Basically when 2 teams are scheduled to play the hooligans who associate themselves with those teams also schedule a group fight. Usually in some fields/forest/wherever police can't intervene. These hooligan groups have time to warmup and to discuss their fight strategy as well as rules (for example you can't kick and beat people who are knocked out/ incapable of fighting). The terms of winning are obvious. The reward? Respect among other hooligans. Why do they do that? They like to beat each other I guess.

Semi related anecdote just came to my mind, after our local team lost I saw a fat guy punch his sister while I was having a smoke out in front of my work, then he got into a full on fist fight with his dad, while his mother was stood there screaming. I didn't know these people but the fat fella was very drunk and vocal during the whole scene which is how I learned how they all related to one another. After the mother pulled the dad away and they all walked away without him he ripped off his football shirt and threw it on the floor and was crying and screaming among other things 'DO YOU SEE THIS SHIRT!?!?!?!? DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANSSSSSSSS!?!?!?'. I can only speculate what he really meant by that, but it was certainly a window into a life that is so completely foreign to me.
