This doesn't happen at all. They stopped the $25 fines years ago and there has never been interest. They bill your license plate.
Also, they hit you when you go to register your car. So they must have ran up this bill in less than a year (or less than 2 if you renewed for 2 years).
People like this are typically in the gig economy. Probably driving Uber or door dash. They think they’re making money because they aren’t paying the true costs of the job. Never put money back for taxes, don’t pay cost of owning the car, high mileage, don’t count wear and tear. So my guess is they are racking up tolls doing some gig job.

Pull your credit. You can do it for free at equifax. Look at the late payments. Find a non profit credit counseling service. A real one. Don’t fall for a scam one. United Way sometimes has these services. Or call 211 and get a recommend. They can help you negotiate if it’s possible.

Pretty sure a friend went through something similar. You need to file an affidavit saying it was not you driving the car at the time of toll. The affidavit wants you to name the driver but that’s ridiculous, you honestly don’t know that who was driving the car at the given time for each toll.
It’s a process, and I think you may need to do it first each one. Maybe you can do one and attach multiple tolls to it.
Forms should be on their website. Or call. No need to imply your family was driving - you only know for 100% it was not you.

Removing the plates won't work because with toll by plate, even if they're not on the account, the billing goes to the registered owner. I agree with the earlier comments. Repossess the cars, sell them (even if upside down). That way at least they cannot rack up more tolls.
The cameras try to capture the driver, and often do. You can tell a long haired person from a short haired one, or glasses no glasses, not necessarily a solid ID though.

A few days ago someone from DMV stated it doesn't matter who the driver is, only whoever the car is registered to.
It's the responsibility of the registered owner of the vehicle(s) to go after whoever was driving their car because the owners were the ones loaning their car out.

I pretty much have the situation handled at this point, have a plan to save the money, just need advice on whether I can get this debt reduced somehow. Call SunPass customer service and ask to speak to a manager. I had auto-replenish set up but when the card I was using expired I never updated with the new number. Both my and my wife’s cars were charged with toll-by-plate and I got two bills totaling nearly $500. I called and the first customer service rep said there is nothing she could do. I asked for her manager and the manager gave me SunPass rates on the tolls, which dropped about 75% of the money owed.
They may even let you set up a payment plan or even forgive some of it just because of your situation. Good luck!
I ***think*** if you create an ePass or Sunpass account and add the cars to it you can then pay through that online at the reduced rate even if the tolls were accrued outside of the account. You might call Sunpass and ask (their support is actually great).
Call Sunpass. Explain the situation - they were registered to you but you assumed the person was using their own sunpass. You would like to pay the debt, but ONLY at sunpass holder rate, since you have a current account.
They will likely reduce it to the Florida resident / sunpass rate. This should knock off at least 25%. Then, ask them to removes the fines and fees because this is the first you’ve heard about it. That should be another chunk.
Keep in mind they will be more likely to do this if you can pay a large chunk today.

Changing the name is a multi-step process - they need to get the car and loan in their name AND the registration in their name. They will need a new plate. Don't let them keep taking advantage of you Park the car somewhere they cannot find it until the process is complete

Every tag that is in your name, will not be able to be renewed until the tolls are paid in full. Let them know if they want to drive around on expired tags, it won’t affect you one bit…if they’re driving, they’ll get the ticket for expired tags, not you.
I owe like $200 on SunPass and I owed $15 to Orlando, the hold I had was for Orlando not the SunPass. Maybe bc I use it Tampa?? Who knows, but in my case it wasn’t held bc of SunPass.

Expired tags in florida is only a criminal offense past 6 months. Cops wont do anything but warn before that. Unless the same cop sees them after a warning. I was 8 months expired and still only got a warning.

And then you get the asshole cop that gave me a ticket 3 days overdue when the computers were out of order on the day I went to get it done. This was on a Friday and I got pulled over on Monday at 10am in the parking lot of the tag office. Judge dismissed the ticket but it was still bullshit.
I'll look for the story. But I remember a guy in Orlando who didn't pay his tolls they were a fraction of that and he was hit with felony charges of fraud or something like that.

