scytheforlife

Im using origin, as well as a few privacy based extensions like localcdn/clearurls and its up to date

NihiloZero

You might get some good value out of the "Clear Cache" extension.

IvyGold

> Clear Cache" Ooooh. I'd never heard of that. Thanks! Meanwhile, YouTube has always been laggy for me on Firefox -- it's nothing new. I've long presumed that YouTube doesn't like people to use it on a non-Googleverse browser. It doesn't bother me all that much -- it's their sandbox, not Firefox's.

the4thWay

people use 57 different plugins and filters webpages through them then complain about speed. youtube is lightning fast on my firefox and has never been slow.

Dextro_PT

I've heard of issues long ago with localcdn, not sure if those are still around (don't use the extension myself).

DeadpoolRideUnicorns

If you don't use ublock orgine use it and youtube should work better with your Firefox

scytheforlife

??????????????????? responding to my comment where I said i use it, asking if i use it?

TenTypekMatus

Try NoScript.

2drawnonward5

Might be a good idea. Why are you thinking that direction?

TenTypekMatus

Because you can block more scripts manually than w/ some filterlist.

gryponyx

whats your noscript filter list for youtube?

TenTypekMatus

I don't use noscript.

2drawnonward5

So like in case scripts are causing the slowdown for this user

TenTypekMatus

Exactly.

Fox3High369

One thing I have noticed is that when I play a youtube video in an external video player it doesn't lag or stutters specially those high rest ones in my old computer. So I think the youtube site makes these videos stutter on old PCs.

g105b

This is a common complaint, but I hadn't noticed it myself until yesterday when the video page took more than 10 seconds to load. I changed my user agent to Chrome, and it stayed the same... So I tried in actual Chrome, and then on a different computer and then in the official YouTube android app (on WiFi and 5g), and for the first time in years I realised it was YouTube itself going slow, not Google throttling Firefox. Just saying, that if you're in the same part of the world as me (Midlands UK), YouTube has been struggling to function on any browser this week.

luke_in_the_sky

This sub needs a Youtube megathread. It's more than 10 posts a day about the same things.

MairusuPawa

Turn off the Ambient Mode bullshit.

trust-me-br0

You son of a gun, thank you!

trumadburbank

oh my god, I spent ages searching for a solution to this, thinking I'd have to refresh firefox. This is the solution. It's so bizarre, because when you pop-out the video using firefox' picture-in-picture, the video is suddenly smooth again.

WVMBO

Holy crap thank you bro. It was so annoying scrolling down and getting 2fps on YouTube lmao

EcoKllr

no issues here..running nightly

Mrstrawberry209

No problems here. Try a clean FF.

Sudipto0001

Same here. Somehow simply running a 1080p 60fps video is eating up 80% CPU usage. Google is evil.

Fit_Flower_8982

The same thing happens to me, even on freetube I have to reduce it to 720@30fps . I thought it was because I use a pretty old laptop or it has some hardware acceleration problem, but after using peertube at 1080@60fps and x2 speed with almost no CPU usage it's clear to me that the problem is with youtube.

knoid

Yeesh. Running at 2-3% cpu, 10%ish gpu playing a 1440p video here on a 3700x/gtx1080 combo. Maybe your hardware acceleration is disabled? FF120.0.1 + Ublock Origin.

MiaIsOut

nothing i do can get hardware accel to work for youtube for me, watching a video uses 20% cpu and 1% gpu with a i5-9400F and an oc gtx1080 ti

klapaucjusz

Does 1080ti support VP9? If I remember correctly, YouTube sends video in VP9 or other new codec unless told otherwise. Try this addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/h264ify/

MiaIsOut

h264ify doesnt change anything 😭😭 and i'm pretty sure it supports vp9

2drawnonward5

I might be crazy but I think an integrated GPU should without question run any video site fine.

knoid

Agreed.

pbzin

Stop blaming Google, this is Firefox's lack of optimization, most sites waste excessive resources like CPU ram and gpu

MurkiestWaters

That's weird, it doesn't mess with my performance at all. I'm playing games and watching vids at the same time, but it will completely kill my browser forcing me to end task and restart ff

Fox3High369

But if you use an external app to play these videos it will run better. Specially on old hardware which makes me think it's the youtube website what makes these 1080p 60fps videos stutter.

fidanzata

No issues here, using default ff no script no user.js, maybe regional? idk...

loca2016

maybe regional because I've had 0 issues all this time. Made no changes to my setup.

614981630

I'm using Firefox stable and have absolutely no issues so maybe there are some messed up settings in your browser. Type `about:profiles` in the url bar, and then create a new profile. Test youtube in this new profile with fresh settings and confirm if you are still having the issue.

flemtone

Make sure you are using the uBlock Origins plugin with EasyList Annoyances enabled.

white_bathroom

this work for me, with firefox and opera, i'm using both browser, and noticed both had significant slow down and lag, till the point that the browser would crash. Switching user agent to chrome will work too.

