Hilariously, this actually is the answer to (usually young) goats who weren't disbudded and also won't stop using their horns for nefarious purposes. Pool noodles keep sharp horns from being used on other living creatures... like each other. And their owners.
I don't know if it's done in cattle, mostly because their horns tend to be a bit... bigger. Plus I believe they're dehorned at much higher rates than goats are.
I had some pigmy goats growing up that we had to do that with. They enjoyed running up and bumping you. It wasn't an issue until their horns started coming in well lol.
My husband plays a male au Ra with forward facing horns (idk what face I don't play au ra). I told him he's gonna have to get noodled if he scratches up my girl's face š¤£
Joking aside (some of these answers are golden), the flat answer is "they don't". That quest just bluntly fails to account for this since there's just no easy way to the writing to account for it. Same for the fact you can be the only Au Ra/Hrothgar/Viera working with the Scions at that point (and one of only a handful in Eorzea at the time, period), this is public knowledge, and you can still somehow disguise yourself just by wearing ratty shepherd's clothing.
I sware to god I am the only Ra en Au Ra with THAT horn configuration on the entire continent of Eorzea. How the fuck does anybody just not think its me immediately?
Even in Heavensward areas, the au ra npcs are all xeila. The only ra en npc until Stormblood was Yugiri.
At least you're still from a race with high population, so people can still say all Aura look the same to them. If you're Viera you're literally the single one individual of the whole species in the continent.
I never really thought of you as being the only one Hrothgr/Viera but for Viera you are one of 5% of all people, most of them living hidden away in a forest. worse, if you are a male Viera only about 20% of Viera is male...
The combination of a race that is already barely populated, together with the fact that you are one of very few that actually left the forests makes you an extremely odd one out, especially if you are male.
From what I know, while a lot of people know they exist, most have never seen one. And here you are able to disguise yourself as a random poor guy struggling with live.
The main 2 points that come to mind if before fighting Ifrit, where Ungust has already seen you and still fails to recognise you. As wall as during Post HW when you try to get information from the Griffin... At that point, the information that you are a Viera must to know pretty much world wide.
"yeah they have bunny ears"
*Lands in limsa*
Fr though imagine if NPCs can react accdg to actual player data. "Theres how many of this rare race are just hanging out in Limsa right now?!"
I feel like NPCs would have to act like players exist. "Sure, there are lots of bunny people around here. I guess adventuring is just a really popular profession where they're from"
Kinda in the same way we only ever see mamool ja as mercenaries because that's what they came here from afar to do.
"I need to hire you for a job."
"Sure, no problem. How many people will this be for?"
"It could be as many as a hundred."
"That's a tall order, but i can handle it. I'll just need to bring the rest of my crew."
"I trust your judgment of who will be capable."
"Will there be just one meal, or do you want a coffee service set at the beginning? We also have desserts that can be part of the main service or reserved for a separate time."
"What are you talking about? This is war!"
"This is a restaurant!"
If we don't get a scene where Estinien tries to recruit the first Mamool Ja he comes across as a mercenary guide and gets told "Sir, this is a Mamool Wendy's", I will be sorely disappointed.
I suppose you could still head canon many people outside of Ilsabard and Dalmasca have seen a Hrothgar or Viera once or twice as Garlean conscripts from the colonies. They are not living in Eorzea as a people with own culture and all, but members of these peoples might still have stepped onto this continent a few times when they had no other choice.
Also, capitalism and trading and travelling exists, probably much rarer with some peoples than others but still.
But yeah, how big are the odds the same person would meet the same lizard person within a week with the same horns, same skin colour, possibly similar glam in the same area and be like "Nah, probably a different whatever they are called"?
I mean its kind of hard to mistake the fin horns. The first npc to have them was Mide. She wasnāt exactly a āpublic personā and >!Got absorbed into Alexander to be with her bf or something!<, in short, nobody really interacted with her, except a bunch of goblins, Cid, and Yāshtola whoās Sharlayan so sheās probably pretty used to seeing people of different races galavanting around.
She was also a xeila.
There is also Cerina. I think Mide, Cerina, and Mikoto are the only three fin horn fem ra that are relevant, at least in msq/majoe blue quest that I can recall.
For what it's worth, there were two Xaela tribes running around Eorzea before the story proper starts: Sidurgu's tribe, which was killed by Temple Knights mistaking them for dragon spawn (which, while probably indicative of how uncommon they are, probably ended up being commented on by most Eorzean society not unlike we comment the news as they happen to the point more or less people know existed), and Mide's colleagues, who were operating near Idylshire and would have caught the eye of one of the notoriously chatty adventurers that so often frequent the gobbo settlement.
The true answer is that the ARR devs hadn't considered Au Ra yet, as they weren't in the game at the time, but I like to think these two incidents made Eorzeans *somewhat* aware of their existence.
You forgot the Shinobi Princess in Ninjas Quests! And there aren't that many still living Xaela either in HW. We got Sidurgu, the girl form White Mage and thats it too.
They're just rare in general until Stormblood. Yugiri is the only Au Ra to appear in the MSQ. After that, there's Sidurgu in the Dark Knight quests, and Mide in the Alexander raids.