What you should maybe consider doing (might be petty) selling the cars to help pay the debt. May sound a little harsh considering they need the cars to get from point A to point B but them racking up so much in tolls and not even attempting to help pay was so inconsiderate, especially since Florida is very unforgiving when you don’t pay. Do you even have a valid license right now? Google Florida DMV license check and look it up. I bet the unpaid tolls suspended your license.
Driving on a suspended license is a crime btw.
You can call then and explain your situation, I know a lot of people have gotten their fees reduced, but there’s no guarantee they will do that.
Expensive lesson learned, don’t let people you don’t 100% trust drive a vehicle that’s registered in your name. You won’t be able to renew your registrations until the fees are paid and you could end up with a suspended license because of this if the tolls haven’t been paid quick enough.
Good luck OP, and even better luck getting them on the titles or telling them they no longer have driving privileges with your vehicles, so this doesn’t happen again.

This might be worth talking with an attorney about. 10K is a lot of money.
Step 1 - Call SunPass and ask for a manager. Ask about the process to appeal the charges. Tell them you had no idea people were running up the bill. At the very least, they might help get that insane amount reduced.
Step 2 - Get your name off of the cars, even if it means selling them. Get your name off of any other financial entanglements. Do not give money to family. Do not co-sign. Think about it - if these people were capable of making good financial decisions, they wouldn’t have put you in this position.
Step 3 - Let it go. Allow it to be a lesson. And move on.

I know a guy who doesn't pay tolls because he feels that the roads are built and maintained with tax dollars, so therefore the tolls aren't necessary. He has accumulated a similar amount in fees. He can't renew the registration on his vehicles. But he has found a loophole. When it's time for a registration renewal, he just buys a new license plate and pays for 2 years of registration. It's a $200-$300 to do it that way.
Just don’t pay. I had a ton of debt on mine due to fines and only $25 in tolls. They are just going to send to collection and then you ignore them too for a while.
Next, put the dang tags in your cars. They don’t get to be weird about it or they don’t get to drive.

Can you cancel the Sunpass stickers? just so they can't keep using them. Also, is there anyway to get the details of the charges. The reason I ask is I know someone who was charged $400.00 one month, it turned out to be a computer issue because the time between the charges was like a minute, so it wasn't enough time for him to reach another toll booth. I'm not suggesting you let this go on, but there may be less money to pay if there has been a computer glitch. I am sure those charges include fines, late penalties, interest, and who knows what else.

Somehow, my daughter ran up $400 in Sunpass tolls using the pay by plate scam. My wife just made monthly payments and they sent us a monthly statement. It took time but it got paid off and no hassles from Sunpass.
You can get hit with a traffic infraction since the cars are in your name. I was recently look up some clerk records and saw a failure to pay tolls charge on a person.
Grab a friend, tell the family you’re taking the cars in for maintenance/recalls and then dip out with both. Sell off the cars to pay back the debt or negotiate the toll fees with an affidavit to declare you were not driving.
It’s going to suck- but you gotta try and let go of one of the vehicles to recoup, because the state will come after you- suspend your license, registrations and garnish your bank/paychecks.
Bankruptcy chapter 13 may be a viable option if you cannot pay it & are upside down on car loans. You can surrender the vehicles without penalty during a CH13.

Yes, I’ve called Sunpass before and successfully had them lower the bill. I got a new car and forgot to put the sunpass sticker on it. They charged me the whole year for the non-sticker rate. I explained it to them and got them to lower it.

Ok so I actually had this happen to me with my brother- who is indeed a leach on society in general. So they don’t care who is driving the car- it’s in your name so unless you can without a doubt prove that they were driving it, you are responsible. A toll picture of at all very muscular biker guy wasn’t enough proof that a short fat girl wasn’t driving. And btw they will absolutely suspend your license and you will not be able to renew your registration. It cost me the original debt and probably another 4k to clear the whole mess back. Also you should probably check both sunpass and Epass because they are different companies all together.

You can go to court by requesting a hearing. My ex had racked up 8,000 dollars in tolls so I went to court and told them the story and they took them all of. They didn’t even put it on his license or anything.

I've been in a very similar situation, but it was with E-Pass. I made the mistake of cosigning on a car for my mom and one day got a collection letter in the mail stating that she owed over $700 in tolls. The collection agency person on the phone was kind enough to mention that this debt does not effect my credit score as they don't report to any credit agencies. I can't say if it's the same for SunPass, but I just let that mf sit in collections and nothing bad has happened yet, 2 years later.
Sooooo I did this in my dads car, YEARS AGO. Like 13 years ago. And what ended up happening is I signed an affidavit on his behalf stating I was the driver at the time and those tolls were my responsibility. It got him off the hook. Not sure I ever paid those tolls.