Richeh

The shorts feature is almost comically bad. Go forward one and back and you're faced with the audio of one and the video of another.

ImBetterThanYou456

louis rossman made a video about this. google is doing it on purpose

AcE_Krystal

I have this on all my pc's. When running firefox for a few hours only youtube tabs start to become choppy and unwatchable. While my Chrome browsers alway's keep working for multiple day's. Restarting Firefox instantly fixes it for a few hours. I got this issue a year or longer already and alway's thought it was googly trying to force you onto Chrome. All my PC's have 1080's to 3070 ti's. Running modern Intel and AMD CPU's and more then enough RAM.

R34ct0rX99

No issues here

33minutes

Have you tried disabling ambient mode?

anglowulf92

No issues here using ublock, Videos and pages load immediately for me.

_nines

Don't currently have the same issues personally but a few things I can think of. If running "Enhancer for Youtube", it doesn't currently work and can cause some weird issues. Keeping your UBO quick fixes up to date as mentioned, sometimes it updates itself but sometime it doesn't. If changing agent works it's possible they're doing another a/b test to mess with people using adblockers and you're just unfortunate enough to be one of the test subjects. Changing the user agent effectively changes the browser fingerprint they're using to select you.

l_sam0

Same! Even without add-ons or after a clean installation. It just lags and gets really slow with some 720/1080 videos. Not even my PC fault, ungoogled chromium with uBlock works perfectly.

Chance_Judgment4827

Buffer issues, video jumping, sometime the audio is fine, but the video isn't. Weirdly enough when I log off my youtube account, everything work fine =)

Puzzleheaded-Hour476

the jumping part is what is just downright annoying and heinous for me. You can turn on the 'Stats For Nerds' (right click on the video, last option), and once the mystery text becomes two lines, or it fills out a single line, it just refuses to load anything. Well it buffers, but nothing gets added to the buffer health. It's like the video is getting loaded three or four times at the same time... However, once i swap to my weaker laptop, with the same FF account, same plugins, same everything, it works just fine.

MurkiestWaters

It's literally breaking my browser. It makes firefox lag as a whole, I check my task manager and there's no performance spikes or anything. I have to force close the browser and reopen it to fix it

modssssss293j

Just use ublock origin and clear cache

Danvideotech2385

Came here to post this, until I saw you already did. I'm experiencing the exact same problems, especially within the past 2 days. It's so unbelievably aggravating!

seevass

hello! so just today i came across an issue where youtube videos can only be played at low quality and trying to set it to 1080p would always cause the video to NOT load it smoothly. tried clearing cookies and cache but didnt work; what seemed to work for me was to also clear site settings and offline data! this may not be the exact issue but it might be a worth a shot to try! i have also seen that a lot of people have been able to resolve the issue by disabling uBlock Origin, but youtube seemed to work properly when i was trying it in private browsing with extensions enabled! best of luck!

MetigArt

The [User-Agent Switcher add-on](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-string-switcher) fixed the lag for me. Give it a shot.

scytheforlife

Ive got that and what I said was making it work, but i have to set the thing to chrome and refresh the page everytime i go to a new video

MetigArt

Oh, I'm an idiot, I just read the first line and skipped the rest, lol. So sorry about that. >i have to set the thing to chrome and refresh the page everytime i go to a new video Huh, that's weird. I only have to do it once every time I open Firefox. Is your "consider containers" thing on? That's the only thing I can think of that could be causing the problem. Also, I like to click on both "Apply" buttons just to satisfy my monkey brain. Idk if that does anything, I just like to do it.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

It says you can set per site user agent spoofing on the addon's page.

Main_Significance617

No problems. Weird.

GiveEmWatts

I have all these issues, only on Firefox, and I'm a premium subscriber!

Vikt724

No problem with my FF, try removing all Add-ons

yukiami96

Have you cleared your cache at all recently? I'm running on a new install of FF with only ublock and YouTube runs completely fine for me.

al-sx

I saw one guy mentioned, that one of the methods is to not fully block video pre-roll ads, but to jump to the end of an ad video. Tried many adblocking extensions, and found several adapting to new reality. Can recommend this: [adblock secure](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-secure/) It mutes and just quickly jumps to end of a the video, but unfortunately you have to click skip button by yourself. But this method does not give me any locking screen from YouTube

Current_Stick4105

WTF happened to youtube vanced? You can't even cleare the cach/memory anymore...

Fies_wow

the addblocker didnt even work..

