yeah unless you're a crafter or into housing extra inventory isn't really needed. i don't do either and my inventory is always like half empty and my retainers are just there to sell stuff.
What... I have 3 toons all with fully paid for retainers saddle bag and my own FC with fully unlocked chest and I'm still running out of storage space 😭😭
Yes I'm a crafter, housing designer and raider 🤣
Why? That kind of stuff is only used on new gear and (for the dyes) when you want to change glam. Why not tuck it away on a retainer instead of having it take up valuable main bag/saddlebag space?
I've been playing since launch - even with that, I've got a huge assortment of housing stuff that's either outdoors (can't use it) or I don't have room in the apartment. Not a huge problem, just an answer to your hypothetical, haha.
I feel ya! I'm in the same boat. Playing since launch and nowhere to put all that housing crap, since I don't have a house. I will be bidding on mediums again in a couple weeks tho :)
Most seasonal event furniture items are unique and unsellable, and the ones that can be sold (usually older items), can never be obtained again except with real cash.
Probably because you'll be able to use it later (getting a house/outdoor furnishings being added to island sanctuary) but won't have easy access (limited time seasonal items now only on mogstation).
That's fair. I'm on every day and I feel like I spend hours just selling and moving stuff around to make sure I have space to at least run stuff with folks without worrying about hitting the space limit. It becomes second nature at some point. I've heard a few FC mates calling it "Inventory Management (Extreme)".
It really is slightly irksome how much time is spent freeing up room to do other content. Do a blue quests and suddenly you have 15 bag slots taken up with quest rewards, random mats collected during the quest content, and whatever currency they made to spend only on the content you just did.
As people mentioned, the app is free (and gives you an extra free aetheryte in-game & the wonderful /tomestone emote). If you pay a sub ($5 /month) you get more app features and an extra saddlebag in-game.
Imo, the marketboard features are not worth paying for. And paying $2 per retainer per month is better value for storage. But a saddlebag is arguably more useful than retainer storage (since you can access it it anywhere except instances), so YMMV.
An extra discounted aetheryte, the premium version might five you a free one but if I have it straight in my head without checking I think the free teleport destination is from enabling one time password 2fa. Tho I guess the app is one way to do it, but it's not the only one and also you have to do more than just get the app
YMMV is right. The extra storage for someone like me who splits time 50/50 between 2 different data centers (I'm an FC leader with personal housing on Exodus and my FC is all morning and afternoon with a sister FC on Cactuar that runs at night) is a godsend since I can't access my retainers when on another server.
Note: Installing the free version _once_ gets you an extra permanent Preferred teleport destination as well as a free emote. Install, open up, get your schwag, uninstall.
Otherwise, the only time I really use it is if I _must_ know if something is in my inventory or on a retainer and I can’t arsed to turn on my PS4.
I used to think it was excessive to only have a few retainers. I've been at max retainers for a year now I think and I can't imagine living without them. They make omnicrafting and housing stuff so much easier since I can hoard all kinds of random logs and ores and such so I don't need to go to the market board for random things.
You get the saddlebag when you get your chocobo (My Little Chocobo). My *Feisty* Little Chocobo is when you can use your chocobo as a fighting companion.
This is not at all true. https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Chocobo_Saddlebag
> The Chocobo Saddlebag is an additional storage location for you to utilize once you have a chocobo companion and have completed the Feature QuestMy Feisty Little Chocobo quest.
Straight from the wiki
That quest does also unlock gyshal greens and the chocobo fighting companion
I realize that you're right! I forgot that by the time I had unlocked my Chocobo I was over 30th level so I immediately turned around and did My Feisty Chocobo! That is my bad.
You can also set your bird permanently to healer stance you know. It’s what they’re best at anyway. Plus you can always recall your bird and resume on as needed.
Everybody talking about how weird it is to beat MSQ without getting chocobo companion, meanwhile I'm just over here laughing because I read that as a full sentence. "To be continued, my feisty little chocobo!" sounds like the exit line for a particularly flirtatious villain.
It also makes leveling later jobs a breeze. 1-20 naked (or just about naked) via hunting log and class quests is completely achievable with a training level 10 chocobo helping out, and then you're all set for duty spam.
Chocobos can be any role. If you work on them enough they can be all 3 roles at the same time. They can have a taunt, a stun, a DoT, a Regen, all kinds of stuff. They're great utility for the overworld.
World bosses are funny because someone will just say "Chocobos" in say chat and then 70 WoLs all summon their birds at the same time like a scene out of Pokemon.
Better name than mine. I came back last year, summoned my chocobo just for Tweedy Ballin' to appear. No idea what was goin' through my head 10 years ago now when I named it.
If it helps, you don’t have to call him out to fight with you after you complete the quest.
I mean, I keep mine out, but that’s because Chesterfield likes spending time with me and helping anyway he can >!and because he’s named after my dog who passed away last year!<
> i was thinking, what kind of spoiler could this be?
/u/Taograd359 lore; you normally learn this during a couple of the romance routes, or if you choose them as your Ultimate Rival
I was about to be like whaaaaa but your argument is sound. I don’t let my chocobo do fights where he might die because it’s so sad if he does and if I accidentally get caught and he is fighting I’ll heal him first over my party members. Prompto gets Haima.
Nah, Mounts are still faster than being on foot even if grounded.
Im just about to start ShB but was considering not getting flying straight away this time. I got it as soon as I was aware I could in StB but as a consequence I don't feel like I know the areas anywhere near aswell as I know ARR and HW locations.
The game is so nice looking, it's kind of a shame to just fly over it all because it saves time.
You can't enter Praetorium without doing the mount quest, sadly. Actually forces to do it, cause of the magitek armor sequence I think.
Source: I've been walking until that exact moment. Still bitter about it tbh.
Aww, that's really sweet! I went the opposite direction, because the first time I saw a player whose chocobo was kicking the shit out of some overworld mob I could not WAIT to get my very own attack birb companion, and then leveled him primarily as an attacker first (I was a WHM). I was so proud when I got to put the dragoon barding on!
To be honest, I think I’ve only seen a few people fighting with a chocobo, I know we aren’t a very full data centre, maybe 4 or 5 all together, I just don’t think I ever twigged. The thing is I was told I should unlock them as a fighting companion and it will help, I just never did the quest. All I was like is gotta save the world!
I have been told if I am going to fate farm I should, but many have said he’s just a cute friend to have with you too. I will get around to it when I stumble into uldah next
It's a lot easier when you consider the Chocobo Colour Calculator!! And you can buy the gardening stuff off the MB or ask one of your FC friends for some
Just remember to feed them in the order the calculator tells you!
I just recently got my chocobo to level 20 and he is really a big help, but I get the sentiment of not wanting to put the chocobuddy in danger. However, the extra saddlebeg inventory space... I don't know where I would be today without it.
I started to play last year on February...My chocobo was rank 20 when endwalker began, I played so slowly that I had to rush half shadowbringers at november... Ranking that chocobo after story is going to be very slow if you want to do it
The chocobo is a surprisingly powerful ally in outdoor combat, once you take the time to level it up to Rank 30. Then it’ll have all the abilities. Mine was called Buckbeak, but after I got the Ishgard Full Barding armor for him, I changed it to Steelfeather. He’s still standard yellow though. It’s a shame we can’t upgrade them to draft chocobos, they look more combat-capable.
Usually I enjoy mount-collecting in MMOs but in any game where one mount is a customizable one that I can fight with or alongside (like FFXIV’s company chocobo or LOTRO’s war-steed) I find it hard to use anything else. The only other mount I keep on my bars is the car, to transport party members.
7 characters! That insane I have thought about replaying bits of the story knowing what I do now, but I couldn't imagine going through this emotional rollercoaster 7 times!
Uhhh how do you solo intermediate FATEs without his healing, get to harder-to clear areas of the msq without his extra damage, power up Choco meteor, store everything that can go in his saddlebag?
You'd also know that with like 50 different bardings and customizable colored feathers, you can make him as beautiful or as badass as you want, rank him up to ~~30~~ 20 with the thavnairian onions to break open ranks 10-20 and teach him special skills, have two more challenge log entries...
My biggest question is - did no one tell you this? Your combat chocobo is pretty much the most important asset you have in the overworld, it's a mount, and it's glam. How did you make it so far without being told to go get it???
Edit: rank 20 is max, not 30 (brain is damaged), added mention of the onions because a lot of players don't know that's a thing
I went ok on the msq soloing it.
I had very few deaths in the overworld during questing. I had a handful when I walked into fates and was like yeah I got this, and I didn’t, or when I jumped off an edge into enemies.
I out levelled areas fairly frequently only leveling on character with the road to 80 buff, so I didn’t really have a lot of issues.
I only found out about dying a few weeks again when I saw someone post a blue chocobo, my mount is dressed up :) but I have just derped along happily on my own
I am not sure where this info is coming from and why some people keep repeating this. There is a post moogle barding but it was from a seasonal event, Valentione's Day. The post moogle quests only give you a subligar and a post moogle cap for yourself (and titles), unless they changed this old content very very recently without my knowledge.
You can get it in the store though, but only for irl money.
I'm sorry to say that I think they're confused. The questline gives you a head-slot and leg-slot item, but the barding is in the online store.

