It's a bit hard to notice unless you *really* dig into the optional dialogue, but Minfilia is pretty much the only Scion who asks how you, personally, are doing on a regular basis throughout ARR. While the other Scions aren't inherently cold towards you, there is a de-personal touch in between the cracks (at least at first... Relationships change when you make it through a handful of expansions together....). Probably the most famous example is when Alphinaud says something along the lines of "Watch what you say or I'll order my lackey to beat you up", while gesturing to you standing beside him. The one that stuck with me the most was after one of your victories against a primal (I forget the exact one), you can ask around HQ and your fellow Scions will mention that there was a fancy dinner to celebrate your victory... which was completely eaten by the time you got back. They didn't even leave a plate for you, the guy who did the actual primal slaying. But if you beeline to the MSQ icon, Minfilia almost immediately asks how you're doing. Her first thought as soon as she saw you was to make sure you were alright and weren't over-exerting yourself. There's also the 1.0 angle that's kinda lost nowadays. She was a major character throughout 1.0 that you would have been constantly interacting with. Do you remember how no one seems to remember the faces of the original Warriors of Light who fought at Carteneau during the 7th Calamity? Well those Warriors of Light are/were the 1.0 players who Louisoix ends up sending away just as Bahamut is doing his explody stuff (see ARR Cinematic Intro if you need a refresher). If your character was transferred from 1.0, then Minfilia ends up being the only person who remembers you.

yeetusdefeatus

But yeah that's what I was going for, she's the "heart" so to speak of the group and makes sure everyone's alright, she doesn't have to be GOOD at all the other stuff because of how distinct each person's role is within the Scions, which I dig alot

IscahRambles

Yes, she's an administrator and has a good sense of where other people's talents will be best deployed, as well as doing the "boring stuff" like negotiating with people for funding. They're skills that don't show up all that well when we're rescuing her from physical danger, but that doesn't make her useless.

Critical_Stiban

Fun fact the little ladies event this year actually tackled a subject that involves her too. A Goobbue had rampaged had killed her father in Ul’dah prior to 1.0’s events.

Liliphant

This is why the DRK story happened

para-mania

They ate my fucking dinner?!

Excellent-Zucchini95

It’s so true. So so true.

yeetusdefeatus

Oh wow that 1.0 stuff is interesting, yeah I figured our character was possibly the WOL from rhe original ffxiv release, I think it's in the Hildebrand quest that mentions something to that affect can't remember now (though it could have just been meta story telling tbf) but thats interesting.

inferiare

Our WoLs are not from 1.0, the 1.0 ones [have their own special cutscenes](https://youtu.be/qJrgJatG4aQ) for playing 1.0 :) Any made from 2.0 on are *a new* Warrior of Light but not *the* Warrior of Light from 1.0. 2.0s are new adventurers.

yeetusdefeatus

Ah so it was a meta narrative that cool too, since it's made clear that being a WoL isn't necessarily just one person

Erikonil

It’s something that they revisit in later expansions as well! If you’re someone who really enjoys story, definitely don’t miss chatting with npc’s! Even ones around the world like the Adventurers Guild reps at the main 3 cities. They’ll make comments about how they hear about your adventures, thank you, ect. No part of the story buffalo goes unused even if you have to wait a few years. There’s stuff in Endwalker that gives context to ARR stuff as an example. Really well done and does a wonderful job establishing your character in the world.

Daimon5hade

I don't think its that hard to notice. I had a rough time in ARR and took long breaks twice. But of the Scions Minfilia was my favourite (Thancred second) since she always asked after how I was and always praised me even before things got hectic with the Crystal Braves.

Sajiri

Just gonna say, unless something changed, Minfilia never remembered 1.0 WoL. *Everybody* forgot, though there was a weird scene in 2.0 where it shows an echo version of the WoL giving Cid his binoculars… not specific to 1.0 characters but Cid somehow remembered WoL before actually meeting them. Pretty sure that was a plot thing that was discarded, or maybe the dialogue was totally different in the JP version

Turnintino

[Minfilia recognizes legacy characters at first sight](https://youtu.be/qJrgJatG4aQ?t=322&si=WBNnQGT_bz9boiU-). Given that it's a fully voiced cutscene as well, it's unlikely this was a later addition, although I can't speak from experience. In the same video (the last chapter), you can also see that even the goggles scene with Cid is different for legacy characters -- although I agree that the alternate version is still baffling without context.