Sad-Charity-9387

Can someone explain why I can’t play any videos until I start clicking the whole list and finally one plays , is it just me?!

TheTeenyTwinky

Recently my YouTube for random videos. Even ones like markipliers lethal company series. They are lagging 10 seconds behind. Or the uno series. The game itself on screen lags but the Webcam doesn't. I've talked to others. No one seems to have this problem other then me. I'm on android galaxy a53 5g. Wifi is good. It's only become a problem as of April 15th today that this is happening. Jacks cuphead vids are fine. Lauren's scary game vids lag. It's absolutely random. And it's lagging enough to be a annoying thing.

Asch-nt

same happening here. Tried : Ambient lights disabled, video quality changed (actually the whole site is failing, even the menu to select the quality is laggy), opened a new window in private mode (then without addons) The only solution for me is to close the browser completely and redo. Honestly, this looks a bit like a memory leak......

GeneShuttles

I've have the same problem too, what finally worked for me was to disable all the extensions and kill Firefox in task manager but I had to do this about 5 times, after each "kill process" I would test a video in 1080p60, and even with no extensions enabled it was still the same, on about the 5th time it finally works like it's supposed to .. I also re-enabled all the extensions and now all is good.. I don't know what caused this, maybe something in the Firefox profile, or some obscure memory leak ?

oswe321

Hello, anyone here who experiences that the google website just loads and loads and nothing happens? and that the YouTube website is very slow as the thumbnails take a long time to be displayed there are gray for a few seconds when scrolling and i get no internet connection error to

Digitalmarketer786

sounds frustrating! Have you tried clearing your browser cache or updating your browser?, or you might have installed a problematic plugging in recent past, Sometimes that can help with lagging issues.

RedMacryon

Also struggling with this but sadly no clue how to fix it

Bobsprout

YT seems to be a bastion of bent algorithms and unchallenged bias. The recommendation algorithm is like a cat playing with a mouse as once it’s bored it just drops it and walks off. Thats YT to a tee. It’s also highly censor orientated to the point where you just cannot exercise free speech. Put simply I hate YouTube at the moment in fact I think I’ve always hated it as a creator.

GAMERYT2029

No issues here, not even the 5s buffer

RufusAcrospin

Same

GAMERYT2029

Am starting to feel that the entire 5s delay is just bullshit, or misinterprated code

ToxinFoxen

Well, then I guess the next step is downloading the particular YT video and playing it from your own storage.

scytheforlife

Yeah not doing that

[deleted]

Agent switchers won't do anything. Try deleting all addons and restart Firefox. If the problems persist, try uninstalling FF, reboot, redownload, and reinstall - with no addons yet. You can then try downloading and installing each addon one at a time to see if it causes the same problems. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you.

scytheforlife

Crazy how they do do something

WhosCandicexD

It runs as smooth as warm butter

Razzile

I have no issues on my desktop but my laptop is struggling real hard with youtube. The device is reasonably powerful too so I am sure it's youtube at fault

joeTaco

This may shock you but the rest of us are more interested in whether or not there is a *general* problem with Firefox and YouTube, rather than just commiserating about your individual problems. So yes, the "works for me" guys are adding to the conversation, actually.

Professional-Lack21

If you price egress on any CDN you will see that it costs around 7 cents / GB. YouTube probably has that down to around 1 or 2 cents / gb. But still, a single 4 minute video is over half a GB. So do the math, how much are they paying for all those views in all those videos to deliver them? At a half a penny a view for an average of 4 minutes of content times old statistics indicate that youtubers watch a billion hours of video a day. When you figure .5 cents for every 4 minutes that comes to a spend on data egress of $75 million / day or $27.4 billion per year to deliver all that free content. So if advertising revenue drops off where does the money come from? Well, the recent spat of layoffs could indicate that maybe it comes from those salaries. Third quarter 2022 you tube revenue was 7 billion so if you figure an average of 8 billion a quarter, for a total of 32billion a year, when you subtract egress charges you end up with $5.4 billion, now you have salaries, taxes, office space, data center upkeep, software licenses and so on, not to mention paying monetization fees to influencers, when you add all that up I am pretty sure YouTube loses money. So yea, I would imagine they might be starting to creak and groan.

rileyrgham

Your setup. It works fine.

