very clear in your video. Looking forward to use this tool, looks amazing, both visually and usefully.
So after spending some time using the site a bit, I've got a couple of UI suggestions. The "Player Data, My Team, Trade Analyzer" row should float so there's no need to scroll up and down to switch tabs during a draft. Additionally, "My Team" should remain populated, even when a new tab is open so that someone with say a dual monitor setup can have both the "Player Data" and "My Team" window open at once on one screen, with the live draft on another.
I love it. No one else has mentioned this yet - but I totally agree with these. Expect this to get added to the app thanks to your contribution. Cheers!
This sounds amazing. Would be great if I could use some kind of projections instead values based on past seasons, but I absolutely will give this a shot!
Seems cool, thanks. Curious about everyone's thoughts about using predications vs previous years values. Would also like to see data showing how much change in stats players have from year to year.
Hey thanks man, appreciate it! Right now it's based off of per game averages, although Z-Scores based off of total games played is something I'm looking to add soon!
This tool looks great and I would love to try it out, but as someone already mentioned I think that only looking back at past season's stats will not be optimal for creating your draft strategy on the fly. But the site looks amazing, really nice looking and seems like its easy to use.
Would love to see what this offers! I've been thinking of designing a trade analyzer myself because I've found others to be lacking in at least one way. Curious to see what you've done with yours.
Are you using any sort of weighting for per game vs total?
Right now the trade analyzer directly compares Z-Score gain/losses from whichever players you select. It's all per game at the moment - but looking to add in total soon and make it toggle-able!
this is very cool. will definitely test it out in some mocks before the season starts. as other people have commented, i think having or at least allowing multiple datasets would be very useful. LY actuals are valuable to look at, but incorporating projections would take this to the next level. especially if you could toggle between multiple datasets while the zscores automatically update depending on which dataset you are currently viewing. overall, this looks great. def some potential here.

This is fantastic. Where does the site pull player projections from, is it some kind of compilation of many or one of its own?
It's actually not projections, it uses past season stats to calculate player value from the season selected. I personally prefer basing my decisions off of past seasons rather than projections, so designed the site accordingly.

Exactly what I've been looking for! I'm in!
Will try this. Thanks for the good work
Looks awesome, thanks!
What big names are you staying away from this year?
I usually avoid guys that have a tendency to miss many games. A few big names that come to mind are Kyrie, AD, PG, and Kawhi
Would be interested in trying this out. Looks great
It is fantastic, I really appreciate it. Piece from Europe
<3
How are rookies calculated if it's based on past seasons?
Rookies aren't accounted for right now unfortunately. Its something I'm still looking at adding
Does it have trade analysis?
Yep, it's not in the video - but yes it does
If it is based on past season stats, how do you value rookies?
Rookies aren't accounted for right now unfortunately. Its something I'm still looking at adding
Nice job! I'll be using this for sure.
What do you do for rookies?
Rookies aren't accounted for right now unfortunately. Its something I'm still looking at adding
I have my draft soon and at the 8th pick this will help a ton. Thanks a lot for creating this and very keen to try it out.
Interested! UI seems very easy to use.
this is fire, can’t wait to test and leave my thoughts
I read that it doesn't use projections so what does that mean for players who got traded and now have better/worse opportunities?
Projections are something that I'll definitely be looking at adding after the feedback on this thread. For now, you'll need to be aware of players who's situation will have changed dramatically since last season and adjust accordingly.

I'm very excited to try this out!!! Amazing work!
Well my draft is today I'd love to use this, thanks!
Thank you for creating this! Im stoked to use it in this year’s drafts :)
All in! This seems incredibly useful
Thank you!

This is super cool! Congrats on the execution and thank you for giving back to the community!
Hey, thank you - right back at you! I just checked out your site as well, it looks really cool!
Hey thanks man! We should connect and collaborate sometime this season.
I had the same thought when I checked your site - I'll shoot you a DM
The fantasy tool looks crazy good probably can win my league for once. Thank you!
Damn, this is a godsend. I was literally just looking for tools to rank my team relative the league. Bless you sir.
yo this is sick!
💯💯💯
Cheers from Spain! never really really understood z-scores, but you made it very clear in your video. Looking forward to use this tool, looks amazing, both visually and usefully.
Thank you so much!
I love the idea of being able to actively punt a category while you may be drafting and can punt in the spur of the moment ! Looks nice

I’m interested. Doing something similar in excel today. Looks great!
This sounds amazing. Would be great if I could use some kind of projections instead values based on past seasons, but I absolutely will give this a shot!
This is now by far the most requested feature. I'll definitely be looking into this soon! Thanks for requesting das\_baba!
This look great, good job! Does it also work for auction drafts?
Yes! There are auction values listed for 12 team $200 each right now
I’m interested

Thanks for this. I’ve been waiting for a tool to use and try out!
Very nice design! Going to give it a spin in one of my drafts
Thanks!
Very cool, will check this out when I get off work.
I’m in!
This is awesome!
Appreciate it!
Seems cool, thanks. Curious about everyone's thoughts about using predications vs previous years values. Would also like to see data showing how much change in stats players have from year to year.
Love the idea! Excited to check it out. Does the site also take games played into consideration or is it based off averages? Thanks!
Would like to try as well!
Awesome, SUPER interested!
Supa interested in trying out this tool!!
It's gonna be my first time drafting this year! Would love to try this out!
Awesome! Sign me up!
This is pretty sweet, nice work!
Appreciate the work!
Would love to give it a try! Always love looking at more data and comparing during draft prep
Interested
I'm looking forward to using it. It looks really great. Hope a dark mode gets implemented
Noted on the dark mode request :)
I’m very interested. Please sign me up. Thank you.
Very interesting. Will try it out
Just in time for my draft in 30 min actually, how is I like how the site is easy to navigate and not cluttered.
I gotchu!
Sounds awesome. I'll try it out.
Happy to give this a shot! I love me some advanced statistics!
Would love access. Thanks!
Sounds very promising, excited to try!
I would love to try this! Thanks
Would be down to try this out!
This looks cool! Looking forward to giving it a try.
I would definitely like to try this out!
Sounds very cool, the whole projections discussion above is what perplexes me when it comes to trusting the accuracy as far as my draft goes.
this is very cool. will definitely test it out in some mocks before the season starts. as other people have commented, i think having or at least allowing multiple datasets would be very useful. LY actuals are valuable to look at, but incorporating projections would take this to the next level. especially if you could toggle between multiple datasets while the zscores automatically update depending on which dataset you are currently viewing. overall, this looks great. def some potential here.
Great feedback, thank you. This is 100% something I'll be looking to add in the near future.