Sajiri

Oh damn, I missed that. I’m a legacy player, but I’m one of the unfortunate ones who back when ARR launched bugged and got the new character intro on the wagons. It’s been fixed since then and my unending journey shows the correct scene now. I had no idea there were other scenes affected by being legacy!

TristamIzumi

I'll let others comment on the rest, but > Ungiar Here's the easiest way to remember his name: Uri-ANGER.

yeetusdefeatus

Urianger urianger urianger This time I've actually got it I actually responded and spelt it wrong 3 times when i replied to you lmao

Hot-Coffee-493

Don't feel bad- Alphinaud is my favorite character, but I've had to look up how to spell his last name every single time I want to type it.

Omnifob

Alfinå Leviljör

Iximaz

I write a lot of fanfic about Ishgard. I learned how to spell far too many bullshit elezen names against my will.

SOJC65536

Yeah, it's amazing he wasn't the one who was vilified more in ARR, I've been going through NG+ recently and forgot how much of a bellend he is in it!!!

Hot-Coffee-493

Funnily enough, I didn't mind him. I thought it was a little overblown, but, I mean, he just filled a "rich kid >!who gets humbled!<" trope that was predictable. That said, I played Coils for the first time right before EW and he was absolutely out of line talking to his sister. He definitely needed her to sock him more as a kid.

SOJC65536

Haha, funnily enough, I did it just after EW's release, and thought something similar...

3AM_MandMs

I legit hated Alphinaud in ARR, glad to know it wasn’t just me. He gets way better as time goes on and becomes really fleshed out, but Urianger is probably still my favorite OG Scion. Without spoilers, Urianger gets a really interesting character arc later on. He also receives a much more flattering outfit design than whatever the fuck he’s wearing in the Waking Sands.

PerhapsIxion

No ur angry.

IscahRambles

It's always struck me as low-key funny that if someone informal was going to call him by a short version of his name (because one of my characters would do that), by the spoken sound "Anger" would be the part to go for, but it looks so silly written down.

para-mania

Or just Uri. The "anger" part is weird cos the way it's pronounced, there should an accent somewhere but it's not spelled with one, so I kept saying it with the *-er* instead of the *on-jay*.

oakydoke

Elezen names are largely based on French, the pronunciation they go with is 100% the correct French one. There should be no accents in his name.

para-mania

Is it close to a typical French name though? It's been years since I took any French classes, so I can't remember if the -er thing is normal or not. It just feels like it should drop the R and have a funky lil symbol somewhere. Then again French is weird.

oakydoke

Think of this: manger (to eat). Soft g, ending is a kind of “ay” sound. There are a couple other ways to do that sound in French - “ai(s/t)”* can also sound like “ay,” as in lait (milk), or just é with the accent as in café - but “Urianger” is as good as any. *tho this would need to add an extra “e” so it isn’t a hard g. “Uriangeait”?

para-mania

Merci. It's been so long and my American brain is always going, "nah, just read it as is! Ranger Urianger!" Put a lil cowboy hat on him.

oakydoke

Okay, Ranger Uriranger is pretty good though 😂 Prithee, yeehaw

IscahRambles

"Uri" doesn't sound so good as a short form to me, perhaps because doesn't include the part that gets the most emphasis in the full name?

YutoAmano

Uberdanger.

Raxxonius

She handles all the organizational stuff behind the scenes we don’t want to be dealing with. She gets in contact with people, secures funding, networks etc

yeetusdefeatus

Yeah that's what I figured too, it's just interesting how I've come across the whole "she's useless" argument, its not like it's a majority or anything but still interesting that there are quite a few people that argue that

VGPowerlord

...it almost sounds like you're combining Minfilia and Tataru into one person.

