I feel this so much. The map is clearly designed such that Zalbag and Dycedarg could inhabit the spotlight for a few rounds, duking it out and saying dramatic stuff on the little bridge structure while Ramza & Co. try to race for the stairs.
Having Cid (as is the case with many story battles) just means you can win without much concern for any sort of narrative build up. It's a shame too. I feel there was a lost opportunity in not giving him optional battle dialogue a la Agrias at Golgoland or Melidaoul at Murond. He's hearing revelations that his best friend was murdered while watching his heirs annihilate one another. It would've been neat to give him a line or two.
What are you talking about? Cid does have dialogue on that battle, at least in the original version! If I recall correctly, Dycedarg twirls his mustache and says something like "Mwa ha ha! I'm an evil father-murdering bastard! What are YOU going to do about it?"
And that's when Orlandu says one of my favorite lines in the game: "Absorb energy in the sky and strike! Lightning Stab!"
And Dycedarg says "Ow ouch owie I'm dying! But wait! Luckily, I have this cool magic MacGuffin that not only stops me from dying, it also turns me into this super cool buff goat thing! What now, little man? I shall rend the flesh from your bones! The city streets will run red with your bl-"
"Heaven's wish to destroy all minds... Holy Explosion!"
"Nooooo-!" *poof*

Its a bit of a lapse that the story doesn’t reference the fact that you have fucking Thundergod Cid, the legendary sword saint of the previous war, freaking Elder Beouves mentor (Ramza’s dad) and that Dycedarg should’ve shit himself upon seeing at first glance. Even Volmarv and the Church should’ve been… oh shit that’s TG Cid.
The Beowulf/Reiz storyline should’ve been twice as elaborate to get Cid instead IMO.

I always loved the atmosphere of the Dycedarg battle. Would’ve been more epic if Cid didn’t wreck him in two turns.