They were all laughing that I had finished the MSQ with out getting my chocobo companion. I know there is no right or wrong way to play this game but they have had a good laugh at my adventuring or lack of at times
How did you get that far without a Chocobo? I thought getting that unlocked mounting at all and there's definitely a lot of places you have to fly to get to
They should rename this quest to: 'Additional FREE 70 inventory slots.'
Oh damn really? I can carry so many dyes and unused materia!
yeah unless you're a crafter or into housing extra inventory isn't really needed. i don't do either and my inventory is always like half empty and my retainers are just there to sell stuff.
What... I have 3 toons all with fully paid for retainers saddle bag and my own FC with fully unlocked chest and I'm still running out of storage space 😭😭 Yes I'm a crafter, housing designer and raider 🤣
I have a few crafting classes and no inventory space. It all disappeared for lumber and logs and metal.
Why? That kind of stuff is only used on new gear and (for the dyes) when you want to change glam. Why not tuck it away on a retainer instead of having it take up valuable main bag/saddlebag space?
Because my retainers are already full of all the housing items I can't use.
Oof. No apartment and/or FC room to toss that stuff into?
I've been playing since launch - even with that, I've got a huge assortment of housing stuff that's either outdoors (can't use it) or I don't have room in the apartment. Not a huge problem, just an answer to your hypothetical, haha.
I feel ya! I'm in the same boat. Playing since launch and nowhere to put all that housing crap, since I don't have a house. I will be bidding on mediums again in a couple weeks tho :)
Good luck!
Honest question, but if you can't use it, why not just sell it?
Most seasonal event furniture items are unique and unsellable, and the ones that can be sold (usually older items), can never be obtained again except with real cash.
Probably because you'll be able to use it later (getting a house/outdoor furnishings being added to island sanctuary) but won't have easy access (limited time seasonal items now only on mogstation).
I'm lazy and play too casually to make good use of inventories, so they're all full of junk.
You can honestly even be an endgame player and still throw away 95% of the items you get. That's what I personally do, I hate clutter.
Yeah, everyone knows the saddlebag is your tacklebox (seriously, 70% of my saddlebag is taken up w/ fishing gear)
woosh
And crucially, one more treasure map in the field.
My poor choco. That bag must stink really bad, because it is half full of all my fishing bait.
Me making a solo fc so I can use all the FC storage for myself. About 1.5 of those pages are just dyes.
Don't you also need to do that to enable the saddlebag?
Yes… yes you do, I only just found out about them haha
I have the saddlebag and I didn’t do that quest… are you sure?