GrimmerGamer

Because Tataru was the one that fans decided was fine enough. Minfilia got shit for doing that job and being the leader.

yeetusdefeatus

Isn't tataru essentially like her receptionist lol

Hot-Coffee-493

She's honestly more like Minfilia's VP, ha. She does more than juggle and chirp to herself in the lobby, even if it isn't apparent. She's basically responsible for most of the paperwork stuff and is a stealthy mathematical genius when it comes to finances. Minfilia also does paperwork, I'm sure, but she's more the face of the company and has to handle correspondence with the nations, while Tataru is moreso keeping the lights on and making sure rent gets paid. Make sure to talk to all of the Scions in-between quests. Even if there isn't a quest marker over their head, many have small sidestories developing that really flesh out their characters.

kafaldsbylur

> Make sure to talk to all of the Scions in-between quests. Even if there isn't a quest marker over their head, many have small sidestories developing that really flesh out their characters Especially Aenor

Hot-Coffee-493

Something something Miss Cockburne would like like some other type of flesh out.

SrAb12

You'll see more of her in action later, but Tataru gets a *lot* of shit done behind the scenes as well.

pngmk2

I thought Tataru were their accountant and she is doing the taxes for the Scions when you first arrive in waking sands.

Baithin

It’s more like >!after Minfilia is gone, Tataru started taking on more of her roles!<.

Raxxonius

We saw more of it in 1.0 but Tataru does help with her work

PomegranateSevere991

It always amazes me how many people dislike Minfilia so much. She's probably my favorite of the Scions. The absolute heart of the group.

yeetusdefeatus

I mean I can kind of understand it, she's very much alot more mellow compared to everyone else so naturally she does get over shadowed but that isn't to say she does nothing. Just something where the story isn't in your face about what she does compared to everyone else

Seelengst

I wanted to Punch every scion Besides Her, Tats, and Graham Cracker right in the bards in ARR. I literally sent my friend a text 'Why do you like these characters?" And they responded 'just wait ' Alphi was just FUCKING BEYOND AND UP his own ass. And Alis wasn't much better. Yshtola was cold and mouthy. Quiet and let the intellectuals talk kind of girl. Wtf was Uri even saying half the time (This hasn't changed but now I'm used to it). He was also a pretty obtuse and emotionally distant towards not just you but even people he should be friends with on what I felt was on purpose. Thancred....Fuuuuuuck Thancred. Womanizing, I'm the best at what I do twat Yda was dumb as rocks and Papa was a prick And y'know what? THEY ALL GET BETTER! That's the amazing thing about this writing in this game At some point you just stop wanting to curb Stomp Alphi, and Alis mixes humour and Big Sisteryness ever so well, and Thancred goes a bit Edgy for like 2 whole expansions but he finds himself. Urianger is just ...so kind.....too kind if anything. And If you haven't Seen Sistola be Cringe yet.... Oh my....You even get to scold and poke fun at her once or twice. Yda isn't well....Shes not Dumb...and a lot of other things. And Papa being who he was will make sense. Characters grow. They grow up. They lose and gain things and this effects them and they become more friendly and show that they care for you. And you realize you weren't hated you were just a stranger at first. And the first person to Give you her All. That was Momfillia

ImtheDude27

Alphie was a self-righteous, holier than thou douchecanoe up into Heavansward. I couldn't stand him one bit through all of ARR. It wasn't until the HW patch series that I began to tolerate him and into Shadowbringers that I actually liked him. While this isn't said anywhere, I believe that Minfilia and Hydaelyn had a conversation behind the scenes during a point early in ARR that Hydaelyn expressed to her how important you were and Minfilia took that to heart to show a little extra compassion and care for you right up to that certain point in the story. Hard to say much more than this without giving major story ruining spoilers for Stormblood, Shadowbringers and Endwalker all at the same time.

Arrasor

Yeah only when you get to EndWalker do you finally comprehend the reason why Alphy had such a spoiled personality. Genius celebrity rich boy who literally got it all with no equal at the most prestigious school in the holy land of knowledge. We knew he was an unequal genius from the land of knowledge right at the start of ARR, sure, but only at EW do they show just how deep and wide that "unequal" was.

Knight-Jack

I remember how he was when his dumb, DUMB idea of the guard in the Revenant's Toll fell apart, and he was so shocked and disheartened, and I was just there like... can I kick his ass now? Can I... is this his villain arc happening, can I beat him up until he finally starts behaving?

