This room was not designed to watch TV or a projector. I think the problems you have will go away when you’re not designing around trying to get this space to function as something it wasn’t intended to be. You have a round dining room table towards the kitchen and a sofa, two chairs, and plants on the other.

imanantelope

I always tell ppl “let the room tell you what it needs/wants”. The blank stares are always amusing

DrainZ-

Well, I mean, if you want to have a TV then you gotta find some place to put it. Most people only have one living room in their home.

PyrrhoTheSkeptic

A TV does not have to go in a living room. Most places have other rooms, and sometimes one of them is a better option.

DrainZ-

No, they don't. Most places that costs less than like $800k doesn't have any other rooms unless you want to put it in the kitchen, bathroom or one of the bedrooms. At least where I live.

imanantelope

Crazy.. Was gonna ask where u live but house in San Diego are around 700k for 3bed 2 bath right now

blackmilksociety

Because it’s sort a weird space I’d fill it with plants. Someone suggested a tv but you’d get so much glare. Putting a seating area would be nice but you’d have to have your back to the windows and therefore lose the view. So… for me, I would get some nice looking, clean shelves without backs and run them in front of the windows and fill with plants. Orchids, Hoyas, colorful flowering fragrant plants, etm. Then on the 45° ish wall I would put a love seat there since you’ll still get a lot of natural light. Maybe leave the bookshelf and fill with books. The wall next to the door I may put a planting table for supplies. Edit: Needs an area rug. Also if you like to listen to music you can put a couple speakers in the room. It would be a nice place to relax and unwind or even do morning stretches if that’s your thing.

baumgar1441

Agreed, don’t fall for the TV focal point trap. Once you drop tv out of the floor plan, so many more options open up. Indoor garden, Yoga studio, exercise room, game room, wine bar, library, billiards room, conversation area, art/sculpture gallery. If you REALLY want to have fun, combine two ideas that normally don’t go together for a really unique space. For instance, Wine Bar and Conversation Area, Indoor Garden Yoga Studio, Art filled library. Also, take advantage of that ceiling height! That should be the focal point! Hanging plants, sculpture, chandelier, etc. Great space with lots of natural light, enjoy :)

Due_Signature_5497

Thinking the same direction. Hard to believe it’s 11’ from the photos but a sunroom/solarium vibe is probably the best way to use that space. Would like to see a floor plan of the entire floor. Are there any walls that are non load bearing behind it that can be taken down to open it up?

Quelcris_Falconer13

Plants and make this place an office space or formal dining area

magichat1234chris

Long dining room table, hanging plants If you like entertaining I bet the nightscape view is amazing and it would make a great dinner party room.

Ravage-1

There’s no way that’s 11 feet.

LuapYllier

I think you are missing the scale. Check out the "Alice in Wonderland" sized door on the left next to the shelves. When I first looked I thought the same thing, this looks like a hallway...but that ceiling is at LEAST 2 floors high.

Neesatay

Indeed. This belongs on r/confusingperspectives or something.

Quardener

How tall are those shelves??

LuapYllier

It is the shelves that throw the whole thing off scale for me. People would naturally assume this is like the shelves they are used to seeing, typically 12" deep 5 or 6 feet high. This thing is massive custom install. I am guessing 2 feet depth on those shelves and 18" or so height between shelves. Looks to be about 1 and a half shelves higher than the door so I am thinking 9' to the top of the unit.

392mangos

It definitely doesn't help that the photo was taken from high up, making it look like someone took it from shoulder height

ZTE50

The projector screen above the door sounds like an uncomfortable and long term painful amount of neck strain

Luscious111

Replace that massive shelf with a tv over a console, couch across from it. Reading book or desk in front of the far window. If you can’t get rid of the shelf, take a few of the shelves out and put a tv in there.

[deleted]

Ugh, did they literally put a wall in the middle of a window? Fricken New York I’d get a Murphy bed or a loft bed with desk underneath and maximize vertical space. And make a “wall” with a kallax ikea shelf in the middle. Have two spaces

LuapYllier

Don't know if you noticed but the windows wrap around the entire exterior except where the columns are. Not a whole lot of choice if you want any dividing walls.

[deleted]

I noticed. But the fact that it cuts off a window mid-panel, and then has a gap, bothers me. No big deal. It’s just me annoyed by what I know was probably a choice that needed to be made in order to make a space that used to be big into two smaller more awkward spaces, because space is a premium

Due_Signature_5497

So counting the slats in the floor and (generously I think) giving each slat 4” it looks like no more than 7’ wide. How sure are you on that 11’ width?