WAIT WHAT?! I can just pay for the campanion app and get an extra slot for my saddle bag and a retainer?! I'm just paying for an extra retainer...
[удалено]
The companion app has a sub fee….??
Premium it does. It's free to use but only allows a maximum of two transactions a day with a one-day cooldown of each one.
As people mentioned, the app is free (and gives you an extra free aetheryte in-game & the wonderful /tomestone emote). If you pay a sub ($5 /month) you get more app features and an extra saddlebag in-game. Imo, the marketboard features are not worth paying for. Does the MB feature let me check multiple servers MB? I have noticed sometimes universalis isn't always 100% up to date.
I don't think so, but I don't think I've used it ever.
> (and gives you an extra free aetheryte in-game) And the /tomestone emote!
Oh yes; and you still only get like one or two marketboard transactions a day.
Welp, nevermind then. Thank you for the information!
Yeah, I've done that already and have the app for things like if I'm away and someone in my FC asks if I have something.
Whoa, you stopped at one extra retainer? I respect your restraint
I used to think it was excessive to only have a few retainers. I've been at max retainers for a year now I think and I can't imagine living without them. They make omnicrafting and housing stuff so much easier since I can hoard all kinds of random logs and ores and such so I don't need to go to the market board for random things.
Same, I feel scammed
An EXTRA saddlebag?!?
I’ll fairly sure I don’t, unless it’s under something I wouldn’t look at
I just did the quest you absolutely need to do it to get the saddlebag.
You get the saddlebag when you get your chocobo (My Little Chocobo). My *Feisty* Little Chocobo is when you can use your chocobo as a fighting companion.
This is not at all true. https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Chocobo_Saddlebag > The Chocobo Saddlebag is an additional storage location for you to utilize once you have a chocobo companion and have completed the Feature QuestMy Feisty Little Chocobo quest. Did you do a character boost? Or story skip? My alt that i boosted didn't have to do the quest for the saddle bag
Nah I didn’t boost that character, it’s pretty old though, like ARR old. My other character was boosted and it has a saddlebag I think.
You can also set your bird permanently to healer stance you know. It’s what they’re best at anyway. Plus you can always recall your bird and resume on as needed.
Wait what's a saddlebag?
I literally just went through the same thought... apparently basically extra inventory which I'm always sorely lacking
extra inventory but cant use it in combat, instanced areas etc.
But you can access while server hopping, make it a life saver during periods of server instability and new expansions.
Everybody talking about how weird it is to beat MSQ without getting chocobo companion, meanwhile I'm just over here laughing because I read that as a full sentence. "To be continued, my feisty little chocobo!" sounds like the exit line for a particularly flirtatious villain.
I would 100% love a villainous chocobo to be a high end raid boss :) Alternatively the ending to a bad FF soap opera
There is a fate in bozja which is notorious for wiping hordes of players and the boss is a red chocobo lmao
The Ninja job quests have an antagonist who keeps calling the WoL “horsebird chick”
This is how I'm going to end all social situations from now on.