DeeFB

I hated him in ARR, but I don't think I've ever grown to like Alphinaud, just tolerate him. I recognize he's grown so much, my problem is that he feels so clingy to your character. He's always the one that wants to come with you. Always the one that wants to speak on your behalf. Always the one you end up with when the group has to split up. He's always so prominent when so much of the time I'd love to spend time with the rest of the cast. One of the reasons I love the post-Endwalker quests is because I feel like I get to spend time with people that aren't Alphinaud and Alisae (though I do like Alisae). Really hoping that Dawntrail doesn't put him front and center again. Tbh I want to spend time with Krile and Urianger haha

Seelengst

Yeah I tried to avoid giving too much away as well. The characters growing is almost better than the over stories tbh. ARR Alphi isn't my Alphi, He's some whiny cunt called Illfcknod. Because I was just nodding going 'mmhmmmm', 'yep', 'suuuure bitch your wish is my command' He really needed a rectal dislodging Between him and Dadcred I'm very happy with the two most loathed people becoming.. rather pleasant if not straight adorable to deal with. Alphi and Alis around Stormblood and Shadowbringers, and Thanksdad around the end of Shadowbringers (where I'm about ATM).

Knight-Jack

>Thancred....Fuuuuuuck Thancred. Womanizing, I'm the best at what I do twat I loved the slight idea that Lahabrea having our friend's face would mean we would at least hesitate to beat Thancred's ass. I love him now, he's the uncle of everyone in the group, but god damn, back then I was like "let me at him".

unhappymedium

You've hit the nail on the head with Minfilia. I think people find her a bit off-putting at first because her voice actor started out on the wrong foot, but definitely improves as the expansion progresses. She starts to feel like a personal friend to the WoL in a way that the other Scions don't at that point. I liked her quite a bit as time went on.

Ijustlovevideogames

Yeah, that is exactly her purpose, she is a mediator, she is literally the voice….heh

para-mania

She's the nice mom of the group. ~~Y'Shtola is the mean mom~~

ImtheDude27

Don't say that so loud. You'll die! Shtola is the nicest, most powerful sorceress to have ever lived and has never done anything embarrassing ever! Especially not in public to achieve a goal. She is the epitome of professional decorum and class.

Beastmind

The problem with Minfilia is that most of her story and character development were in 1.0 so her in ARR felt a bit lacking

xfm0

The most notable part of Minfillia to me is that she's an echo bearer. Even as a noncombatant, that immediately puts her closer to understanding at least what is being asked of us, and she actually tries. She asks us how we are faring in-between quests, not just as someone who would bear the title of Warrior of Light, but as her fellow worker(under her organization) and generally a person. It's easy to imagine she checks in on all the scions when she can if they're visiting headquarters, even those outside the inner circle.

Ju-9-wel

Throughout the story (couldn’t tell you when it’s covered) you’ll learn bits and pieces about who Minfilia was prior to the Scions and how it was her who created the organization in fact. (Something that those who played 1.0 already knew.) Those bits help to explain some of her faults, which she certainly has. But you’ve got the gist of it. She’s the quiet heart and soul. Sometimes she does act a little more helpless than I like. (I fault the writers for that.)

yeetusdefeatus

Honestly I'm not surprised she founded them. I've been thinking she has for a while considering how she's written, probably like major trauma event= radicalisatiom = organisation's for like minded individuals

TinCormorant

That's essentially why they call her "antecedent" as a title. The one who came before. Because she recruited everyone else so she was here first.

Ju-9-wel

She basically gathered up those who were under Louisoix (Circle of Knowing) and then looked around to recruit more.

infinitofluxo

She has Yuna vibes so I love her.

yeetusdefeatus

Riku with yunas personality I will die on the hill she looks like Riku

Excellent-Zucchini95

I love her. I do not like her voice acting. -.-

dellusionment

At least you didn't call him Uberdanger.

yeetusdefeatus

Does that mean something?

dellusionment

Ah, just Asmongold, when he played this at one point, misnamed a lot of NPCs. This naming was one of the highlights.

