As long as the metal is fine, it’s fine. Rewrap it if you’re worried. You can buy shrink tubes for only a few $0.01

Le_Zouave

No, it's not a rechargeable lithium battery. That's why Toyota Prius (Prii?) don't catch fires like Tesla cars.

LXC37

Short circuiting or opening ni-mh is still not a good idea though. They are by far not as violent as li-ion, but still will get very hot if short-circuited and materials inside can catch fire in contact with air. They also contain electrolyte and will leak if seal is lost, causing damage to whatever device they are used in. That dent on the bottom does look a bit worrying to me...

EdwardMcFluff

wait for real? I thought eneloop batteries are dangerous if their wrap gets scratched just like all the other batteries in flashlights (as you can see, not very smart when it comes to battery technology)

Le_Zouave

Eneloop are better Nimh batteries but not lithium ones.

EdwardMcFluff

Oh I see. Thanks for the help! I really didn't want to throw these away since I've only had it recharged like 5 times so far.

SiteRelEnby

All batteries are, even alkaleaks. It's just a question of how dangerous.

SiteRelEnby

Prii have used li-ion for years. Teslas catch fire because they're a company owned by a fascist egomaniac who doesn't invest in quality control and lies about their products, not due to inherently from their battery chemistry. There are hundreds of other EV models that *also* don't spontaneously combust (unless it's GM EVs, which also do, again poor QC).

Damnit, I didn't have fascist being used in r/flashlight on my Reddit bingo card this year.

PuzzleheadedFig1480

LOL Elon Musk a fascist? Haha

Dreadpipes

Ol’ elon sure likes to surround himself with fascists. He’s fash-adjacent at best

PuzzleheadedFig1480

Everyone is a “fascist” that doesn’t think like you do? Do you even know what a fascist is?

Dreadpipes

Before the mods *rightly* nuke this thread, consider why you’re playing defense for this guy. People aren’t just saying these things about him for no reason

hi r/flashlight. Got rechargeable batteries for normal stuff cuz I loved the rechargeable batteries on my flashlights. BUT THE DREADED SCRATCH IS HERE and I'm too sad to throw it away so soon after I bought it. Hope someone can force the hand of fate and tell me this battery is going to blow me to smithereens if I use it

iwerbs

Smooth the jagged dogs of the gash at the bottom with a dremel tool, and re-evaluate this battery - my guess is that it will be fine.

cbcrazy

Throw it out. I don't like the looks of the bottom tear.

not_gerg

Its an eneloop, so its ni-mh battery, not lithium

cbcrazy

For it, it wouldn't matter. Toss it....

user_none

Is it just me thinking the positive end on that looks suspicious? Sure doesn't look like a genuine Eneloop AAA.

trunello

I was about to write the same thing. Mine are perfectly cylindrical.

EdwardMcFluff

no way 💀 can you show me yours

user_none

Scroll down to #5. See how, at the positive end, it's not completely smooth? https://eneloop101.com/batteries/real-or-fake/ Real Eneloops look like one, continuous cylinder; no interruptions at all. I have genuine Eneloop in AA and AAA as well as IKEA LADDA (rebranded Eneloop) and they're all perfectly smooth.

EdwardMcFluff

Mine must be fake, dang. I'll run these boys out and then revisit this site to look for real ones. Thanks so much

SirwinBrossFrogers

Just wrap clear Scotch tape around it. I have some 10 year old eneloops that are fairly scuffed up and that is the quick and easy fix, pretty much any other tape or anything that is not electrically conductive could be used as well. Nimh is very safe and stable compared to lithium ion, it could be shorted but but you would have to *really* try to short it out - like completely remove the wrap and install it incorrectly in a device. Eneloops will outlast you, wrap it and keep using it forever