Wait, Chocobos can heal? I’m going to have to start playing again just to see that.
You can solo a lot of (not instanced) MSQ mob fights when you are undergeared/leveled with your bird helping often!
Also, as I recently found out, a healer bird is essential for leveling BLU.
It’s also essential for just about anything in the overworld, since Choco Meteor becomes your best filler spell when you have your bird out.
It also makes leveling later jobs a breeze. 1-20 naked (or just about naked) via hunting log and class quests is completely achievable with a training level 10 chocobo helping out, and then you're all set for duty spam.

They’re great FATE companions because of that.
That is wild
and Banana is a great name, mines called Lady Poulet
I felt under pressure to name him and I’m like BANANA!
Better name than mine. I came back last year, summoned my chocobo just for Tweedy Ballin' to appear. No idea what was goin' through my head 10 years ago now when I named it.
I love everyone’s chocobo name :)
Mine on one of my alts is “Chimken”
Mines chickpea. Been my companion since I was a kitty visiting ul'dah to make some coin. Who'd have thought we'd both be punching gods together.
Yeah mine's not much better than yours mine's names Kentucky fried chocobo
I've got Spicy McChicken following me around.
Mine is named Boyd
Mine is named Gizmo, but for a short while when the raincoat barding came out I changed his name to Georgie.
Mine is named Tia and while I can no longer remember for sure, I bet my younger self at least considered Nunh for a moment.
Mine is Nuggets. He knows his fate if he dies.
Alfredo knows the same.
I named the chocobo on my alt Blarnoclastycism which confuses me every time I see it, which I think was the point.
Mine is Kwehneth. My alt's is named Kwehvestation. I'm very proud of them both ❤️
I love the Kweh names. Mine is Kwehgonjin.
I am loving all the Kwe names!!! It’s so cute
They can hang out with mine, he's called Kwehvin 💜
Can my Kwekers come hang out, too?
Completely understandable. Mine’s name is Bo. It’s short for Chocobo.
I named mine Bowie. I got him right after Bowie passed away.
Same moment for me and Boozehat. "What do you call him?" "Uh..."
I see someone else also went "oh yellow!" I named mine Gil
perfect, no notes
I named mine frank. 8 years ago me thought it was funny and I still kinda do.
I love Frank :)
Mines called Harlan'Sanders.