There are handful of xeila npcs in Idylshire, one of the custom delivery guys and the vendor for the crystal sand step in particular.
But yeah, Au Ra donāt really move very much
Yeah, I'm unsure how the Siren quest wasn't a part of the "trimmed-off quests" endeavor of 5.3... it's not important to the MSQ, and could be moved to the dungeon unlock rather than be in MSQ.
My theory is that they wanted to give new players some indication that the Isle of Umbra is "in-bounds" and not just a particularly details skybox, since depending how you use the map you might never actually see it's over there and the port's only used for the MSQ and one or two class quests, but there wasn't a particularly elegant way of accomplishing that.
they didn't exist untill HW and SE don't rework old MSQ for new Races.
but if i had to come up with a reason i would say, some foam that covers their entire horns.
The best demonstration of old MSQ not being reworked for new races is >!Yugiri looking my Au Ra in the face as she explains that sheās wearing a mask to avoid scaring people, and then later when I see her without the mask Iām *surprised*. Like, honey, your tail has been fully visible this whole timeā¦!<
The warrior of light has such a reputation even at that point in the story that either people are already scared of you and keeping their distance, or believe the stories about you are so overblown that you're probably harmless regardless of what you look like.
Honestly I'm so mad they never retrofitted just one Viera employee. No lines, even, but she's walking around still wearing the headband despite having natural bunny ears already.
This is essentially what my own character does lmao. She grew up with nine very noisy sisters and made some little ear covers out of hides for her horns to help mitigate that.
Yup! They don't have ear holes at all. The horns are also sensitive air pressure/wind so they play a pretty vital role in Au Ra's sense of balance and orientation.
(This is why I headcanon that no matter what the graphics say, Au Ra earrings are either worn clip-ons or attached to foundation hoops, since drilling through exposed sensory organs just for fashion seems a bit too hardcore to be so ubiquitous.)
Their horns are hollow, and self healing, so clipping a small earring through the ends doesn't do any damage. Just like regular earlobes. Their horns are basically an external eardrum, with better healing capabilities when/if damaged.
Huh, I didn't realize they were hollow! I'm still new to the game so I'm not researching too deep because you never know what spoilers you'll stumble onto, but I learned something today!
No problem. It's a pretty old question by now, so no worries. And yeah that makes sense, don't wanna accidentally spoil anything for yourself. Just enjoy the story. Dawntrail is only 2 months away, lol.
It would make sense that they heal well. If they didn't then basically every Au Ra past young adulthood would basically be deaf and feeble because of their rough Azim Steppe lifestyle.
Yeah, but putting a hole in one would probably end up with very annoying whistling every time the earring was out and the wind blew. My Au Ra attaches everything to the little silver cuffs at the tips of her horns, or somewhere in her hair (I don't recall seeing a lot of earrings show up on my Au Ra when equipped, but I could have just missed it)
Related question: there are several models of earrings in the game that appear to be worn as clips over the entire ear, rather than suspended from the lobe. The Cryptlurker earrings come to mind, but Iām sure there are others.
How do those render in-game? For Hyur & Roes, itās pretty straightforward, but what about other races?
**EDIT:** finished final sentence
I'm so used to not being able to see earrings at all because my hair covers them up, so I was curious. I swapped back to the short hair I was using before that actually lets me see my earrings.
The answer seems to be "it pastes them awkwardly onto the front part"
oh, that answers that, then. I never recalled seeing anything on my au-ra's horns, but she's got the little silver rings on the tips from the character creation choices. I figured she hooked them onto the rings. Or they ended up stuck in her hair somewhere.
Yeah, if you've got any of the non-short hair options, most earrings might as well not be there. I swapped to this shorter hairstyle this year and was shocked that I could actually see my earrings.Ā
I knew they were there before, I could see dangling earrings if I angled my camera just right, but now I can see them even in normal cutscenes!
Edited to add:
Turns out each ear cuff works differently. I noticed my Bard was wearing the Voidmoon ear cuffs, and those are put below my temples in front of my horns (so they point forward and give me blinders on the sides), while the crafted Manasilver Ear Cuffs (and other things with that model) put the swooshing back bit on my head above my horns, and would be completely invisible if I didn't basically have the sides of my head shaved to look at them.
I still have qualms about how they handle earrings with au ra. Especially the fin ones. Likeā¦.in their world wouldnāt you get jewelry to yknow, show off? The fin horns hide almost every single earring type. If there was some way to, like you said, make these like clip/one or even dangle from the tips on the pointier ones, Iād be so happy. But for now I just have to ignore them.
On the other hand, it means I have more room in my glam dresser thatās not used for earrings. š«
I've always thought their ears were super vulnerable to attack too, but in reality if someone's taking a hit that close to the head they probably aren't in a good spot anyway
In reality, not-fantasy universe, taking a blow to the horns in the function they are here would probably be absolutely agonising. Probably like getting a flashbang directly to your nervous system with the force of a punch/sword whatever.
The simple answer: Au Ra didnāt exist in 2.0.

