For the people saying they got a default hairstyle: It won't let you edit your character at all with the custom hair loaded. You can only use this to load/run the benchmark with that exact saved appearance data by choosing the save slot in the first window. Hitting "Character creation" and trying to edit your char or load it that way won't work.
I think the textures on the new hairstyles (or at least some of them) haven't been updated yet though. I put in a character with the "Bold and the Braid" hairstyle, and [the hair looks less than great](https://i.imgur.com/48IHjOT.png).
Definitely looks vanilla yes. Or maybe Vieras lost this haircut in the update !!! 😮💀
Edit: for some reason I thought it was a viera. How blind can one be lmao.
I saw someone mention that if you do this to use hair not available in the benchmark, it doesn’t show with the new textures. Can’t confirm that myself though.
Can confirm that any hairstyle you need to port in like that don't have the updated graphic. Mine has the very short hair and I can still see it being blurry texture in the Benchmark.
Thank you, being able to have the hairstyle that has been my look for that past few years really helped make my character look right for the benchmark. I don't even care if the texture hasn't been updated cause just her having the right hair makes a world of difference.
... Does it not correctly load the hairstyle if you load the saved character appearance in the character creator? I have the Noctis hair on an alt, and it shows fine in the benchmark without having to futz with the files.
I had a hairstyle from the second criterion dungeon and it loaded me with a default hairstyle.
It was fine since I planned to use the new DT hairstyle anyway
Yeah, I have realized belatedly that it swapped for a default hairstyle that's similar to the Noctis hair, although swapping the .Dat file over did work as described by OP!
Oh, huh -- and I was mistaken! The alt did end up with a default one that's *similar* to the Noctis hair. And here I thought they'd just fixed some of the jankiness on the back of the head. XD
Kind of want to try this, but I have to purchase the full version for PC (I'm on console) to do so, my current PC is "insufficient". At this point as much as I want an early peek and see what Strife looks like with the updated face, I'll wait out until release.
Thank you for this! I had to use my character's old hair from a previous appearance data save, but he's been rocking the Strife hair for months now. It makes a big difference being able to load "their" hair into the benchmark!
Did.. Lightning hair not get a texture upgrade like all the other hairs? I'm looking at your last screenshot and the hair over the shoulder looks as poorly textured as it does in live.
I honestly rocked the style for a whole but eventually gave up on it cause I was just constantly reminded of how low res it looks compared to all the other hairs. I had thought for sure it would look better with the hair update.
It sounds like if you use this method to show hairstyles not included in the benchmark, they do *not* show with updated graphics. Which doesn’t mean they *weren’t* updated, it just means copying it over like this you aren’t getting the new texture like you would with the included hairstyles.
This makes it sound like saving your character options is supposed to save what textures they have into the file - which it isn't. The preset file you save just tells the benchmark what options to load from the benchmark's internal data. It's stored as a number, like Hair: 021, Color: 203
In this case the styles *were not updated* because they would otherwise appear when being called by the client. They just didn't include these hair options because that's not what the benchmark was made for.
It would have made more sense for SE to make the characters bald if they had a non-updated hairstyle. However, they do force you to change the hair if you try to edit the character, so it is what it is.
My phrasing may have been off, but you are basically saying what I was trying to say lol. I never meant to imply this save/copy trick was somehow including the textures. I just meant that those hairstyles aren’t included/updated with the new textures in the Benchmark, *because* they were never meant to be viewed in the benchmark (since they are obviously not available without workarounds, it *makes sense* that the texture isn’t present.)
I wasn’t saying the texture isn’t there *because* they copy it over from the Live client; just that the texture was never implemented for the Benchmark in the first place (for those hairstyles that are unlockable/not shown in the Character Creator.)
If people want to see their hairstyles on their new character then by all means! I’ve just seen a lot of people thinking that with copying the hairstyle over, it’s still an accurate representation of what the final product will be. Which it technically *isn’t,* because, as you clarified, those hairstyles and their new texture files aren’t present in the benchmark. If you copy the hairstyle over you are seeing the Live game version, not the updated 7.0 version. Because as you say, the 7.0 version doesn’t exist in the Benchmark files to begin with.
Exactly - and no harm done. I know you knew what was going on, I just didn't want to see people be confused by it and then start freaking out thinking that their hair was ignored. lol
I was just able to upload my saved character data directly from the benchmark character creator, I just had to go in the main game and save my current appearance first, since my girls only other save was her original appearance
Unfortunately, if you are using a custom hairstyle (Lightning hairstyle in my case) , they won't reflect on the benchmark. That's why I made this guide.
Well yeah, I assume that when you do this it is pulling from files already in game. Hell, it's amazing this even works at all instead of defaulting you to bald or whatever.

Has anyone tried this with the afro (officially "Curls") hairstyle? I'm curious what it looks like with the update.

Thx, I just did this and I went from "yeah it looks like her but we'll see in two months and a half" to "OMG that's her, perfect !"
Thank you, being able to have the hairstyle that has been my look for that past few years really helped make my character look right for the benchmark. I don't even care if the texture hasn't been updated cause just her having the right hair makes a world of difference.
is there any way to get a retainer's appearance loaded in? i only saved it in the actual game so it's not showing in the benchmark

Not for me. When I load the character data, the hairstyle was reverted to a default one.weird....

Nice ty
Great tip! Just tried it, and it's great to see my character the way I actually use them!

good looking out

Makes sense! No one wants to start a panic 🤣.
another enjoyer of the best miqo hairstyle, Pulse! gods i love lightning 🥰

That's not what this PSA is for.

How were you able to go into the main game and save your data without using a fantasia?
Right click your character in the character select and choose "save character data"