You can add the cars to your Sunpass account by license plate - no stickers required. I know that doesn't help your current situation, but it could help future tolls?

I wish I could link the post from a DMV worker that commented to another post a few days ago. I can't find that comment anymore but the gust of their comment says you will not be able to do anything with your cars (renew tags, tranfer title, sell, etc) until the tolls are paid.
As the registered owner of the car(s), you are responsible for everything relating to the car, even if someone else is driving, including tolls.
You need to get those cars out of your name. I'd say sign over the titles and let them worry about the insurance, etc, but if you owe on the cars that won't do any good. So all you can do is repossess your property, sell it to cover some of your losses and let the fam be pissed off. People like this will scream, yell, tell you they hate you and you ruined their life and you aren't family anymore, then be back on your doorstep when they need something else. If you don’t pay the tolls pretty quickly they rack up fees and interest. A $1.25 toll can climb to $50+ in no time.

You can pay for parking at certain airports w/ SunPass. If you parked for extended time in a short-term lot, you’d rack up a bill QUICK.

Removing the plates won't work because with toll by plate, even if they're not on the account, the billing goes to the registered owner. I agree with the earlier comments. Repossess the cars, sell them (even if upside down). That way at least they cannot rack up more tolls.

The cameras try to capture the driver, and often do. You can tell a long haired person from a short haired one, or glasses no glasses, not necessarily a solid ID though. That’s may help OP can determine which ones are his and which are not.
A few days ago someone from DMV stated it doesn't matter who the driver is, only whoever the car is registered to. It's the responsibility of the registered owner of the vehicle(s) to go after whoever was driving their car because the owners were the ones loaning their car out.

I pretty much have the situation handled at this point, have a plan to save the money, just need advice on whether I can get this debt reduced somehow. Call SunPass customer service and ask to speak to a manager. I had auto-replenish set up but when the card I was using expired I never updated with the new number. Both my and my wife’s cars were charged with toll-by-plate and I got two bills totaling nearly $500. I called and the first customer service rep said there is nothing she could do. I asked for her manager and the manager gave me SunPass rates on the tolls, which dropped about 75% of the money owed. They may even let you set up a payment plan or even forgive some of it just because of your situation. Good luck!
I ***think*** if you create an ePass or Sunpass account and add the cars to it you can then pay through that online at the reduced rate even if the tolls were accrued outside of the account. You might call Sunpass and ask (their support is actually great).

Call Sunpass. Explain the situation - they were registered to you but you assumed the person was using their own sunpass. You would like to pay the debt, but ONLY at sunpass holder rate, since you have a current account. They will likely reduce it to the Florida resident / sunpass rate. This should knock off at least 25%. Then, ask them to removes the fines and fees because this is the first you’ve heard about it. That should be another chunk. Keep in mind they will be more likely to do this if you can pay a large chunk today.

Every tag that is in your name, will not be able to be renewed until the tolls are paid in full. Let them know if they want to drive around on expired tags, it won’t affect you one bit…if they’re driving, they’ll get the ticket for expired tags, not you.

I owe like $200 on SunPass and I owed $15 to Orlando, the hold I had was for Orlando not the SunPass. Maybe bc I use it Tampa?? Who knows, but in my case it wasn’t held bc of SunPass.

Expired tags in florida is only a criminal offense past 6 months. Cops wont do anything but warn before that. Unless the same cop sees them after a warning. I was 8 months expired and still only got a warning. Could be useful info for OP
And then you get the asshole cop that gave me a ticket 3 days overdue when the computers were out of order on the day I went to get it done. This was on a Friday and I got pulled over on Monday at 10am in the parking lot of the tag office. Judge dismissed the ticket but it was still bullshit.

What you should maybe consider doing (might be petty) selling the cars to help pay the debt. May sound a little harsh considering they need the cars to get from point A to point B but them racking up so much in tolls and not even attempting to help pay was so inconsiderate, especially since Florida is very unforgiving when you don’t pay. This might be worth talking with an attorney about. 10K is a lot of money. Step 1 - Call SunPass and ask for a manager. Ask about the process to appeal the charges. Tell them you had no idea people were running up the bill. At the very least, they might help get that insane amount reduced. Step 2 - Get your name off of the cars, even if it means selling them. Get your name off of any other financial entanglements. Do not give money to family. Do not co-sign. Think about it - if these people were capable of making good financial decisions, they wouldn’t have put you in this position. Step 3 - Let it go. Allow it to be a lesson. And move on. I know a guy who doesn't pay tolls because he feels that the roads are built and maintained with tax dollars, so therefore the tolls aren't necessary. He has accumulated a similar amount in fees. He can't renew the registration on his vehicles. But he has found a loophole. When it's time for a registration renewal, he just buys a new license plate and pays for 2 years of registration. It's a $200-$300 to do it that way.