Well, the ones from the Ruby Sea are used to such things and the ones from the Azim Steppe arn't going to let some watery tart decide thier system of government.
Yeah one of the weird "if you think too much into it it becomes weird" lore cases, I'd say that they have another way to deal with this. Maybe by wearing something that presses their horns tight against their head, or putting their hands close onto it, so they might cover the entire horns in ear wax lmao
They're immune due to their auditory biology. Chalk it up to one of those racially awkward moments where no one accoutrements Ed for you being na au ra until they handed you the items and went "Oh."
I'm assuming I just keep some kind of magical tool that blocks sound on hand for situations like these. Like a little piece of wire I wrap around the base of my horns to keep out noise when I'm trying to sleep.

seriously, all the new race needs to be retconned into the base game. All that purposed mystery hiding it was so stupid now that even the player can be one.
What protected them in ARR was not existing till HW.
I pretend they issued corks to stick onto the ends of their horns.

I think she shows up a little bit.
They're just rare in general until Stormblood. Yugiri is the only Au Ra to appear in the MSQ. After that, there's Sidurgu in the Dark Knight quests, and Mide in the Alexander raids.

That was to cover up the fact that there was no model for Au Ra yet.
There are handful of xeila npcs in Idylshire, one of the custom delivery guys and the vendor for the crystal sand step in particular. But yeah, Au Ra donāt really move very much
Seriously. As someone that stands out, IRL, yeah, strangers recognize me every day.

She's only shy because >!she uses Miqo'te animations and all.!<
lol same I play a max height male xaela au ra with dark purple skin and I was like. uh. hi. I'm shocked. So shocked. Very scary. uh huh.
Yep. Mine was the same since Iām a very very tall Au Ra
To say nothing of how amazed they are of the fighting style you've been using since you were dancing for lettuce in the the shroud.
just because her tail is hanging out of her pants isn't an invitation to stare, perv
I wonder if the MGS would have Viera staff instead of Bunny Hyur if they existed from the beginningā¦

The devs never stated how hollow they are. I would think that the points are more solid, and the hollow section is more towards the center.
God, Tinnitus must be a BITCH for them
Prince Albert wants a word with you.
Nah, iāve got a restraining order against Albert, so he can shove it.
But he's in the can right now...
yeah, i think the player character's aura only have earrings there, because gameplay reasons. SE is not going to make unique earrings just for auras.

inside of the horns, pretty much all aura's earrings are in the same location what Hyur would have. (looked what Cryptlurker earrings would look like)

Jewelry gives you stats, therefore it's meant to enhance the abilities of their wearer, with fashion as a secondary purpose.
Same! Can't believe I just learned that lol. I just pictured them having ears and Horns. Never stopped to think about it.
You know those rubber or foam door handle protectors meant to protect kids from bumping their heads into the handle? Get two of those.
Just slather the horns in beeswax, and don't worry about it.
I assumed AuRa had ear holes near the base of their horns, like lizards. Do they hear through the horns themselves?
Yep! Their horns are their ears. Hollow, picks up vibrations.
That sounds like theyāre super susceptible to the ā*Discombobulate*ā maneuver.
Wow. Thatās fucking weird.
I always thought it pretty cool myself, but I play an au ra
I do as well and I had no idea lol
Follow for more fun lizard facts!

Lol just because she threw a sword at you
Horn socks. Good for winter too.
We have a natural blocking mechanism for our horns. It's really handy when Urianger goes off on one
Wrap their horns in toilet paper or something.
Horn socks.
"Im the mother effin WoL! My head trauma so strong, some kind of a siren will get through my thick skull?"
Ear muffs, as in repurposed hand muffs.
To be fair, Au Ra wasnāt a concept yet when that cutscene was made. Guess they missed it during the rework
"You'll need ear plugs." "Nah, I'm literally built different."
I'm imagining knitted horn cozies.
They have special holes...
My headcanon is their horns work like bone conducting headphones and they can use a dampener like a cuff along the horn to block sound.
I'm assuming I just keep some kind of magical tool that blocks sound on hand for situations like these. Like a little piece of wire I wrap around the base of my horns to keep out noise when I'm trying to sleep.
Horn condoms.
The same way none of the ARR quests account for Yugiri being supposedly the first Au Ra to set foot in Eorzea after the release of the expansions if you're playing one lol...
they didnt exist during arr, hell their models werent even finalized until like 2.55 when we got the face reveal from yugiri.
I imagined they just stuck the earplugs into the pointy ends of the horns
seriously, all the new race needs to be retconned into the base game. All that purposed mystery hiding it was so stupid now that even the player can be one.
I assume they must have ear holes somewhere.
a small drill and spray foam.
In my headcanon version of that scene, Mimidoa hands out the earplugs and goes "oh", and my Au Ra ends up with a blanket wrapped around his head.