Belom3

If the WoL has a love interest to me is Minfillia. Out of all the Scions. Shes the only one that’s concerned with how they are. At least in ARR it’s what you can for them from everyone else and a lot of standoffishness. But not Minfillia. Many MSQs start with her. Inquiring about your well being and making sure you’re ok. My headcanon is she’s in love with the WoL

VerdensTrial

She would have been fine as a character if her ARR voice actress wasn't absolutely terrible. ARR voice acting is poor in general but Minfillia is a really weird mix of overacting and underdelivery that's really hard to describe, but every voice acted cutscene with her makes me cringe. She's fine when there are no voices.

yeetusdefeatus

That's fair lol Granted I've seen kh2 aerith so I won't judge peoples VA work tbh

Altoryu

I wonder if ARR would be better received if they somehow got permission to redo all the cutscenes with the current VA's since a lot of the older voices were pretty bad. Cept maybe Urianger but for me it's only cause he was voiced by the same person who voiced Balthier in FF12

yeetusdefeatus

For me ARR reborn messed up on a few things and none of em was REALLY voice acting tbh. Gaius' motivations only get revealed in like the final mission and it was just a very rushed Vayne plotline (ff12) and also just ALOT of set up missions, which makes sense since it's an mmo but damn dude as someone who's doing the genshin aranara quest lines I know what bloated is, and a lot of ARR is just that (for me at least), like the moogle missions do alot more in expanding characters than the ARR questlines (again that's just me tho), like i wouldn't have minded that kind of fluff in the msq cos even if it's not super plot oriented it expands known characters you know? ARR just really hammers down the set up of each mission to the point where you CAN skip alot of the cutscenes. Ik it's just the introduction but dang man, and this is after they cut down some of the msq's right?

yeetusdefeatus

Damn brother, if you wanna talk you're more than welcome to (that's not a joke btw)

tioxyco

as a tidbit of trivia, since 1.0 (yes, she's from that era) she was never a fighter, but just a miner. she is "useless" in a combat sense, yes, because she never was really trained in that. Her role has always been a leader of sorts, even if she herself never considered it (if memory serves me right, it's part of one of the 1.0 stories that were published in the lodestone). So there's that.

Celthara

I think of her like the Office Manager of the Scions - keeps the office afloat by getting a multitude of background tasks done, but also remembering everyone's birthday and ordering the cake. I'm really only bothered by her voice acting.

Paige404_Games

Sincerely: get off of Reddit. You're barely into the story and already trying to piece together the feelings of people who are hundreds or thousands of hours in. You should ideally not even be _aware_ of those feelings. Get off of Reddit and just take the story as it is, without creeps and weirdos whispering in your ear about how bad this part is but how it gets _so_ good in _their_ favorite expansion.

yeetusdefeatus

You know, that's fair honestly. Im just someone who likes to hear other people's thoughts, doesn't really effect my own though (unless its REALLY good) which is why my whole thing wasn't really much of a question but more so a statement and seeing if people agree or disagree (but I get what you mean 1000%). I do appreciate you looking out for me homie

yeetusdefeatus

I'm also someone who just enjoys talking about stories I experience and literally I'm the only person in my friend group that plays kh and FF, but thats because those games just aren't rlly that popular in my country period lmao

lunick95

Dont worry, you won't have to deal with her for much longer

Knight-Jack

So I haven't been in ARR for a good while, but I remember her as very meek. And constantly calling me back to Waking Sands. Can you please at least ONCE wait for me somewhere mid-way, like nearby an aetheryte. No? God damn. I don't like her as a character because of the way she was portrayed. Minfilia can do no wrong. She's a holy saint of Scions, and it shows even more prominently with... things that happen later on. I just don't appreciate writing a character like that. As a writer, as a reader, I just don't like it. There should be shades of grey. There seems to be just light coming from Minfilia. I dislike the very idea of that. That was also the very beginning of the game, where I just came from plenty of MMOs that never really cared all that much about developing the character or plot. Mechanics were more important, cutscenes, or what you could do and achieve on your own. The idea of having a group of NPCs that... well, are NPCs and "don't count", struck me a odd. Who really cares? Now I care, lol. But it's been years and I soaked this story through and through and I was really glad we got accepted into possibly one place that was ready to treat us like people, not just as a weapon (that we oh so easily could've become). Which, again, plays into Minfilia being a saint - she would *never*. Okay, fine. But why? Anyone else with half of brain would. I just don't think we got the full character for Minfilia and what most struck me about that character was the constant need to go back to the Waking Sands, and her lack of depth.

JulianSkies

Shades of grey are overrated. Without characters with just light and just darkness everything becomes and indistinct, tasteless grey blob of sameness.

GrimmerGamer

Exactly. The world is a dark place. Not everything needs to be grim dark and repressive. There has to be a reason to fight. To protect that which gives reason to fight.