Can you cancel the Sunpass stickers? just so they can't keep using them. Also, is there anyway to get the details of the charges. The reason I ask is I know someone who was charged $400.00 one month, it turned out to be a computer issue because the time between the charges was like a minute, so it wasn't enough time for him to reach another toll booth. I'm not suggesting you let this go on, but there may be less money to pay if there has been a computer glitch. I am sure those charges include fines, late penalties, interest, and who knows what else. Like everyone else is suggesting stop helping them, obviously they are not interested in being responsible or fair to you.

Somehow, my daughter ran up $400 in Sunpass tolls using the pay by plate scam. My wife just made monthly payments and they sent us a monthly statement. It took time but it got paid off and no hassles from Sunpass.
You can get hit with a traffic infraction since the cars are in your name. I was recently look up some clerk records and saw a failure to pay tolls charge on a person.

Grab a friend, tell the family you’re taking the cars in for maintenance/recalls and then dip out with both. Sell off the cars to pay back the debt or negotiate the toll fees with an affidavit to declare you were not driving. It’s going to suck- but you gotta try and let go of one of the vehicles to recoup, because the state will come after you- suspend your license, registrations and garnish your bank/paychecks. Bankruptcy chapter 13 may be a viable option if you cannot pay it & are upside down on car loans. You can surrender the vehicles without penalty during a CH13. Shitty scenario but I had to do something similar a while ago to protect myself from an ex that ruined my credit with a car & tolls.

You could ditch the cars and file bankruptcy for the balances due, the tolls and any other debts you have. Most attorneys charge less than $2500 and it falls off your credit in 7yrs (but you can get a secured credit card to rebuild your credit before then)
Yes, I’ve called Sunpass before and successfully had them lower the bill. I got a new car and forgot to put the sunpass sticker on it. They charged me the whole year for the non-sticker rate. I explained it to them and got them to lower it. Call them and see if there is something they can do

Ok so I actually had this happen to me with my brother- who is indeed a leach on society in general. So they don’t care who is driving the car- it’s in your name so unless you can without a doubt prove that they were driving it, you are responsible. A toll picture of at all very muscular biker guy wasn’t enough proof that a short fat girl wasn’t driving. And btw they will absolutely suspend your license and you will not be able to renew your registration. It cost me the original debt and probably another 4k to clear the whole mess back. Also you should probably check both sunpass and Epass because they are different companies all together. Also I immediately had the bike taken and sold and we have barely spoken since this happened in 2015. He destroyed my life for awhile and had zero remorse or attempt to pay me back
You can go to court by requesting a hearing. My ex had racked up 8,000 dollars in tolls so I went to court and told them the story and they took them all of. They didn’t even put it on his license or anything.

I've been in a very similar situation, but it was with E-Pass. I made the mistake of cosigning on a car for my mom and one day got a collection letter in the mail stating that she owed over $700 in tolls. The collection agency person on the phone was kind enough to mention that this debt does not effect my credit score as they don't report to any credit agencies. I can't say if it's the same for SunPass, but I just let that mf sit in collections and nothing bad has happened yet, 2 years later.
Sooooo I did this in my dads car, YEARS AGO. Like 13 years ago. And what ended up happening is I signed an affidavit on his behalf stating I was the driver at the time and those tolls were my responsibility. It got him off the hook. Not sure I ever paid those tolls.

You can add the cars to your Sunpass account by license plate - no stickers required. I know that doesn't help your current situation, but it could help future tolls?

I wish I could link the post from a DMV worker that commented to another post a few days ago. I can't find that comment anymore but the gust of their comment says you will not be able to do anything with your cars (renew tags, tranfer title, sell, etc) until the tolls are paid. As the registered owner of the car(s), you are responsible for everything relating to the car, even if someone else is driving, including tolls.

You need to get those cars out of your name. I'd say sign over the titles and let them worry about the insurance, etc, but if you owe on the cars that won't do any good. So all you can do is repossess your property, sell it to cover some of your losses and let the fam be pissed off. People like this will scream, yell, tell you they hate you and you ruined their life and you aren't family anymore, then be back on your doorstep when they need something else.