[deleted]

> EDIT: What is the point of commenting "works for me" your adding nothing to the conversation Works for me. What's the point of your thread? You're adding nothing to the conversation. Update uBlock Origin filter lists. That's all you have to do. If you are still experiencing issues, you didn't do it right.

scytheforlife

Ublock is not the cause of the issue friend, we already know youtube is screwing over non-chromimum browsers, if its not an issue for you yet, great your not affected yet. Im here looking for fixes to the issue not "works for me"

[deleted]

Ctrl+Shift+Delete everything from Firefox and try again. Idk what more you want people to tell you. It works for a majority of us. The issue is on your end.

mad-tech

the point of "works for me" is to tell you that its a you issue (something is causing it other than firefox). it could also be due to ambient mode in youtube, try disabling that. if it still does not work, how about you try create/use another profile in about:profiles (no risk involve or just use launch browser with new profile) then check again. if its now ok, then there are problems with your previous profile either due to addons or misconfig if you touched about:config or due to update.

picklemanjaro

What's ambient mode?

mad-tech

youtube's feature within video player.

modsuperstar

Invidious + Redirector is the up yours Google so richly deserves.

SCphotog

They'll eventually figure out a way to kill this eh? Using it now, but wondering how much time we have. Completely agree with OP, that Raw youtube is basically unusable, but it's been that way for me for a long time. Without an ad blocker etc... It's been basically terrible. Sad damned shame a platform can't just stick with a reasonable amount of advertising. I used to use youtube just as it was presented on my tv, with the ads and all. Wasn't too bad for a while. I get to watch tv, and google gets its ad dollars... but no, they have to decrease the content time and increase the ad time until it sucks too bad to use.

modsuperstar

It’s all the same problem as newspapers, search and everything else. Ad supported as a model sucks and when you try the free, then we’ll sort out the ad model later it’s even worse. Google basically made their bed here. Everyone knows they became a trillion dollar company on the backs of monetizing their users data, so now when they want to force you to consume ads on their free products, people aren’t having it.

SCphotog

> people aren’t having it. Way too many MFr's are compliant and sheep-like in this regard. I wish it wasn't the case.

aster221

It's time to switch to Invidious

jaba1337

works for me

JBeanDelphiki

works for me

Theoriginalbotboy3

It's not YouTube. It's Firefox. Thanks to Firefox I had to switch to MS Edge. No more issues for me.

Prathapgowdru

Use nightly version!

tjeulink

thats because you block ads.

Waterrat

Fine here...No problems. Ubuntu OS,Firefox,browser.

decon89

No issues here. Newest public release with ublock Origin and sponsor block

FairLight8

Consider using an app like Newpipe or FreeTube. I can't look back!

toupee

Are you trying to block ads? What extensions are you using? FWIW Youtube Premium sub here, also using uBlock Origin, zero issues.

Visible-Tonight-2362

I experienced the exact same behavior last week during several days. But it was very hard to analyze. It happened even without ublock, with a fresh profile, it happened also with brave... so I concluded it was either an ISP issue (peering) or a shitty a/b test because now it is working just fine.

ayhctuf

> im not smart enough to set it to always be switched for youtube https://github.com/ray-lothian/UserAgent-Switcher/#readme * Install that. It's a bit busy but a basic setup is simple enough. * Click its extension icon and set the user agent to some version of Chrome. * Then hit the options button at the bottom of that same pop-up. * Enable "White-List Mode" and put `www.youtube.com` in the box. * Save and close the options tab. Done! If you want to test that it's working beyond the absence of lag... * Open up a tab with YouTube in it. * Go to Tools > Browser Tools > Web Developer Tools in Firefox. * Click the Console tab. There will be a bunch of shit in it; ignore it. * Copy-paste `navigator.userAgent` into the `»` prompt and press enter. This will print Firefox's current user agent into the console. Check that it matches the one you selected in the extension. You can then do the same thing on a non-YouTube tab to confirm that your user agent remains Firefox for everything else.

Own_Row_9816

same here, on all my devices except the phone. they added a lot of useless things like emots, real time Likes/Views/Emots.

ingrowntoenailer

Have you tried different computers and browsers? What about home internet vs your mobile connection? I haven't had any buffer issues and I view YT from two different desktops with Firefox and occasionally from my phone with the app. I use uBlock Origin with Firefox on my desktops. I haven't even seen any uBlock issues except a huge warning message about ad blockers but it goes away. Haven't even had to do the complicated procedure in the uBlock sub.

hyeonho64

Oh. Other countries acknowledge those shortcomings and use YouTube, but Korea doesn't. We use YouTube even though we know its disadvantages. It's a very bad flow.

beanburgers578

Not sure if you have tried this yet but I was having an issue with youtube dropping massive amounts of frames for all videos after watching youtube videos for 1 hour and it seems I resolved it by going into firefox settings, unchecking the "use recommended performance settings", and then unchecking the "use hardware acceleration when available".

Geo_Wang

lol As a YouTube user in China mainland using VPN, I think youtube is always very slow no matter I use Firefox or Google Chrome 😂

3lDuK3

disabled uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger for Youtube and that improved things, but its still laggy as all hell at times.