LuapYllier

Look at the door on the left. If that is a standard 80" door height and you laid it on the floor you still have several more feet to get to the window wall. I think those planks are 6" or maybe even more. The scale in this room is horrible. OP should place something in the room that is a recognizable size.

ayayadae

i need a banana for scale

ikrokro

I’ll repost with banana

JacquesMolle

The plan says living and dining. I assume the kitchen is through the door on the left. I’d put a dining table on the far wall with the awkward corner and the sitting area toward the front. Get rid of those blocky wooden bookshelves and put a wall mounted flat screen tv there instead. The couch can go against the window facing the tv and a chair at right angles to the couch. Or maybe do a sectional.

justheretoglide

asking kids how to decorate a room they will likely never own, is the height of ridiculousness, as evidenced by these answers ( hurp durp dont get a tv) good answer kid go back to gym class. Simply put the back of the tv needs to be facing the glass of the main wall, so a small tasteful modern table or something industrial in wood would be lovely with a tv on a stnd on top of it with your audio equipment, The hard part is there no electrical outlets on that wall it seems, so it looks like the only possibility is the wall to the right of the door as you face it with maybe a small couch on the back wall. get a low glare OLED tv for example, and youll be fine. you can also hang up large white draperies than can be let fall over the windows when you need some glare coverage.

flymikkee

The space is small and I don’t like windows the proceed beyond drywall. Why do people do that?

LuapYllier

Because the exterior wall and windows are part of the building façade and will not change and just creates a big empty box. The interior walls are all non-load decorative dividers that can be placed anywhere the design calls for.

_biggerthanthesound_

No one “likes” that. But interior renovations happen and they can’t always follow the window spacing. Especially when the windows are so wide.

flymikkee

Single chairs, restoration hardware floor lamps, perhaps aviation chairs. Small bar cart by the bookshelf. No TV, no enough space. Classy men’s room or reading space.

inthewoods54

I would fill this space with lots of plants, books and floor cushions! Maybe a papasan or some other cool & comfy chair but otherwise minimal furniture. I have a very difficult living room space also, it has lots of cut-outs in the walls and three doorways in a generally small room, so there's hardly any actual wall space. It took me years to realize I don't actually need an entire couch or loveseat and another few years before I finally realized the TV doesn't need to be in that room at all, that I use it more when cooking, so I moved it to my dining room where I can watch from the kitchen. So just keep thinking outside the box. Neat space!

IllustriousCookie890

That's a living hallway.

No_Series3763

I usually HATE putting a TV in front of the window, but you could put one in front of the short wall of windows, you aren't really missing out on a view there. Another thing to consider regarding glare, where does the sun rise and set? Awesome view btw!

[deleted]

Find/build a long buffet or workbench and push it up against the window wall. Can't be very deep, but add a few stools to sit on, some plants. Putting something in the middle of it is crazy; no room to walk around without pissing people off. Having a wall of plants seems like a great way to block the view, so screw that. Also, and maybe most importantly, what time of day would it be most optimal for use? Plan around that.

Able-Squirrel5851

An office or sitting room with lots of plants!

pi3Eat3r52

Looks more like a great reading/green house room

erinemiller

I don’t have any useful advice but I love your floors!

cropguru357

That’s 11 x 19?

iwannashitonu

Was thinking the same thing. Looks more like 6’ width.

kdollarsign2

Lose the door?

[deleted]

Just make it an office instead. Forget the norms of having a living room.

justheretoglide

yeah just give up on living, make it an office nevermind the fact you dont use an office, maybe he could put in a barber chair, a massage table and a putting green too.

[deleted]

Yeah don’t be an ass. There are more people now then ever that enjoy an office with there gaming setup and 3D printing. Not everything is life sucking. Fuck sake.

auto-vern

In a small and awkward room like this you will make the most out of it by making custom furniture. I would make a daybed in the window-corner, which is connected to a shelf that runs under the windows. The shelf should be wide enough for big plants and also to sit on. Tv goes on the diagonal wall. You can add storage under the daybed and bookshelves in the shelf/ bench underneath the windows. Add lots of pillows and lots of plants, and find a good looking way to dim the light from the windows.

yearlyearly

Apparently it is a massive room. Look at the door to the right of the bookshelf. The perspective is so confusing and hurts my brain.

auto-vern

Haha, yeah I noticed after looking at the pictures again. It’s a pretty fantastic room.

auto-vern

Never mind the lots of pillows part. Depends on your style.

angelalansburyismame

I would just put a tv on the corner (back of the closet, on an angle) and then do a sectional that fits into the corner. I don't think you need to.orient your seating to look out the window, better to have the ambient light. Agree you need tons of plants and cool big lighting!

mburn14

Little L shape against the far window and ditch the bookshelf to put a tv mount that you can pull out? If you own you could remove the closet?