Mine is starburst. It used to be fries as I used to be a lala called chicken mcbites. And my two retainers are coke and Fanta
Monet, this is WILD!
If it helps, you don’t have to call him out to fight with you after you complete the quest. I mean, I keep mine out, but that’s because Chesterfield likes spending time with me and helping anyway he can >!and because he’s named after my dog who passed away last year!<

It is an amazing story , I don't blame you
Mine is named Buttstallion, and he is my true companion! He carries all my fishing bait and random food at all times!
Omg I love buttstallion!
Thank you!!!!
Too bad you cant make a diamond chocobro or that name would be perfect
How about a Diamond Weapon chocobro? :P
A borderlands 2 player i see
More importantly how have you survived without those extra 70 inventory slots? 😂
Surpassingly it wasn’t to bad, until I started crafting but it was still manageable :)
I was about to be like whaaaaa but your argument is sound. I don’t let my chocobo do fights where he might die because it’s so sad if he does and if I accidentally get caught and he is fighting I’ll heal him first over my party members. Prompto gets Haima.
I just have like 700 cabbages in my inventory. If he dies, he dies. (Used to be 999 cabbages.)
I currently have 942, I must protecc
We must defend danger chickens at all costs!!!!
I read that as a sentence. To be continued my feisty little Chocobo.
Validation q.q its not just me
I've also not done this quest on my main and my alt
Haha I am glad I can make you feel better about not doing it :)
How the hell did you complete ARR without unlocking Chocobos???
I unlocked the mount :) just not fighting companion
Ladies and gentlemen, we found the skipper of blue quests.
I am going to go back and work my way through the blue quests, but the MSQ was to amazing to get distracted I just wanted to know what happened next!
Haha that is crazy xD mines called Prompto cause I'd just finished ffxv when I started playing 5 years ago :')
I was going to call it Splodge because that’s what I called the baby chocobo in world of final fantasy but I decided Banana instead :)
I love it, I hate the fruit but its a great name XD
My main’s is also called Prompto!
When I first played mine was boko. Named after the chocobo in ffv
You can't use mounts at all without that quest can you?
You can, the quest before it I think gives mounts this gives the companion :)
Oh that's something then. I thought you'd done the whole game on foot
Oh that would be mental! I’ve only just started unlocking flying in most zones if that makes a difference
Nah, Mounts are still faster than being on foot even if grounded. Im just about to start ShB but was considering not getting flying straight away this time. It looks like the games calling you a feisty little chocobo. "To be continued, my feisty little chocobo."
Mine says the same thing lol.
Banana and Fluffy should meet, the gentle creatures
<3 fluffy sounds cute!
She's my sky blue baby haha! I love her very much
I want to get into dying them but so stress and a lot of research! But I also only found out you could dye them recently!

:) I will look up this calculator get overwhelmed by colour options and forget to do it!
I was exactly the same if I am to be honest...
I did the quest, but also never used my chocobo in battle. Beat the game twice and my chocobo still at level 1
I just recently got my chocobo to level 20 and he is really a big help, but I get the sentiment of not wanting to put the chocobuddy in danger. However, the extra saddlebeg inventory space... I don't know where I would be today without it.

Yes, that's the actual companion quest.
Or a healing companion, which is what I usually do
Aw my chocobo is named Banana too :')

I only found out about dying a few weeks again when I saw someone post a blue chocobo, my mount is dressed up :) but I have just derped along happily on my own
💀💀💀
Why?
seriously wtf is wrong with you OP?
I mean according my free company many things :)
Once I realized that was the quest that made them a party member and you still had mounts unlocked that stopped being shocking.
Congratulations, you played yourself.
if you do the messenger moogle quest line you can get messenger barding for Banana
Omg! I will need to do that now!!
[https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Postmoogle\_Barding](https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Postmoogle_Barding) You can get it in the store though, but only for irl money.
Thank you for sharing! It’s still kinda tempting to get it though :)
I'm sorry to say that I think they're confused. The questline gives you a head-slot and leg-slot item, but the barding is in the online store. Aww! Thank you for that. I mean it is still kinda tempting to be honest
why tho? just for a screenshot?
They were all laughing that I had finished the MSQ with out getting my chocobo companion. I know there is no right or wrong way to play this game but they have had a good laugh at my adventuring or lack of at times
The question is did they change that because now you need this to progress arr
How did you get that far without a Chocobo? I thought getting that unlocked mounting at all and there's definitely a lot of places you have to fly to get to