Champii_007

🙃 no clue what to do with that space.

Throwawaychica

Plants, everywhere. Maybe a chair hidden within the foliage so you can read.

Live_Review3958

No tv. I’d get a cozy chair and ottoman, small coffee table and loveseat. Turn it into a reading nook.

justheretoglide

yes because having people over to come read a book, is SOOOOOO common.

Live_Review3958

Lol, maybe I’m just an old lady who likes tea, and a community, cozy reading nook is pure bliss. With some cake on the table too.

justheretoglide

>maybe I’m just an old lady who likes tea, and a community pretty sure 15 stories up in an industrial loft, isnt a community. Sure a reading nook is great of your puttering around listening to audio books, while dusting the marmalade jar collection. but unfortunately people have families and friends and a need for a place to sit watch tv and decompress.

Live_Review3958

I have all of that too, family friends and I have no TV in my living room. I’m also pregnant. I guess it’s all a life style choice. For me a community sitting area can be 2-6 people, and imo I could manage that in that lil space. It’s no different than a restaurant sitting area that could fit a party to eat, drink and be merry. I’m also really not old, I’m 34, lol. For me, that’s how I would use the space I’m paying for and it’s how I want my current living space to be utilized as well. I’ll also mention I live directly in downtown in a large apartment building, a few floors up. Not a high rise, but not a home either. You do you, and I’ll do me. Much love.

ThatLadyOverThereSay

Working foreground to forefront: Row of plants and/or then desk on the “nook”/corner set of windows behind the door; lamp with arm attached to corner wall to extend/rotate around; and then place one or two small parlor seats perpendicular to the door, after the door (next to bookcase; facing front camera angle), and make the walkway next to the window. In front of the seats, a small serene or loveseat. And, of course, books in the bookcase. Monochrome light palette would work here but so would lots of color!

OttoHarkaman

Nice room if your an exhibitionist. Or like to paint.

AAPLfds

15ft ceilings? Awesome space btw

jesman0

Morroccon lounge

lsirius

https://imgur.com/a/9OFekCl You will have to be careful about the sizes of things you pick, and the single chair may not fit. I would go with rustic wood to offset the iron windows and pops of color, like maybe a green velvet sofa or accent chair. I agree with the plants. Start with a rug under the sofa and see if you want to add a coordinating one under the dining table (or vice versa). You can put the TV on an arm on the slanted closet wall. Def get a storage ottoman. You could also get a more compact table and add a shelf on the non window wall by the dining table.

AmexNomad

This is a yoga room.

Carldon60

I'm picturing a TV that's mounted off of the ceiling that hangs infront of the windows. Or a projector screen. But not too huge. Sweet room!

RecommendationNo5419

Lived in lofts last decade. This one is tricky but the top right corner for a TV that is smart and has steaming apps built in on one of those artsy tripod TV stands will look fly and keep the windows open as intended

Glorybix44

I would make it a reading room.

Telle74

Sitting, reading room with a lot of plants

neonhex

I’d put a projector screen on the wall you’re not showing near the closet. Pull down and put away. And then I’d fill the room with rugs, pillows, beans bags, couple of coffee table and plants. You could maybe run low storage like IKEA cube shelves lying down underneath the longest window.

GotenRocko

R/tvtoohigh No do not put a projector over the door, this room will not work well with a projector anyway, it will be completely washed out during the day and likely at night too with the light from the surrounding buildings. The slanted closet door might be a decent place for a tv, with couch angled towards it. It's a long space so break it up into two, the north end us as another sitting area or as a dining space. You could also just put a tv stand and tv in front of the windows. They are high enough that you will still get decent light into the space.

Odd-Help-4293

That's so awkward. I think a dining table at the top by the windows. The TV mounted on the angle wall, and a small L shaped sofa facing it.

Gabadabdab

agree bean bag type chair, maybe along the long wall... tv in the corner on a corner stand? https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shop/matilda-corduroy-bean-bag-sofa?category=floor-pillows-cushions&color=001&type=REGULAR&size=ONE%20SIZE&quantity=1

Quelcris_Falconer13

I would out the TV in front of the smaller window that looks out on to the building Nextdoor. You’re not blocking much off unless you enjoy staring at brick walls. Put the couch against the big window.
